This book is a small miracle. (Please see my review of the A&E Ruby Slippers documentary.) I think Rhys Thomas is an angel. The fact that he could research and write this book is jaw-dropping. If you love real-life intrigue, you'll get a big kick out of this book. It's an astounding story, and should be made into a film. I think much of the material here is controversial. It would be fascinating to have some linear insights on the Ruby Slippers. The phenomena of those sets of shoes and their copies (7 known sets) remain mysterious to this day. (The most used-pair was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum, the day New Orleans was crushed by Katrina.)

Rhys is simply a witness, a record-keeper and a facilitator of information. He describes his quest to find these authentic movie relics. Sadly, this becomes the story of a young man by the name of Kent, who was a costumer and collector in the '70's. In the end, Kent died, bitterly, with AIDS in his 30's. So here, you learn a bit about this young man and his passion for old Hollywood. Also the rapid deterioration of MGM. Keep in mind, during the '30's and '40's, Louis B. Mayer was one of the richest men in the nation. This is a fascinating study. I'm so stunned to think of the MGM auctions happening when I was a young woman in my 20's. What a historical loss! Rhys describes that. And here, you get the first bit of insight on how people began to place monetary value on movie collectibles. You see, the Ruby Slippers were the Holy Grail of Hollywood in the '80's. Rhys documents the greed and loss involved as individuals searched for and created replicas of the shoes. I wonder why Judy Garland never bothered to keep a pair of those shoes? It's fascinating to compare her habits and behaviors to those of some of the personalities in this book. At the end of her life, Judy was known to do things like sleep in her gorgeous designer clothes, rip them up in one night's use, etc. Like the personalities in this book, Judy's mind was distorted by the end of her life. She lived simply, out of a few paper bags.

We're Not In Kansas Anymore.......2005-12-07

This book takes the reader far beyond the flatlands of Kansas and on an incredeible tour of Hollywood Movie Memorabilia. It brings to life people and movies who are long dead but not forgotten. Each page pulls the reader in and makes them take notice just like the sparkling ruby red slippers. You can't look away and you can't stop reading. When I reached the last page I found myself, like the author, realizing that there can't be an end to the story as long as people want the slippers...and face it how can you not love the slippers??? I think the best ending of all would be if this book was updated so we could all know the path the slippers have taken since the book was first published.

Fascinating .......2005-11-14

This book is one of the most fascinating things I have ever read. The descriptions of the MGM auction and the details of the days leading up to it are priceless. As another reviewer has stated, I also think this book should be expanded/updated and re-released.... possibly as a hardcover coffee table book. Since it was written, Debbie Reynolds has publicly shown her Arabian test shoes and has admitted her dealings with Kent Warner. Also, at least one pair of slippers has changed hands again and one pair has been stolen.

Just about the most fascinating story I've ever encountered!.......2003-01-31

I first heard about this wonderful story when I caught the Discovery Channel's documentary of the same story, but they mentioned the book and I *had to have it*!

I was not disappointed; I've reread it two or three times already and am continually delighted. If you are an "OZ" fan in the *slightest*, you cannot let this one go unread!

This book is absolutely amazing!!!! If this book has taught me one thing it's this: there's more to those ruby slippers than meets the eye!!!!

Okay so I am biased. I was lucky enough to be one of the mini authors in this delightful anthology containing an assortment of poems, short stories and quirkly little pieces that never go over the 99 word mark. Written partly as a dedication to the classic novel "The Wizard of Oz" this collection of easy to read shortlets (a great way to describe each piece)is wonderfully reminisent of an age long since past. Occasionally sentimental but never syrupy, this little book is pleasure to read, and it will have you giggling and crying in the same breath.
Yellow Bricks and Ruby Slippers might not be the best seller of the century but it is a wonderful little page turner that allows you momentarily to be nostalgic and enter a timeless world full of Munchkins, witches, dogs and little girls whose friends are scarecrows, cowardly lions and tin men who want a heart... If you are a "Wizard of Oz" fan this book will pique your funny bone and remind you that you too can click your heels and know that there is no place like home.

More editing needed but has some worthwhile insights.......2005-07-10

At 253 pages the material would have better fit 150 though presumably the book would then be too short to market as a "Financial Planner's Bible". Rattiner is repetitious and shamelessly self promoting. The latter, in fairness, is probably common to the genre.

Rattiner, though, is clearly a smart guy. The chapter on using Form 1040 to uncover client financial planning opportunities was meaty and insightful. There were also quite a few other interesting tidbits buried amidst the clutter.

Valuable Tools for Experienced Advisors.......2002-10-31

This is an excellent successor to Jeff's earlier book on getting started in financial planning. There is great material, but because every reader has a substantially different background, a lot of it is not immediately applicable. But the critical issue is that SOME of the very well organized checklists and tools will be precisely what the reader needs, and needs now. Some of the Bible will be very useful later. The firm-wide self-assessment survey is a great tool, as is the model business plan.

Well-written and easy to follow.......2007-05-19

The book may have been written 5 years ago but the principles of investing still apply today. The book is detailed, easy to follow and a worthy read. Anyone interested in retiring will benefit from reading this book. I am using the book to make sure that I am ready when retirement age catches up with me.

Much Information is very out of date / no longer accurate.......2007-04-22

Much of the information is out-dated. Many of the financial products referred to have changed alot over the years. This is true particulary about Variable Universal Life Insurance, as well as Variable Annuities. These products have greatly improved over the last 5 years, and much of the information in this book does not apply to the newer products.

The author is not licensed for insurance, not securities licensed, not an investment advisor, and is not a CFP. Therefore she does not have any clients. People who just write books can write almost whatever they want, and are not held to the same standards as licensed professionals. You should be careful of the advice you get from people who only make a living by writing books and articles, and are not licensed professionals.

Lynn O'Shaughnessy's book Retirement Bible was informative and helpful as I plan for my retirement. It was in a format that even I could understand. I appreciated her help on buyer beware. I will probably hire a good financial advisor to assist and this book has educated me, so when I do interview advisors I hope they will be ready for all my questions.

Wonderful book.......2007-10-01

Sonia Michelson takes us on an amazing journey of struggle, adaptation and learning. She made the move from Los Angeles to Israel at the age of 78 to be with her beloved family and to establish her own roots in her ancestral home. The book is tightly packed with information about the events of her first year in Ofra. This little book is well written and easy to read. One is left with the desire to hear more and to partake in the joys that are the experience of her daily life.

What an accomplishment! When 70+ Sonia Michaelson left her comfortable home in West Hollywood, CA, she was fulfilling a lifetime goal: making Aliya and joining 4 of her 7 adtult children who now live in Israel.

In Home at Last, Sonia has gathered letters to friends that chronicle her first year in a West Bank town, near her children and many grandchildren. Sonia Michelson, an elderly guitar teacher from Los Angeles, moved to the small village of Ofra on the Isreali West Bank in 2005. HOME AT LAST is the story of her first year there as told through emails she sent to relatives, friends, and guitar students that she had left behind.
Mrs. Michelson's enthusiasm for the new and unexpected may have partly stemmed from the loving greetings she received from her large contingent of children and grandchildren already living in Isreal but nevertheless she describes the challenges each day brought with humor, understanding, and joy.
For anyone who has wondered what such a move might be like this book is filled with colorful descriptions. For anyone planning to move to Isreal this book could be required reading.
