Book Description
This nostalgic text brims with gentle philosophies and descriptions of how we used to live —self-sufficiently — on land, in homes, and among things built by hand. The author's charming illustrations celebrate our heritage and the spirit that nurtured it, but also recall the vanished joys of America's pioneer past. 44 line illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
His other books are better.......2007-03-20
Once Upon a Time is a lament of the loss of the old ways. While it does have Sloane's trademark illustrations and observations, it constantly compares the old to the inferior modern ways. Written in 1982, not all the complaints still apply, and they detract from his usual, loving description of early America.
I grew up with A Reverance for Wood and A Museum of Early American Tools, which I always loved. This book is not up to the standard that Sloane set with his earlier work.
One Of My Favorites Since I Was Little.......2006-03-24
How can I possibly be the first person to review a book this magnificent? I love this book, and anyone with an ounce of curiosity about the past will as well. In here, Mr. Sloane, an antiquarian with a talent for making his love of the past infectious, tells us all about how Americans used to be hard working, efficient and self sustaining, how they made almost everything by hand and from scratch, and how the knowledge of arts and crafts from tool-making to house building, were passed down by word of mouth. On every page the reader learns some delightfully amazing new fact and by the book's end, a sense of enthusiasm and appreciation for our forebears is firmly established. Great illustrations are also a nice plus and the patient reverence Sloane has for this nation as it was two centuries ago bespeaks of sincerity, not empty lip-service. A fine book to read to a child, to look at for its pictures, or one that can teach almost any "grown-up" a thing or two about the ways things were. If you own this book and haven't read it in a while, take a quiet night off and reacquaint yourself with all it has to offer.

In the forest, Wusamequin, the young and handsome medicine man, looks to avenge the death of his wife and child at the hands of British soldiers. When Wusamequin spots Isabella and her father, he alerts his warriors to capture them. But Wusamequin is quite taken with how bravely Isabella battles. He orders the warriors to spare her and her tfather, and they are dragged back to their village. However, many members of the Mohican tribe still want them to be killed. In a desperate plea to Wusamequin, Isabella vows to stay as his hostage if he lets her father go.

Not spiritless..........2006-06-02
Spirited was generally a well-written story following the life of Isabella Stevens ("Mahwah") and her accounts of living in the Americas during the French and Indian War. Shortly after the intro, Isabella is captured by Native Americans and taken to their holdings with her father. While she struggles to save her father and herself, she is drawn to the Tribe's Shaman, Wusamequin, whom she owes her life. All the while we learn about Wusamequin and his life, or what was, at least.
Although meant to be loosely based on the tale of "Beauty and the Beast", I found this story more original than any retelling. It, too, is mainly about survival and the conflict of "forbidden" love. But Wusamequin is in no way beastly. He is seemingly handsome, intelligent, and caring, despite his efforts not to be. For this, his character was my favorite.
I didn't give the book full points because I feel Mahwah's instinct and common sense was horribly mistaken for courage, when really she would have been helpless without Wusamequin. But it wasn't enough for me not to enjoy the story.
This is an easy read with culture and dealings that I've never read before, and I think it can be enjoyable to practically anyone interested in the Once Upon a Time... series.
Two wolves... one beast...one beauty..........2006-02-10
"There was an old riddle among his people: There are two wolves in your heart. One wolf is fear and one wolf is courage. Both are evenly matched, and both are willing to fight to the death. And yet, one wolf will win. Which wolf is it?
The answer is: the one you feed."
I'm slowly working through the "Once Upon a Time" series. The reading of "Spirited" by Nancy Holder makes the fourth I have read. So far, I have no real complaints about the series. It is shaping up to be about what I expected and more, but allow me to talk about this particular addition.
It is early in America's history, May of 1756, during the beginning of the French and Indian War. Isabella Stevens is a young British woman trekking through the forest on her way to her Father's new posting as chief physician at Fort William Henry. They are traveling with Major Samuel Whyte and a troop of soldiers for protection. At the same time nearby their position a young native medicine man tries to heal a troubled heart. Wusamequin lost his wife and child to an attack by the British thirteen months before, and this slaughter left him severely wounded, broken, and incapable of revenge. For thirteen months he lie in wait, his thirst for blood unable to be quenched, until his spirit guide, Great Bear, informs him shows him the way to the British soldiers.
His heart lifted Wusamequin runs to tell his people of the presence of the soldiers in the woods. At the same time Isabella hears a strange voice whispering her name and then the word "Mahwah". She warns the others of this and they take precautions that there are enemies nearby. Soon their suspicions are confirmed as Wusamequin's tribe attacks them. Isabella is overpowered by a man who attempts to rape her but is stopped by the handsome Wusamequin, who was impressed by her fighting spirit. After a number of people are killed Isabella and her father are taken hostage. They manage to escape but Isabella is severely wounded in the flight and must be cared for by Wusamequin, who bargains with the chief to let her live. Suddenly Isabella is tormented, she feels connected to the young medicine man but also feels lost without her own people. Likewise, Wusamequin's heart is troubled because he feels the need to protect the young white skinned woman whom he calls "Mahwah" but also knows that she is of his people's enemy. This fact becomes muted as the two begin to fall irrevocably in love with one another and it becomes obvious that love transcends all boundaries.
There is a definite magical element to this storyline as well. There are the visions and abilities that Wusamequin displays that astound Isabella, for one thing. For another there is the matter of the little people, or Makiawisug, a mythological reference to a belief of the Mohegan people. These make the story take a turn from simple historic fiction to fantasy, but it is not an unwelcome diversion. For the most part a large portion of the story revolves around Wusamequin and Isabella presenting their differences to one another and ultimately accepting each others flaws and strengths as they fall deeper in love with one another. The fairy tale that Holder used as a loose base for the story is "Beauty and the Beast" and the notion that the beast was someone of a different race was something that intrigued me to read this, as I have always been an advocate for equality and multi-cultural unions. This is a beautiful story about courage and overlooking prejudice and presumptions to accept people as who they are.
another fantastic addition to the once upon a time series.......2005-11-17
1756, Isabella Stevens is on her way to the British stronghold Fort William Henry with her father. They are traveling along when they are all of a sudden attacked by a group of Indians avenging the death of their lost tribe members. All of a sudden, an Indian man who will not kill her captures Isabella. He wants to, but can't kill a creature with so much spirit. So instead of killing her he takes her as a slave. Only he doesn't treat her like the common slave, he is kind and gentle and very sweet. As Isabella becomes to know her captor she falls in love, as does he with her. But in the end Isabella must chose between her first and only love and her father. This story is magical, wonderful, and an awesome addition to the once upon a time series. This book also provides some amazing facts about the customs of the eastern woodland Indians.
Interesting Concept.......2005-10-26
Overall I thought this book was exceptionally well written. I very much enjoyed the few words that Natives used to help understand the ways of the First Nations people. I think for sure that this book would have been better if it was longer so it would be possible to sympathize and understand the characters' romance.
The only thing I disagreed with in this book was the 'joining of spirits' it's too farfetched. That was not what the Native people did, they did however, have medicine men to help free the spirits. I felt that this book did have quite accurate cultural information, however the ending didn't feel like an end at all. It was like she forgot to write a chapter or something or she didn't want to go into greater detail on what really happened to the main Character Mahwah/Isabella and her lover.
I would definitely recommend this book to all young adult readers who like romance books that aren't too cheesy. I like the little bit of culture gave us readers!
huh?.......2005-05-01
i just finished reading the book. it was rather good, the conflicts and overall the hole story. though i dont lik romance, the one portrayed in this novel fit is well and...humbly. the sotry did follow the movie version of beauty and the beast, for isabella dus giv herself as hostage 4 the release of her father (sumthign beauty dus in the disney animated movie) and the little sprites (fairy ppl) were equivalent of the talking pots and pans in the movie. however, the reason this book is given 4 stars is because of the ending. there hav been few bks that hav had worse endings, for it was confusing and downright not fit 4 the rest of the book. it was completely unexpected and didnt resolve any real conflicts. 2 anyone who wishes 2 engage themselves in thsi book, i suggest that u read up 2 the last several pgs of the book. only then, would the book b close 2 deserving 5 stars. u hav been warned!

Book Description
Get Rich or Die Tryin'
That's what this book is about -- the good times and the bad times. I wrote this book to explain the world I come from. To a lot of people, I may be too young to reflect on life. And they may be right. But I'd be wasting my blessings if I didn't use the attention I'm getting to shed light on the experiences that have caused me to say the things I say and make the kind of music I make. I want to explain my environment to those who don't come any closer to it than the records they buy or the images they see on television. People who want the truth. Even if they can't handle it, they want it. I let you know that I survived nine bullets not to sell records, but because it's the truth. Every time I sit down for an interview, I'm asked, "Well, 50, how did it feel to get shot nine times?" But those stories don't hold the weight of my pain, or the hope of my experience. It just can't. This is what happened when I was trying to get rich before I died in Southside Queens.
So begins From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens, a violent and introspective memoir that reveals not only 50's story but the story of a generation of youth faced with hard choices and very little options. A tale of sacrifice, transformation and redemption, but it is also one of hope, determination and the power of self. From Pieces to Weight drips with raw insight, street wisdom, and 50's struggle to survive at all costs...and behold the riches of the American Dream.

His record-breaking debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin' has sold over 12 million units worldwide, with the largest debut in SoundScan history. While his sophomore effort, The Massacre, sold over 1.14 million copies in its fi rst four days of release, he has since become the fi rst artist to have four songs in the top ten of Billboard's Hot 100 since The Beatles in 1964. His business empire includes: a record label (G-Unit Records, a division of Interscope Records), apparel/footwear ventures (G-Unit Clothing and footwear, joint ventures through the Ecko Clothing Company and Reebok, respectively), vitamin water (Formula 50, through Glacéau's Vitamin Water), watch line (G-Unit Watches, through Jacob & Co), and a video game (50 Cent: Bulletproof, through Vivendi Games). His future plans are to dominate the film and television worlds through two new G-Unit ventures in film and television...and his most prized project: the nonprofit organization The G-Unity Foundation, which aims to better the life of urban youth. Customer Reviews:
Harsh, thrilling, and scary. This book its great!.......2007-04-17
From Pieces To Weight was a great book and I gave it five stars because of the writer's vivid descriptions of the harsh things that he experienced in his life. 50 Cent had to go through a really rough life. His mom died when he was a kid and he never new who his father was. 50 Cent knew he was going to be a drug dealer because everyone in his family sold drugs. I'm not going to give away the rest of the book but I suggest you read this book, it is really good.
Decent book for 50 Cent fans.......2007-03-22
I recently purchased this book for my fiance, who, obviously, loves 50 Cent. He read the first 50 pages the day it arrived, and I must tell you, he is NOT the type of person to sit down and read a book. It's about 50's life in Southside Queens and his experiences as a child up until his fame. While my fiance finds this book inspirational and exciting, I find the writing style to be fairly simple with 50 reiterating well-known facts (ex. You can't have life without death) and also presenting himself as an arrogant, almost martyr-type of character. Why do I say that? He talks about himself and his experiences in life (which may or may not be exaggerated) and repeatedly states that what he has gone through should be used as an example to others. He blames the media for his portrayal as a "bullet riddled rapper" but obviously, 50 uses it to his advantage without much complaint. He tries to come off as a mentor and inspiration, but I really did find him irritating at times. I think their are better role models for others to look up to. I'd rather read Sidney Poitier's memoirs than idolize 50 Cent. But that's just my view. For 50 Cent lovers, they'll be inspired and amazed.
From Pieces to Weights .......2007-01-13
I read the book From Pieces to Weights, by 50 cent. This book showed me how the streets are a hard place. There are a lot of people that think the streets are a horrible place and that there dangerous. Well they are dangerous, but there not horrible and many people think that there are horrible people that live in the area. This book showed me that many people on the streets hustling are really trying to find themselves. This book also showed me not to judge the people that are selling the drugs.
This book really touched me with what 50 cent was going though. His mom was killed for selling drugs and then he went and started to sell drugs. I really think he didn't have a choice because it's what he saw everyday. He watched his aunts and uncles and everyone else on the streets, and he probably thought that it was the right thing to do. This book was very well writing and I got hooked to it. I think 50 cent did a great job at telling his story.
I would recommend this book to anyone, I think mostly people who don't really know about the streets because it tells you a lot. I wouldn't recommend this book to people that do not like bad language used a lot. This book was very entertaining. I suggest you read it.
his book is the best.......2007-01-10
when I read his book he had some facts that I didn't know about. his book should reach the #1 spot on the book list.
Much better than I thought it would be.......2006-12-31
Pieces to Weight is really good. It is a straightforward and interesting read and gives you a glimpse into the forces that created 50 Cent and sustain his own continuing evolution of his image. It answers a lot of the street questions you may have about him, puts you in on street drug deals with him, and pulls you through a lot of his painful, sometimes scary and frustrated life. You rehabilitate with him though his excruciatingly painful injuries while the people around him go in and out of his life, sometimes supporting him and sometimes betraying him.
If you are curious about the forces that forged the man, and you enjoyed works like Pimp, the Story of my Life by Iceberg Slim or the Donald Goines series of books, this one will be a great read for you. Careful, your friends will "borrow" it and you won't ever see it again.
50 defers to Eminem, but he is the world-wide poster child for hard core, gangsta rap. One of the attributes (besides the "glamour" of being shot five times and surviving) that separates him from the rest is his attention to the details of his work, his professionalism, and the quality of his product. 50's music (from Dr. Dre and the other elite of the industry), plus his own growth as a musician, producer and hook writer has the unmistakable stamp of realism, talent and hard work. Some people, like me, think this equals genius. No wonder everything he touched turned to gold (platinum).
Love him or hate him, 50 is a mirror image of our society which is prudish about sex but glorifies violence, that sometimes treats our fellow citizens in the inner city like foreigners to either ignore or oppress. He literally is our creation. Facinating read.

good for what it does, but..........2007-08-05
This is good for what it does -- interpreting the body actions you and others display at the poker table. And some of the stuff is helpful. it will improve your game.
But body language is not nearly as important as other things. Like understanding which hands to play, how to put other players on hand ranges, how stack size influences play, and so on.
So you are better off reading a bunch of other books first. this might be the 6th or so book i'd recommend reading.
Good Book.......2007-08-03
For the beginning player. I've used some of the information I read here and won pots I shouldn't have. That in itself pays for the cost of the book.
Good Book.......2007-07-16
This was a birthday gift for my husband and he has already read it 3 times. He couldn't put it down for the first read through.
Basic Poker Information.......2007-05-09
If you are new to poker then this book might be worth the money. Frankly, anyone who has watched TV Poker for more than a year has probably picked up most of this stuff from the commentators. Today everyone is an expert, and lots of the stuff they spout is from Caro's book. So newbies will find it useful, but anyone who has played awhile or watched much TV poker might not get much out of it.
Great book.......2007-05-07
The mad genius knows his stuff. great book to add to your poker library.
Customer Reviews:
A Goldmine!!!.......2003-05-20
Caro's Book of Tells is essential to cracking a tough game.
Mike Caro gives the reader an excellent insight into the psychology of poker and explains the meaning of opponents' actions and verbals. He unlocks the secrets to reading opponents perfectly and helps the reader understand how to remain "tell-less" when he/she is the one in the hot-seat.
If you sit in an easy game, this book will transform you from being a consciencious winner to being a consistantly massive winner. This is no exaggeration!
Also, if you sit in a tough game, Caro will give you a huge edge over those who haven't read the Book of Tells, and hence your profits will soar.
[...] Anyone who reads the Book of Tells will earn back the cost price in their first hour at the tables after reading it: I certainly did.
Caro's Book of Tells is essential reading for anyone attempting to achieve poker supremacy.
It is a literary Goldmine that no player should be without.
way overrated.......2002-11-28
This is a classic of poker literature, it's true, but I think it's overrated and ranks way down the list of essentials. There are at least 20 other poker books I would recommend before it. The problem is that applying the book's concepts is really a very nebulous business.
Essential for any psychologist........johnnyhughes.com.......1999-04-01
I use this book when I teach body language--kinesics. Any people watcher will love it and it is so true. Read it to keep from flashing your own tells.....johnnyhughes.com
Very helpful book on the psychology of poker........1998-10-08
This book is bound to improve your game in at least two ways. First, other players will begin revealing their hands to you -- and you won't even have to pay to see them. Second, it will cause you to reevaluate your own actions (tells). Many players try to "tell" their opponents disinformation. However, Caro (and his readers) see right through this "first grade psychology", and find the real meaning in tells. Knowing what they look for is the first step in the process of getting rid of your own tells.
A good addition but take with a grain of salt.......1998-08-01
This is a clever book that tends to take itself a bit too seriously. The pictures are great and there is a large bit of insight to be gained from this book. The best book for increasing your poker winnings? NO. Worth buying? Yes.

Book Description
Presenting more than 70 tools, The Reinventor's Fieldbook includes hundreds of practical "lessons learned," "do's and don'ts," "steps to take," and "pitfalls to avoid" in public management and governance. Based on dozens of case studies from five countries, it covers the waterfront of high-performance public organizations, including: customer choice and customer service standards, performance measurement, and performance budgeting; employee empowerment and labor-management partnerships; managed competition and asset privatization; partnerships with communities; culture change strategies; and administrative system reform.
Customer Reviews:
Useful hands-on information on the many tools available.......2004-08-19
Government has no choice but to look for ways to work better. The push for reform of public administration is real, and fortunately there are numerous success stories from some reinvention pioneers that can help light the path toward improvement for the rest of us. The text profiles a fairly comprehensive package of the tools. Most reforms or best practices approaches should not seek to duplicate others' successes but rather should be viewed as guidance by illustrating successful principles for adapation. This volume provides excellent profiles of successes and useful information that should be invaluable to those seeking such guidance. This volume will be one of many resources my county is using to develop its performance initiative to ensure we are operating in a manner consistent with the public's expectations for our use of their dollars.
Therapy.......2002-09-01
The only thing this book is missing is a guide to the therapy you'll need when you fail to succeed. Many of the successes have turned to failure--you can succeed for a year or two, then you're out of businesses. These folks are charlatans of the worst kind. They encourage you to take great risks, come around to get your story, but are no where to be found when the governor or mayor or vice president leave office.
One Of A Kind.......2000-10-17
For most people government means bureaucracy. Not anymore. The Reinventor's Fieldbook lays out a new organization that will grab your imagination and focus it on performance. The book describes "how to" build a high performance government organization. It is filled with tools, stories, and references from all over the world. The hard research has been done for you.
Frankly I didn't think you could compile this much information and make it manageable. But the extraordinary research provided in the Reinventor's Fieldbook is presented in an easy to use format. Tools and methods are tied to issues of governing. The Reinventor's Fieldbook is one of a kind. It is the "how to" guide for delivering high performance government service.
Wow! Compendium works........2000-10-13
Wow! I was pleasantly surprised to find that this collection of how-to's for reinvention is very accessible. Having worked with David Osborne I knew there was a ton of good information for this book, but I was concerned that it could be made useful. David and Pete have found a format that works.
What reinvention is REALLY like.......2000-09-26
"The Reinventor's Fieldbook" is a great resource for anyone trying to reinvent/reform/transform/reengineer a government organization. It tells human stories that illustrate how your counterparts have tried, stumbled, and succeeded, at least partially.
It makes vivid the issues of serving customers, winning compliance, and changing culture. I felt like I had lived through Osborne's and Plastrik's stories.
