Book Description
This book analyzes 116 films distributed throughout the United States over nearly 75 years, to construct a theory, grounded in cultural studies and critical pedagogy, of curriculum in the movies. The portrayal of teachers in popular motion pictures is based on individual, rather than collective, action and relies on codes established by stock characters and predictable plots, precluding meaningful struggle. These conventions ensure the ultimate outcome of the screen narratives and almost always leave the educational institutions—which represent the larger status quo—intact and powerful. In addition to an expanded list of films informing the analysis, this revised edition features two new chapters: one on gay teachers in recent films and another on principals in the movies. To interrogate "the Hollywood curriculum" is to ask what it means as a culture to be responsive to films at both social and personal levels, and to engage these films as both entertaining and potentially transforming.

A Great Start for Everyone........2006-07-02
This DVD and book set is a great combination for beginners. The DVD goes very slowly through the process of learning the proper form. Then leads you right into forming notes. The book works right along with the DVD. My daughter will be way ahead of the game when her classes start.
A much better book is Learning How to Play the Flute........2005-10-31
I bought this along with a book called Learning How to Play the Flute, which I like much better. The Hal Leonard book has fewer songs to play. I just watched the DVD and it's quite funny! Very dated and not helpful. The instructor onscreen just goes into too much picky detail and breezes through the notes too quickly. There's no way you could learn how to play the flute just by watching the DVD! You really need to practice from a book. There is also a CD but I haven't played along to it yet.

Great first book.......2006-06-04
This is a great first book for beginners of all ages.The musical selections are sophisticated enough to allow beginners to experience the joy of actually playing music right from the start.
The approach to both rhythms as well as learning fingering is brilliantly cumulative- starting with 3 notes, there are little tunes at the very beginning. Students especially love the duets.
My only complaint is that the section on E Major comes very soon.For my teaching, I just skip this section and return to it when the student has a bit more experince navigating sharp key signatures.

Nice Selection - Diverse and well organised.......2007-09-17
I bought this book along with numerous others to introduce my 8 yr old daughter (pianist) to ensemble playing. The pieces are well selected, simple - inermediate, great for sight reading material, and also evening entertainment. I find she is increasingly eager to sight read a couple duets after dinner rather than perform one of her new Solo sonatas for us.
The book has proved to be well worth the investment. High Recommendation!!

This release in the Franklin First Readers series is based on the Franklin TV story "Franklin's Family Treasure," written by Patrick Granleese. The story is adapted by Sharon Jennings into a Level 2 Kids Can Read book.
Franklin finds a tin flute while searching through the basement. He can't play it very well and so he decides to trade it away, not realizing what an important treasure it is. This leads to a series of comic misadventures in which Franklin finds that the flute has been traded all over the place. He tries desparately to get it back after finding out from his father that it's a family treasure. The illustrations look mostly like what you see on TV,
This is a simple retelling for young readers and while I still feel that the dialogue isn't entirely natural, the story is preserved well enough that I don't mind. The images look mostly like the TV show, except there are a lot of individual character pictures with no background images.

The book is intended for both individual and group tuition, many of the pieces contained can be played as solo, duets, solo with piano, duet with piano.
The accompanying CD contains all the numbered pieces.

Movin' up.......2006-05-13
This was the text required for my personnell management class. (200 level) I have the Bohlander 13th ed. which is a better text, being better organised. But after going through this book I liked it as well. The last chapter on international HR issues was especially helpful. I have adapted the expatriate worker technoques to address interdepartmental issues in my organization. I understand there will be a new edition out in June 2006. Perhaps it will be better organized.

This book contains the basic principles that any HR or General Manager (especially in the US) is supposed to know.
I have been using this textbook as a guide for my MBA studies.
I found it very useful in that it clearly explains and organizes almost every important topic about HR management. It gives practical clues on the kind of considerations a manager needs to be aware in day-to-day operation.
I used this book to find basic, straightforward ideas about HR principles and how this function is changing in the era of globalization. This way, I could use it to organize my own ideas, and if needed, using the enclosed bibliography, I could go to more specialized books on a particular topic of interest.
