Over the course of the past 35 years, California-based fine art publisher Crown Point Press has established one of the finest reputations in the printmaking and publishing world. Founded by Kathan Brown, the press is most renowned for its innovative and experimental uses of the oldest and most traditional printmaking processes: etching and woodcut. Under Brown's direction, Crown Point's master printmakers have worked on an astonishingly broad array of projects, including those of John Cage, Tom Marioni, and Pat Steir. The press has also printed and published important minimalist and conceptual graphics, as well as editions by such painterly painters as Richard Diebenkorn, Francesco Clemente, and Helen Frankenthaler. More than 200 full-color, beautifully reproduced prints in this softcover volume document the entire history and development of Crown Point, confirming its unique and enduring contribution to the transformation of 20th-century printmaking.Book Description
Crown Point Press in San Francisco, founded in 1962 by Kathan Brown, is a world-renowned center of contemporary printmaking. It has published work by such major figures as Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Sol LeWitt, and Wayne Thiebaud, while bringing to attention prints by many younger artists, including April Gornik, Anish Kapoor, Eric Fischl, and Francesco Clemente. Crown Point Press is known for presenting social and political issues in a range of printmaking media, from hard- and soft-ground etching to drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint.Customer Reviews:
A Record of Achievement.......2002-06-02
The first essay is a history of Crown Point Press, and particularly of the unique vision and direction given to the Press by its founder and first printer, Kathan Brown. Although occasionally tedious (as when it lapses into lists of the artists who worked at the Press during a particular period), this essay provides interesting discussions of Brown's evolving philosophy, her interactions with artists belonging to various art movements, the different goals of the artists, and so on. You also get a small glipse into the economics of print publishing.
The second and third essays were what I found most interesting. Karin Breuer shows how the working proofs contained in the Press's archive document the artist at work, and the very different working methods that can be effective for different artists. Steven Nash discusses the interrelationships between an artist's work in printmaking and his or her work in other media.
Two-thirds of the book is the exhibition catalogue, which shows the truly amazing breadth and quality of the work done at Crown Point over the years. Although Brown has had a particular affinity for Minimalist and Conceptual art, she has invited interesting artists across a wide spectrum of "isms" to work at the Press, and the list of participating artists reads like a "who's who" of American art in the second half of the 20th Century. Particularly significant artists at Crown Point have included Richard Diebenkorn, John Cage, Wayne Thiebaud and Sol LeWitt, all of whom are well represented in the catalogue.
This is certainly not a "how to" book, and it is probably still too soon to be able to look back and really say "yes, this artist or movement was significant," or "this Press made a difference in American art," or even "this is the lasting contribution made by the post-WWII resurgence in printmaking." This book provides an important record, however, of 35 years at one of the most important American printer/publishers, and as such makes it easier to think about these questions and begin to glimpse answers.

Jonathan Tisdall reports all the news from ringside. Also includes every game (unannotated) played between Kasparov and Karpov, as of June 1991, by opening. Yasser Seirawan, one of the top US grandmasters was a match commentator in New York and Lyon. Jonathan Tisdall is a chess correspondent for Reuters. Algebraic notation, 256 pages. (I.C.E., 1991).Customer Reviews:
Deeply annotated. Excellent book for advanced players........2003-07-24
But beware. This book is not for sub-master players. You might still enjoy it, but following along will be challenging.
Strangely, there are tons of diagrams, nearly 500 for only 24 games. Normally, I would expect lots of diagrams for a beginner's book, but this is for advanced players. Well, it turns out that the diagrams ALWAYS go with the move immediately preceding, not necessarily the bold-faced game move. Seirawan has diagrammed the variations! Once you get used to this, it's actually a great boon. It means that a player advanced enough to understand the variations can read this book without a board.
However, I am only about 1500, and I simply cannot follow Mr. Seirawan without a chess board. I'm not sure I can follow him at all. The variations are much more extensive than in his Winning Chess Brilliancies, which I highly recommend to intermediate players.
Do not buy this book to learn chess strategy. You won't. Buy it for the dramatic history of the match. Buy it to have some fun seeing the relative strengths and weaknesses of these 2 great players. Buy it for serious study. And buy my copy from me, because it's way over my head.
A modern classic!.......2000-08-26

Five Star Science Fiction/Fantasy - Lucifer's Crown (Five Star Science Fiction/Fantasy)
Lillian Stewart Carl Manufacturer: Five Star ProductGroup: Book Binding: Board book Similar Items:

Book Description
Lives change drastically when they enter myth-haunted Glastonbury. Over them looms Robin Fitzroy, formerly Robert the Devil, father of William the Conqueror. Now immortal, he serves Lucifer himself. Only Thomas Becket, the great English saint, knows who Robin really is. Now, he discovers that it's up to him to save the souls of mankind from Robin's clutches.Customer Reviews:
a pleasant surprise.......2004-07-02
Stewart Carl's strongest point by far is her character creation and development. Thomas Beckett, the sinful saint who let someone else die in his place and has lived with this moral flaw for centuries, is simply fascinating. He is sinner and saint, scholar and warrior, human and angelic ... all in one. The author manages to combine all these traits into what has become one of my favorite fictional characters ever.
Her skills also become apparent in the rest of the cast. A middle-aged university instructor, who is deicated, smart, and witty, but who is also thoroughly disappointed with life and men. A young girl who embodies goodness and purity while still being human and likeable. And so son.
The plot is fascinating as well, a classical good vs. evil story set in modern-day Britain. The author manages to include enough new ideas, interpretations, and twist into this 'old' story that it is a joy to read it all over again. Every page is a pleasure to read, and I could not put the book down until I was done in one night.
original good vs. evil tale.......2003-10-01
In the present, he is living in Temple Manor in Glastonbury guarding one third of the Holy Grail. His path crosses that of Maggie Sinclair and Rose Kildaire who, along with Scotsman Mick Dewar, are the key to finding the stone, the second part of the grail. On the eve of the new millennium these four reluctant warriors are enjoined by the Lady to unite the book to the stone and the cup to ensure another millennium of life for humanity. Trying, to stop them is Robin Fitzroy, a being who long ago allied himself with the dark principalities. If Robin can stop them, the world will enter the End Times.
LUCIFER'S CROWN uses the archetypes from many different cultures, legends, and myth to create an original good vs. evil story line. The characters are what make this plot so unique because all the protagonists are fatally flawed yet reject evil again and again even when they are tempted beyond measure. Hearts will go out to Becket, a man who has lived eight centuries and never loses faith even though he has yet to find his own ease of heart.

Public Finance: A Normative Theory, Second Edition
Richard W. Tresch Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0126990514 |
Book Description
Featuring a general equilibrium framework that is both cohesive and versatile, the Second Edition of Public Finance: A Normative Theory brings new and updated information to this classic text. Through its concentration on the microeconomic theory of the public sector in the context of capitalist market economics it addresses the subjects traditionally at the heart of public sector economics, including public good theory, theory of taxation, welfare analysis, externalities, tax incidence, cost benefit analysis, and fiscal federalism. Its goal of providing a foundation, rather than attempting to present the most recent scholarship in detail, makes this Second Edition both a valuable text and a resource for professionals.Customer Reviews:
