This excellent set of scores, published by Dover, brings Dover's consummate work at a reasonable price. The editors do a marvelous job of staying true to the original text from which their reprints are derived. The print is clear, and the staves are nice and distinct. (The only concern maybe that too much erasing could permanently wipe off the ink on the page.) Instruments are clearly labled and numberings of key pts. in the concerti help a lot. I highly recommend this book to any music enthusiast, and especially to all violinists who are playing, or will play, any of these great violin concerti.

Received it in a timely manner, a lot different from other theory books I've seen but looks like it'll be good in class. Haven't used it yet, but gives many, many musical examples with a few questions at the beginning of each section.

This book is organized by terms of harmonic content. The book is divided into three sections: Diatonic Materials, Chromatic Materials, and Twentieth Century Materials. It contains an analytic checklist and sample analysis that can be used as a guide to the student. An index of composers makes it easy to study the musical style of a particular composer. The excerpts can be played by any competant keyboard player. This book contains mostly excerpts, but a few sections that contain a complete piece or movement of a piece. The selections are not analyzed, which makes for fun practice at analyzing them yourself!

This anthology contains eighteen representative examples of the particular difficulties presented by twentieth-century scores, stimulating consideration of the relationship between what is seen (the score) and what is heard (the music). The emphasis in the period before 1945 is on major composers: Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Ives, Stravinsky, Bartok, Varese, Webern, and Messiaen. For the period after the Second World War the authors have chosen examples of what is new from a notational point of view in works by Cage, Boulez, Stockhausen, Penderecki, Riley, and Cardew.

Doing dot-to-dot puzzles helps develop fine motor skills and penmanship skills by providing practice for proper holding of pencil or marker and the action of drawing a straight line. Each puzzle goes from A to Z (which is wonderful and better than other books such as published by School Zone which have less number of dots and don't always go all the way to Z), so this also helps with learning the letter names and their sequence, always from A through to Z.
The paper is good quality white paper stock. The images are in black and white, so when the puzzle is complete, the child may color it in. The images are goofy and silly looking animals, some of which are wearing clothing.
Wonderful for preschool aged children! Dot to Dot books make great gifts for young children, especially children who seem to have enough toys!
This author also has a book in which all puzzles go from 1-100, which I recommend. If you are looking for dot-to-dots for older children, see the series "Greatest Dot to Dot Book in the World!". Description:
A flow cytometric detecting technology based on quantum dots (QDs)-encoded beads has been described. Using this technology, several QDs-encoded beads with different code were identified effectively, and the target molecule (DNA sequence) in solution was also detected accurately by coupling to its complementary sequence probed on QDs-encoded beads through DNA hybridization assay. The resolution of this technology for encoded beads is resulted from two longer wavelength fluorescence identification signals (yellow and red fluorescent signals of QDs), and the third shorter wavelength fluorescence signal (green reporting signal of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)) for the determination of reaction between probe and target. In experiment, because of QDs' unique optical character, only one excitation light source was needed to excite the QDs and probe dye FITC synchronously comparing with other flow cytometric assay technology. The results show that this technology has present excellent repeatability and good accuracy. It will become a promising multiple assay platform in various application fields after further improvement.

This paper explains market turbulence, such as the recent dot-com boom/bust cycle, as equilibrium industry dynamics driven by the synergy between new and existing technologies. When a major technological innovation arrives, a wave of new firms implement the innovation and enter the market. However, if the innovation complements existing technology, some new entrants later will be forced out as more and more incumbent firms succeed in adopting the innovation. It is argued that the diffusion of Internet technology among traditional brick-and-mortar firms was indeed the driving force behind the rise and fall of dot-coms as well as the sustained growth of e-commerce. Systematic empirical evidence from retail and banking industries supports the theoretical findings.

The photoluminescence of water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots is found to be temperature-dependent: as temperature arising from 280K to 351K, the photoluminescence declines with emission peak shifting towards the red at a rate of ~0.11nmK^-^1. And the studies show that the photoluminescence of water-soluble CdSe/ZnS quantum dots with core capped by a thinner ZnS shell is more sensitive to temperature than that of ones with core capped by a thicker one. That is, with 50% decrement of the quantum yield the temperature of the former need to arise from 280K to 295K, while the latter requires much higher temperature (315.6K), which means that the integrality of shell coverage is a very important factor on temperature-sensitivity to for the photoluminescence of water-soluble CdSe/ZnS quantum dots. Moreover, it is found that the water-soluble CdSe quantum dots with different core sizes, whose cores are capped by thicker ZnS shells, possess almost the same sensitivity to the temperature. All of the studies about photoluminescence temperature-dependence of water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots show an indispensable proof for their applications in life science.

The message is reasonable but overhyped........2003-01-22
This book exemplifies the business of the Harvard Business School. It draws snippets from many case studies (available for purchase separately), it ties into seminars and tailored sessions sold at fancy prices to industry, and it presents one of several competing but overlapping theories of what divides successful and unsuccessful companies. It is often compared with Clayton Christensen's book "The Innovator's Dilemma" (obliquely referenced in the preface, but not appearing in the index or bibliography), and indeed both deal with the question of how established companies deal with technologies (in the loosest sense) that change markets. Of the two, I vastly prefer Christensen's book because he tells coherent stories that reach conclusions. This book introduces situations without enough detail to get a true feel for what is going on. In one extreme case ("... John Torrance at Medtek ...", p. 61), a reference is introduced that has no antecedent. The authors of books in this genre like to name drop to show you how broad and deep is their knowledge; therefore you should regard their version of gospel as more credible than their rivals. (How about a case sometime on business school professors?) There are "figures" and "tables" which I suspect are PowerPoint pastes from their lectures. Some of them are referenced (weakly) in the text -- most of them have no direct connection to the exposition. In short, the book gives the impression of being slapped together in haste. For the most part, it is well edited -- a few punctuation lapses notwithstanding. But it needed more editing for content. The table on page 13 says that the "Winchester" company fell victim to its success in disk drives, but the term "Winchester disk" refers not to a company but the code name of a very succesful product prior to its announcement. (Cf. http://www.....htm among other similar web references.) On page 163 they say that IBM lost key control to Intel and Microsoft by betting on the wrong PC design. The conclusion is true, but has nothing whatever to do with the false premise. Now these are all throwaway lines in the book, but they undermine the credibility of the main argument. As an earlier reviewer here put it, the book is about five chapters too long, again, I suspect, because it was produced in haste in order to sell to HBS program participants and in order to get on to the next piece of work. For those who haven't been exposed to the basic ideas (e.g., culture matters), it may well be invaluable, but it ain't the one, true gospel.

I read many business books - from Drucker to Peters, etc., but this one is very insightful, practical, and easy to follow! One day I will own my own business and this book will be by my side!
Discontinuinity To Remain Competitive.......1998-04-20
Many successful companies continue to live onto their past success stories and forget the drastic changes taking place in the market. This symptom ultimately makes their successes short-lived and their market positioning easily challenged,and overtaken, by other not-so-famous competitors. To evade such perils, this book explains lucidly the idea of discontinuous innovations through which "culture of innovation" can be obtained and finally reach to an ambidextrous organization. Without innovation no organization can ever think of surviving in this cut-throat competitive market. The concepts in the books are easy to understand via appropriate examples and related explanation.
