Tennessee and the Angel.......2000-07-02
I love this book. It is a collection of letters primarily from Tennessee Williams to Maria St. Just. Maria and Tenn (as he is known to close friends) have a long-standing friendship and close connection. Only a few letters of Maria to Tennessee survive but Tennessee's letters reveal an intimate portrait of Tennessee's world, family, loves and life.
I felt I was a part of this wonderful world of Tenn in Florida, Tenn and his mother & sister, Tenn in Italy and London, Tenn and his companion, Frank ("the Horse") and all that makes up Tennessee's talented world.
Maria St. Just has provided her insights and notes about the letters.
I wish this book was still in print! I would love a copy for my personal delectation and collection -- for the letters are DELICIOUS.

He shares his views on the wrestling business today, and why his retirements do not stick.
Customer Reviews:
Funk vs Flair...Funk wins this match. .......2007-07-03
I read Ric Flair's book and really enjoyed it. A lot of people do not like it. I took it at face value...its Ric Flair's book...HELLO. He can write what he wants and he can/does glorify himself because its HIS BOOK. I had the feeling the story was a little onsided I know he wasn't an angel or a saint in the polictical world of wrasslin nor was he the victim in every circumstance that didn't go his way. He took time to slam folks like Bret and Foley for really no reason besides personal dislike and if you didn't know its his book. That part I didn't like but many deserving people got slammed like Jim Herd and Eric Bischoff. Slam them not Foley and Bret. But he credited a lot of good people as well.
ANYWAYS
Then I picked up the Funkers book. Totally different vibe. He tells an honest story from beginning until what I am sure is the very end of it. i have about 20 to 30 pages left. Outstanding read. He goes over many people and situations positive and negative and he credits the good people and situations while not passing the blame on others and making excuses. He probably is hard on one person himself when needed. Every bad situation wasn't a screw job. Also not as many politics in his book.
These are two different people totally. Jet Planes vs Horses , Limos vs Pintos. Who is the real life horsemen ?
I would like to go party with Ric Flair but I would want to learn the business from Terry Funk. This is a great book from a true legend.
LEGEND.......2007-05-09
Great book by one the all-time best.A must read for any true oldschool fan.
Excellent and insightful.......2007-04-16
Terry is pretty much uncensored and tells all about his life - this is a very good book. I never knew Terry thought Goldust was one of the best gimmicks WWF ever did - I must say I agree with him!
Worth Every Penny!!!.......2007-03-19
I picked up this book because of how Mick Foley has talked up Terry Funk in his previous two books (Have A Nice Day & Foley Is Good). I've become somewhat of a late Terry Funk fan thanks to Mick Foley. I've missed out on some of Terry's best days and best matches (notice to WWE - get moving on a Terry Funk dvd!) so I must admit to being weary heading into reading this book.
I was very pleasantly surprised. I was informed and more importantly, entertained by Terry Funk. He's a lot smarter than his wrestling personality leads you to believe. Also, like his protege Mick Foley, his morals show through in an industry known for a lack of morals at best. In one of the earlier chapters I was waiting in a car while shopping was being done and decided to read more of the book to pass the time. There was a funny part of the book that literally made me laugh out loud! Funk is funny as hell when he wants to be and there is a good amount of humor in this book.
I must admit there were things in the book that either went over my head or was about people/things I did not know about. For the most part, Terry did well to explain things a person like me (someone who didn't follow his career before recent years) could understand. Also, we got to hear his side of the friendship between him and Foley. I'd almost be willing to say this book should be recommended even if you aren't a wrestling fan. Like Foley's book it goes beyond the wrestler and brings you insight into the MAN himself. I am completely glad I bought this book. It took me away from the real world and my real life problems. I was absorbed by a man who loves wrestling, but loves his family even more. High praise to Terry Funk & co-writer Scott Williams!
P.S. - Special thanks to Mick Foley for talking so nicely about Funk in his books that he made me interested in Funk to buy this book and start following Terry's wrestling career.
Terry Funk: More Than Just Hardcore.......2007-01-24
This is the best book on professional wrestling since Ric Flair's. I first was introduced to Funk in the early 1970's while in the Air Force (Albuquerque, NM). He takes you behind the scenes with his great sense of humor and gives prospectives on both heels and baby faces. You'll love his stories! This is a must for the old school! Younger fans will learn the price that was paid for today's wrestling stars. Thanks Terry Funk for the years of entertainment and a good read!

Book Description
In his last years, America's leading playwright,Tennessee Williams, often threatened to publish a 'black book' describing the darker side of show business as he experienced it. Knowing he would not have time to complete it in his lifetime, he asked author Bruce Smith to write his personal memoirs of his years as Mr. Williams media and personal manager. That book is COSTLY PERFORMANCES/ Tennessee Williams: The Last Stage. It is now scheduled as a major motion picture release in 2005, starring Derek Jacobi as Tennessee Williams and Kevin Anderson as the author.
Customer Reviews:
The Kindness of a Stranger...Who Became a Friend.......2007-02-06
What is most striking about this book is its lack of sentimentality and incisive, sharp language. There has, indeed, been much written about Tennessee Williams, perhaps too much; the endless nonsense of his being a self-hating homosexual, the lurid tales of his promiscuity, the alleged Oedipal complexes, the temper tantrums and paranoia, and other such twaddle have all obfuscated many essential things about the genius who was Tennessee Williams. This excellent book stands out because it reminds us of Mr. Williams' power -as a person and a playwright- and at the same time it is not sycophantic nor is it cleverly bitchy. Smith, the author, meets Williams rather by accident and the unlikely friendship blossoms. I found the writing to be rather enthralling, evocative, and extremely well-crafted, which allows it to stand apart from many of the other (lesser) books on Williams. It is a memoir and does not purport to be anything but that, which allows the reader a keen insight into the life and work and humanity of the great Tennessee Williams. Because it is told from Smith's eyes the recounting of these stories is deeply personal and often effervescent with images and ideas; a far cry from the mawkish, self-consumed memoirs that pass as literature these days. I also liked the fact that Smith names some names and makes clear the case that the critics, PR people, and the various 'powers that be' in the theater and film worlds (i.e. agents, lawyers, producers) all played their part in Williams' miserable and protracted demise as much as the alcohol and pills did. And while Smith does not exculpate Williams from his vices he carefully explains why, he in fact, had them, and elucidates the nefarious forces constantly in conflict with the artist and his creative process.
Make no mistake this is Mr. Smith's story of his friendship with Tennessee, and thank goodness for its uniqueness, honesty, and edge. I think to truly appreciate this book one has to be familiar with serious writing (Eliot, Shaw) and not the Pop pap that sadly passes for publishable literature today. COSTLY PERFORMANCES and its author are both class acts and any writer or artist or person with a soul or fan of Tennessee Williams will love this book.
PS
The comment about grammatical errors is totally wrong and unfounded. And the Braun woman; who is she? "The author needed distance"? If she works in a library, how does she not know what a memoir is, and what the first person POV narrative offers the reader? These types of hit jobs are precisely the type of aforementioned `nefarious forces' to which I referred.
This is a valuable theatrical memoir.......2003-11-12
I am a young actor living in London where the plays of Tennesssee Williams are experiencing a great deal of interest within the entire theatre community: schools and universities; theatre companies; theatre media. All fans of his work are turning to background material on Williams and one of the most discussed -- and admired -- is Costly Performances/Tennessee Williams: The Last Stage by Bruce Smith. Mr Smith has, since writing this memoir, become actively involved in London's theatre world, saying he learned "at the master's hand" many enduring and valuable lessons re dramaturgy, play production and, more importantly, playwriting. His play 'Papal Gore' is scheduled for a West End staging. As well, his book about Mr. Williams is now being made into a major motion picture here in England. Real theatre people understand the sensitivity Mr. Smith brought to his portrayal of Mr Williams in his last, very difficult years and value it as a real contribution to 20th Century theatre history. It is highly literate but -- above all -- a very good read. This book, with Lyle Leverich's
The Unknown Tennessee Williams and the gossipy The Kindness of Strangers by Donald Spoto provide an indepth look at the author's life and times.

Book Description
Two pioneer balloonists, Tom Gatch in 1974 and Larry Newman in the early 1990s, led widely reported stratospheric expeditions that nearly earned them a place in aviation history. They both used pressurized balloons, a dangerous and sophisticated type of aircraft, and sought the swift wind of the jet stream to carry them forward.
In the first story, a determined, self-financed and self-reliant Tom Gatch in his Light Heart tries to become the first man to conquer the Atlantic Ocean alone by balloon. Ascending under a 10-balloon cluster, he makes it halfway across before disappearing, and the Department of Defense mounts a massive but futile mid-ocean search. What happened to him? Why did he do it?
In the second story, Larry Newman leads an international crew in Earthwinds, the most expensive and heavily marketed balloon expedition ever undertaken, attempting to become the first to fly around the world non-stop. He often said that his 354-foot tall aircraft was more complicated to fly than the Space Shuttle. He makes three ascents, each with a different crew.
With amusing, anguishing and astonishing frankness, the aeronautical adventures of Light Heart and Earthwinds are presented for the first time from a true insiderÂ's perspective.
Customer Reviews:
2 amazing stories.......2005-04-10
I just finished reading the book. The two stories presented are amazing. I'd really like to know more about the technical details of both projects, but none the less, the book is an engrossing page turner. The stories of the Earthwinds are particularly amazing.... could the program really keep continuing with the utterly amazing amount of drama therein? The book presents an amazing contrast of big project versus small project. Recommended reading!
Just Wind, two tales about pioneers in aeronautics........2003-09-22
I have knowledge about both of the stories in this book. I can tell you that both of these stories are really true and that alone makes it better than any fiction. It is amazing how this author was able to retain all of that detail and then narrate it so interestingly.
New York Times, Akron Beacon Journal, and Buoyant Flight.......2003-08-27
THE NEW YORK TIMES
In the quest for ultimate achievement--the scaling of the highest peak or a descent to the deepest ocean trench, for example--even heroic efforts often fall short of victory. The losers, alas, usually end up as forgotten footnotes to history.
But monumental failures can be as fascinating as successes. Although Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay went into the record books in 1953 as the first climbers to conquer Mount Everest, climbing fans will forever remember an earlier failure: the fatal attempt on Everest's summit in 1924 by George Leigh Mallory, who disappeared a few hundred yards short of the mountain's mist-shrouded peak.
Bill Armstrong's Just Wind brilliantly chronicles two of ballooning's magnificent failures--the ill-fated 1974 attempt by Col. Tom Gatch to be the first balloonist to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and the struggle by Larry Newman and his Earthwinds balloon team two decades later to circle the earth non-stop.
As a long-duration balloon pilot himself, Mr. Armstrong was a close friend of Col. Gatch. He also served as spokesman for the Earthwinds group, and his insider's perspective endows this book with rare technical details and insights into the sometimes bitter human conflicts that often characterize big-league ballooning.
For any reader awakened to the heady thrill of long-distance ballooning, this book is a must.
-- Malcolm W. Browne, The New York Times
AKRON BEACON JOURNAL
Bill Armstrong provides a compelling look from the inside at the dreams and efforts of two men to expand the world of ballooning.
His book is the definitive and detailed inside story of two aerial expeditions and the men and women behind those dreams. It is a book for those who care about expanding aerial frontiers and humans working to overcome challenges.
-- Bob Downing, Akron Beacon Journal
BUOYANT FLIGHT
(THE LIGHTER THAN AIR SOCIETY BULLETIN)
As an experienced balloonist himself, Bill Armstrong brings unique credentials to the telling of these sagas. He successfully combines a strong factual account of events with his personal observations on the motives and methods of those who sought to make ballooning history. JUST WIND fills an important gap in the chronicle of balloon history in America, and I highly recommend it.
-- Eric Brothers, editor, Buoyant Flight
Nice Try.......2003-08-23
I knew Tom Gatch. As a member of the Balloon Club of Amrerica, I helped train Tom to fly. His death was and is a tremendous loss to all of us who knew him. As interesting a book as Just Wind is, the speculations left me a little perplexed. Since Tom was not in contact with us for most of the flight it is impossible to describe what he was doing unless you are just trying to tell a story. I had high hopes about reading the book and was a bit disappointed.
I also believe that there was technical details left out of the book which might have explained his predicament a bit better. All in all, however, it is good to have some documentation about Tom's attempt. I am happy to have the book on my shelf. It is too bad that more isn't known about the flight itself. Now if someone wants to write about Bob Burger you might have an even more sorrowful tale.

Book Description
Just One covers the life of Bill Roble as he tries to learn why one name on the Vietnam Memorial Wall, that of his brother, Joseph Edward Roble, meant so much to so many. Throughout his younger years and into adulthood, Bill was influenced by correspondence his late brother sent while a Marine in Vietnam, as well as comments from his brotherÂ's friends and relatives.
This influence led to an enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps, and later a meeting with many of his brotherÂ's comrades in arms all of which culminated in an attempt to retrace his brotherÂ's footsteps to Vietnam. Bill attempts to show how the loss of just one man in one war can impact many lives. Just One attempts to give the reader a new perspective on the ideals of the men and women that fought in Vietnam, as well as show how their lives impact some of us even today.

Book Description
This annotated chronology of western music from 313-1425 is the first in a series of outlines covering the history of music in western civilization. The present volume covers the background, philosophy, theory, notation, style, and forms or classes of music of the periods stated and also the works of theorists or composers. Sources, facsimiles, and transcriptions of musical manuscripts and sources of treatises by musical theorists, in the original language and in English translation, are indicated where possible. The instruments of each historical period are listed and described. Musical terms are defined at the end of each chapter. Foreign words, parts of the liturgy of the Roman Catholic church, musical terms, titles of theoretical works and musical manuscripts, and names of composers, theorists, and places of interest are defined in the section entitled Definition and Pronunciation. This section also includes the translation and pronunciation of words in Classical and Ecclesiastical Latin, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Old English, and Old French. At the end of each section of the book are maps that show pertinent Empires and Kingdoms, and the areas of musical development and activity of each historical period. Appendices have been added in order to discuss notation and rhythm in greater depth and to divulge some different theories concerning the material found in the text. Supplemental sources for further study are found at the end of each historical period.

Customer Reviews:
Great B-school refresher.......2005-08-01
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a business school refresher b/c it thoroughly covers the all the topics. You'll find yourself saying "oh, yes, I remember that!"
The approach throughout the book is to highlight "the big questions" around each topic, then discuss them in detail. I've found this a great way to hit the just high points when I want to refresh myself and to have a more in-depth read when I want more.
It has become a great desk reference for me. A co-worker just finishing an MBA has also read it and found it a great complement to his MBA program.
While all the chapters are well-written and full of information, the chapter on macroeconomics was outstanding. I was surprised to learn in the book how few of the top business schools teach macroeconomics. Fortunately, the book covers it well.
Great book.
Still deciding.......2005-06-15
I just started reading this today.
It is hard for a non-MBA to review the book, being that my only understanding of what goes on in MBA halls is based on my friend's stories and the plethora of business books I've read.
However, I can say that the book covers most of the topics being discussed in classrooms today.
What I find most convinient is the ease with which the authors handle the business language. Furthermore, the book is tightly organized, starting out with a basic review of macro/micro economics.
I think even someone just looking for a basic understanding of business and economic phenomena will take away a lot from this book.
Very well organized........2005-05-10
This book is very well organized. There are some charts that may look confusing at first, but once you read through, it all comes together, and each element of the chart is clearly explained. I recommend you read this book, if you are looking to better strategize your firms objectives, or if you are building a company from scratch and would like a general guide.
