With its beginnings rooted in the languages and cultures of the French and English, Canadian cinema has, over time, become more representative, reflecting the interests and aspirations of Canada's many diverse communities and identities. In One Hundred Years of Canadian Cinema, George Melnyk offers a twenty-first-century perspective on a fascinating film tradition, the distinctness of which has attracted the attention of the global cinematic community.

Melnyk's historical survey is comprehensive in its cinematic scope. He examines the achievement of dramatic, documentary, and experimental filmmaking from the earliest days until the present, giving due attention to the cinemas of Quebec and to the cultural, political, and theoretical trends that have shaped contemporary film in Canada. Following an interpretive approach, Melnyk explores the beginnings of a national cinema in the silent era at the end of the nineteenth century; the dynamics of the industry in the 1920s, which provide a model for the industry's overall development; the rise of the NFB; the birth of a successful feature-film industry in Quebec in the forties; the tax-shelter era of the seventies; Canada's achievements in animation; and the important contributions of key feature films and their directors in articulating insights into the cultural grammars found in Canadian society throughout the past century.

Drawing on the insights of scholars, critics, and filmmakers to provide a coherent appraisal of the state of the film industry and Canada's cinematic art as it enters its second century, Melnyk weaves the history of English and French Canada together in an attempt to understand the achievements and, ultimately, the failures of a 'national cinema'. From Neighbours to Crash, Pour la suite du monde to Atanarjuat, and Goin' Down the Road to Maelström, Melnyk argues passionately that Canadian cinema has never been a singular entity, but has continued to speak in the languages and in the voices of Canada's diverse population. It is only through an ongoing and deepening exploration of diversity in Canadian film that its survival and evolution can be ensured.

Sort of shocked!?!?!.......2007-02-20

I am sort of shocked with the way this book and deck are being presented at the present time. I bought mine on a trip while I was in Seattle, WA and was very taken with both the text and book. Now as I looked to replace a worn out deck, from much good work done with it, I see one author has been dropped off the title? Yes surprised and shocked am I.

Now I am not political, but is the text the same, as with the other co-author? Her pleasant style lent much to what I found I loved about this set. IT gives a depth of meaning to the Runes others have seemed to have lacked. Or was this all re-worked by Nigel Jackson and if so then I honor that. If not then I must say I have a HUGE problem with this promotion. If it is only a "re-name" then this gives me great pause for thought in what this publisher is thinkging aobut. I gave this 1 star for this reason, the original was worth 5 or more in my book, I hope this posting is re-worked if this original work is still apart of this. If this is not a totally re-worked book along with the cards then I highly suggest you find a copy of the original to purchase.

excellent, accurate, postmodern...yet grounded in tradition.......2005-08-27

if you can't SEETHE into it (and you can filter the dross, yours and the material's), then try to minimize your possibly negative comments. this is a suberb item, both book and deck. it opens the parameters in ways that thorsson and aswynn do in similar but albeit different ways...

odd in that it is one of those rare Llewellyn books that matter.

Fluff and Pop Schlock from Nigel Jackson.......2004-12-18

Here we have the evidence of Nigel Jackson's true colors. He aligns his name with well known pop-schlock peddlar Silver Ravenwolf. While he attacks practices emergent in the nineteen-thirties through sixties, he has no qualms about attaching the word "Old" to a rune row derived in the late nineteen-nineties.
It is very clear that Jackson does not feel that real or in depth work is worth the effort if he can fill his pockets with silver from foisting half baked crap on the Pagan Federation's mindless neofundies. How appropriately he has been quoted as referring to them as "marks."

The previous review is not very accurate. In reality this comprehensive book and vivid symbolic deck are grounded firmly in Anglo-Saxon runic traditions, the Drycraeft and Wiccedom of Old England. Both authors have direct links with authentic currents of Teutonic folk-magic and present here a reliable and all-in-one exposition of High Runecraft within the context of Germanic Hexerei and Saxon Wiccedom. This is genuine Runic divination and Magic in a very accessible and authentic form - try it and see! Hail Woden and Freya!

Misleading.......2007-04-22

Some have bought this book believing that it has something to do with THE runes (the historical Futhark). They would be disappointed.

It may well be a nifty method of divination, however, the use of the word "runes" in the title is not only misleading, but may well offend those who follow the Northern Traditions. While there is no monopoly on the word, it does have a well accepted meaning as the Germanic writing system.

One can not help feeling that the author is merely cashing in on the word, sacred to many Asatruar, & exploiting its popularity. This book has nothing to do with the runes (as most understand the word).

This book is written in a way that takes you step by step through what runes are, how to make them and what they mean. Highly recommended!!!!

Good basic divination system for Witches.......2001-11-09

I really liked this little book. It's a quick read, but inspiring. Another reviewer here recommended traditional runes, but I, for one, have always been left a little flat by traditional runes, which are Norse in nature. I'm just not drawn to Norse mythology or systems, but this system is based on Pictish symbols (she claims), much more comfortable for me personally. I'm also quite drawn to 13 stones as a good number for a Witch. I'll just add that I do use tarot as well, but I like to have a variety of tools to choose from.

Aspersions were also cast on some of the authors' claims about Witchcraft...as I recall, the author does not say Witches ARE reincarnated fairies, but that they were THOUGHT TO BE reincarnated fairies. She does say that Witches are born, not made, but I'm not sure I disagree. The further I progress on my path, the more sure I am that I was born to it, and that others called here are born to it as well. I agree that the author makes Witchcraft a little more mystical than it probably needs to be (such as the idea that Witches are born with special psychic powers, when in fact, I believe that all people can probably learn to use their psychic abilities), but she correctly notes that all Witches are not Wiccan.

In any case, I liked this book, and while I plan to slightly change some of the symbols on the stones to fit me personally, the system is a basically sound one, the writing is pretty solid, and making your own runes--whatever system you use--is a good way to make a solid connection with your divinatory tools.

A wonderfully blessed system of divination.......2000-06-19

Rarely have i come accross such a powerful and delightful system of divination! The author leads the reader through step by step instructions on how to make their own rune stones,thus more greatly impowering them.The designs of the runes speak directly to the readers spirit.In my opinion these runes are a special blessing from the Gods,i cant imagine being without them.Overall i think that everyone who wishes to have a better system of divination should have this book. I LOVED IT!

misleading, misinformative, and overdone........1999-09-07

for one thing, this book calls itself "a witch's runes" but is not in actuality about classical runes. instead, it's a completely author-invented system of divination with archetypical symbols. this is quite misleading to those who think this is a book about divination using the classical runes for Wiccans. The author also claims that "witches are witches by birth, whether they practice the religion Wicca or not" and that witches "are reincarnations of Scottish faeries". OBVIOUSLY NOT TRUE! It creates a mockery of the Wiccan religion. The "spells and blessings" in the book are typical "mass-market spell book" fare, and some dance the line of being manipulative. I personally did not try any of the spells, although i would assume if the symbols on the stones trigger your own personal achetypes, they would work. Overall, buyer beware. I haven't tried using the stones for divination or spellwork, so they may have some redeeming value there, but i reccomend the Tarot or classical Runes greatly over this system.

Insightful work.......2005-12-30

This book addresses many significant problems in the world today (2003-to present) from the vantage point of the capitalist critic. It preaches localization of centralized governments in third world countries as alternatives to the dominating presence of the WTO and ICC. Although these organizations allow impoverished countries to create jobs, in many instances the respective jobs come at the expense of the entire communities' well-being (water privatization). The text ties pollution problems to the need to maintain the economic machine. If you see anything on your TV news source (CNN, FOX News) about WTO protests in large cities, and seem troubled, then read this book. It will explain why the people marching on your TV screen are so angry.

Dorval Brunelle is professor of sociology at the University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada.
