Pacino grew up sharing a three-room apartment in the Bronx with nine people in what he describes as his "New York Huckleberry Finn" childhood. Raised mostly by his grandparents and his mother, Pacino began drinking at age thirteen. Shortly after he was admitted to the renowned High School for Performing Arts, his classmates nicknamed him "Marlon," after Marlon Brando, even though Pacino didn't know who Brando was. Renowned acting coach Charlie Laughton saw Pacino when he was nineteen in the stairwell of a Bronx tenement, and the first words out of Laughton's mouth were "You are going to be a star." And so began a fabled, lifelong friendship that nurtured Al through years of not knowing where his next meal would come from until finally -- at age twenty-six -- he landed his first salaried acting job.

Grobel and Pacino leave few stones unturned, touching on the times when Pacino played piano in jazz clubs until four a.m. before showing up on the set of Scarecrow a few hours later for a full day's work; when he ate Valium like candy at the Academy Awards; and when he realized he had been in a long pattern of work and drink.

As the pivotal character in The Godfather trilogy and the cult classic Scarface, Pacino has enshrined himself in film history. He's worked with most of Hollywood's brightest luminaries such as Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Michael Mann, Norman Jewison, Brian De Palma, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, and Robin Williams, among many others. He was nominated for eight Academy Awards before winning the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Scent of a Woman. Pacino still seems to prefer his work onstage to film and, if he's moved by a script or play, is quick to take parts in independent productions.

Al Pacino is an intensely personal window into the life of an artist concerned more with the process of his art than with the fruits of his labor, a creative genius at the peak of his artistic powers who, after all these years, still longs to grow and learn more about his craft. And, for now, it's as close to a memoir as we're likely to get.

Excellent book in interview form which delves deep into the fascinating and complex psyche of one of the most accomplished and gifted actors in cinema history. Reknown journalist and writer Lawrence Grobel goes to where no other interviewer/reporter has gone before:deep into the mind and thought process of legendary film and stage actor extraordinaire Al Pacino. This fantastic and thorough book explains in great depth the complex and brilliant acting career of Al Pacino. If you love Pacino's work like I do you will love this book. Highly recommended and entertaining. Al is widely known not only for his remarkable work on film and in the theater but for his passion for his craft. He is passionate about acting and is a very serious actor but who would of thought that this dark and intense actor would have a sense of humor. Some of the answers that he gives to Lawrence Grobel are actually quite funny. He can be serious when he needs to be and quite amusing when he feels the need. Get this book and you will not be disappointed. He discusses in great detail his entire career from his humble beginnings when he was a homeless struggling actor to his defining status as an icon of American cinema.

This is a great book for several reasons:

1. Pacino gives insight on many of his movies, discussing why he feels they were hit or miss.

2. Pacino talks about off-the-camera stuff, such as his childhood, his struggles in trying to become an accomplished actor and much more.

3. Pacino elaborates on his true passion and where he returns when his career is in a slump.

The introduction is very strong and interesting because it summarizes his career work. If you like Al Pacino, you gotta have this book.

Bought as gift for relative who is a tremendous Al Pacino fan. Paged through it myself, briefly, and realized it to be a interesting way to understand Pacino, the man, in a series of interviews dating back to 1979. Sure to be an easy and entertaining read.

The friendship between interviewer Lawrence Grobel and Al Pacino that developed over the years represented by the interviews in this collection contributes to the frankness of the revealing and insightful dialogue.

The two men explore Pacino's approach to his craft and career and the result is a fresh appreciation for the body of work Pacino has accomplished. For anyone interested in his films or the movie industry this is an excellent choice.

Beginning in 1979 and running through 2005 the interviews capture some of Pacino's thinking at different stages of his career and there is a richness derived from this approach that might be missed in a retrospective biography.

    This is a extremely well written book..andrew yule does a great job on this book which i can imagine was not too easy judging by how private al pacino is..al pacino is one of if not my favorite actor and i thought i knew about him but after reading this i feel like i really came way seeing al pacino in another light.

    the book can be perceived as not a true bio by some as it doesn't go real deep into al's life...it mainly explores and reveals his work..but then you will find that al pacino's life is "the work"..al pacino is the definition of what a actor is..and you will see that after reading this book..the author yule is given access to lots of sources and it is a authorized bio..as he gives lots and lots of great quotes from marty bergman,charlie laughton,and pacino himself...which are great.

    how it goes it is will basically go in order by all the work he's done and it will tell stories about what happened behind the scenes it will give quotes of all the people involved and will show what happened..then afterwards it will always show you what "professional" critics wrote about the work..which i think is a good idea..it sheds light into how the work was perceived at the time...

    and what i really took to heart from this book is how much critics are scum..not that the author portrayed them as this..i just can't believe how much critics have without mercy assaulted and attacked pacino...pacino gives his blood to his work...he gives everything...he immerses himself so deeply into his characters that it is almost scary...and sometimes he will put so much work in and so much sweat and then you see these critics sitting on their fat butts just bashing his work..these talentless nobodies destroying all pacino has done..and it is really sad and really angers me..i have really never payed that much attention to "critics" but now i see just how disgusting these people are...to spit on someones art is shameful.

    you will learn alot from this book..about al pacino and dustin hoffman and their quiet rivalry of sorts...you will learn about john cazale and james hayden who's careers and lives were ended too short..and you will learn alot about pacino and his work.

    i highly reccommend this great book by andrew yule if you are a pacino fan or if you are just an actor or like acting..this should be in every actor's library as an example of what a true actor is.

    Al Pacino: A Life on the Wire is a great book! I am very impressed because even though Al Pacino went through a lot of hard times in his life, he made it. He is a real fighter, and he has proven that people should never give up; they must follow their dreams. Yule presented Al Pacino's life in general in an easy-to-follow way, and the reader can understand things well about Al Pacino as a person. I especially like Al's sense of humor, his passion for his job, and his attitude towards marriage. Al is definitely a free spirit and an accomplished actor!

    In response to the Kirkus Review of Life on the Wire: The book does not report that Al Pacino's mother left him at three. She died when Pacino was 22 years old. Pacino's father left the family when Pacino was 3. The book clearly states these facts.

      For us that knew Ed, he was not a money hungry person nor was he trying to hit up Pacino for money. Ed was a beautiful person and he cared for Pacino very much. Ed passed away on June 29,2004. He was only 72 years old.He will be very missed and we all love you Ed.Rest In Peace and God Bless.

      This book tells the story of two people whose careers took totally different paths - one to success and one to near complete failure. The author of this book, Edward De Leo, worked with Al as a mentor very early on in Pacino's acting career, and probably helped him a great deal, but once Al became successful, De Leo was little more than a nuisance to him, hitting him up for movie parts and money over the years. The story of Edward De Leo's life is really pretty pitiful and the introduction of little bits of information about Pacino, although somewhat interesting at times, fail to disguise this book as anything other than one more attempt by a man who perhaps feels entitled to a piece of Al's success, to exploit it. Kudos to Pacino, who, by all accounts, treated this "old friend" with kindness and generosity. For Pacino fans, there are some interesting tidbits...

                        2 out of 5 stars A disappointment, maybe useful for specialists.......2007-03-18

                        I very much liked the first volume in this series, but by comparison to the volume on the advance and gambit lines, this book is a huge disapointment. When I opened the book, i looked for comments on the lines I play most as black, and discovered they weren't covered. This was amazing, since I play the main lines!

                        In all likelihood, Mikhail Podgaets is the principal author; his name appears on the cover under Karpov's. When Karpov co-authored The Caro-Kann in Black and White with Beliavsky, the first thing he covered under the Panov was a transposition into "The Karpov Variation" of the Nimzo. The transposition isn't even mentioned in this book. How likely is it, if Karpov were the primary author, that he would ignore the Karpov variation, especially as it's his preferred choice against the Panov? (Incidentally, it's well covered in Hansen's book on the Rubenstein)

                        In the preface the author(s) state(s) that variations characteristic of other openings would not be covered. What's really poor is that the transposition points aren't even identified, and the Panov is largely about the transpositions.

                        There are other gigantic gaps: in the good but fairly limited repertoire book "Easy Guide to the Panov" Agaard gives two chapters on what he identifies as the most popular lines in the Panov, (linew in the B-b4 Panov where black captures on c4 and castles. Thess lines, used by Karpov, go unmentioned. In the Steiner, the line where white takes twice on d5 and black recaptures with the queen is given, a less popular line, popular in the former USSR, but not used by Karpov, and one which is essentially a QGA. But the much more popular knight recapture is ignored.

                        Lots of the stuff in the book is high quality,( hence the two stars rather than one) and it will probably be useful to those who specialize in the Caro-Kann,(for instance the Steiner queen capture line has better coverage here than in anything else I've seen) but as an overall guide it's totally inadequate, and someone taking up the opening - particularly as white- would be better served by almost anything else.

                        This book was required by my college professor, and I enjoyed reading it. It is very easy to read and very enjoyable as well. Excellent examples, and well laid out material. The course was very good as well. If you want a good introductory book about marketing services for a Nonprofit Organization then consider this one.

                        Radtke takes a generally vague term "P.R" and makes specific, detailed entry ways that prove essential in the creation of a public relations framework. The text concentrates on breaking up tasks into manageable units from the creation of the perfect mission statement to completion of an internal audit. The internal audit is a great example of the way Radtke approaches every angle of the P.R. question; Radtke isn't just focused on demographics (or psychographics or geographics--all are explained here) or target audiences but she also encourages readers to investigate the inner workings of their specific organization. By examining the specific organization (from the number of phones to the personality of the staff) Radtke helps you design the most appropriate plan for your non-profit group. The accompanying C.D. helps you utilize the detailed models in the text and it's terribly easy to use, making the learning process much more fun. My only complaint would be that the information presented is a bit dense, making steady reading somewhat difficult. However, I reccomend Lawrence Wallack's straight forward "News for a Change" as an aid to Radtke's detailed vision. However, Wallack doesn't tackle as many issues as Radtke and her text still stands alone.

Arguing that the marketing orientation can be extraordinarily useful in defining, developing, targeting, and promoting virtually any service or program, Armand Lauffer shows how the strategic marketing approach actually "increases the likelihood that professional activity will be responsive to consumer needs and societal concerns."

                              Lauffer emphasizes that the marketing approach to service delivery seeks to reconcile the often conflicting interests displayed by the various consumers, auspice providers, funders, and other publics with a stake in the system. Throughout, he strives to harmonize the traditions of community organizing, social planning, and business marketing with some of the latest, most timely and invaluable techniques available in strategic marketing today.

                              Lauffer begins by defining the marketing terminology central to program and resource development -- especially the five P's of products, publics, price, place, and promotions. Next, he introduces the concept of exchange, in which individuals and/or organizations cooperate to achieve shared or complementary objectives. He then explains that the degree to which an organization's three publics -- throughput (staff, volunteers, and members), input (providers of resources and legitimacy), and output (consumers) -- accept its programs and services determines its niche in the market.

                              The core of the book is devoted to discussing how to: establish and maintain productive exchange relationships; use a strategic marketing approach to assess, design, locate, price, budget, schedule, and evaluate a program; raise money; increase grants, contracts, and allocations power; and spotlight programs and services through print and broadcast media as well as personal appearances and presentations. A final chapter, "The Marketing Audit," demonstrates that taking stock of an organization's total marketing operation brings out the integral connections between the needs and resources of marketing, program development, and the larger environment.

                              Sharing both his own experiences and those of colleagues in a variety of human-service occupations, Lauffer includes a wealth of authentic case vignettes to illustrate successful (and occasionally unsuccessful) marketing practice. He also provides helpful chapter exercises that ask readers to apply what they've learned to their own areas of interest and concern. A challenging simulation game, Compacts II, allows them to test their complete understanding of the range of strategic marketing approaches explored in the book.
