Book Description
Unsettling Scores: German Film, Music, and Ideology examines the use of classical music in film, particularly in the New German Cinema of the 1970s and early 80s. By integrating the music of Beethoven, Mahler, and others into their films, directors such as Fassbinder, Kluge, and Syberberg consciously called attention to its cultural significance. Through this music their films could reference and, in some cases, explore an embedded cultural tradition that included German nationalism and the rise of Nazism, especially during a period when German films were gaining international attention for the first time since the 1920s. Classical music conditioned the responses of German audiences and was, in turn, reinterpreted in new cinematic contexts. In this pioneering volume, Hillman enriches our understanding of the powerful effects of music in cinema and the aesthetic and dramatic concerns of postwar German filmmakers.
Book Description
Approaches to Meaning in Music presents a survey of the problems and issues inherent in pursuing meaning and signification in music, and attempts to rectify the conundrums that have plagued philosophers, artists, and theorists since the time of Pythagoras. This collection brings together essays that reflect a variety of diverse perspectives on approaches to musical meaning. Established music theorists and musicologists cover topics including musical aspect and temporality, collage, borrowing and association, musical symbols and creative mythopoesis, the articulation of silence, the mutual interaction of cultural and music-artistic phenomena, and the analysis of gesture.
Contributors are Byron Almén, J. Peter Burkholder, Nicholas Cook, Robert S. Hatten, Patrick McCreless, Jann Pasler, and Edward Pearsall.

Book Description
Herbert Bruen (1918-2000) was a pioneer in the development of electronic and computer music. He was recognized within and beyond the field of music as an eloquent and original contributor of ideas relating composition and systems theory, language and thought, performance and everyday life. Bruen wrote and spoke incisively on the function of the arts in our society: What are the social functions of "composer" and "listener"? What is the function of "time" in art? How does "communication" hasten the decay of new thoughts, and what significance does this have on creative and social acts?
The book includes lectures given for non-professionals, articles containing valuable new formulations and insights for professionals and an audio CD featuring Bruen's compositions. The book is an excellent resource for those interested in music composition, computer music, electronic music, music literature, 20th century music history and interdisciplinary studies in arts and sciences.
Customer Reviews:
An accompanying CD ably presents Brun's own musical works.......2004-06-08
Also available in a hardcover edition (0819566691, $70.00) and deftly edited by Arun Chanra, When Music Resists Meaning: The Major Writings Of Herbert Brun is an anthology of essays by electronic and computer music pioneer Herbert Brun (1918-2000). Delving into such questions as the social functions of "composer" and "listener", the use of "time" in art, how "communication" hastens the end of new thoughts, creative rebirth and reformation, and much more, these lectures offer valuable insights into the composition process for experts and non-professionals alike. An accompanying CD ably presents Brun's own musical works, in this thoughtful resource for any 20th century musician or music historian, especially those with a keen interest in modern music's evolution through the media of computers and electronics.

Book Description
Recent encounters with structuralist and poststructuralist critical theory, linguistics, and cognitive sciences have brought the theory and analysis of music into the orbit of important developments in present-day intellectual history. Without seeking to impose an explicit redefinition of either theory or analysis, this book explores the limits of both. Essays on decidability, ambiguity, metaphor, music as text, and music analysis as cognitive theory are complemented by studies of works by Debussy, Schoenberg, Birtwistle and Boulez.

Beginners Only, or even Less than Beginners Interested in Commodities.......2007-04-12
Let me start by stating that Scott Barrie does a great job converting the subject matter in this book to something that a casual, perhaps even disinterested party, can understand. I have never read any of the other Complete Idiot's Guides, but if this is how they deal with the incredibly complex subject of Commodities Trading, I wont be buying any of them again for other subjects. This was the third book in my commodities trading education. After book's one and two, this book taught me nothing. Not one thing. It does not provide enough depth on any of the multitude of subject matters that are required knowledge of the trader. However, it does touch on nearly every matter that a trader should be deeply knowledgeable about. This book was so short on details that if you were to read this book and then attempt to trade even a single transaction, it is my opinion that you would have NO IDEA what you were doing. If you are interested in Trading, a better first book is Futures 101. That will give you a better understanding if you know nothing. This book really is for people who know nothing about trading. And dont have an interest in trading either, but are interested in the subject as hobby of sorts.
Awesome Book! Highly Recommended!.......2005-11-07
Scott Barrie is absolutely incredible. This book is precise, complete, and can help anyone thoroughly understand the commodity and options markets. This is, by far, the most "user friendly" futures book I've ever read. Great information. Also, I had the fortunate experience to see Scott speak at a seminar and I discovered some highly profitable trading information that has made me quite a bit of money. Scott is highly recommended.
Nice book.......2003-03-07
If you have to start somewhere it might as well be here. This book is one of a kind. It opens up the world of futures and options perfectly. The author, Mr.Barrie, doesn't hesitate to tell you about your risks potential. He emphasizes it over and over in fact. The only thing he doesn't develop fully is why futures and options are so risky.
In my 11 years as a futures investor, broker, and author, I have come to discover that leverage is the criminal that makes futures so risky. If Mr.Barrie had spent more time developing that along with some solidly proven money management techniques I would have given him a 5 star rating.
I don't advise options but if you do try them buy this book.......2002-10-28
I personally prefer stock, bonds, and mutual funds, but you can make a ton of money trading futures and options. As the author says "People can reap huge profits, or lose their shirts".
The book gives a very good overview of all the major markets, including history of futures trading as well as how large an order should be, the typical margin put up, and how volitle of and investment a particular futures market can be, like advising corn as a good starting point and staying away from metals. I also agree with that philosophy. Another thing the author does in explaing the markets that i like is that he informs the reader of all the factors that can influence price fluctuations and how to try to time your movements into and out of the markets based on these trends. I also like that he does admit that there is a time to sell a winner and to sell a loser to cut your loses instead of going deeper in debt. sometimes it is best to get out after your first margin call.
The thing that I think makes the book most valuable are the options strategies. These also work very well with stocks and some index funds. As the author states these are very limited profit potential, but there is also very little risk. If you guess the market pretty well then there is almost no risk. My favorite of these is also the most basic the straddle option. Here you can make money if prices go up on down, but not if they remain fairly consistent. You typically purchase and at the money call ( right to buy) option and an at the money put option ( right to sell)the only risk involved is the money that is initially paid for the option. Both are purchase at roughly the same strike price so if a price swing up or down will net the option holder some money. Their are other strategies such as the bear put spread, and bull call spread as well as married options were you are actually buying futures. I personally do not like the three becasue all involve selling an options contract which theoretically can have unlimited loss potential. Unless you are very experienced and have a good track record stay away from them.
In conclusion options and futures are very risky intruments. I would advise simply playing the stocks and funds, but if you like this market i would advise buying optiosn, the most you risk there is the amount you paid for the options, and there are no margin calls, I persoanlly know someone who was almost driven to bankruptcy becasue he did not know what he was doing and got into the futures market. I must admit though that the futures market intrests me more than and other area of finance and investing.
Simple clear and thorough.......2002-08-19
I have read a few books on futures and find many gaps in basic information. As I struggle to put the pieces together, this book was a breath of fresh air. Comprehensive, including interesting history of the beginnings of these markets. Thorough, including pricing, quote info, basic info on each commodity, financial, index, etc. You need other readings about options, but the BEST basic book on commodities and futures

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for a beginner.......2006-12-16
Recently I decided to try short-term trading. Soon I realise that I need to learn more. What is going on behind bid/ask postings, how to read and interpret Level II quotes, what is Naqdaq TotalView, what advance platforms are available today, etc? So I went to local bookstore and browsed through the section. Didn't find anything satisfactory so bought this book as a temporary solution. After an hour of reading I decided to write my first book review on Amazon.com. This is simply the best book I could hope to find on the subject: precise, structured, brief yet informative, state-of-the-art information. Excellent book overall. I highly recommend this book for beginners and may be even more experienced traders that didn't keep up with the latest advances. My only complain is that the indexing is not detail enough.
MUCH Better than first edition.......2005-11-11
New edition just out. More sensible approach, and updated. Definitely worth the money, especially for new traders.
It does have a few nuggets ... How ever..........2005-09-27
This particular book is fine as a general reference on the stock market, but frankly beginners will need more concrete and to the point strategies to make it as online stock traders.
The reality is that the stock market doesn't care if you are a beginner. It will gladly take your money away if you don't know what your doing. So the bottom line is, you better be PREPARED before you even think about making your first trade.
Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.
This game is all about buying and selling according to your set ups. So the clearer your set ups are, the easier for you can be to make a profitable decision.
Hopefully some sites on the web do offer more relevant and updated stock trading information. One of those sites is Sharp Trades ( SharpTrades com )
They focus mainly on short term momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.
Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.
Good first book on day trading.......2005-03-09
If your stock market experience is limited, this book will serve as a good introduction. The material is basic and presented in an easily understood format.
0 stars if allowed.......2004-12-21
Sorry, but this book appears to have been written by a wanna be writer whose style---if you can call it that---is so blatantly irritating, condescending, and ridiculous that its facetiouseness distracts from any worth the book might otherwise provide which is minimal at best. Almost every paragraph contains a silly lead in to the next as if the writer is trying to hold your hand and help you 'get through' the material. Stuff like, 'ok, we're almost there now!' and 'I know you probably want to get right to the good stuff, but first, let's get a few of the harder points over with!....' Still with me? Both the writer and publisher should be pilloried for presuming the public is THAT dumb. You guessed it: don't buy this rubbish. And while we're at it, probably the only other book that's just as bad as this one for silliness is Toni Turner's.

Absolute Beginner, no really, I mean you have to know NOTHING about Commodities to use this book.......2007-04-12

good but not great.......2007-01-23
This book reads like the first draft of something better that will arrive in a future (no pun intended) edition. Despite the title, the book is really solely about futures; options are discussed only insofar as they pertain to futures, so the book does not really cover much about, say, options on stock or on financial derivatives (other than futures). The book is riddled with typos and errors, both mathematical and grammatical, making it difficult to follow what is happening, and it reads as if it were hastily written and sloppily edited, with frequent repeats and occasional poor organization. There are some bright moments -- occasionally the book has a really insightful definition or a clear, carefully worded example. Overall, though, you are probably better off trying a different book, especially if you want to understand options really well.
