Cracked Coverage: Television News, The Anti-Cocaine Crusade, and the Reagan Legacy
Jimmie L. Reeves , and Richard Campbell Manufacturer: Duke University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0822314916 |
Book Description
Carefully documenting the deceptions and excesses of television news coverage of the so-called cocaine epidemic, Cracked Coverage stands as a bold indictment of the backlash politics of the Reagan coalition and its implicit racism, the mercenary outlook of the drug control establishment, and the enterprising reporting of crusading journalism. Blending theoretical and empirical analyses, Jimmie L. Reeves and Richard Campbell explore how TV news not only interprets "reality" in ways that reflect prevailing ideologies, but is in many respects responsible for constructing that reality. Their examination of the complexity of television and its role in American social, cultural, and political conflict is focused specifically on the ways in which American television during the Reagan years helped stage and legitimate the "war on drugs," one of the great moral panics of the postwar era.Customer Reviews:

Internet Television (European Institute for the Media)
Manufacturer: Lawrence Erlbaum ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 080584306X |
Book Description
Internet TV is the quintessential digital convergence medium, linking television, telecommunications, the Internet, computer applications, games, and more. Soon, venturing beyond the convenience of viewer choice and control, Internet TV will enable and encourage new types of entertainment, education, and games that take advantage of the Internet's interactive capabilities. What Internet TV is today and can be in the future forms the context for this book.
Arising from collaboration between the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) and the European Institute for the Media (EIM), this volume investigates the advent of widely available individual broadband Internet communications and their impact on the development of Internet TV. Editors Eli Noam, Jo Groebel, and Darcy Gerbarg have collected seminal papers by leaders from the U.S. and European media and technology industries that offer a critical look at the impact of interactivity on television content, and address the need for media organizations to create interactive programming in this untapped realm with unclear consumer interest and desires.
Each section of the volume fleshes out key issues and concepts of television and the Internet:
*Part I, Infrastructure Implications of Internet TV, discusses questions about the required network capacity for various quality grades to deliver individualized broadband to homes.
*Part II, Network Business Models and Strategies, addresses the business challenges of making Internet TV a financial success.
*Part III, Policy, examines policy issues, including copyright and regulation.
*Part IV, Content and Culture, reviews available content, those creating it, and how consumers view Internet TV content.
*Part V, Future Impacts, considers future global prospects for Internet TV content creation and distribution.
Internet Television is an essential resource for professionals and scholars in new technology and media studies, media policy, telecommunication, broadcasting, and related areas. It is also appropriate for graduate seminars in telecommunications, media and new technologies, and broadcasting and the Internet.

Stations of the Cross: Adorno and Christian Right Radio
Paul Apostolidis , and Paul Apostolidis Manufacturer: Duke University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0822325411 |
Amazon.com
For all that's been written in recent years about the Christian Coalition, Promise Keepers, and other conservative evangelical movements in the United States, perhaps the most important institution among them--James Dobson's enormously popular radio program Focus on the Family--has not received its due from secular observers. Paul Apostolidis hopes to change that with Stations of the Cross. This is an academic treatment, and the first chapter begins with a deadening line: "Marx famously concluded his Theses on Feuerbach by declaring..." Yet there's plenty of rich thought on these pages for readers interested in the Christian Right and willing to plow their way through some jargon. In a useful introduction, Apostolidis describes Dobson's rise and appeal: he's not a Pat Robertson or Jimmy Swaggart-like figure, but a bestselling child psychologist who devotes much of his airtime to parenting advice rather than politics or sermonizing. In addition, his "almost complete avoidance of the medium of television has been instrumental to his image as the one conservative evangelical leader with class and a clear conscience." Apostolidis is certainly no fan of Dobson's--this is a left-wing critique, and at times an extremely negative one. Yet he strives for objectivity. Even when he's discussing something he clearly finds troubling--such as Dobson's views on "curing" homosexuals--he doesn't resort to a condescending tone of irreligious judgment. He does, however, suggest that Dobson's rhetoric of Christian compassion is out of step with a politics of rolling back the welfare state and battling racial preferences. And, interestingly, he proposes overcoming Christian conservatism not with secularism, but with a form of liberal religiosity. There's a more accessible book to be written on this subject, but the analysis in Stations of the Cross is original enough to make it worth reading, especially by followers of People for the American Way and similar organizations. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Since the 1970s, American society has provided especially fertile ground for the growth of the Christian right and its influence on both political and cultural discourse. In Stations of the Cross political theorist Paul Apostolidis shows how a critical component of this movement’s popular cultureâevangelical conservative radioâinteracts with the current U.S. political economy. By examining in particular James Dobson’s enormously influential program, Focus on the Familyâits messages, politics, and effectsâApostolidis reveals the complex nature of contemporary conservative religious culture.

Impressed with Theory- Not Convinced on Strategy.......2004-02-14
For example, he states that by having an A & 2, I can draw 5 cards which would help me win the hand. However, my odds on getting one of those 5 is slightly over 38%. Well yeah- no kidding. Based on his Circle of 13, 5 divided by 13 is a little over 38%. So what's so informative about that ?
Another issue I had is this model doesn't give much emphasis on hi-low card-counting, a system that I religiously rely on whenever I play. For anyone who does truly card-count, they would know that your seating position or the number of people at a table is irrelevant to your chances of winning. That's because you're relying on bet placements, which means you're betting at certain times when the card count gets high enough (or positive as some may say) that the odds swing in your favor where you increase your wage. Harvey practically neglects this in his book. He is so enthralled by his system that I don't believe he gives enough respect much less credibility to more realistic and systematic card theories of blackjack. The only information that I did enjoy was on shuffle tracking. His charts gave good examples on shuffles and their patterns.
Lastly, there are way too many intangibles in his system to keep track of, i.e., counting the Aces exclusively, determining the hole card of not just the dealer but other players (as if I'm going to sit there patiently and calculate my predictions on that!) and "repeating phenomenons". This is just a plethora of information any savy card player does not want to take with him to the table. Ladies and Gentleman, unless you have a photographic memory or are regarded as a scholar of mathematics, the speed of the deal is fast enough where you won't be able to take into account all of what Harvey is asking you to do.
I would recommend Knock-Out blackjack, which has tremendously improved my game and more importantly given me the confidence I need to beat the casino each time I go. There theory is not too simplistic yet not too technical and gives you a realistic method of how to beat the game. I have heard of good things on Wong's book and that will probably be my next purchase.
This book is fantastic!.......2003-08-15

Catalytic Coaching: The End of the Performance Review
Garold L. Markle Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1567203086 |
Book Description
After two decades of hands-on experience with performance management systems in some of the world's most well recognized organizations, Markle has come to propound what he calls "a universal law of modern business." People hate performance reviews. Drawing upon his studies of and experience with systems theory and illustrating his points with real-life examples, Markle explains why employees and managers both have come to regard the ubiquitous performance evaluation as industry's poorest performing, most ineffective, and least efficient personnel practice. By digging down to its roots, he helps us understand why attempts to correct the flawed system fail. He provides an innovative way to measure their ineffectiveness and inefficiency and then introduces his "catalytic coaching" to replace them. Markle shows how his system is superior to others in five key business outcomes: 1) positive behavioral change; 2) motivation to work hard; 3) retention of key contributors; 4) internal promotions and succession; and 5) prevention of and protection from lawsuits. Not only is catalytic coaching more effective, it is also more efficient: it requires far less time and paperwork to implement and maintain. Markle gives his readers all of the forms, instruments and detailed instructions they need to operationalize his system. Business executives, senior HR professionals, and organization development specialists will benefit particularly from his presentation, as will other managers, executives, and supervisors, all of whom must learn to "take ownership" of their responsibilities to their organizations and themselves.Customer Reviews:

A Critical Piece of the Management Puzzle.......2000-04-09
As an executive coach to CEO's and their senior management teams with Client's throughout north America, I found Gary's work to provide an exceptional piece to today's management puzzle. By joining Dr. Deming in challenging the value of the annual performance review system, Gary has redefined management's role into that of an internal coach to the employee.
Quite simply, "Catalytic Coaching" is focused on future employee performance. Instead of rehashing past issues, Gary's practical process proactively addresses the employee's workplace behaviors, and how they impact the organization's bottom line.
His process is clear, practical and highly attractive as an alternative to present-day evaluation systems which, I have personally observed in organizations throughout the world, simply do not work.
Reading the book, you can hear Gary's conversational style and strength as a speaker. The content is readable and concise, so much so that you will want to invite Gary as a speaker to your organziation.
To date, two of my Clients are exploring the process, and are planning on implementing "Catalytic Coaching" as their standard for improving employee performance. I look forward to being an integral part of this transformation.
Having twice read the book from cover-to-cover, I felt compelled to submit these comments on Gary's work. Please feel free to contact me should you desire further information or clarification.
