      Book Description

Carefully documenting the deceptions and excesses of television news coverage of the so-called cocaine epidemic, Cracked Coverage stands as a bold indictment of the backlash politics of the Reagan coalition and its implicit racism, the mercenary outlook of the drug control establishment, and the enterprising reporting of crusading journalism. Blending theoretical and empirical analyses, Jimmie L. Reeves and Richard Campbell explore how TV news not only interprets "reality" in ways that reflect prevailing ideologies, but is in many respects responsible for constructing that reality. Their examination of the complexity of television and its role in American social, cultural, and political conflict is focused specifically on the ways in which American television during the Reagan years helped stage and legitimate the "war on drugs," one of the great moral panics of the postwar era.
The authors persuasively argue, for example, that powder cocaine in the early Reagan years was understood and treated very differently on television and by the state than was crack cocaine, which was discovered by the news media in late 1985. In their critical analysis of 270 news stories broadcast between 1981 and 1988, Reeves and Campbell demonstrate a disturbing disparity between the earlier presentation of the middle- and upper-class "white" drug offender, for whom therapeutic recovery was an available option, and the subsequent news treatment of the inner-city "black" drug delinquent, often described as beyond rehabilitation and subject only to intensified strategies of law and order. Enlivened by provocative discussions of Nancy Reagan’s antidrug activism, the dramatic death of basketball star Len Bias, and the myth of the crack baby, the book argues that Reagan’s war on drugs was at heart a political spectacle that advanced the reactionary agenda of the New and Religious Right—an agenda that dismissed social problems grounded in economic devastation as individual moral problems that could simply be remedied by just saying "no."
Wide ranging and authoritative, Cracked Coverage: Television News, the Anti-Cocaine Crusade, and the Reagan Legacy is a truly interdisciplinary work that will attract readers across the humanities and social sciences in addition to students, scholars, journalists, and policy makers interested in the media and drug-related issues.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece of work........1999-03-19

Reeves and Campbell cut through all of the drug war crap in this superb cultural analysis. The role of the news -- especially the television network news -- is clear in the creation of a major "drug problem" and the need for a war on drugs. Need to know why the jails are overflowing with drug users? As this book points out, the Reagan-era news loved this "lock 'em up" story.

        Book Description

Internet TV is the quintessential digital convergence medium, linking television, telecommunications, the Internet, computer applications, games, and more. Soon, venturing beyond the convenience of viewer choice and control, Internet TV will enable and encourage new types of entertainment, education, and games that take advantage of the Internet's interactive capabilities. What Internet TV is today and can be in the future forms the context for this book.

Arising from collaboration between the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) and the European Institute for the Media (EIM), this volume investigates the advent of widely available individual broadband Internet communications and their impact on the development of Internet TV. Editors Eli Noam, Jo Groebel, and Darcy Gerbarg have collected seminal papers by leaders from the U.S. and European media and technology industries that offer a critical look at the impact of interactivity on television content, and address the need for media organizations to create interactive programming in this untapped realm with unclear consumer interest and desires.

Each section of the volume fleshes out key issues and concepts of television and the Internet:

*Part I, Infrastructure Implications of Internet TV, discusses questions about the required network capacity for various quality grades to deliver individualized broadband to homes.

*Part II, Network Business Models and Strategies, addresses the business challenges of making Internet TV a financial success.

*Part III, Policy, examines policy issues, including copyright and regulation.

*Part IV, Content and Culture, reviews available content, those creating it, and how consumers view Internet TV content.

*Part V, Future Impacts, considers future global prospects for Internet TV content creation and distribution.

Internet Television is an essential resource for professionals and scholars in new technology and media studies, media policy, telecommunication, broadcasting, and related areas. It is also appropriate for graduate seminars in telecommunications, media and new technologies, and broadcasting and the Internet.

For all that's been written in recent years about the Christian Coalition, Promise Keepers, and other conservative evangelical movements in the United States, perhaps the most important institution among them--James Dobson's enormously popular radio program Focus on the Family--has not received its due from secular observers. Paul Apostolidis hopes to change that with Stations of the Cross. This is an academic treatment, and the first chapter begins with a deadening line: "Marx famously concluded his Theses on Feuerbach by declaring..." Yet there's plenty of rich thought on these pages for readers interested in the Christian Right and willing to plow their way through some jargon.

In a useful introduction, Apostolidis describes Dobson's rise and appeal: he's not a Pat Robertson or Jimmy Swaggart-like figure, but a bestselling child psychologist who devotes much of his airtime to parenting advice rather than politics or sermonizing. In addition, his "almost complete avoidance of the medium of television has been instrumental to his image as the one conservative evangelical leader with class and a clear conscience." Apostolidis is certainly no fan of Dobson's--this is a left-wing critique, and at times an extremely negative one. Yet he strives for objectivity. Even when he's discussing something he clearly finds troubling--such as Dobson's views on "curing" homosexuals--he doesn't resort to a condescending tone of irreligious judgment. He does, however, suggest that Dobson's rhetoric of Christian compassion is out of step with a politics of rolling back the welfare state and battling racial preferences. And, interestingly, he proposes overcoming Christian conservatism not with secularism, but with a form of liberal religiosity. There's a more accessible book to be written on this subject, but the analysis in Stations of the Cross is original enough to make it worth reading, especially by followers of People for the American Way and similar organizations. --John J. Miller

          Book Description

Since the 1970s, American society has provided especially fertile ground for the growth of the Christian right and its influence on both political and cultural discourse. In Stations of the Cross political theorist Paul Apostolidis shows how a critical component of this movement’s popular culture—evangelical conservative radio—interacts with the current U.S. political economy. By examining in particular James Dobson’s enormously influential program, Focus on the Family—its messages, politics, and effects—Apostolidis reveals the complex nature of contemporary conservative religious culture.
Public ideology and institutional tendencies clash, the author argues, in the restructuring of the welfare state, the financing of the electoral system, and the backlash against women and minorities. These frictions are nowhere more apparent than on Christian right radio. Reinvigorating the intellectual tradition of the Frankfurt School, Apostolidis shows how ideas derived from early critical theory—in particular that of Theodor W. Adorno—can illuminate the political and social dynamics of this aspect of contemporary American culture. He uses and reworks Adorno’s theories to interpret the nationally broadcast Focus on the Family, revealing how the cultural discourse of the Christian right resonates with recent structural transformations in the American political economy. Apostolidis shows that the antidote to the Christian right’s marriage of religious and market fundamentalism lies not in a reinvocation of liberal fundamentals, but rather depends on a patient cultivation of the affinities between religion’s utopian impulses and radical, democratic challenges to the present political-economic order.
Mixing critical theory with detailed analysis, Stations of the Cross provides a needed contribution to sociopolitical studies of mass movements and will attract readers in sociology, political science, philosophy, and history.

                  Book Description

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of America's entry into World War II, this volume chronicles the careers of eight U.S.A. Zone commentators who worked for Nazi propagandist Josef Goebbels. Drawing upon a variety of documentary sources--letters written by the subjects to family, friends, and colleagues; treason trial transcripts; the contents of the BBC's wartime monitoring service; and FBI case files on the broadcasters--the author explores each broadcaster's political and personal motivations, and the influence of their broadcasts.

5 out of 5 stars Pick This Up And See For Yourself.......2007-08-15

I attended a recent seminar by Mr. Harvey at which we discussed the negative reviews on Amazon that appear to be written either by disgruntled competiting authors (whose books have been made obsolete by Mr. Harvey's books) or casino types who don't want readers to learn how to beat the house. I went home, then, and read the reviews and I have to say I'm appalled that the snakes who write under fictitious names and post critical comments that have nothing to do with the content of Mr. Harvey's books should be allowed to post self-serving remarks that are filled with lies. There is not one true remark in all of the pretend critical comments on this site. I encourage you to pick up the book and see for yourself. It's a shame that Amazon doesn't police these "reader" reviews and remove the offensive and self-serving ones that do an injustice to such great books as this one.

1 out of 5 stars When I play blackjar, .......2007-07-23

I am always astounded at the absolute lack of logic of most blackjack players I sit at the table with as illustrated by this common occurrence.

Someone makes an incorrect play at table and someone else (as often as not, the entire table) gets their knickers in a knot, thinking it will affect the probability of their own positive outcome.

Of course, a moments critical thinking will reveal that the change in card order could as well help the players as hurt them. (though I am sure someone will want to argue this with me).

So when I opened this book at B&N for a quick scan...there it is...don't play at tables where the other players don't play correctly, and a long senseless explanation as to why this would hurt your chances.

Yikes...and all down hill from there.

I actually feel ripped off just having scanned through this book for free.

And as for the review by "Kenn Richardson" starting with:

This book is, hands down, the best thing to come out in many, many years.

2 out of 5 stars Impressed with Theory- Not Convinced on Strategy.......2004-02-14

Much like the last reviewer, I'm not sure what to make out of Mr. Harvey's book. His method to the game, although fresh and creative, doesn't bring enough confidence where I would want to use his system in a game. The Circle of 13 seems to be ingeniously written- but all its hyped up to be are spreadsheets on probablities to win or bust on hands.

For example, he states that by having an A & 2, I can draw 5 cards which would help me win the hand. However, my odds on getting one of those 5 is slightly over 38%. Well yeah- no kidding. Based on his Circle of 13, 5 divided by 13 is a little over 38%. So what's so informative about that ?

Another issue I had is this model doesn't give much emphasis on hi-low card-counting, a system that I religiously rely on whenever I play. For anyone who does truly card-count, they would know that your seating position or the number of people at a table is irrelevant to your chances of winning. That's because you're relying on bet placements, which means you're betting at certain times when the card count gets high enough (or positive as some may say) that the odds swing in your favor where you increase your wage. Harvey practically neglects this in his book. He is so enthralled by his system that I don't believe he gives enough respect much less credibility to more realistic and systematic card theories of blackjack. The only information that I did enjoy was on shuffle tracking. His charts gave good examples on shuffles and their patterns.

Lastly, there are way too many intangibles in his system to keep track of, i.e., counting the Aces exclusively, determining the hole card of not just the dealer but other players (as if I'm going to sit there patiently and calculate my predictions on that!) and "repeating phenomenons". This is just a plethora of information any savy card player does not want to take with him to the table. Ladies and Gentleman, unless you have a photographic memory or are regarded as a scholar of mathematics, the speed of the deal is fast enough where you won't be able to take into account all of what Harvey is asking you to do.

I would recommend Knock-Out blackjack, which has tremendously improved my game and more importantly given me the confidence I need to beat the casino each time I go. There theory is not too simplistic yet not too technical and gives you a realistic method of how to beat the game. I have heard of good things on Wong's book and that will probably be my next purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic!.......2003-08-15

Imagine you have a goal. Imagine that goal is to walk into a casino, play blackjack, and leave with more money than you had when you entered. How do you achieve this goal? By utilizing the correct tools. Richard Harvey's Cutting Edge Blackjack is a toolbox crammed full of new and exciting tools that help you achieve your goal. Richard has developed and refined these tools with the loving care of a true craftsman. Some of the tools are difficult to handle, some of the tools may not make sense to you right away, some of the tools may require years of practice to utilize properly, but the tools are there. The tools themselves were crafted by hand. Instead of relying on and rehashing computer simulation, Richard used real cards to discover trends and card behavior patterns that computer simulations ignore. These patterns tend to repeat and offer insight never before realized at the tables. As an attendee to one of Richards's seminars, I witnessed the power of some of these tools. I was especially impressed by his ability to predict the value of the hole card at a pitch (face down) game. Impossible you say? Not when you use the tools in Cutting Edge Blackjack. I didn't say it was easy, I didn't say I could do it, but knowing it can be done is inspiring. Cutting Edge Blackjack debunks some popular myths, makes some bold assertions, but mainly shows advanced blackjack players ways to have profitable outings. Study and practice are required to attain most of the skills taught in the book, even advanced players may struggle with some of the methodology, but the tools are sound. I highly recommend this book for blackjack aficionados.

                        Book Description

After two decades of hands-on experience with performance management systems in some of the world's most well recognized organizations, Markle has come to propound what he calls "a universal law of modern business." People hate performance reviews. Drawing upon his studies of and experience with systems theory and illustrating his points with real-life examples, Markle explains why employees and managers both have come to regard the ubiquitous performance evaluation as industry's poorest performing, most ineffective, and least efficient personnel practice. By digging down to its roots, he helps us understand why attempts to correct the flawed system fail. He provides an innovative way to measure their ineffectiveness and inefficiency and then introduces his "catalytic coaching" to replace them. Markle shows how his system is superior to others in five key business outcomes: 1) positive behavioral change; 2) motivation to work hard; 3) retention of key contributors; 4) internal promotions and succession; and 5) prevention of and protection from lawsuits. Not only is catalytic coaching more effective, it is also more efficient: it requires far less time and paperwork to implement and maintain. Markle gives his readers all of the forms, instruments and detailed instructions they need to operationalize his system. Business executives, senior HR professionals, and organization development specialists will benefit particularly from his presentation, as will other managers, executives, and supervisors, all of whom must learn to "take ownership" of their responsibilities to their organizations and themselves.

                        1 out of 5 stars Unscientific Nonsense.......2007-02-12

The author spends nearly half the book with criticsm of performance measurement, a technique currently practiced by the vast majority of fortune 500 companies. He then sets up a "model" for assessing performance measurement techniques and uses this to "prove" that such techniques must fail, are totally useless and have adverse impacts on any organization deploying them. He then indicates that he alone knows what's best (apparently the rest of us are fools). Having poured scorn on his competition, he then puts forward the technique of Catalytic Coaching but of course fails to subject it to the same model that he used in his diatribe against performance measurement. The truth, as any management professional well knows, is that if you don't measure it, you can't manage it! Avoiding the issue does not resolve it. This book is unscientific nonsense dressed up in the language of science in order to deceive the reader.

5 out of 5 stars This is an important book for business leaders.......2002-01-26

Anyone who has been through a performance review or had to deliver one knows they are not providing the performance benefit they were designed to provide. In fact, they are usually demotivating and have a negative impact on performance. As a consultant to management and coach to CEOs, my experience has been that everyone hates the process, it doesn't deliver and it's painful. Garold Markle has an alternative which is working, is constructive, and leads to a feedback-rich culture of performance. Contrast this to the blame-oriented approach that we inherited. This is an important work. I recommend it highly. His approiach is clear and the tools supportive.

5 out of 5 stars caring , coaching and compassion with accountability.......2001-09-04

In my role as an advisor to CEO's, Presidents, and owners of midsize to large corporations,Gary's book has been very helpful and enlightening. After reading Gary's book, I highlighted several parts of it to share with those final decision makers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Most have purchased the book and shared it with their top staff for implimentation. Gary's approach of Catalytic Coaching integrates, in a clear way, the elements of caring, coaching, and compassion, with accountability, that so many business are searching for these days. I would recommend buying the book first and then contacting Gary Markle.

5 out of 5 stars Catalytic Coaching Effective Even in Large Law Firm.......2000-05-04

As managing partner for a large, downtown Houston law firm, I was searching for a new method of working with young lawyers and support staff and helping them grow. I found what I was searching for in Catalytic Coaching! After taking on the role of "coach", I have seen several personnel problems simply disappear and morale in our multi-floor office has skyrocketed. While I was not able to directly utilize the worksheets and action plans set forth in the appendix, the balance of the book was miraculously relevant to and instrumental in getting control of our personnel difficulties. This process is NOT liberal "raise the employee's self-esteem banter"...it IS an effective process and a valuable resource for any business, large or small. Both our organization and our employees have benefitted tremendously from it.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical Piece of the Management Puzzle.......2000-04-09

Recently I had the pleasure of enjoying Mr. Markle's company at a preofessional convention we attended in San Diego. I was delighted to hear that Gary's new book, "Catalytic Coaching" was now available through Amazon.com.

As an executive coach to CEO's and their senior management teams with Client's throughout north America, I found Gary's work to provide an exceptional piece to today's management puzzle. By joining Dr. Deming in challenging the value of the annual performance review system, Gary has redefined management's role into that of an internal coach to the employee.

Quite simply, "Catalytic Coaching" is focused on future employee performance. Instead of rehashing past issues, Gary's practical process proactively addresses the employee's workplace behaviors, and how they impact the organization's bottom line.

His process is clear, practical and highly attractive as an alternative to present-day evaluation systems which, I have personally observed in organizations throughout the world, simply do not work.

Reading the book, you can hear Gary's conversational style and strength as a speaker. The content is readable and concise, so much so that you will want to invite Gary as a speaker to your organziation.

To date, two of my Clients are exploring the process, and are planning on implementing "Catalytic Coaching" as their standard for improving employee performance. I look forward to being an integral part of this transformation.

Having twice read the book from cover-to-cover, I felt compelled to submit these comments on Gary's work. Please feel free to contact me should you desire further information or clarification.
