Customer Reviews:
I finally Played My own short composition with this Book!.......2007-04-05
I'm a big fan of Smooth Jazz and I read just about everything on the subject. I bought this book with the view towards developing my very own unique jazz rhythm. I'm not a very accomplished pianist but my husband is a super player. Unfortunately, he is not a big fan of Jazz. So, I just winged my lessons from this book alone and here are my thoughts on the book.
I thought the book worked very well for me. I easily understood the how to create various rhythms. The CD that came with it was super and an excellent learning tool. I now play my own style of smooth jazz. I'm sure I won't be cutting a CD for a recording studio, but I'm happy. My husband just shakes his head.
If you enjoy novels that promote Smooth Jazz (I've found that there are very few) I highly recommend Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders. In the novel the character Della Ross has a quintet that consists of a drummer, saxophonist, trumpeter, bassist and the pianist, Della Ross. I retyped an excerpt from the novel for your pleasure.
Standing to the left side of the piano, the core of her touring quintet held their instruments and waited with a smile for a cue from Della. They were known throughout the Jazz world as the premier quintet that consisted of a drummer, saxophonist, bassist, and a trumpeter.
Their performance outfits were the same; white shirts with black bowties; satin, gleaming dark blue jackets that were accented with wide black lapels; matching trousers, which bore shapes of black satin down the seams, breaking perfectly over their shiny black shoes and their neat hair slicked back.
Della's long, thin fingers struck the piano keys and she played a solo chorus for about one minute then she looked to her left. Her eyes gave the cue that her quintet had seen so many times before.
Lenny Wiles, the bassist, the only member of her original quintet, began rippling down the neck of his bass, while his other hand began thrumming up from the depths of his string instrument that gave a rich, dark comforting sound.
In the background, Eddie Cochran's drumsticks would put a fill to the smooth rhythm with light touching patterns on his drums and cymbals.
Without any cue from Della, Marcus Malone, a distinguished looking black man in his late forties, placed the saxophone to his lips and blew the air effortlessly from his lungs, creating a sound that was so deep and earthy that it just shook the senses of everyone in the audience.
After Malone's short set was over, Moses Patterson, a short, black man, stepped forward a few paces. The soft lighting caught the brass trumpet and the twinkling rays reflected into the air. He raised the trumpet and ripped his bony fingers across its keys with a graceful confidence that everyone quickly understood that the sound they were hearing was from a master trumpeter.
This is an excellent read and worthy of any Jazz enthusiasts attention.
Great book!.......2007-01-13
If you have some experience with Jazz this book is excellent! It is very logical and methodical in it's lay out and easy to understand. If you go through it step by step you will come out at the end with a much better understanding of how to identify and voice chords for any jazz application.
Excellent Choice For Improving Jazz Phrasing.......2006-12-08
Before buying this book I have to say: It helps to have some keyboard experience and to know how to read music. Smooth Jazz Piano does a good job of introducing theory, harmony, voicing and melodies (not riffs). You'll get a nice helping hand in soloing or improvising but you'll probably want to get another cd or transcribe to improve in these areas. I HIGHLY recommend this book for the student of contemporary/smooth jazz.
Concentrated instruction with a great CD.......2006-11-16
The heart and soul of this book are the great short exercises and extended compositions that are excellently rendered on the included CD. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of this book drip smooth jazz just the way you hear it on the radio. It is very helpful to see this beautiful music written out and to hear it on the CD. Harrison illustrates each new playing technique with a very musical example that is fun to practice. He ties it all together with seven beautiful but practical compositions in the last chapter. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 are a bit thin. Harrison moves very quickly through the theory. Playing through the exercises in Mark Harrison's The Pop Piano Book will be really helpful in mastering Smooth Jazz Piano, particularly to master Harrison's upper structure over root chord voicings. For an advanced player, this is a stand alone book. The intermediate player will benefit by playing through the exercises in The Pop Piano Book, before moving on the Smooth Jazz Piano.
everything you need.......2006-11-02
This book includes important information about the differences between various jazz styles and what makes each one unique. It starts off nice and easy talking about the importance of scales and modes in jazz and quickly moves on to the harmonies and voicings that make jazz stand out. It goes through some styles of the great smooth jazz pieces, making rhythms easy to comprehend. It also goes into soloing techniques, which can be scary, but this book makes the ideas make sense. The book moves quickly but provides the information that is important for those of us looking to play. It comes with a very handy CD which allows to hear what it's supposed to sound like. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
In this moving story, the reader will sense an air of greedy anticipation as it reveals particular aluminum cans that 56-year-old Zoie Baker gathers along the rural roads to raise the money to build a swimming pool for the children of her community. During this quest, the reader will find a story connected to special cans: a gold Budweiser can, a green Mountain Dew can, a Santa Claus Coca-Cola can, and a NEHI can. With each special can, the reader will be going on another special journey with Zoie; from the romantic but turbulent time of World War II, through the tumultuous decade of the 1960's; and ending with Zoie gathering cans during the 1980's. There is magic, not just because of the wondrous characters, but also the friendships formed and the joys and the sorrows realized by each unique character.

Authentic Characters are Combined with an Awesome Story! .......2007-09-23
I think what made me excited about reading this book was the scope of the story revolving around cans...plain old cans. Once I started reading Gathering of Cans I just couldn't put it down. I found the stories of the cans to be unique, incredible and heartbreaking. And when I was done reading the story I could not stop thinking about the characters and how the author tied their wonderful life experiences to the Mountain Dew can, Budweiser can, the Christmas Coca-Cola can and the Nehi Can.. The characters were very likable, and the descriptions were super and not too drawn out. Also, the characters are skillfully woven from every perspective, soldier, sibling love, musician, outdoorsman, victim, bully, husband, wife, and they seemed authentic, and not contrived. I really liked how Mr. Saunders was able to capture so many character's feelings and thoughts. Also, I do applaud the author in his ability to bring all these character together with the main character Zoie and create an awesome ending that caused me to reach for a tissue. Plus it didn't leave any loose ends; everything was closed up; leaving me with no lingering doubts about the story. If you're searching for a terrific, well-written women's novel then this is the book for you. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to all my friends. Have a good day!
Unlike anything I've ever read..........2007-09-05
Where to start... I was so overwhelmed by the errors in this book, both technical and substantive, that I am not certain that my one-star rating is fair to the overall plot. But, based alone on such a flawed product I would never be able to recommend this book.
At the center of this novel is Zoie, a woman generally loved by her community but considered an eccentric by some, who has set for herself the challenge of building a swimming pool for children. She raises money by collecting discarded aluminum beverage cans and then sells them for recycling. Her motivation for this project is revealed along the way, although the reason for this money-raising method is not. Thus, in this quest, five of her mid-to-later years are passed, scouring highways and byways, fields and streams, alleys and restaurants, and the like. During this time, she happens upon selective old cans that stir her memories--those of important times, relationships, and experiences. Hence, the title is, I believe, a metaphor for the drawing together of memories.
NOW, if you don't mind a healthy dose of typos and/or misspellings; AND if you aren't at times bothered by the disregard of accepted standard language usage (e.g., the relative pronoun "that" being used often and throughout, instead of "who" when the antecedent is a person); AND if awkward syntax doesn't interrupt the narrative flow for you (e.g., "residing at" instead of "located at" in referencing places); AND if punctuation errors aren't problematic (e.g., use of quotation marks in paragraphing); AND if "alright" is all right with you...THEN this might be a book you could enjoy.
ALSO, if you can accept the concept of remembrances of a person who wasn't a part of a good many of the recalled events; AND if you can believe in a story in which every main character--except two bad guys--is exceptional in ability, relationships, and/or careers, given each is out of a lower-middle working class Baltimore neighborhood (I grew up in Baltimore); AND if you like very, very long, tangential stories that may enhance but not advance the story; AND if you want to know head-to-toe attire, including style and fabric texture and color, of practically all who move across these pages; AND if you're turned on by love-making scenes with graphic descriptions in what seem the author's stretch to write steamy sex; AND if you do not mind an author who summarily declares how things are rather than develops characters and events in order to draw the reader to understandings of his or her own; AND if you find some charm in the author's self-promotion within the pages of his own novel by, first, having a Cans' character mention one of his [Saunders'] previously published books as one of her favorites (irrespective of the incongruity of the time frames) and, second, by actually giving one of the Cans' minor characters his own [the author's] full name...THEN this may be the book for you.
While this is the author's fourth novel, it is the first of his that I have read. Because of bad editing and proofreading--unlike anything that I've ever before seen--I intended to send a shame-on-you letter to the publisher. However, in Googling, I learned that this is a self-publishing/printing operation--that is, one in which the author himself pays for the process, and that includes, it seems, options in levels of editing and proofreading. Therefore, I didn't bother. At the very least, a refresher English 101 course and the use of a good proofreader would have been helpful.
I am astonished at the four and five-star ratings found on this customer review site.
I haven't found a book this engaging in a long time!.......2007-08-05
I was mesmerized by this book. I read it in two sittings. I was so absorbed in the story I felt like I was standing with Zoie, Birdie, Nat and Jerry. When I got to the end I wanted more, and I wanted to turn the last page and see what else was going to happen to these exciting characters. I haven't found a book this engaging in a long time. I was moved to tears several times and had to remind myself that I was reading a book. It definitely is a powerful story that will stay in your mind long after you are finished. A wonderful novel by an author that you will definitely remember. I plan to buy the author's Tommytown before the day is finished. I would recommend Gathering of Cans to anyone.
Definitely worth Reading!.......2007-07-27
Robert Saunders has written a sweeping, emotionally powerful story that provides the reader with a most telling window into life of Zoie Baker over the past 40 odd years. It's also a moving story of friendship between brothers and sisters, sacrifice and heartfelt love between a husband and wife. Saunders is an amazing writer and "Gathering of Cans" rivals his thrilling mystery "The Monopoly Factor". I literally read this book cover to cover all 530 pages in 2 days. This is one of those books you don't want to see end as you've completely bonded with the characters and once the book is closed, you're no longer in their lives or they in yours. As much as I loved his other books I actually loved this book more. Definitely worth reading.
A Top-Notched Story!.......2007-07-09
This book was recommended to me by someone. This was my first Robert Saunders book, and it was just wonderful! I have now found my new favorite author. The story is very honest, and he mixes in romance that makes me smile and a bit of mystery that keeps me intrigued. It is easy to get into the story and with each of his characters I could visualize them very easily in the story and relate to them and what they are going through. Their relationships especially Zoie and Nat's, are believable and touching.
Mr. Saunders's story telling ability is his strong point. He creates characters that you care about and I eagerly turned the pages to find out what would happen to each of them.
I'll be reading his book The Monopoly Factor next, then I'll move onto his Tommytown series which I understand relates to the authors childhood.
In summary this is a super, precious novel. One of the best stories I have read in a long time. I highly urge you to check it out.

Yukky Old Descriptive notation despite recent publication.......2005-04-23
I returned it right away. If you don't mind the old descriptive notation feel free to check it out.
I thought anything with a 1997 publication date would surely use algebraic notation, but I got fooled.
For those that wonder: What is descriptive notation? P-K4 means White's pawn to e4 and P-K4 also means Black's pawn to e5. Same notation for two different moves...
Listen to Capablanca. Learn endgames by reading this book.......2002-09-03
In order to be a strong tournament player, it is crucial to improve your tactical ability and have strong endgame technique.
Jeno Ban's _Tactics of Endgames_ will help you accomplish both.
Just a few of the things you will get out of it:
1) A strong desire to improve your endgame technique. The positions in the book look simple, but once you see the subtle (and beautiful) solutions, you can't help but see the complexity in the game of chess. This will force you to look more carefully when you start to play. You will even enjoy studying the endgame, which is usually thought of as tedious and dull.
2) Improved ability to spot tactics. Because the positions are relatively simple, basic maneuvers like forks, skewers, pins, etc. will stick out in your mind. Your standard of play will improve, and you will make fewer blunders, and will be able to calculate farther ahead.
I noticed studying a few chapters improved my game very rapidly.
3) Improved defensive skills--you will begin to learn how even the most hopeless position can contain elements of poison for the superior side. Good defensive skill will make you extremely tough to beat.
Tactics of Endgames is a steal. Get the book and enjoy trouncing your opponents in the opening, middle, or endgame.
Outstanding Endgame Studies.......2002-02-22
Endgame studies unearth a whole new dimension of chess, but they're far from easy and some don't seem to be relevent to over the board play. That's where this book shines, since it has assembled studies that embody themes that are useful to the chess player. An exciting book. I'm a big fan of Dover Chess books in general because they're about a third the price of the over-priced books from Batsford, Thinker's Press, and Gambit (although many of the Gambit books are well-worth the money). As the other reviewer mentioned, the diagrams are pretty ugly and the text is in descriptive, but if you can play chess I'm sure you're smart enough to figure out descriptive :) Batsford's Endgame Magic is another great book of endgame studies in algebraic notation, so buy both because they're fun.
A real treasure.......1999-10-08
Ban takes an unusual apporoach. He classifies tactical themes, and uses mostly composed studies to illustrate each point. Endgames DO have some special tactics and you see them here. As an introduction to composed studies or as a more practiacl book this is very fine.
The drawbacks are the UGLY diagrams and the English notation. But this is a seriously good book.

Handy Little Primer for Modern and Near Future RPGs.......2006-11-11
This book is written in the style of a training manual from a private security corporation or organization (PSO). The private security company in the game forms the parent or patron group under which player characters (PCs) operate. The game in question is Millennium's End from Chameleon Eclectic and is a traditional pen-and-paper or tabletop role playing game (RPG).
In some ways this game was ahead of its time in predicting the rise of PSOs in the 21st century. Many of us have read about groups like Blackwater based out of Atlanta, Georgia, USA which provides bodyguards to the US Department of State in Iraq.
The designer of this fictional game world, and fictional company produced this real book to help fictional PCs who are new recruits and experienced operatives of the Blackeagle/Blackeagle Company handle themselves in a variety of circumstances.
The original package came with the main training manual, an employee handbook, and a fictional employee newsletter.
The newsletter is actually amusing with both intramural volleyball league scores and reports about operative cells being attacked overseas by a fictional Islamic terrorist organization. It offers a `slice-of-life' sample of what the RPG world was like for the PCs. It seems aimed at both the game referee or game master (GM) and the players to help them get in character.
The employee handbook is actually similar to what you would receive at any modern company, with health care, life insurance, education and other details of what any employee would need to know. Again, this seems aimed at build the game world as a real place, against which the larger than life adventures of the PCs take place. These two parts of the packet, the newsletter and benefits book, help add depth to the game and make it seem more real. This tends to also make the game `gritty' and more realistic.
The meat of the set, and any purchase you make should be the complete set, is the actual operations handbook.
It has sections on investigations, records searches, building a legal case, tailing suspects, setting up safe houses, interrogations, raids, urban combat, rural combat, tactical movement, and other tidbits of action and adventure in an easily digestible format. The interior art is simple black and white diagrams of key portions of the primary text. The art is usually showing a key example from the text. The margins are very wide, so the book may seem a little thin, but my suspicion is it was designed to allow margin notes by actual users (in real life or in the fictional universe).
None of the tactics or skills shown is secret. This is NOT a terrorist training manual; rather, it would be right at home alongside any of Tom Clancy's non-fiction books on the various service branches of the US Military. There are also a number of other non-fiction sources out there for much less than the above quoted price of US$191.00 (as of November 2006). However, this does have the advantage of simplicity and being on a number of different topics more in line with the typical PC group in an RPG.
The author of this book has gone on to work for Wizards of the Coast on the D20 Modern line, and his style and thoroughness have remained consistent in those products as well.
