Book Description
"
Morphology will in all probability be regarded by future generations as one of the major theoretical breakthroughs in the field of folklore in the twentieth century."
Alan Dundes
"Propp's work is seminal...[and], now that it is available in a new edition, should be even more valuable to folklorists who are directing their attention to the form of the folktale, especially to those structural characteristics which are common to many entries coming from even different cultures."

Ian Myles Slater on: Brilliant, But Hard Going.......2003-11-11
This is an attempt to work out the underlying structural patterns (types of characters, what they do, how they are ordered) of Russian folktales, based on classic collections made in the nineteenth-century. If you are fortunate enough to have read a large collection of such stories -- preferably in translation, not "retold by ..." -- you will soon see the point of Propp's argument. Other European, and some non-European, traditions provide an almost equally good starting point, although the examples often are not so close as to be immediately convincing. Ideally, "Morphology of the Folktale" would be bound with at least a selection of the Russian folktales Propp analyzes, but this does not seem likely to happen.
Taken by itself, however, Propp's exploration is going to seem both dry and confusing. Try to imagine a book about the five-act structure of Shakespeare's tragedies being read by someone who had never seen or read a play before, and you may understand the problem.
Although Propp's exposition sometimes seems labored, he presents a convincing case that at least some oral prose narratives are built up of a stock of situations and events which can be slightly reordered, multiplied, and otherwise complicated, but amount to a "language" (a vocabulary, grammar, and syntax) of story-telling. This puts a new light on the problem of the distribution of folktales, and how they develop variants, two of the great issues of folklore studies in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Despite its origins in a single body of oral literature, Propp's methods have been applied to other literature with known or suspected oral roots, sometimes with slightly contradictory results. I know of at least two different Proppian analyses of "Beowulf," for example. This is due at least in part to Propp's attempt to introduce fine divisions between similar plot elements, which, again, seem to work better with his source material than with other groups of stories. (And "Beowulf" has long been recognized to include elements later found in European fairy tales, so the possibility of applying Propp's structures was more intriguing than revolutionary.)
In "Feud in the Icelandic Saga" (1983), Jesse Byock reviewed efforts to apply Propp's methods to the Sagas of the Icelanders, another body of prose literature supposed to be grounded in oral techniques. He argued that a different approach is needed to their formally realistic stories about personalities, and the functioning of society; which does not diminish the validity of Propp's approach to the wonder-tale.
Bah.......2003-02-16
This book is so confusing, everyone in class think it's stupid. Bottom line: He attemps to classify tales when it is an impossible task to do, and criticizes others for trying to do what he can't even do himself.
This seminal work is excellent.......1999-09-28
This seminal work is essential for an understanding of structuralist theory and the theory of folklore. It differs from the psychological view of the folktale in its descriptive ability. This theory is based on objective description and sytagmatic conjunction and complementation. Because of that, it is more applicable and flexible than any psychological dissection. Also, two people will reach roughly the same conclusions with this method- something impossible with a psychological approach. This is excellent for anyone interested in attacking the down and dirty working parts of a narrative.
A systematic diagram of the Russian folktale........1998-12-01
This is the first work to systematically characterize and describe a corpus of folktales. It includes a list of possible plot twists, in their correct chronological order for any story, and numerous examples from actual Russian fairy tales. This translation in particular reads well and makes a point of not departing from the text's literal meaning in any significant way. I would highly recommend this work for anyone interested in folktales or oral literature in general.

Book Description
This is the first systematic study of civil law in late Imperial Russia. It shows that efforts to adjust family, property, and inheritance law to changing social and economic conditions often became intertwined with attempts to shape society in accordance with competing ideological ideals. Through a restructuring of the family's legal basis, members of the growing educated and professional strata of society in particular endeavoured to promote conflicting coneptions of authority, individuality, gender, and law. Legal reform also served for members of the emerging legal and medical professions as a way to establish their authority, often at the expense of the state administration and the Orthodox Chruch. Civil law in late Imperial Russia therefore constituted both an important medium for ideological redefinition and a field of battle for those seeking to reform, to overthrow, or to defend the ancien regime. Because this battle extended into the state bureaucracy, legislative change proved extremely difficult. Newly empowered by the 1864 judicial reform, the judiciar responded to legislative inaction by not merely adapting the law, but also by promoting an ideal of the family whose values and principles challenged those underlying the autocracy. Professor Wagner's detailed and scholarly analysis of these issues offers many important insights into cultural attitudes and political structures in late Imperial Russia.

Book Description
This book explores the immense influence of the composer Richard Wagner on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian writers, musicians and artists. It contains a history of the production of Wagner's works in Russia and the Soviet Union (by directors including Meyerhold and Eisenstein), an account of Wagner's visit to Russia in 1863, and a detailed investigation of the impact of his music and ideas on the Russian Modernist movement. The last two chapters explore the fate of Wagner's works after the 1917 Revolution, when he was first hailed but then reviled, and finally rehabilitated during the years of glasnost.

Book Description
The U.S. government spent, on average, $300 million a year during the 1990s to support science and technology (S&T) cooperation with Russia. This document details U.S. government spending on cooperative S&T activities with Russian partners. RAND collected and analyzed data at the project level and surveyed agency officials about specific projects and programs. These data were aggregated by spending into categories created by RAND. The report thus provides an analytic, cross-agency overview, presenting a broad picture of the U.S.-Russia S&T relationship between 1994 and 2000. The U.S. government1s projects with Russia have a slightly different pattern than can be observed with other scientifically advanced countries: They are more binational in character, less collaborative, more technology-based, less of a shared effort, and dominated more by spending in aerospace applications. Reports from scientists working with Russian counterparts indicate that the United States is gaining significant scientific benefit from this joint collaboration. Although funding for the U.S.-Russia S&T relationship seems to have dropped in 2001, there has been a revived interest within the U.S. scientific community in working with Russia and an increase in the number of projects being considered.

Customer Reviews:
A good adventure, easy to follow.......1999-05-28
Maybe I simply have VERY demanding players, but they seemed to enjoy it, simply not as much as other adventures I've them through. The sounds on the CD, while very nice for mood are all very short. The repeat option only works if you have a CD player thats easy to get to while you're playing so you don't hear the "turn the page" sound when the sound is about to repeat. If you have the time, then you can edit the tracks to loop on a mixer, and then copy them onto a CD. Unfortunately I don't have access to one, and it took me away from the moment of the adventure trying to use the sounds. Also, the first part of the CD is simply an introduction to a decent story line, which really just ends up being something to listen to. My players lost interest in the intro, I guess they'd rather hear it from my mouth. For the most part, we ended up dropping the CD and playing the adventure itself, which was very enjoyable. I'm not wanting this review to sound negative, because the adventure itself was nice, I just thought I should talk about the CD part since this is the only Ravenloft adventure that I've seen with that addition.
THE MOST ATMOSPHERIC RAVENLOFT ADVENTURE EVER !.......1999-04-19
This damn thing has everything that will make any DM and PC go mad! - and not only... You will evoke my words when you will hear the CD playing. It has everything that a good adventure needs: spooky background sound tracks and FX, nice plot and senario, mood setting, nonstop terror, a great range of beasts to haunt you forever, it is adaptable for any setting (even if the DM knows nothing about Ravenloft), lots of tragedy -lets see how really strong you are, mystery... and more, and more that cannot be described with simple words. A MUST FOR TRUE AD&D PLAYERS.BUY IT! BUT...BEWARE-
Excellent, tear jerking, adventure, Challenging yet Touching.......1998-01-16
For the DM it will jerk a tear in your first reading...for the players - they will have to work through it - then afterwards they will be a bit in confusion saying "Did he???? Oh that's terrible!!!" Anyone with a heart will feel the tragedy of this game

Customer Reviews:
Straight to the Point........2006-07-17
Levine gives an impressive amount of advice, which if followed will increase your value to an organization substantially. Many of the ideas presented seem elementary in concept, yet are often overlooked by the majority of the workforce.
I personally enjoyed the "Straight to the point" format, which Levine takes throughout the book. He explains his point and reasoning then moves on without excessive elaboration.
I will definitely review this book in the future to remind myself of the simple ideas and concepts that can increase my value substantially.
Powerful and Insightful.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be both practical and insightful. The author has managed to strip away all of the "consultant speak" that you often find in books like this, and replaced it with concrete examples of leadership. I have also had the opportunity to attend a seminar conducted by the author and it reinforces many of the fundementals discussed in the book, as well as introduced new concepts. I recently purchased this book for a number of my employees and others I mentor within my organization. I highly recommend this book.
One of best books I've ever read.......2005-06-06
At the risk of sounding like I'm gushing, this is honestly one of the top 3 books I've ever read. My husband's boss recommended it to all of his managers. He had it laying on the counter for weeks unread, so I read it. I was so engrossed, I finished in one night and took away MULTIPLE tips that are both applicable in the business world AND your personal life. I bought my husband a replacement copy so my highlighting wouldn't annoy him and encouraged him to read right away. Although he's not a big book fan, he too took many tips away from the book.
It was just short of life-changing for me. There are actually more than 6 tips too -- there are sub-tips for each of the fundamentals which I found more helpful than the primary 6. On the personal side, it helped me cope through the death of my grandmother and get ready for my wedding. On the business side, it reinforced some principles I had which MY managers questioned, and gave me the courage to leave my job and apply those principles as well as new ones in a new job which I am much more happy with.
I agree with one of the other reviewers that you should replay/pull this book out again after reading to refresh on ideas, especially in new situations. If you don't get anything out of this book, I'd like to meet you as you must be quite a sage.
Quick, important lessons for personal success.......2005-06-04
The 50-70 lessons in this book may be overly simplistic for some readers.
However, I found them to be very refreshing and energizing. They outline very important fundamentals of personal business success, and I used a lot of these lessons to organize/prioritize/improve.
Levine put together a list of lessons learned in his career and make recommendations. These lessons are true factors of success. You can't be successful when you don't follow these principles; hence experienced, successful managers already know them, or most of them.
As recommended in the book though, it is very beneficial to "replay the tape", and spend a few hours reflecting on what you have learned. That's exactly what the book does.
I already knew most of the lessons, but still found it a very, very useful opportunity to "replay the tape" and go over important business principles.
I used principles in this book to set new objectives, and improve at work. I also realized that I knew some of these important lessons but didn't apply them simply by lack of focus or time. The book does a great job at bringing these lessons top-of-mind.
I always listen carefully when a successful executive tells me why he has been successful, and what lessons he learned in the business marketplace, and I think you should do the same.
The book reads very easily, and goes straight to the point. I highly recommend it.
Clarity in Success and Fundamentals!.......2005-04-03
Stuart Levine first clearly demonstrates why the most effective business leaders are not out of touch with day-to-day activities but are deeply involved with all aspects of business fundamentals. For that purpose, Levine convincingly analyzes why adding value is important to any companies both large and small. He then examines the other fundamentals that leaders must use to design, install, and operate effectively the people, strategy, and operations processes within their organization and their career. Those fundamentals are the distinctive modus operandi of execution-driven leaders, a culture that thrives on accountability and links rewards to performance, and the selection of the right people for the right jobs. To his credit, Levine has a jargon-free laser focus in reviewing the stumbling blocks that underlie the execution gap in those fundamentals. He indeed illustrates each of those fundamentals with relevant examples from their practice that makes it very enjoyable to read. He then explores the people, strategy, and operations processes that are built on the above-mentioned foundation for business excellence. Any leader aspiring for success and excellence can indeed find an enduring source of inspiration in that reference book.
