Book Description
Since its original publication in 1987, Channels of Discourse has provided the most comprehensive consideration of commercial television, drawing on insights provided by the major strands of contemporary criticism: semiotics, narrative theory, reception theory, genre theory, ideological analysis, psychoanalysis, feminist criticism, and British cultural studies.
The second edition features a new introduction by Robert Allen that includes a discussion of the political economy of commercial television. Two new essays have been addedone an assessment of postmodernism and television, the other an analysis of convergence and divergence among the essaysand the original essays have been substantially revised and updated with an international audience in mind. Sixty-one new television stills illustrate the text.
Each essay lays out the general tenets of its particular approach, discusses television as an object of analysis within that critical framework, and provides extended examples of the types of analysis produced by that critical approach. Case studies range from Rescue 911 and Twin Peaks to soap operas, music videos, game shows, talk shows, and commericals.
Channels of Discourse, Reassembled suggests new ways of understanding relationships among television programs, between viewing pleasure and narrative structure, and between the world in front of the television set and that represented on the screen. The collection also addresses the qualities of popular television that traditional aesthetics and quantitative media research have failed to treat satisfactorily, including its seriality, mass production, and extraordinary popularity.
The contributors are Robert C. Allen, Jim Collins, Jane Feuer, John Fiske, Sandy Flitterman-Lewis, James Hay, E. Ann Kaplan, Sarah Kozloff, Ellen Seiter, and Mimi White.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview of Media Studies Methodologies.......2002-07-04
In a critical writing course I taught in Spring 2002, I used Channels of Discourse, Reassembled as the core text for the course readings. The many chapters within are written by the best of the best in the fields of media studies and cultural studies, and the methodologies are presented in an easy-to-read manner which is informative and full of examples and case studies. This is an excellent book for media studies students, as its chapters lay out the basic information they should know about many of the methodologies often used in media criticism.

Book Description
Drawing on a wide range of materials, including experimental movies, pop songs, photographs, and well-known poems and paintings,
Pop Modernism shows that experimental art in the early twentieth century was centrally concerned with the reinvention of everyday life. In a series of clearly written, provocative, and groundbreaking essays, Juan A. Suárez demonstrates how modernist writers and artists reworked pop images and sounds, old-fashioned and factory-made objects, city spaces, and the languages and styles of queers and ethnic “others.”
Pop Modernism examines the popular roots of modernism in the United States. Along the way, Suárez reinterprets many of modernism’s major figures and argues for the centrality of relatively marginal ones, such as Vachel Lindsay, Charles Henri Ford, Helen Levitt, and James Agee. Chapter discussions include Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler’s film
Manhatta (1921), exploring its debt to modernist film criticism and discourses on the popular; the work of surrealist Joseph Cornell as an exploration of “object automatism” (the latencies and histories buried in objects and mass cultural artifacts); and how the interest in the culture industry was gradually replaced, from the late 1930s onward, with a fascination with folk and amateur art.
Pop Modernism reconnects the modernist reinvention of everyday life and contemporary artistic practice. What is at stake is not just an antiquarian impulse to rescue forgotten past moments and works, but a desire to establish an archeology of our present art, culture, and activism.
Book Description
An examination of filmic and Internet representations of transgender from a post-modern perspective, as a phenomenon that challenges conventional demarcations of sexuality and gender on the one hand, while provoking an ambivalent mixture of fear and fascination on the other.

Book Description
The 1950s are widely regarded as the golden age of American science fiction. This book surveys a wide range of major science fiction novels and films from the long 1950s--the period from 1946 to 1964--when the tensions of the Cold War were at their peak. The American science fiction novels and films of this period clearly reflect Cold War anxieties and tensions through their focus on such themes as alien invasion and nuclear holocaust. In this sense, they resemble the observations of social and cultural critics during the same period. Meanwhile, American science fiction of the long 1950s also engages its historical and political contexts through an interrogation of phenomena, such as alienation and routinization, that can be seen as consequences of the development of American capitalism during this period. This economic trend is part of the rise of the global phenomenon that Marxist theorists have called "late capitalism." Thus, American science fiction during this period reflects the rise of late capitalism and participates in the beginnings of postmodernism, described by Frederic Jameson as the "cultural logic of late capitalism."

PEDRO ALMODOVAR (Contemporary Film Directors)

A Spanish Labyrinth: Films of Pedro Almodovar, The
ASIN: 0313292450 |
Book Description
The films of Pedro Almodovar have demonstrated great crossover appeal in their ability to attract both mainstream and marginal audiences and to command critical as well as commercial success. The contributors to this anthology of critical essays seek, through close readings of the director's 10 feature films, to analyze the multiple contexts of Almodovar's phenomenal international success. This volume offers a corrective to the glib approaches that have dominated previous discussions of Almodovar's films, which have treated them, on the one hand, as simply the latest contribution to the travel poster image of passionate, "romantic Spain," or, on the other, as historical joyrides through the global pop culture scene. As the first comprehensive study of Almodovar's cinema to be published in North America, the book is also noteworthy for the range of critical and theoretical methodologies that the contributors bring to the study of his works. Drawing upon disciplines that run from psychoanalysis, feminism, queer theory, film and media studies, and cultural theory to the empirical study of audience response, the authors nevertheless share a concern to illuminate the specifically Spanish context of the director's films. While this volume serves the important function of introducing American audiences to post-Franco Spanish culture, it also pursues the complementary goal of projecting contemporary Spain into the critical debate on the forms and functioning of postmodern culture and society.
Book Description
"A book well worth reading as its expose of postmoderism has a clarity others would do well to imitate." --Tim Gay in NATFHE Journal Blue Velvet, sex, lies and videotape, Do the Right Thing, and Wall Street are just some of the provocative films that Denzin explores for their portrayal of the postmodern self. He examines the basic thesis that members of the contemporary world are voyeurs who, adrift in a sea of symbols, recognize and anchor themselves through cinema and television. He skillfully weaves this idea back and forth between two kinds of texts: social theory, including poststructuralism, postmodernism, feminism, and marxism; and cinematic representations of life in modern America. The result is a solid assertion that postmodernism has shaped a dramaturgical society where the image has tragically replaced reality. Denzin offers a powerful reading of postmodern American society and the cinematic selves, however distorted, that inhabit this fantasy world. At the same time, he outlines the main contours of postmodern sociology and a postmodern sociological imagination that is responsive to the current historical moment. Images of Postmodern Society will play a key role in understanding the powerful relationship between postmodernism and the cinema for upper level graduates, gradate students, and contemporary scholars of cultural studies, communications, political science, anthropology, sociology, education, history, literary and cinema studies. "The book could be usefully incorporated into undergraduate sociology courses, particularly those that consider media and society, where it might serve as a basis for further discussion and examination of some important issues." --Journal of Communication "Images of Postmodern Society is a good book on two different levels. First, Denzin advances his own theory of postmodernism and, more specifically, of what he calls the "postmodern self," that is interesting and provocative. Second, this is one of the few books on postmodernity that is truly practical, in the sense that the book would be quite a good text to use in courses on the subject, whether they be in philosophy, sociology, film and media studies, cultural studies, and perhaps even anthropology. . . . I would certainly like to use the book for this purpose myself, and I would recommend the book for that purpose to colleagues in the departments mentioned." --Bill Martin, Philosophy Department, DePaul University "Denzin uncovers a profoundly important tension in postmodern culture . . . His work, then, demonstrates that the 'abundance of meaning' found in these films lies in the collision of modernist and postmodernist depictions of cultural practice." --Contemporary Sociology "Norman Denzin, one of the most interesting theorists and ethnographers in American sociology, has turned his critical eye to postmodern theory and contemporary American culture and society. Revitalizing Mills' sociological imagination, Denzin addresses the relations between Hollywood films of the 1980s, their constructions of self, and the structures of lived experience. He offers a postmodern sociology which addresses the increasingly conservative basis of postmodern ideologies of race, class, and gender. It offers an original postmodern critique of the postmodern. Images of Postmodern Society should be and will be widely read and discussed." --Larry Grossberg, University of Illinois

Book Description
Traveling from Warsaw to Blackpool, Marseilles to Madrid, this book investigates the postmodern nature of contemporary Europe's urban life and cinema, and shows how European films represent these cities across old and new Europe. Interdisciplinary in approach, the book engages with diverse films, including "Luna Park", "Run, Lola, Run", "Trainspotting", "Wonderland", and many more. It tackles the issues about postmodernity raised by these films and the changes wrought in European cities over the last two decades under the effects of political change, from the postcommunist era in Moscow and Berlin to the effects of Thatcherism in Edinburgh and London.

Customer Reviews:
Great coverage of the huge variety of poker games available.......2005-02-15
I got this book hoping to add a little spice into our home game. Many of the people I play with (and me) stick to Texas Hold 'em for the most part, but fondly remember the days when "Chase the Queen" and "Iron Cross" built huge pots and made a home game really different from what you get in the Casino. I was really impressed with the coverage this book provides. Pretty much every aspect of the home game is there, and there are more varieties of poker outlined here than we'll ever get to in our game - there's just not enough time!
The first sections of "Poker Night" discuss many of the things that need to be considered before hosting a game. What kind of atmosphere are you going for? What sort of house rules should you establish? How do you handle the player who wins a huge hand and then wants to leave right away? "Poker Night" helps you prepare a sound set of house rules to make sure the game runs smoothly.
The real meat of the book covers every variation of poker I've ever heard of and many more. The publisher's outline above will give you an idea of what's there, and each is covered very well. Essentially the rules of each type of poker are covered in brief, and then they give a thorough breakdown of how each variety of them work. So, in the Stud section they cover the classic "Chase the Queen", and in the Community section they cover my favorite, "Iron Cross", but if you've wanted to know how to play "Baseball", "H-Bomb", or too many others to mention, chances are they're in here.
The section on Hold'em provides a good overview of the game, and provides some good information about the value of the various starting hands, and the strategy included would be very helpful for people just getting into the game or who are interested in taking control of their current home game. The final section includes some interesting notes about how casino poker games like Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud can be adjusted for home game play.
Overall, a really good overview of the wide variety of poker games played in living rooms around the world. "Poker Night" will definitely add something to anyone's game that's gotten a little too predictable.

Customer Reviews:
A Gem.......2005-12-14
If you like cards, this book is a great choice. It lists several hundred card games in alphabetical order. These include both popular and obscure games from all over the world. Each entry offers clear, easy-to-understand rules for the game.
This is the 2nd edition of the book entitled "A Dictionary of Card Games" written in the early 1990s by the same author. Since I have a copy of the older edition, I wondered whether buying this new edition would be worth it. I can report that it definitely was. This updated edition adds some new international games, from countries such as China and Vietnam, that have not before been published in English.
As a card hobbyist, I've bought a dozen or so books on card games. One of the few as good as this is from the same author, entitled "Penguin Encyclopedia of Card Games." That book organizes games by type, whereas this one lists them alphabetically.
You can't go wrong by buying either book (or just get both!). May all your deals be happy.

Top.......2005-06-15
Find it and GET it. You will find deals and material not found elsewhere, and G.Coffin is -da- master of endplays!
Terminology will sound weird, but your game will improve a lot. Warning -> Advanced players only. Do not hope that you will understand anything if you are a beginner: Coffin has no mercy!
It really is an A to Z review on play.......2004-06-18
One of top books on play. Ranks with Master Play and Play of the Hand. Needs updating and editing, and would be a best seller again.
Fantastic book on play.......2000-12-21
If you ever get a chance to buy or borrow this book, do so. I would say that this is an intermediate text, but it covers everything from the basics to simple endplays and squeezes. This is a better and more comprehensive book on play of the cards than any other I've read. If you get a chance, pick up anything by George Coffin.

I'm Matthew Low, better known on both Pojo.com as the person who techs decks and stuff like that. I wrote one of the articles in this neat book; the Videl deck, dedicated to my sister.
This is one of the best things you can get if you want some tips starting out. Of course all card game books get outdated from time to time, but this one is all you need to catch up to right before Buu Saga. People like the almighty IQ and accomplished veterans like Zeller, Williams, and Fashbinder give their ideas. Most of the people included in this book (not all) are of the greatest there are in the game; take their advice.
It helps the person wanting to start out with a bunch of nothing, like the Cheap decks, to the tournament level ones like Richie's outdated Cell Namekian. More or less the decks are still good for the most part; make sure you swing by dbzcardgame.com and find any changes that have sprung up in the last few months.
If anything, read the articles. They are by far the most useful things you can read to help you in this game. The decks will get you started. After all, this is a beginner's book. If you are ready to go to the advanced/expert level, feel free to email me (go find my address in my article ^_^) for a deck tech or some tips.
So... I say get this book, especially if you need some help in the game of DBZCCG. It has a wealth of information you won't find ANYWHERE else. Get this. I said so.

It's about time!.......2003-06-17
It's about time someone created a book about the DBZ Card Game. This game has been around for years, and there's not too many places to get information.
This book is perfect for newbies, and people that are trying to get better. I think you World Champion type guys will enjoy it too, as you finally can read about your sport. ;-)
This book has History, Killer Decks, Top 10 Lists and more. My favorite part is the Top 20 Most Collectible Cards, as I like to collect the rare ones.
There's 96 pages ... and all of them are fun to read! Pick in up!

Great book no CD.......2007-03-17
The content of the book are good, practical and I plan to use it in setting up a PMO in my workplace.
Howevere, the book did not come with CD, Amazon shipped it again, without CD. Called up the publisher and was informed it was production issue. They are fixing it and will come up with an alternative arrangement in a short period.
Amazon needs to reflect this on their site. For those buying the book you might have to wait for the CD.
Ummmm... what was the author thinking?.......2007-03-03
I hate to say it, but I found this book to be terrible. It has a lot of "practical guidance" but it largely ignores focusing on the tactical and strategic aspects of a project management COE. I was looking for something that was more than a simple "nuts and bolts" guide. Simple nuts and bolts don't help to get business plans approved... My advice, pass over this one and find something that focuses at a high level as well as in the details.
A PMO Owners/User Manual......Great value for the $$$.......2006-01-25
In using the book "Building Project Management Centers of Excellence" I found an extremely valuable resource to use as a proven roadmap to creating a Project or Program Management Office. The book showed a strategy to establish a PMO, challenges that can come up as well as how to deal with them and expectations associated with the creation of a PMO. Also valuable were the CD of templates in the book. This book was used as a reference to help implement a PMO at an $8B US branch of the government. As challenging as a large rollout can be, this book helped with explaining what to do, when to do it and what to expect. A must have for anyone building or managing a PMO.

Good advice from real life experience.......2005-12-02
In my opinion Dennis did a great job with this book:
- he proved along he knows all the Project Management (PM) aspects from real life
- on CD, and in the book also, there are a lot of good templates, easy to adjust for other purposes. As he said in introductory part of the CD, they are "some basic tools and templates"
- the steps he figured out are perfect for the ones looking for a way to create Project Management Office (PMO)
If you are:
- a begginer worker in PM, or PMO, I can say this book is enough to give you an idea what to look for, what to do and what to learn in future to improve you skills
- an intermediate Project Manager, this book is great to consolidate your past expertise and to open new dimensions which helps you look into the future, plan your work in a professional way, double check your ideas/thoughts
- an expert Project Manager, do not expect this book will answer all you unanswered questions; it is an opinion, a very good one, tailored in such a way to be valid for a wide range of readers, with different expertise levels from various industries. The book is a good refference, information source and actionable tool.
Thank you Dennis.
Not deep enough for anyone really doing this.......2005-10-26
I was optimistic given everyone's positive comments and since I am, myself, in the process of designing a project management center of excellence, I took a risk and bought it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find it at my local bookstore to flip through it first and now I know why, nobody would buy it if they could see it first. The material is appropriate only at the most basic level of project management capabilities. If you've been at it for only a year or two, you might find it helpful, but if you are truly implementing one (as the title claims), you better already know all this stuff and a whole lot more. I wasted my money, don't waste yours. This is my first review and I don't usually write them but this purchase disappointed me.
