Illustrations worth the price alone.......2007-03-14
This is an overview of British horror films. Yet the subject is much wider than just horror; that is unless you consider "The Giant Behemoth" and "Fire Maidens From Outer Space" horror. In all there are approximately 400 films (an eight page Filmography) mentioned in this book.
It is well organized in like subject matter with several sections on Hammer films. It even comes with a warning that there is adult material; this is probably due to body and body parts being uncovered.
This is not just another pretty picture book as Andy Boot goes into many descriptive comparisons that go beyond the juicy facts.
Book Description
"Splendid monograph, the first of major proportions in nearly thirty years
.ever thoughtful, opening the door to Friedrich's world that much wider."Chicago Tribune
Werner Hofmann vividly demonstrates Caspar David Friedrich's extraordinary ability to reproduce the natural world in faithful detail, while at the same time imbuing it with spiritual and religious significance. Caught between the near and the distant, the finite and the infinite, his human figures find a space in which to engage in the thoughtful contemplation of nature and the divine.
Carefully placing the artist in a wider context, Hofmann examines contemporary judgments and influences on Friedrich's work. The beautiful illustrations include many of Friedrich's drawings and watercolors as well as over ninety of his works in oils. 193 illustrations, 150 in color.

I agree with "A reader": This book is sublime........2006-06-17
This should be considered indispensable to anyone interested in this artist, Romanticism, or landscape painting in general. As well as offering a carefully considered account of the artist's life and work, the text is careful to separate the myths that have grown around some of these paintings, carefully placing the artist within the context of his own time and covering the manner in which these images have been misappropriated up to the present day.
Above all, this is the most thorough and best-reproduced representation of this artist's work I have seen to date, containing not only every single painting I have seen from other studies of the artist, but also several I encountered here for the first time. I doubt this will be equalled (let alone surpassed) for many years to come.
Sublime.......2001-04-24
Werner Hofmann's new monograph on Caspar David Friedrich benefits from superb colour reproductions as well as Hofmann's own discursive brilliance.
Selections from Friedrich's letters are a neat fit, bowing to the idea that his transcendental painting ultimately eludes scholarly discourse.
This book lands with authority, passion, and a keen sense of the vistas of silence that Friedrich communicates to admirers everywhere.
A bargain. Snap it up if you come across it...

Book Description
An inspired yet haunted genius, Caspar David Friedrich captures the solitude of man, powerless in the mystery and bleakness of nature. Find out how this great 19th-century Romantic painter created works of intense beauty in the face of personal tragedy. The DK ArtBook series presents both the life and works of each artist within the cultural, social, and political context of their time. To make the books easy to consult, they are divided into three areas -- the life and works of the artist, historical and cultural background, and analysis of major works -- which are identifiable by side bands. Each spread focuses on a specific theme, with an introductory text and several annotated illustrations. Few art history texts contain such abundance of full-color illustrations. The index section is also illustrated and gives background information on key figures and the location of the artist's works.

A Portrait of the Invisible.......2001-09-03
Koerner has written a philosophical masterpiece in the form of an art book. Caspar David Friedrich is one of the most complex and thought-provoking of nineteenth-century artists, whose whose exploration of perception shows up in his most mundane paintings as well as his most grandiose.
Koerner shows us how even a painting of something as simple as a bushy thicket in the snow contains many subtle contradictions and complexities that baffle the eye as we examine it more closely. The apparent simplicity and underlying intensity of many of his works is similar to that of Edward Hopper, on whom he seems to have been a major influence (and this book bears comparison with Kranzfelder's "Hopper").
Friedrich specialized in painting the human figure seen from behind (rueckenfigur), and this ties in with sense of nostalgia that is a major component of his art. A really notable example of this is "Abbey Graveyard under Snow", a painting of a ruined mediaeval monastery with a spectral procession of monks from a bygone age; this painting was destroyed by bombing in 1945 and exists only in reproduction - a ghostly painting of ghosts.
Koerner's dense prose is heavy going, but well worth the effort because it contains so much; the author evidently has a thorough grounding in philosophy as well as a great sympathy for his subject.
The last chapter is entitled "deja vu", and this sums up one of the main feelings aroused by this art. The last sentence is worth quoting:
"And it arrests you on the Dresden heath, before the thicket in winter, when what you thought were just alders in the snow are fragments of your darkest history".
Book Description
They are eighteen of the most highly decorated soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines in the United States military, yet most Americans dont even know their names. In this riveting account, former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Wynton C. Hall retell the stories of jaw-dropping heroism and hope coming out of Afghanistan and Iraq. Based on candid personal interviews, Home of the Brave takes readers beyond the bullets and battles into the hearts and minds of the men and women who are fighting terrorists overseas. These are the true-life stories of soldiers who risked everything to save lives and defend freedom. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Mitchell, the Green Beret leader whose fifteen-man Special Forces team took five hundred al Qaeda and Taliban prisoners, and posthumously repatriated the body of the first American to die in combat in the War on Terror, CIA Agent Johnny Mike Spann Army National Guard Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester, the first woman ever to be awarded the Silver Star for combat, whose sharp shooting and bravery played an enormous role in fighting off over fifty Iraqi insurgents while her ten-person squad protected a convoy of supplies on their way to fellow soldiers. Sergeant Rafael Peralta, a Mexican immigrant who enlisted in the Marines the same day he received his green card, and while wounded from enemy fire, used his body to smother the blast of an enemy grenade and gave his life so that his marine brothers could live Giving an in-depth and personal touch to the War on Terror, these real-life heroes remind us of American historys most enduring lesson: Ours would not be the land of the free were it not also the home of the brave.

It's About Time..........2007-03-25
...that someone brought attention to the great valor and bravery of our troops fighting the global war on terror, since the main-stream media seems to be doing everything in their power to minimize the troops' effect on the American (and world) conscience. I wish we could all thank the late Sec. Weinberger for undertaking this project. Although the writing is a little weak at points, the stories themselves, underlining the great bravery and sacrifice of our young men and women, more than make up for any deficiencies in that area. Please read this book, and continue to support our troops!
A great book and a must read.......2006-08-20
This is a moving account of the bravery and heroism that occurs daily by the men and women who have volunteered to defend us.
It gives a true and detailed account of the reality of battle and the reality that there are courageous soldiers that need our support and deserve our recognition, regardless of one's political opinions.
A Book that Deserves Reading.......2006-08-14
As I listen to, watch, or read the national media it seems that the only thing they really want to focus on is how many soldiers got killed today. They I read the letters and they are filled with nothing but hatred towards Bush. They offer no solutions just say it's all his fault. Only once in a while do we see something that talks about supporting our troops. Our troops didn't ask to be sent over there, but they are do a great job for our country. It's nice to see that once in a great while a book like this comes along that actually does report on what our troops are doing.
Specifically this is a report on the actions of nineteen of our finest soldiers. Their stories rival those of any of the heros of World War II, yet I've seen nothing about them in the news.
I've got to make two specific comments:
Our local politicians are making a lot of noise about immigration from Mexico, illegal or otherwise. Sgt. Peralta, a Mexican immigrant, wounded from enemy fire threw his body on top of an enemy grenade so that his marine brothers could live.
As the press reminds us daily, we've had about 2,500 killed in three years of fighting. That's about what we kill every three weeks on the highways. Why aren't the liberals, the media, congress, and everyone else concerned about safer cars, safer highways?
A book that deserves reading.
A Title for all Americans to read!.......2006-07-06
Incredible, spine tingling, heartwrenching accounts of extraordinary Americans put in extraordinary situations. Once you start this read, you won't be able to put it down. I've shared my book with several people now and they all have had the same reaction I had. You can't help but be overwhelmed with awe and pride in our country and its military when you read this book. It is un-american for the media in our country to not share these stories with the public. We all have the right to know what sacrifices are being made on our behalf. Thanks to Caspar Weinberger for his patriotism and his insight in bringing these stories out.
What it Means to Be an American.......2006-07-06
This was one of the best books I have ever read about the True Heroes of Our Country. It should be required reading at every High School and College in the country. I would also include the media but I doubt it would do any good.
Book Description
Debating Globalization is a short, accessible introduction to the debate about globalization written by many of the most prominent figures in the field. Published by Polity in association with openDemocracy, the book is notable not just for focusing on the pressing difficulties facing our world, but also on solutions. Rich and positive suggestions are made for reshaping globalization into a force that will work for humans everywhere. In an extended analysis, David Held provides a robust critique of the present order and sets out his alternative vision. Building on arguments he made in Global Covenant, he calls for a new global political agenda, informed by social democratic political values. His analysis has been criticized by leading figures and their responses follow in this book. There are chapters by, among others, Martin Wolf, Roger Scruton, Grahame Thompson, David Mepham, Meghnad Desai, Maria Livanos Cattaui, Patrick Bond, Benjamin Barber, John Elkington, Takashi Inoguchi, Narcís Serra, and Anne-Marie Slaughter and Thomas N. Hale. The volume ends with David Held's reply to his critics. The book provides a fascinating introduction to the debate about globalization today.
Book Description
This catalogue of an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum--to be held from October 10, 2006, to March 25, 2007--brings together a select group of paintings from Dresden's Galerie Neue Meister, which houses one of the most significant collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century German
art. This exhibition places at its core works from the two best-known painters from Dresden: Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a key voice of German Romanticism; and Gerhard Richter (b. 1932), the most celebrated German artist working today.
The catalogue, one of the few resources in English on the subject, will feature paintings by Carl Gustav Carus, J. C. Dahl, Otto Dix, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff from the period between 1800 and World War I, the heyday of painting in Dresden. It will also introduce unfamiliar artists to a wider
audience and juxtapose well-known painters in new ways. Included are essays on the history of the Neue Meister galleries and German painting from this period, entries on individual paintings, and an interview with Gerhard Richter.

Great coaching and feedback reference manual.......2005-04-02
For your improvement has been so helpful in my daily coaching and managing duties. I find that I use for many situations on a weekly basis. It has helped me pin point problems and decide on a strategy to develop my employees. There is so much information available to you for everyday coaching and feedback situations. It is just amazing how it covers the competencies that my company is measuring and so much more.
One of the best tools available for developing people.......2004-10-12
The FYI book is published by the Lominger Limited, Inc, organization as part of their "Leadership Architect Suite". If you are purchasing here on Amazon, please ensure you get the latest 3rd edition. Basically the book outlines over 100 leadership competencies, career stallers, and performance dimensions, and specific information on each to help leaders improve performance.
The competencies section is filled with some insightful leadership aspects that often get left out of most leadership books including: Humor, Dealing with Ambiguity, Approachability, Composure, Caring About Direct Reports, Dealing with Paradox, Sizing up People, and others which are essentially the more difficult "EQ" elements of leadership. Along with these are more traditional concepts such as Business Acumen, Planning, Time Management, etc., and all told nearly 70 specific competencies are discussed in detail.
Each of the over 100 competency and other sections outlined begins with an examination and list of likely symptoms and behavioral results that may occur with an individual who is skilled, unskilled, or is overusing the skill. Each section then lays out some possible causes, and gives some remedies which are pretty detailed and actionable, and provides a comprehensive list of suggested readings for further study.
Not only is this information quite interesting to study from a personal development standpoint, but is quite effective at outlining information critical to building development plans for your associates. I have given this book out to my team, and business leaders for years, and consider it the best tool out there to help any leader coach their associates and help them improve their performance and effectiveness.
While the price of the book is high, the value is higher still if used consistently. If you are a leader of people in any organization who wants to improve your ability to develop your employees then this is a book you will use. Highly recommended.
