5 out of 5 stars A perfect gift for the movie buff and booklover,.......2005-12-10

This was written by the editor of FIRSTS magazine, the publication for those who collect or are simply interested in first editions and other collectable books.

Each essay in the book features a picture of the dustjacket of the first edition discussed, along with the story of the book and the film made from the book, the side story of how the film was adapted, the players involved, and sometimes a plot analysis.

This book has led me to discover, or rediscover, many of the classics I had previously passed over. James Hilton's FAR HORIZON, for instance, which differs from the movies made from it, although the movies have their special value too. William Faulkner's INTRUDER IN THE DUST, Harper Lee's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, B. Traven's THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, John Le Carre's THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, Erskine Caldwell's TOBACCO ROAD, James Jones's FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, Walter Van Tilburg Clark's THE OX-BOW INCIDENT, and many, many others.

Some of the selections are well known classics; others are little known gems, ripe for rediscovery. Each book/film essay runs three or four pages, and the author shares his own favorites and insights. It is a handsome volume in hardcover, with the Maltese Falcon on the dustjacket, with about 275 pages and an easy-to-read print. It is full of delights.

For instance: Of Jessamyn West's THE FRIENDLY PERSUASION, the author says his favorite episode is when Jess, the father in the family played by Gary Cooper in the movie, becomes "morbidly interested in a "wen"--a small growth--on his neck. He is convinced the wen is a sign of some fatal disease and that he is going to die. He plans to visit his parents' church as a farewell to life. Jess packs up his new nursery stock and sets out to visit his customers."

"On the trip, he finds that one customer after another has real trouble. Jess's obsession with the wen fades as he is confronted with others' genuine afflictions. His last stop is the most disturbing. A young woman is desperately ill; her weak husband, perceiving trouble, has left her alone to die. Jess spends the evening comforting her and listening to her talk. When he returns home, the ordinary wen has returned to its proper perspective: a small, harmless bump on his neck."

I'd seen the movie and read the book long ago, but I could not recall that incident--until I read of it again in here. Now I see it afresh, in context with the making of the book and the making of the movie from the book.

If you are looking for a gift for the film buff or the first edition collector, you cannot go wrong here, as this one brims with such delightful items.

Highly recommended.

Book Description

Whiskey and porn stars, hot reds and car crashes, black leather and high heels, overdoses and death. This is the life of Mötley Crüe, the heaviest drinking, hardest fighting, most oversexed and arrogant band in the world. Their unbelievable exploits are the stuff of rock 'n' roll legend. They nailed the hottest chicks, started the bloodiest fights, partied with the biggest drug dealers, and got to know the inside of every jail cell from California to Japan. They have dedicated an entire career to living life to its extreme, from the greatest fantasies to the darkest tragedies. Tommy married two international sex symbols; Vince killed a man and lost a daughter to cancer;Nikki overdosed, rose from the dead, and then OD'd again the next day; and Wick shot a woman and tried to hang his own brother. But that's just the beginning. Fueled by every drug they could get their hands on and obscene amounts of alcohol, driven by fury and headed straight for hell, Mötley Crüe raged through two decades, leaving behind a trail of debauched women, trashed hotel rooms, crashed cars, psychotic managers, and broken bones that has left the music industry cringing to this day. All these unspeakable acts, not to mention their dire consequences, are laid bare in The Dirt.

Here -- directly from Nikki, Vince, Tommy, and Mick -- is the unexpurgated version of the whole glorious, gut-wrenching story. In these pages, published for the first time anywhere, are Tommy Lee's letters to Pamela Anderson from prison: Mick's confession to having an incurable disease that is slowly killing him; Vince's experience burying his own daughter -- and the train wreck that his life became afterward; and Nikki's anguished struggle to deal with an entire life fueled by anger over his childhood abandonment, his discovery of the family he never knew he had -- and his subsequent loss of them. And all of it accompanied by scores of rare, never-before-published photographs, mug shots, and handwritten lyrics. No one is spared. Not David Lee Roth, Ozzy Osbourne, Vanity, Aerosmith, Heather Locklear, AC/DC, Lita Ford, Iron Maiden, Pamela Anderson, Guns N' Roses, Donna D'Errico, RATT, or those two girls from Dallas, Texas.

Make no mistake about it: these guys are geniuses. They invented glam metal and then left it in the dust; sold more than forty million albums from Shout at the Devil to Dr. Feelgood; toured the world dozen times and have the scars to prove it it; and maintained a rabid following in an era of throwaway pop stars. Mötley Crüe has done nothing less than tattoo the psyche of the entire MTV generation. They are the ultimate rock 'n' roll band. And if you don't believe it, read The Dirt. You don't know what decadence is...

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30

Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-18

From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

5 out of 5 stars Anazing !!.......2007-09-18

I loved the book the most amazing thing i have ever read inmy life !!!

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly great book.......2007-09-17

You will wet your pants laughing within the first 5 pages. I am half way through the book and learning alot about the band and Nikki Sixx himself. There is alot people do not know. Can't wait to finish the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but just a little over-embelished........2007-09-13

This book is a FUN read and I have no doubt that for the most part things went down exactly as described. However I've also read Neil Strauss' other books and while a brilliant writer, he tend to make things larger than life and more polished than they really were (read the Game especially for examples of this.) Some things in the book seem a little too "neatly" described and he glosses over some of the more negative aspects of Motley Crue (And I grew up with them and obsessively followed their press since I was in middle school.)

But definitely a thumbs up. Look forward to reading Nikki's new book for comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Overall Very good!.......2007-05-09

This is a great tab book for those of us who love Crue. Covers many of their songs throughout the "decade of decadence". This is a perfect companion to the Motley Crue Greatest Hits CD.

My only complaint is that it's missing "Too young to fall in love" and the original version of "Shout at the Devil", other than that, it's perfect!

Until something more comprehensive comes out, this is your #1 Crue tab book!

It has to be tough being Motley Crue, well into middle age, and you've blown all your money on booze, smack, blow, and strippers. Now nobody buys your cds, because your music didn't age well (unlike Guns N' Roses). Sorry guys

5 out of 5 stars well, please don't hold it against billy.......2003-03-19

although he is listed as the author of the book, i must confess that i, byron coley, was the one who actually did the deed. i was brought in at the 11th hour, when tom carson -- then music editor for the village voice -- who had contracted to write the book failed to deliver it. i was given ten days to take it from contract to manuscript and that's what happened. not eager to put my own name on the spine, i used that of my brother-in-law, mr. dwight, since i thought he might be able to use the book as extra credit for a writing class he was then taking. he did not end up using it, but the book bears his name nonetheless. interestingly, perhaps, the introductory chapter was excised by the lawyers at ballantines for being too negative. it subsequently appeared in a long gone australian fanzine. as to the qualities of the book -- well, it is the best crue bio i have read. but then, that last one was supposed to be great. and this one certainly ain't that.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate on The Crue.......2002-07-13

Nobody did metal like the Crue. And nobody did the Crue like Billy Dwight. This former bouncer at Pearl Street nightclub in Northampton, Massachusetts brings the band to vivid life in his addition to the Monsters of Metal series. Of special interest to any reader would be the fact that Mr Dwight is now a town coucilman in Northampton - one of the most liberal towns in the entire US and certainly a community that might be shocked by the rampant sexism and homophobia that abounds in this breezy, albeit quite literary study.

                Book Description

A Ninja was someone whose very existence expressed the spirit of Budo. He would protect himself with techniques not of assassination but rather of sensation and an acute awareness of his natural surroundings. He would avoid unnecessary conflict, and even if armed with a blade, would find a way
to win without staining it. These are the true techniques of Ninjutsu, and the art in which Ninja persistently trained.

Ninja exercised endurance throughout their secretive lives in order to protect their families, their clans, and their country. Their harsh training endowed them with a tough but pliant spirit, and martial skills suitable for coping with any situation, together with a sense of awareness that had
                universal application.

Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, Ph. D, is the most famous Ninja grandmaster in the world today. In this book, he explains the essence, truth, and wisdom of Ninjutsu, an art of a thousand forms and innumerable variations. Through perceptive observations and many detailed pictures, the author reveals the hidden
reality behind this mysterious and fascinating martial art. The Way of the Ninja will help widen readers' perceptions and deepen their understanding of two essential principles. One is that Ninjutsu is the very backbone of the martial arts; the other, that Ninjutsu reveals their true spiritual
                significance.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book about Ninjutsu on the market.......2007-08-16

Masaaki Hatsumi is without a doubt the most advanced master of Ninjutsu alive.
This book tries to give you a better understanding of the ideas behind this art (it cannot be called sport).
It doesn`t teach you real techniques, but no book could ever do that, but will help you to seperate the movie-nonsense from reality and hopefully encourages you to start practicing this wonderful art yourself, as I am doing for years now.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-23

I've been a practioner in the Bujinkan since 1992. If you study this art then you will understand the movements that you see shown. You'll be able to make the leap and know what is actually going in the pictures. As far as philosphy goes, its the Boss's art. The Boss has been dealing with the negative Hollywood Image for years and this book explains his opinion and his knowledge on the subject of Ninjutsu. No one knows this subject better than him. If you want to believe Hollywood, Turnbell, and all the rest, then go ahead. Or believe what the Boss is talking about. Its really your choice.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Kodansha publication!.......2007-02-17

Incredibly crisp photos, tons of information about ninpo taijutsu, impressive jacket, everything you could want. Kodansha publications might cost a little more, but I think they're worth every cent. If you have an interest in ninpo, jujutsu, taijutsu or koryu arts in general, be sure to pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must!.......2006-10-14

If you are a practioner in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu then you absolutely must own this book. Among some of the topics covered are the kihon happo, myths, and more.

                4 out of 5 stars Good book..........2006-06-08

There are three reasons to read this book:
                - The Philosophy
                - The History
                - The Techniques

In terms of the first two, this is a great book. There are a lot of great insights into budo, aspects of shinobi, and even in being. The history, along with images of the equipment worn and used and their explanations are probably the best I've found in any book.

Now, that said, and where this book lacks, is in the techniques. Don't misunderstand, the techniques themselves are fantastic... That is, if you learn them from a qualified instructor. If not, you won't be able to make out the moves at all. Images are often blurry and very often are out of order.

All in all, this is a great book on the teachings of the Bujinkan. While I can't personally vouch for the truth in relation to the classical ninja, I am personally willing to accept that, seeing as how Dr. Hatsumi is Soke of Togakure-ryu and eight other systems, he has authority behind his words.

For the record, I study ninjutsu under a Bujinkan certified instructor, so that may colour my opinions a bit.

I really enjoyed this book! The depth of knowledge that Stephen Hayes teaches in this whole series is amazing, I recommed all of this series to anyone whishing to see the "whole picture" that this ancient warrior art teaches...Oh by the way to the reviewer calling Mr. Hayes a liar etc...going to most of Mr. Hayes books and saying some of the same things makes you look jealous not scholar like in your reviews. I never could understand those people so insistant that you can't learn martial arts from books ... perhaps, you can't master martial arts from books is more accurate. I remember using this book and a couple of other ninja books from his master as a foundation of my progressive martial arts training in my late teens.
Personally, who cares if he is or is not the first American ninja, or that he is not practicing tooth-and-nail to the tee authentic traditional ninjitsu. Actually, most martial arts have grown to a point were they are no longer traditional to merge with the times. So if you are one of those cry-baby traditionalists then take your ball, and go to the house this book is probably not for you. People grow, or they are suppost to at least.
Ninja: Spirit of the Shadow Warrior is a excellent read, and I give it the thumbs up.

Written by the first American ninjutsu teacher, this book covers the history of ninjutsu, philosophy, fighting, the mind as a tool of the spirit, active meditation, extended realities and the art of understanding. Fully illustrated techniques with step-by-step photos and instructions.

                1 out of 5 stars Um.........2003-09-24

This book is mostly filled with bad atempts at trying to teach taijutsu, something you shouldn't learning from a book in the first place. Stephen K. Hayes is a liar and wrote these books when he did not fully understand Ninpo. He uses an innaccurate straight blade square guard sword, is innaccurate in his use of the elements, and he is also innaccurate on his history of ninjutsu evolving from buddhist monks who were supressed for practicing their religion. Stephen hayes also lied about being the first westerner to ever train in ninjutsu (Quinten Chambers or Doron Navon anybody??). I wouldn't buy this book if I were you. The rest of the series is just as horrible. Go purchase some books from Soke Hatsumi. It's best to get things staright from the source.

4 out of 5 stars An unusually thoughtful work........2003-03-19

Stephen K. Hayes's SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR is an unusual sort of book. First published in 1980, Hayes's volume has undergone twenty-six printings(!) as of 2001, but still retains the feel of a very specific era in American culture: the Ninja Era. During the Ninja Era, which endured through a large chunk of the 1980s, the national obsession with everything ninja knew practically no bounds. There were ninja movies, ninja games, ninja in comics, ninja weapons and, of course, ninja books. SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR is the first of five "how to" volumes by Hayes that exploded onto the eager stage of the Ninja Era.

SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR is unusual in that it's not a book specifically about anything. A quick flip-through reveals the step-by-step photo panels of combat that typify many books on martial arts, but that's only part of the total package. Other chapters in the book include history, philosophical discussion, meditation techniques, and even a series of exercises meant to expand an individual's awareness of what can only be described as ESP. This is a lot of ground to cover, perhaps too much. Weighing in at a slender 143 pages, Hayes's ninja volume scarcely has time to dwell on anything in depth, giving a reader the sense of rapid skimming even during a careful read. While this keeps a reader from growing bored (there's hardly time), it also leaves a vague sense of dissatisfaction when the last page has turned. There doesn't seem to be enough meat on this bone.

This is not to suggest that SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR is not worth a read. Author Hayes is, according to his bio, the first non-Japanese to be awarded the highest honor in the "Togakure Ryu ninjutsu tradition." He parlayed this achievement into a number of books beyond this series and enjoyed some measure of popularity during the Ninja Era, but faded into relative obscurity shortly thereafter. His writing style in SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR is quiet and deeply metaphorical. Bits of his poetry appear scattered throughout the book's pages. For those expecting a muscular, testosterone-heavy exploration of action-movie ninja, Hayes's book will be a genuine surprise. Even those with no interest in shuriken-tossing, sword-swinging ninja can find lots of useful material in the philosophy and meditation chapters, the ones that veer so far away from the stereotypical ninja material of the Ninja Era as to be almost unrecognizable.

The text isn't the only thing that sometimes seems out of place. Hayes appears throughout the book in black-and-white photographs, a bearded guru in black garments. Like his soft-toned, almost contemplative writing style, he seems too darned nice to be mixing it up with edged weapons, or creeping around on rooftops on assassination missions. But it's this peculiarity in the book that eventually makes it worthwhile. While SPIRIT OF THE SHADOW WARRIOR would not even exist were it not for the Ninja Era, its refusal to fit neatly into the mold of popular culture lends Hayes's writing relevance it might not otherwise have had.

For more than 700 years Japan was dominated by a military caste-the samurai. To the Western mind these fearsome warriors-samurai, the masterless ronin, and the assassin ninja-have always been a source of mystery and wonder, combining the idealism of chivalry with military fanaticism. THE WAYS OF THE SAMURAI digs beneath the myth and reveals a truth even more amazing about the men who practiced a discipline drawn from Zen and Confucian ethics-bushido, the way of the warrior.

THE WAYS OF THE SAMURAI digs beneath the myth and reveals a truth even more amazing about the men who practiced a discipline drawn from Zen and Confucian ethics-bushido, the way of the warrior. THE WAYS OF THE SAMURAI presents all aspects of a Samurai's life: from training and culture to armor and weapons. It also recounts the greatest warriors including Oda Nobunaga a man of humble birth who at the time of his death in 1582 controlled thirty of Japan's sixty-eight provinces and had earned the distinction in Japanese history of being the first of the three great unifiers of Japan; and Takeda Shingen, a warrior whose reputation was so great that, in order to keep rival clans from launching a war against the Takeda clan, news of his death was kept secret for more than a year. And, THE WAYS OF THE SAMURAI includes accounts of the epic battles that raged during the 100-year period in Japanese history known as Sengoku-jidai-'Age of the Country at War."

                      2 out of 5 stars Childish Read.......2006-05-19

This book attempts to discuss the samurai but it is written as it was intended for children to read. The chapter on ninja truly was one fixed with Hollywood like fiction, i.e. the ninja having a glider-like flyer that they used to drop bombs on a castle. Also powders taht caused their target to laugh and could not be stopped, sort of like the joker from Batman, and finally mentioned that a throwing star could kill their enemy while they hid among the crowd. Absolutely not true. The throwing star was not a weapon that killed people. It was used more for a "stop the chase" weapon. I found this book to be poorly written and even more poorly researched in many areas. I truly would not recommend this book to anyone. I am sorry I even bought it.

This book seems to be more of a children's book. It's filled with storytime anecdotes that could be told as bedtime stories to kids interested after catching a special on the Discovery Channel about Japan and the Samurai.

It's easy to read, I finished it in a day, nice and short, and it's full of fun facts. The stories are told and that's that.

Richard I. Henderson's steadfast refusal to add value to his classic textbook more or less forced me into adopting this book. I've used Henderson for over fifteen years, but could not continue to have my students backfill the many holes in that old book.

This book is better in that respect, but does suffer from a "lightness of treatment" that I did not have to worry about with Henderson. Henderson was completely comprehensive; this book cannot claim that.

But it's a good book, and better than Henderson in its current state.

Compensation is not the most popular course in the undergraduate curriculum, but this text makes it much more attractive. The examples are very easy to follow and the chapters flow well. As an instructor looking for something to make a very important topic more accessible to students, I was delighted to find this text. I highly recommend it.

I have seen many textbooks that are relentlessly boring due to the author's inability to balance technical and nontechnical jargon. But, this book somehow masters the ability to deliver relevant knowlege in an explicit manner. If you really want to know the foundations of compensating and you do not want to be bombarded by irrelevant wordiness, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a text my students like! That's a victory........1999-03-04

This is a well written, comprehensive presentation of compensation and benefits, including such subjects as skill / knowledge based pay and executive and international compensation. Its features include summaries, questions with links to the www, key terms, and thought-provoking "flip side of the coin" and "reflection" inserts. Includes a useful glossary of terms. The author places considerable emphasis on current issues and that is appreciated.

I am writing as a reviewer, consultant and university instructor. I use this text in teaching my introductory compensation course at UCLA's School of Business and Management. I have tried many texts that my students bemoaned as too technical, boring, and somniferous. But my students find this text highly readable, understandable and interesting. That's a victory, especially when my students are mostly working HR professionals who drag themselves to class through the clogged freeways of Los Angeles. The least I can offer them is a good textbook; this is it!
