Customer Reviews:
Overall, a Great Collection..........2006-01-30
The Complete Country Blues Guitar Book has tabs for a wide variety of blues styles, including Delta, Rag, Texas, and bottleneck. The one point that keeps me from rating it 5 stars is the CDs, one of which was defective. I contacted Mel Bay Publishing by e-mail, advised them of the problem, and they promptly sent me a replacement along with a nice apology. That issue aside, I am very pleased with the overall collection. Get this if blues is your thang...
Excellent.......2003-09-04
I haven't played guitar for about ten years, and got this book to get myself back into it. It's great, I can't put it down, and I'm actually learning the pieces!
Defintely recommended, but not for a complete beginner.
A Treasury of Country Blues Guitar Styles.......2003-07-29
Stefan Grossman has been the world authority on fingerstyle blues guitar for decades now, and this book is the biggest compendium of his work as an educator. He tabs out fifty-seven (fifty-seven!) songs in a variety of styles and tunings, enough to keep any student busy for a year or more.
This isn't so much a method book--though I taught myself to play country blues from it--as a large tab compendium with helpful tips about each song. Each song has at least one fully-transcribed verse. Many have intros and outros, and some are complete arrangements. Most of the book covers the alternating bass and ragtime traditions of the Memphis and Piedmont blues, but there are seven Delta tunes, and excellent seven-song chapter on Texas blues, and even a good number of bottleneck tunes. Most of the songs are old standards ("Crow Jane","Vestapol","Hard Time Killin' Floor") taken from the original recordings by artists like Reverend Gary Davis, Mance Liscomb, and Blind Blake.
The "handwritten" tab is large and easy to read--you'll never be able to go back to that tiny Hal Leonard/Guitar Player tab after this. There are lots of photos of old bluesmen as well as atmospheric old-South pictures from the Library of Congress collection. It's so attractive I keep it on my coffee table. The CDs feature Grossman playing the tabbed arrangements (and then some) as well as original Blind Lemon Jefferson tracks. They're listenable in their own right, even if you aren't learning the guitar!
If you're interested in pre-war blues guitar, and you already known how to play five or six chords (remember, this book teaches country blues, not guitar), this is easily the best bang for your music buying buck.

Product Description
From James Burton to Albert Lee, Brent Mason and beyond, the real sound of country guitar is one of the most sought after among today's players. Whether you're a pro eager to add to you stylistic and technical abilities, or a newcomer who's drawn to that clean, twangy guitar sound, Hot Country has something for everyone. As well as more than 150 licks, solos and backing tracks, all written out and demonstrated on the accompanying CD, Lee Hodgson offers practical advice on playing lead and rhythm guitar and enlarging your chord vocabulary. You don't need a hat, just your guitar and a passion to play some Hot Country!
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not for the feint of heart..........2007-08-17
I agree this book contains a great depth of country styles and method. The CD is the poorest aspect of the package. He plays so fast that unless you are already reasonably accomplished, forget it. Also, the CD organization is extremely poor if you need to find and repeat tracks numerous times to get what he just blazed out. I spent a day or two with it and then put it up for a while until I catch up with it. If someone was standing there offering my money back - I'd take it. However, if you are an advanced guitarist looking to learn this style, this may be perfect for you.
Everything You Need.......2005-06-10
I've gone through all the various country instruction books and none has been as thorough and useful as this one. It is geared towards guitarists who already have an above average amount of experience but the material is presented in such a clear and precise way that it all makes sense after a bit of practice. As always, there are some real flash moves that only work in a very few situations, but the vast majority of what the author presents will work on every gig you play. All the various styles, and standard licks are here. This book has everything you need to become well-versed in country guitar.
Good job Lee.......2001-08-15
This book is more geared toward the intermediate to advanced player. It really helps if you know how to count rythmes and triplets to break down the written tab. Although it's always helpfull to hear the music being played, I did not think the CD was all the much benefit. As usual, it's much easier to learn this stuff slow and work it up to speed. The author is a very fast picker and I found it hard to us the CD because he plays so fast. If you do not want to play with pick and hybrid fingers or finger picks, forget this book, most of the examples require this technique to get it to sound correct. I generally like the book, it's a good resource for stealing licks. The section on using 3rd's and 6th intervals is great for country twang. The book that has been most benefit towards my country prowess has been Albert Lee's Adavance Country Guitar. I believe this book will come in number two. If only Brent Mason would decide to write a book and focus on his country style, wow.
This book has it all.......2000-12-23
Finding material on instruction for playing country guitar is very difficult because there is just not much out there. This book is like finding a needle in a hay stack. This book runs the gamut on almost every aspect of playing country guitar. It starts you out on some simple little licks that get you sounding like a country picker right off the bat. For someone new to playing country music, you must learn how to pick [base] strings in an alternating fashion with your thumb or flat pick and pick with your middle and ring finger (also called hybrid picking). It takes some practice but that's just country. Take your time and you'll get it. Once you learn hybrid picking you'll never go back to just flat picking only - it's like a hole new world, even if you're not playing country music. Have a finger-lickn'-chickn'-pickn' great time! Keep it country!
Hot Country by Lee Hodgson.......2000-01-10
Hot Country by Lee Hodgson
Given the lack of material on this subject as compered to rock and blues, this book is a must. Each chapter is dedicated to a technique or style like the CAGED scale system or Chicken Picking and Pick Harmonics. The book contains an incredible amount of material most of which is demonstrated on the CD, although the book does follow the standard easy stuff at the front hard stuff at the back format, this is strictly not the case and it seems to jump from easy techniques to incredibly advanced techniques at the turn of a page which can be a bit off putting. But it's all here if you are prepared to work at it especially if your idea of a Hot Country Guitarist is Albert Lee or Bert Mason. Beginners may find the book a bit advanced and out of their depth but I'd advise getting it anyway.

Country Pickin': The Don Rich Anthology
ASIN: B000MUTY2I |
Product Description
This book/CD set features 25 twangy intermediate-to-advanced solos in the classic honky tonk style. If you love the sound of a twangy Telecaster guitar, you will enjoy learning the solos in this book. It is the best classic country solos book available!
This is an intermediate to advanced book for players having basic skills. However, a brave and ambitious beginner might be able to tackle the slower solos.
The solos contain many great LICKS and IDEAS that can be used by a creative onstage country guitarist.
All solos are written in TAB and standard notation, and recorded on the companion CD.
Few styles of music have enjoyed the widespread and enduring popularity of country music. Through the years, country music has developed from the rural Southern string band sound to the raw honky-tonk of the postwar period, the Nashville pop sounds of the late 50s and 60s, and finally the overly slick commercial sound of today.
The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60sbefore rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country guitar solos.
Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs.
A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. The result is an authentic sounding collection of country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed.

Book Description
With its steel guitars, Opry stars, and honky-tonk bars, country music is an American original. The most popular music in America today, it’s also big business. Amazing, then, that country music has been so little studied by critics, given its predominance in American culture. Reading Country Music acknowledges the significance of country music as part of an authentic American heritage and turns a loving, critical eye toward understanding the sweep of this peculiarly American phenomenon.
Bringing together a wide range of scholars and critics from literature, communications, history, sociology, art, and music, this anthology looks at everything from the inner workings of the country music industry to the iconography of certain stars to the development of distinctive styles within the country music genre. Essays include a look at the shift from "hard-core" to "soft-shell" country music in recent years; Johnny Cash as lesbian icon; gender, class, and region in Dolly Parton’s star image; and bluegrass’s gothic tradition. Originally published as a special issue of South Atlantic Quarterly, this expanded book edition includes new articles on the spirituality of Willie Nelson, the legacy and tradition of stringed music, and the revival of Stephen Foster’s blackface musical, among others.

Glad to own.......2007-04-01
I use this book a lot. Since I haven't had guitar lessons it's a good book because it shows the chords. I don't necessarily agree that the song selections are the "100 greatest country songs", but there are good ones included, both old and new.

This book is GREAT!!!.......2002-06-19
If you have ever wanted to learn the trademark country guitar licks and riffs from Alan Jackson's Greatest Hits, then this is definitely the book for you. In this version it includes authentic note-for-note transcriptions to such great songs as Chattahoochee, Gone Country, Summertime Blues, Midnight In Montgomery, Wanted, Here In The Real World, Home, Don't Rock The Jukebox, Dallas, Who Says You Can't Have It All, and many others! They even tabed out the awesome guitar solos that you hear on Alan's "I Don't Even Know your Name"!!! The transcriptions are not simple, but they are very accurate. If you want to learn to play more than just the guitar chords and to play these songs the correct way, then you should definitely buy this book!!!

Not quite what the blurb describes. . . .......2007-01-15
This book was described as fun for kids and there was nothing about its text or layout that was age-appropriate for the range indicated. Maybe it would be a fun gag gift for accountants, but the math and the "tricks and puzzles" inside were overly complicated in both description and instruction. Also, the layout of the book was cheap and not in the least appealing visually, and the paper was cheap stock. I intended to give this book to a child who is extremely advanced in math and it was not even appropriate for him. I ended up giving it as a gag gift to the controller at the office holiday party. Definitely would not recommend this book for young people.

Book Description
This is an updated edition of the bestselling book by Colin Shaw and John Ivens about building and delivering great customer experiences--something far too many companies neglect. The authors show that physical execution and emotional impact of customer experiences may ultimately determine customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as the commercial success of companies and brands. With the use of compelling examples and cases the authors show that this is key for all companies and organizations. In this revised edition they demonstrate that the customer experience has now become central to the agenda for many companies and organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely apllicable!!.......2007-05-21
This book helped us see the future of our company in another light. There are countless examples, graphs, and quotes that made it easy to synthesize the information and explain it to others.
I was so taken by the book, that I invited Colin Shaw (the author) to come speak to our management team. He was very down to earth and approachable.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone else looking for a real competitive differentiator.

Excellent !! well worth a look. There are so many "Business" books out there that it is hard to find something that actually works - this one does. It is full of useful information that I am sure will enhance the customer experience when put into practice.
Practical way to Building great Customer Experience.......2004-06-28
The only book I have come across which tell you not only the "what" but "how" of buiding great Customer Experience. The concept of having a Customer Experience statement is so basic , yet so powerful in getting the whole organization to be aligned towards delivering great Customer experience. The authors take you through step by step process to implement the Customer experience statement. A must read for any organization serious about building great Customer Experience.
Not insightful and not well-written.......2004-04-21
It takes a great deal of effort to write any book, even a bad one, so I hate to be excessively critical, but I found very little value in this book. Despite its intriguing title, I don't think anyone will gain from reading this book, unless they are a prospective client of the authors' consulting firm, Beyond Philosophy, and would like a peek at the vendor's approach. (There's no escaping the shadow of the authors' consultancy within these pages. I know consultants write books to get noticed, but this one is more like something you would create just so you could hand it out to clients.)
At its best, this book repeats marketing dogma. More often, though, it simply misses. You can usually count on a book like this for some valuable anecdotes, if nothing else, but even the authors' anecdotes don't always make the intended point (as near as I could tell). It really needs a substantial reorganization, starting with a framework that would help the authors decide what is important and what is trivial, and then a solid edit.
In my opinion, this book is probably not what you're looking for. For example, you'd think that a book about "Building Great Customer Experience" would at least define "customer experience." But no--the authors say that people are usually better off figuring this out for themselves. You'll be much happier, for example, with Lasalle and Britton's (2003) Priceless: Turning Ordinary products into Extraordinary Experiences.
Wonderful and Thoughtful.......2003-04-26
This book helps tie together all the parts of developing a business plan. Before I read this book, I was struggling with writing a business plan for a new business. The hardest thing for me was putting all the pieces together in a coherant structure. This book provides the missing piece that every business needs to have in order to produce results that are lasting and memoriable. GREAT FOCUSING TOOL!
