Book Description
Categories of analysis in the social sciences include the binary pair ‘nature’ and ‘culture’, as defined by western societies. Anthropologists have often imputed these categories to the world-views of non-western people and the construct has acquired the status of a universal. It has been further argued that culture (that which is regulated by human thought and technology) is universally valued as being superior to nature (the unregulated); and that female is universally associated with nature (and is therefore inferior and to be dominated) and male with culture. The essays in this volume question these propositions. They examine the assumptions behind them analytically and historically, and present ethnographic evidence to show that the dichotomy between nature and culture, and its association with a contrast between the sexes, is a particularity of western thought. The book is a commentary on the way anthropologists working within the western tradition have projected their own ideas on to the thought systems of other peoples. Its form is largely anthropological, but it will have a wide appeal within the social sciences and the humanities, especially among those interested in structuralist thought and women’s studies.

Book Description
Picasso's extraordinary capacity to work in a variety of mediums and styles has amazed his critics since the first years of the century. This collection of critical and personal reactions to Picasso at every stage of his career provides a remarkable account of the many innovations and changes of direction that baffled his contemporaries. Picasso's working methods and his attitudes to his own art are also revealed in conversations and in letters and statements by his closest friends.
A Picasso Anthology contains a wide range and variety of contemporary responses to Picasso and his art. There are essential passages from books by his close friends, including Apollinaire, Cocteau, and Roland Penrose; an important body of Catalan and Spanish criticism; reactions from English critics, including Roger Fry and John Middleton; a remarkable collection of Russian criticism of his cubist work, written in the years just before the Revolution; and Czech, Danish, and Italian articles, as well as mainstream texts from France and Germany.

A tour of Marilyn's hometown.......2007-01-08
Hometown Girl covers tons of addresses and places in Los Angeles that are connected to Marilyn Monroe. For someone who loves Marilyn Monroe and Los Angeles, this is a perfect book. There are pictures of the places as they were back when Marilyn was there, and also how they look now, as well as other related pictures. The book also contains drawn maps of several areas of L.A.
It's interesting to follow Marilyn's footsteps in her hometown, the town she was born in, the town she created her career in, the town she left only to return later, and of course, the town she died in.
The information in this book is reliable, and the book is clearly a work of love. I highly recommend this book to any Marilyn Monroe fan.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Great for yoga lovers! Insightful...........2007-02-18
This book would make a great little gift for the yoga lovers in your life. Each chapter is short and readable in mere minutes. Yet, each chapter is insightful and will give you something to think about. Beautiful too. Highly recommended!
A ton of wisdom in a small package.......2005-11-20
Julie Rappaport has compiled a book that is chock full of insights and revelations. Even though there are the expected gems from such classic yoga texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras, Rappaport has also included tidbits from modern yoga masters such as Erich Schiffman. But that's not all! There are descriptions of poses, quotations from Jung and other philosophers, poetry and Rappaport's own musings on yoga.
You may decide to go through this book, a quote a day - or just pick one at random. It is a book that any yoga pracitioner will turn to time and time again. I love it!
Inquiry into Yoga.......2004-10-03
I have found Julie Rappaport's book 365 Yoga: Daily Meditations to be an insightful look into the world of yoga. This book steps beyond the usual yoga pose instruction into the deeper meanings and questions that face a modern practioner of yoga. As a yoga teacher, I find the quotes helpful sometimes for my own practice and at other times to read aloud in class.
Highly Recommended.......2004-10-02
This book is a great inspiration and resource for yoga practitioners. I enjoyed randomly opening up to a section, then using what I read to help inspire my practice. It also works well as a one-a-day reading. Highly recommended for yoga practitioners and those seeking to ground their physical practice in the spiritual and poetic.
A great read.......2004-09-16
As a student new to yoga, I found this book fantastically helpful. I really enjoyed the quotations which I thought well chosen and a good introduction to the philosophy behind the exercises. The book is well laid out and easily digestible, something important to me as a beginner and I was impressed by the author's own writings and her obvious love for her subject. I'm sure this book will appeal to both newcomer and old hand, I thought it a wonderful read and it has certainly inspired me to look deeper into the practice.
Book Description
Happiness begets happiness. When a person is happy, the feeling ripples out to others nearby. Research has shown that happiness also leads to better health. One-third of the population knows the secret to happiness - that it's an inside job, not contingent on possessions, status, or even life circumstances. Fortunately, the other two-thirds can learn to cultivate contentment. This book offers 365 concrete ways to experience more happiness. Many have to do with changing one's outlook and learning to lift one's spirit in the moment; others address everything from eating habits and interactions with others to sleeping patterns and taking nutritional supplements. Some of the tasks are lighthearted, others quite serious. They all will have a positive effect on mind, body, and spirit.

Daily Goldmine.......2007-04-07
This book was among the best of daily readings I've ever read. The tips are short and to the point, and are useful for anyone--physically, mentally, and spiritually. M. J. Ryan has put together many useful books, and this is one which I will buy several for gifts. It's that good!
Increase Your Happiness Now.......2005-08-04
This little book is chock full of helpful suggestions
from the very "easy to get along with" author, MJ
Ryan. What I love the most about this book is
that Ms. Ryan offers such a variety of ideas AND
she shares ideas that DON'T work for her that
MAY be helpful to you. She doesn't make those
ideas WRONG, she simply says "I don't value
this but many do" such as Walking Meditation... and
she gripes about exercise yet asks you to do it
and maybe, then, she will feel energized to
exercise, too.
Some of my favorite suggestions include
creating a drawer of happinesss enhancers,
Call in Well (this is on my Son's birthday, May
6... it isn't a national holiday YET!).... Walking
Meditation... (I love walking meditation, works
wonders for me..... and is on August 19, my daughter
Emma's birthday).... and Dedicate this Day...
by sending positive loving feelings to someone
in need (this is on December 25, my daughter
Katherine's birthday.)
This book is a perfect one to use as a daily
companion, taking one day at a time - or for
a quick pick-me-up, thumb to any page
and apply what you learn.
Great stuff!
A Friend Indeed.......2002-02-06
This book is so much fun! I've only been working with it for a week but I can definitely feel a change, a lift in my spirits. By reading only one day's suggestion (okay, it's really tempting to read ahead, but resist the urge!) you have a fresh idea to anticipate and savor each day. You'll be invited to ponder questions that gently unlock happiness-enhancing insights. It is like having a friend along on the daily journey of life, a wise and supportive voice that helps keep you focused on the simple and readily available means of fostering your own happiness.
thoughtful desk companion.......2000-07-21
M.J. Ryan is a fantastic writer who brings truly heart warming wisdom onto the pages of this book. It's a great book to keep at work or at your desk at home fora brief uplifting note on those though days. Suggestions such as "hold a pity party," "commit to loving better" and "identify your hot buttons," Ryan offers ways to free up you rmind, body, and spirit.
Book Description
Puzzlers can have challenging fun every day of the year with 365 problem-solving exercises to test and sharpen their skills. Numbers, words, logic, concentration, creativity: they're all worked out. Puzzle icons at the top of each page explain exactly which ability is being tested and the difficulty level. Look at a diagram and figure out how many square and rectangles it would have if the diagonal lines were removed. Arrange a block of text alphabetically to find out what the 13 word would be. Complete a magic square so that it contains all the numbers from 1 to 25, and so that the sum of each line, column, and the two diagonals come to 65. These mental gymnastics will definitely keep the mind in top shape.

Customer Reviews:
Reality check for investors.......2006-10-31
This is a thick book, but it reads pretty easily. The main message is that there are no easy profits in the stock market. There's no profit without risk, and that means you can lose your money just as easily as make money. He starts each chapter with a "fable," a story of some gullible investor who follows one of the conventional strategies for stock profits (for example, buy low p/e stocks) and, after losing money, finds out it's not that simple. Rather than simply debunking all the traditional stock market investing strategies, he explores how much, if any, truth there is each one, and how you would need to practice that strategy in order to make money. For example, instead of simply screening for low p/e stocks, you would need to add other criteria in order to avoid the real losers. The strategies he investigates are
High dividend
Low P/E
Low Price to Book Value Ratio
Stable earnings
Superior management
Growth stocks
Contrarian
Small Caps and IPOs
Mergers and Acquisitions
Arbitrage
Momentum
Insiders and Experts
Market timing
Buy and Hold
All in all, it's well-written and interesting. The author is a professor, but he writes for a general audience.
The problem is that his whole approach here is in terms of CLASSES of stocks, rather than individual stocks. He assumes that investors find stocks using stock screening software only, while for most investors that is only a first step. Fro example, Damodarn assumes that contrarian investors buy a stock ONLY because it's gone down in price. But contrarian investors look for stocks which have been beaten down in price unfairly. They look at the whole company, its strengths, weaknesses, and potential for growth. Damodaran's comments mostly apply to mutual funds and asset classes (e.g. small growth). His argument is based on statistical performance of asset classes, but most stock investors buy invidual stocks based on a variety of criteria.
Well researched and balanced book.......2006-06-21
This book is a very accessible overview of finance research on most major investing strategies (or themes). The author introduces each chapter with a short story and then builds the case around each investing theme. The bottom line is that there is no investing "silver bullet" - which is probably intuitive, but often neglected in the search for a magical investing potion.
The major contribution of this book is to address each one of the investing themes (Low P/E, Low P/S etc.) in great depth and actually build model portfolios. Damodaran has comprehensive command of his material and presents concepts in a very readable manner. If you are looking for an in-depth treatment of investment strategies, this is a great book.
There is no "can't miss"investment strategy but...........2006-04-20
Damodaran has written a valuable book that can certainly be described as an antidote to the various crazes that affects many stock market investors at some period in their lives. It is certainly true that the vast majority of stock market participants do not have the time, intuition, experience, temperment, and training to emulate Warren Buffett. Thus,in generel, the argument that one(one of the ten myths covered by the author)should do exactly what Buffett is doing, irrespective of any and all relevant differences between an average investor and Buffett, is flawed. There is ,however, one exception. That exception turns ,not on buying the stocks that Buffett(or Lynch or Soros)is buying, but on getting out of the market and selling if all of the three wise men(Soros,Lynch,Buffett) are getting out.Following them out of the market will not make you a lot,but it will save you a lot of losses. For example, between September, 1999 and March,2000,Soros,Buffett,and Lynch liquidated practically all of their stock market holdings in Nasdaq stocks,as well as much of their other stock holdings, the one major exception being Buffett's holdings of Coca-Cola. Market participants following this strategy, who got out by copying the three wise men, did not suffer any of the estimated 8-10 Trillion dollars in losses suffered by investors who continued to hold stocks based on the myth of " BUY AND HOLD AND then buy some more" after the inevitable dip gives way to another upward movement. The other major point that is missing from the author's overall perspective is that he still is not differentiating between conditions of risk(a mean -standard deviation-known probability distribution)and ambiguity(no accurate or reliable, unique, mean or standard deviation can be calculated). This lacuna is evident in all of the author's books in this field. The work of Keynes,Ellsberg, and Mandelbrot needs to be integrated into the main body of his analysis.
Damodaran Succeeds Again.......2004-04-07
I have every one of Damodaran's books, and they have all helped me greatly. This book is no exception. If you want to gain investment knowledge without the pain and losses most people suffer, read his books. Take a look at Damodaran's web site also. The web casts of his classes at NYU are fantastic.
