Book Description

The first biography of one of the brightest, most talented stars of the 90s, whose starring role in ``The English Patient'' has made him the toast of Hollywood. Ralph Fiennes' meteoric rise to fame has made him the subject of much speculation. Sought after on both sides of the Atlantic after the spectacular, Oscar-winning success of ``The English Patient,'' he has become one of the cinema's hottest properties. As desirable as Brando and as English as David Niven, he is also a brilliant stage actor, acclaimed as one of the greatest Hamlets ever. Intensely private and media-shy, however, he remains an enigma. In this new unauthorized biography, journalist York Membery delves behind the headlines to uncover the nature of this curious and exciting man--from his bohemian childhood, through the early days of his acting career and his relationships, up to the very pinnacle of his current success. York Membery is a journalist and feature writer for Britain's Guardian and The Sunday Times. 224 pp 6 x 9 16 pp b/w photos

4 out of 5 stars Accomplished actor.......2001-01-05

As a Fiennes fan I think this book offers a glimpse of life of a very private actor. Fiennes is a fine and accomplished actor regardless his moody and intense personality viewed by many. His private life may not be the ideal for everyone, but it is his personal life. York Membery's writing is just fine, but should Membery always makes deep comparison of Fiennes's widely-viewed personality with the characters in Fiennes's works such as Ivanov and Hamlet?

4 out of 5 stars Exhaustive search on the man behind the curtain.......1999-12-13

It's an excellent book, I must say, although it can be updated. The authors however is yet to prowl further into his private life... if he wants to make this a must-have for all Ralph Fiennes fans, that is. Another prob. is that it tends to lack good pictures, pictures of his childhood days and his family. But since this is the only Ralph Fiennes autobiography available, it is worth a read if you're into his works though.

2 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes ..........1999-11-02

Too many mistakes for my taste :( There were so many obvious mistakes in this book. If York's simple research on scenes from The English Patient was so inaccurate, it makes me wonder how inaccurate the rest of his research for the book was. (How difficult is it to watch a film and get the quotes/senarios right?) Does have some nice photos.

5 out of 5 stars Ralph Fiennes: The Biography is a GREAT book!.......1999-09-27

Ralph Fiennes: the biography is a great book to read. It has tons upon tons of facts about his life! Some parts are really funny to read! There is also some great pictures of him and his "significant others" but you just have to find out who I am talking about by buying the book! You will have a great time reading it. I know I did!

3 out of 5 stars As Close As Anyone Could Come To Know Ralph.......1999-01-28

York Membrey's book is a fun, insightful and joyous read to all those of us who can't get enough of this actor we adore, yet even Membrey's painstaking research into the life of the man only scratches the surface of the soul of the great actor. This is not the fault of the author. In the personal research I have done on this man, I find that Ralph Fiennes has lived his entire life almost as an enigma. Not only do we distanced fans feel detached from his life, but, as this book shows, so do his friends, acquaintances, and even his biographer. While incomplete, however, this book is still a must for any Ralph fan. It's documentation of his professional career will read as mere review, but it's insight into his childhood is truly fascinating and touching. I hope York Membrey will continue the research begun in this book, and provide us with updates as we get to further know the greatest actor of our time.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-01

This book was so great. I especially enjoyed Megan's Choice and Lisa's Broken Arrow. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical Christian romance novels.

    5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-08-13

These stories were very well done (with one exception that I'll get to later). I enjoyed all 4 stories. All were packed full of well developed characters, beautiful romances, and a touch of suspense (alright, more than a touch!).

It was nice to see one author write from so many different perspectives. While so many of these types of books include freed slaves, it was nice to have a story from their viewpoint, where they are the primary characters vs. the secondary. I also liked Banjo's New Song where the old guy gets the girl. After how wonderful he was in the other stories he was easy to cheer for.

The one annoyance I had wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't been raised in Colorado. That is, I am curious as to why somebody who lived about 40 miles north of Denver would travel south to Denver to take a stage to Laramie, a city 60 or so miles NE of Denver. It irritated me to the point where I actually pretended the book was set South of Denver, more toward Castle Rock or CO springs... it's prettier down there, anyway!!

All in all, though, this book was terrific... very worthwhile.

    4 out of 5 stars Colorado.......2007-01-12

This was just the kind of story I love to read. It was a good, clean story with no nasty lanaguage and a well written story line. I will be looking for more books like this one. I might add that I have already read Alabama which was a similar type of book. I very much enjoyed that book as well.

4 out of 5 stars simple and nice.......2005-04-07

The first book is about Megan and Steve and their marriage of convenience. Megan is drawn to Steve because he is always so nice to her, but at first she only feels protective of him when their ranch is attacked. Once she gets saved she realizes she loves him, but feels he will never return her love. The second book is about Em and Chance. This book gives wonderful examples of how God always gives us second chances. The thir is about Lisa and John. I loved this book probably the most. The reader can really see the change in Lisa throughout the book. The last book is about Banjo. This one was probably my least favorite simply because of the age difference between him and Sally. Nothing wrong with age differences it's just that it seemed to me in this book that Sally viewed him as a father more than a husband. But it was well written. Overall they were really enjoyable.

Auburn Jackson was alone, ignorant, and pregnant, but not unBibled. She had sinned and was punished with a brain-damaged child to raise in the impoverished wilds of West Virginia. But she had spunk and the guile of the street-smart, and she believed in the innate goodness in all. So armed, Auburn guts out a nursing degree while caring for her child, only to see him die like his father in a mine. Thinking to redeem herself from God's wrath, Auburn takes a nursing job for handicapped youth on Hatteras Island and finds happiness and fulfillment for a time. She revels in loving an Indian child from her own birthplace on Knapps Creek.

No good deed goes unpunished, the sage says and Auburn is not immune. Marriage, an in-wedlock child, and a happy home are not in God's plan for her redemption in this love story.

        Book Description

Broken Arrow was established in 1902 as a railroad terminal on the Missouri, Kansas, & Texas Railroad. It became a trade center for cattle, cotton and corn. In the early days, roses were planted in homes and along streets, and the use of a local spring for city water gave Broken Arrow the title of ìCity of Roses and Pure Water.î The population was stable until 1950, when the rapid growth of the city made it the fifth largest in Oklahoma. ÝÝBroken Arrow: City of Roses and Pure Water is a collection of vintage images that illustrates the development of the town from an agricultural trade center to a prosperous city of diversified, light industry and a center of education. Featured in this book are the busy streets, parades and festivals, softball tournaments, tourist attractions, and recent civic improvements that make Broken Arrow unique. Historic photographs of downtown stores and residential homes depict the earliest growth patterns of the city and show the development of Broken Arrow as a community. ÝÝ

5 out of 5 stars The book was written only two years after the accident.......2004-05-05

You know, I have found that being thrust into that world of white (hospitals, nurses, and doctors) has actually increased my quality of life. Sure, I was dealt a rather unfortunate hand, but in my opinion, only recently did I realize this, I am the way I am and I will always be the same person as before. Now, in the minds of children, a character never 'grows up'; however, I have. Now, I write as a 25-year-old associate in college. Since the publication of my book, I have endured over 40+ different surgeries in various parts of my physical body, though my love and compassion for others has not wavered. Hopefully, someday I will be able to fully document my trials and tribulations for anyone interested. For now, I am content in my wheelchair - a result of my most recent surgery - but I am working towards walking again with my cane. For those concerned, my determination shall shine forth and once again I will be the Adam Moore I once was.

        5 out of 5 stars A Treasured Friend.......2003-01-09

I bought this book more than a decade past at a convention about gifted children. I loved it then and marveled that a boy so young could write such an incredible book, and that there was a publisher so brave and generous to bring it to the public eye. Just recently, January 7, 2003, I revisted this old friend of a book and was even more inspired by its courage and vision than I was all those years ago. I am sure Adam Moore is all grown up now and I pray that he is happy and well. Thank goodness, I now discover via Amazon.com that his terrific book is still available to both kids and adults. This is a great story and one of a boy's triumph over enormous odds and terrible pain to regain his life. Broken Arrow Boy is a triumph of the will and the spirit that people will benefit from reading again and again. This is a book children and their parents should share. Broken Arrow Boy is like an old friend. It calls for many reunions.

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow Boy.......2001-08-02

This book is incredible to have been written by a young boy. Adam Moore kept a positive attitude through many complications that occured after he fell on a arrow that went into his brain through his eye. He gives details of many medical procedures in a way that is interesting to children. I have read it to second graders every year since I discovered it, and they love it. I use it to encourage them to write about things that happen to them.

4 out of 5 stars My classmate, Adam.......2000-11-03

Adam's story takes place when we were in 3rd grade in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His story touched all the students and we were very impressed with his book. Being a teacher, I like to share stories that touch me with my students. Adam's book is obviously written by a child for children. The students love the fact that they are around the same age Adam was at the time. They also like the idea that a child can actually write a book to be published. It gives them inspiration to be writers themselves.

This is the third Max Brand paperback I've read lately. If "Rescue of Broken Arrow" had been my first, it might have been my only. The storyline moved extremely slow. The author's use of flowery prose seemed a little out-of-place for a true western (i.e., "Then the green of the woods closed over them, joining above their heads in green Gothic vaults, crossed with lierne and ogive faintly open to the sprinkling of bright stars above them.") The only plus I saw regarding this particular western was that the author did an excellent job of noting the transformation of the main character, Cashel, from a young eastern renegade thief maturing into a man who finds his niche in life.

            5 out of 5 stars The beginning of a gripping saga . . ........2004-12-29

After losing wife, baby, and cattle, Stuart Brannon abandons his Arizona ranch and heads north. A blizzard strands him at Broken Arrow Crossing, a remote Colorado stage station, and one thing after another keeps him busy throughout the winter - a wounded old prospector, an abused, pregnant Indian girl, idealistic gold seekers, and a showdown with outlaws.

In the wake of his loss, Brannon grapples with questions about God's sovereignty and love. The answers are never easy or trite - sometimes they don't come at all - but even as he deals with his sorrows, Brannon never gives up on his essential faith. He steadfastly does what he believes is right, no matter how difficult or nonsensical it may seem. His reward is in knowing he hasn't walked away from a situation till he's done all he can to better others' lives.

Well-written, more somber than some of Bly's later works, but plenty of appeal for those of us who love the stories of the Old West. Stuart Brannon is almost a cross between one of the legendary Sackett brothers and a Zane Grey hero, with an unashamed faith in Christ. Bly shatters the myth that genuine commitment to Biblical truth is only for women, children, and old people.

This is the official Pentagon document describing the pre-planned procedures in the event of an accident or emergency involving a nuclear weapon or any nuclear or radiation incident involving a radiological release. The foreword states:

"This manual has been developed by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) under the authority of the Department of Defense. Its use is mandatory by all DoD components. This manual provides planners for Combatant Commanders, the Services, Response Task Force Commanders, and Initial Response Force (IRF) commanders with the information necessary to understand the overall response concept… and provides guidance in conducting site remediation activities following an accident involving a nuclear weapon in DOD custody or other types of radiological accidents or incidents. It assumes that a radiological release of some magnitude has occurred and that some remediation of the affected land is required… This manual will be widely disseminated and made available to all commanders and staff who are tasked to primarily respond to a nuclear weapon accident and, secondarily, to radiological accidents or incidents. It should serve as a guide for more detailed planning by response forces ! and will be used to improve training and exercise programs."

                5 out of 5 stars A Classroom In A Book.......2006-05-29

The way Keith Dawson handles the materials is well-written and concise. He does not waste much time going into more than just a couple real-world applications for the technologies he is explaining, but he does set your mind spinning about how they can be used to suit your needs. The information on VoIP and IP Telephony are a little dated and an updated edition would obviously expand a lot on those technologies (which were just emerging when the book was written but have become very popular in the industry now). Not only does he discuss what technologies are available (like AVR, IP-PBX, Recording, Call Queuing, etc.), he goes into a brief discription of the more traditional PBX system, if only to point out their flaws compared to today's newer technology but not failing to point out their merits as well. A good book for someone who is just beginning to integrate themselves in the field and the tech.

5 out of 5 stars THE CALL CENTER: SELF-SERVICE OR SELF DELUSION?.......2005-07-31

Chances are that you already have this book in your IT library. But, you probably don't have the 5th edition of the book. Author Keith Dawson has done an outstanding job of presenting the complete guide to starting, running and improving your call center.

Dawson begins by showing you his Six-Stage Model of Call Center Development, which is has to do with the way the call center interacts with the rest of the company. Next, the author discusses how you are going to have to find a place or location for your call center. Then, he covers some of the important factors that go into a call center successful design. Dawson next discusses how you have to be very careful in choosing the toll free and long distance services for your call center, because they will be very expensive. Next, the author also covers the automatic call distributor, which routes calls and manages information with respect to those calls. Then, he examines predictive dialing systems, which automate the entire outdialing process, with the computer choosing the person to be called and dialing the number. In addition, Dawson then examines the pros and cons of computer telephone integration. Next, the author looks at interactive voice response, which always captures information in an accurate manner. Then, he researches speech recognition system technology as an autoselector tool for the call center. Dawson continues on by exploring the Web as a tool to automate all of the call center functions without human interaction. Next, the author discusses some of the interesting new tools available, including CRM and the new theories of multichannel access for customer contact. Then, he gives some very serious thought about putting a video in your call center. Dawson then discusses that the best way to route a call to the agent most capable of handling that specific call, is routing based on an agent's skill or combination of skills, like language, training, experience, or any mix of those and other factors. Then, the author explains the importance of customer relationship management (CRM). Next, he shows you why order processing systems give you power over your inventory and pricing. Dawson next reminds you why display boards and readerboards are a stable versatile technology, and an inexpensive way to quickly improve call center performance. The author also explains why headsets are a key ingredient in every call center. Next, he discusses the on-hold messaging queue. Dawson also explains the importance of workforce management software, and how it is the art and science of having the right number of agents at the right times, in their seats, to answer an accurately forecasted volume of incoming calls at the service level you desire. Then, the author continues on by explaining why monitoring is a critical part of the process of teaching anew rep how to deal with customers, how to handle difficult situations, even simply how to follow a script and read a screen full of complex information. Finally, he goes into how to make call center careers meaningful.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of making you, the reader, understand the value of surefire ways to motivate your reps; realize the value on the front line; outsourcing; disaster and contingency planning; and, telecommuting agents. At the end of the day, you'll know whether the call center is self-service or self-delusion.

                3 out of 5 stars A good general guide.......2000-11-28

This is a good book to people who want to have an overview at a glance about call centers features and problems. But, according to new economy habits, it is not a technological issue. So, if many points are discussed, such as human resources, real estate, organisation, hardware and products, none of them is focused in a detailed way. It is surely a very good introduction to people starting a new job in call centers environments, but do not expect too much by readin it.
