Citizen Kane
ASIN: 0299205002 |
Book Description
Walking Shadows dramatically dissects the wild, high-profile battle between newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and famous young actor, director, and filmmaker Orson Welles over Welles’s groundbreaking film Citizen Kane. In 1940 and 1941 it became the center of public controversy and scandal, especially in Hollywood where Welles’s own stark honesty and blatant self-confidence heightened the drama.
Citizen Kane portrayed the ruthless career of an all-powerful magnate bearing (not accidentally) a striking resemblance to Hearst, who immediately tried to kill the picture. John Evangelist Walsh here illuminates the conflict between these two outsize personalities and for the first time brings Hearst’s vengeful anti-Kane campaign to the fore. Walsh provides thorough documentation, supplemental notes, and an extended bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Darkness At The Edge Of Town.......2005-04-29
Hearst's involvement in the movie industry has been the subject of much recent scholarship. In a way it was bad luck for Orson Welles that the man he wound up attacking in his masterpiece CITIZEN KANE was one of the very few men with the power to avenge himself so thoroughly. For Hearst's tentacles were everywhere. John Evangelist Walsh, a veteran of history's noirish back alleys, has written interesting books before on the treason of Major Andre and the sex life of Emily Dickinson. Hearst apparently saw Welles as a kind of Major Andre and CITIZEN KANE as an attack on everything America holds dear. Incidentally, it was a slanderous, even misogynistic portrait of the talented soubrette Marion Davies, Hearst's girlfriend of many years' standing and practically his "other wife."
Almost a "third wife" was Hearst's hatchet woman--the columnist Louella Parsons who had a contract with Hearst's newspapers and a mission to destroy Orson Welles. Quickly RKO lost faith in their erstwhile "wonder boy" Welles and managed to sabotage his projects THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and IT'S ALL TRUE, along with several others he had planned, including the thriller SMILER WITH THE KNIFE and a proposed movie version of the Joseph Conrad novella HEART OF DARKNESS. Walsh is the kind of writer who will do just about anything to advance his own thesis, but here he writes crisply and cleanly about the battle between two men who were both, in different ways, quite megalomaniacal. Though the verdict is still out about who was right and who was wrong, CITIZEN KANE still remains one of the towering pinnacles of world cinema; however, the reputation of the slandered Marion Davies has emerged from the Stygian gloom into which KANE had plunged it, and she has rebounded cheerfully into the light of critical regard.

Book Description
Richard Strauss' successful conducting and composing career spanned one of the most fascinating stretches of modern German history, from oil lamps to atomic energy, from a young empire to a divided Germany. This biography covers Strauss' early musical development, his emergence as a tone poet in the late nineteenth century, his turn to the stage at the beginning of the twentieth century, the successes and misfires of the post-World War I era, the turbulent 1930s, and the period of the Second World War and its aftermath.

Wonderful read!.......2003-07-20
I had to purchase this book for an independant study in modern operas for my senior year as an undergrad. My professor is a friend of Gilliam, and I must say his writing and research is very well done. I knew nothing of Strauss, and after I was done reading the few Chapters that I had to read, I was pretty much satisfied. It was easy to follow and just a delight to read!

On Growth and Form
ASIN: 0801846595 |
Book Description
This detailed study of the different rates of growth of parts of the body relative to the body as a whole represents Sir Julian Huxley's great contribution to analytical morphology, and is still the basis for modern investigations in the field.

A Classical Book.......2007-03-18
This book has basic concepts of biology, being detailed and accurate for anyone who works with growth. Huxley brings us with a holistic vision of science. In my case, this theme is closely related to stocks identification, an essential step for fisheries management.

Menopause: A Spiritual Renaissance--What You Can Do to Empower Your Life from Someone Who's Been There and Done It

Customer Reviews:
Something to note.......2005-12-14
This book is very good, as usual from Nietzsche. I'm not going to fully review it however, but rather point out something the previous reviewers didn't. This work is in fact one of the four "Untimely Meditations"; as such it is included in all editions of that work by Nietzsche. So I strongly suggest that you buy a copy of the complete set rather than just this one.
Unique and startling.......2001-01-03
This book is different than Nietzsche's well-known major works. It does not explicitly examine the nature of morality, the master/slave relationship, or related questions. Instead, it questions the relationship of historical knowledge to life in the present. By "present", Nietzsche does not mean some specific century or decade, but rather the present we perpetually find ourselves in as human beings.
Nietzsche asks: given that we always live in such a present, why do we want or need historical knowledge? Animals live without a historical sense: they do not reflect on the past or contemplate their future -- they simply live from moment to moment in the eternal present that humans perpetually avoid. And generally, Nietzsche notes, animals seem happier than human beings: more spontaneous, more cheerful, less given to morbid and resentful states of mind.
Given these differences, should humans abandon the study of history and try to live in the present like animals? No, says Nietzsche, this relation to history is the true source of human uniqueness and achievement. The question is not "Should we study history?" but rather, "What history should we study, and in what amount?" The answer, says Nietzsche, is history that gives us a proper appreciation of life's difficulties and the struggles that have preceded us, but which nonetheless spurs us to creative action in the present. We should never study history for history's sake; rather, we should study it with a view to understanding and surpassing our present.
This is a short, powerful volume, dense with ideas but astoundingly clear.
Recommended.......2000-12-01
A great primer on the problems of history and a great introduction to a brilliant mind.
presenta el peligro que un exceso de erudión de historia.......1998-11-27
he leido 6 capítulos.

A complete guide for listening to the music of R. Strauss.......1999-08-05
Del Mar was a man who accepted a very challenging task: to show the world the importance and genius of Richard Strauss at a time when it was the fashion to dismiss the relative importance of this exceptional composer.
Del Mar's approach to this challenge helped create the great three volume work we have here, but also created a text that impairs the readers to truly put Strauss' accomplishments into perspective. Del Mar was clearly a Strauss fan, who felt Strauss was under appreciated. To best hide his impartiality, much like a father coaching a son in little-league baseball, he gave Strauss no special treatment, and at times even goes overboard to try and prove to the readers that he is a fair judge.
This approach has allowed this work to become a valued base line for studying Strauss the Composer, but also furthered the lack of credit given to Strauss in the Academic world. One gets the feeling that Strauss never entered the ranks of the other master composers such as Wagner, Beethoven, and Mahler.
Most importantly these books serve as an invaluable resource for any serious Strauss listening - all tone poems and major works are covered in great detail, with plenty of musical examples and figures. Del Mar did a very, very thorough job. The reading is fun, passionate and never dry.
Not Strauss the man, but his music as seen by a conductor........1998-02-01
As a horn player who became a conductor, Norman Del Mar wrote a three-volume study of Richard Strauss that appears to be, essentially, the notes of a conductor preparing to confront Strauss's music on the podium. It is thus excellent in understanding musical structure, the roles of motifs, the orchestration, and the literary background of the works.
At the same time, Del Mar did not in the end achieve a biography of Richard Strauss the man, as the author himself admits. I personally am still looking for a biography that would take seriously Strauss's conducting career, his career as a performer along with his wife, his income and investments, his professional associations, the fates of his wife and son, his card playing, and all the rest of the personal side.
Regarding the music itself, while Del Mar of course admires Richard Strauss greatly, he does not shy away from making judgments. When he doesn't especially admire something, he says so, says why, and lets the reader know what others have said about it as well.
Del Mar fairly consistently praises Strauss's "classical" or light-handed works. For example, the praise he gives to the music for "Le bourgeois gentilhomme" is perhaps somewhat out of proportion to that work's place in Strauss's opus.
This is not to say that Del Mar does not appreciate the romance and even the sexuality that Strauss frequently projected. On the contrary, the author plunges you into the mood of some of these moments, without ever losing perspective.
I'm afraid that he does give short shrift to one extremely important moment in Strauss's music -- the Presentation of the Rose at the beginning of Act 2 of "Der Rosenkavalier." Somehow the thunderstruck feeling of first love that Strauss's music communicates at this moment does not penetrate Del Mar. Thus, he faults Strauss (and Hofmannsthal) for not explaining how, in the second half of Act 2, Octavian and Sofie can so easily fall into complicity over dissolving the engagement with Ochs, and for not explaining why Octavian turns away from the Marschallin at the end of Act 3.
I wonder whether Del Mar may have gone out for popcorn at the start of Act 2, because when you hear the music of the two young people together at the moment of the Presentation of the Rose, you know that the Marschallin is history.
In any case, Del Mar's book is a tremendous achievement of musicianship, scholarship, and understanding. It is indispensable for studying the work of one of the greatest artists of our culture.
Be warned that non-musicians may find these three volumes tough reading!

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive introduction to the concepts, theories, and applications of pricing and revenue optimization. From the initial success of “yield management” in the commercial airline industry down to more recent successes of markdown management and dynamic pricing, the application of mathematical analysis to optimize pricing has become increasingly important across many different industries. But, since pricing and revenue optimization has involved the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques, the topic has remained largely inaccessible to students and the typical manager.
With methods proven in the MBA courses taught by the author at Columbia and Stanford Business Schools, this book presents the basic concepts of pricing and revenue optimization in a form accessible to MBA students, MS students, and advanced undergraduates. In addition, managers will find the practical approach to the issue of pricing and revene optimization invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
Basic tool for RM.......2007-06-11
One of the best tool I have read about RM, with a great organization of each topic.
Pricing and Revenue Optimization.......2006-03-11
This is an excellent book and should be in every pricing professionals library. The only critisism I could make is that the author should be very explicit with the examples and walk the reader through the techniques used in detail.
Pricing and Revenue Optimization.......2005-08-23
Pricing and Revenue Optimization fills the need for a rigorous yet accessible introduction to the field more commonly known as revenue management. The author presents key pricing decisions such as airline revenue management, markdown management, and customized pricing as constrained optimization problems. It is the only broadly accessible consistent treatment of these topics in one place. The intended audience is MBA and MS level students and managers with solid quantitative backgrounds. Linear programming, probabilistic modeling, and some calculus is used. This book neatly fills the space between the popular treatment in Cross's "Revenue Management" and the much more mathematical "Theory and Practice of Revenue Management" by Talluri and van Ryzin. The book is well written and presents plenty of real-world grounding as well as the necessary mathematics. It is written as a textbook but would also serve for any quantitatively-oriented analyst or manager wanting to know how math models can be used to improve pricing. As a textbook, it is a little short of problems and I would have liked to see chapters on forecasting and price-response estimation. It is the best available introduction to this important topic for the MBA-level student or practitioner.
