The Complete Films of Alfred Hitchcock.......2006-06-29
This is a perfectly respectable entry in the Citadel Press "Complete Films of..." series. If you love Hitchcock films (I do) this is a basic bedrock reference element in your film-book collection. It is not "original" and does not contain any spectacular insights (if you want an entertaining Hitchcock analysis, see, e.g.,Camille Paglia on The Birds). However, it does have kind of a nice balance in that the authors acknowledge that The Master can make a mistake once in a while (Torn Curtain? Stage Fright?), unlike some super-reverential, adoring authors who will praise anything The Master does (did). I give this four stars instead of five because it is workmanlike but not brilliant.
A great book for new fans and veterans alike!.......2004-04-17
For any new Hitchcock fan or even a veteran fan for that matter, The Complete Films of Alfred Hitchcock is a must have book that provides much insight to the movies of Alfred Hitchcock.
The book is very organized, set up in chronilogical order, ranging from 1922-1976. It is also divided up into eras; The Early Years, Becoming the Master of Suspense, The Selznick Years, The Technicolor, Vista-Vision and 3-D Years, The Television Interlude, and the Mature Years. Every movie that Alfred Hitchcock made is in this book ranging from his silent era to Family Plot. The information provided on all movies includes the title, year it was released, cast, summary, and behind-the scenes details and pictures (all black and white) from that film (each film averaging 5-6 pages). The Complete Films of Alfred Hitchcock also includes his televisions series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. The book concludes with a list of all awards and honors that were given to Hitchcock for his most creative work, and a list of every cameo appearance he made in his films.
This book does not come from an ameteur film buff. The Complete Films of Alfred Hitchcock is co-authored by Robert A. Harris, one of the two men responsible for restoring Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rear Window to the most prestine condition, so he is very informed about Hitchcock and his films.
Now, if you want more information on Alfred Hitchcock himself such as his life and family, then this should be used as a supplemental, as his biography is very brief in this book. But if you are interested in the art of Hitchcock and want to find out all the movies he made, then this book is for you. This book is easy to read, not overwhelming. It is one that can and will be read over and over again. The illustrations and insight help you to better understand Hitchcock's style and motives throughout his film career.

Presumptuous But Good.......2005-08-18
How can any little book presume to be 'complete' when it comes to Alfred Hitchcock?
He practically invented a cinematic language, used his commercial success to at once deflate pretense in others and experiment most boldly with cinematic form, and, in the process, scared the pants off us.
What is complete in this book? Each film is given its own section, which concludes with a "Final Analysis" section. Here's a quick cut from the final "Final Analysis" [Family Plot]:
"Hitch's last project was the most important one he ever undertook, for trying to get this spy story to the screen allowed him to entertain the fantasy that he was both still working and well enough to work, despite evidence to the contrary."
Complete? Even in the last sentence, the authors admit that death cut off what could have been even more from a great twentieth century artist.
Completely Wonderful.......2002-07-16
I see that the other reviewers have pretty much said all there needs to be said about this book and I doubt I will say anything new here. All I want to emphasize it that this is truly THE book to get for a quick, easy, complete understanding of Alfred Hitchcock's movies. I have read other,longer, deeper books on his films which were very good, yet this one is nice when you are new to Hitchcock or just do not have the time to devote to much reading. These authors have a good sense of humor as well, and it always is fun to read a book where you can get a few laughs. They have some good trivia in the book, spotlights on certain Hitchcock actors,a few pages of pictures showing some poster art and movie stills, and they tell you where to find Hitch in the movies where he had cameo appearances. Hitchcock's movies are among my favorites, and this book is among my favorites about them. Get it and read it, you won't be disappointed.

After having read this book from stem to stern I would recommend it to new Hitchcock fans and more experienced fans alike. For the new fan it offers a clear synopsis of each film as well as offering many interesting points to look for. For the more experienced it makes for a convenient "turn to" source so as to better avoid the mountains of heavy, sometimes overly self satisfied observations that many resources tend to become, thereby saving wading through chapter upon chapter in order to reach simple facts.
I must respect the authors for their understanding that an enjoyment of film does not require a degree. I always commend a person for having the ability to transfer complicated observations in the simplest of English without the use of parables and without patronizing tones. Paul Condon and Jim Sangster have managed just that and not without the occasional bit of side splitting humour. Even if you are not watching the films in question it is more than a worthy read. That said, it may help to be familiar with some English terms such as "send up" as the average American does not know what it means to send something up so may be left wondering.
However, with the authors sardonic senses of humour being clear I would have liked to have seen further elaboration of the "goofs" section. There are so many Hitchcock bloopers worthy of a mention. I am certain it was a deliberate omission (perhaps for the next book) but nonetheless I was left wishing that they had made note of the obvious ones if only to give the new viewer that added bit of fun and sport.
Despite taking umbrage at the use of the phrase "just a smathering of dull brunettes" ahum, I would gladly purchase any other offerings from either or both authors and very much look forward to a second volume of "Complete Hitchcock," contradiction that it may be. Hopefully with an eye to the slip ups and perhaps more production details (locations, circumstances, first hand anecdotes, etc.) If that isn't a hint to get writing I don't know what is : )
In short I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would not only recommend it but have already bought several other copies for friends and family. Enjoy.
Complete in every way.......2001-11-20
As a novice Hitchcock fan, I find this book extremely informative. It gives a good summary of all of Hitchcock's movies as well as a good analysis of the films. It also includes where Hitchcock can be spotted in the movies and little tidbits on the actors and actresses who were casted in his movies as well as behind the scenes information. I would recommend this book for those who are starting to discover Hitchcock.
A great place to start.......2000-04-21
I bought this book sight-unseen, knowing absolutely nothing about it (which is why I'm now writing this review; maybe you'll be more willing to try it once you know what it has to offer). It's a thorough, well-nigh encyclopedic look at Hitch's work, with a brief chapter (averaging about 4 pages) on each major film. The chapters include complete cast and credits --including "uncredited cast" -- plus a synopsis, and sundry comments on each film under such headings as "cruelty to
animals," "mysogyny," "ice maidens," "roots," and a "final word" with a critical appraisal including a rating on a scale of 1-10. While examination of each film is necessarily brief, it's quite thorough and absolutely chock-full of cool trivia. Every now and then there are sidebars on stars with whom Hitch worked; there's also an amazing appendix listing every single episode from Hitch's TV shows (not just the ones he directed -- but ALL OF EM). Only negatives: could use an INDEX, plus I noticed several careless spelling errors (actors' names and so forth) of the type that tend to make one a bit suspicious. On the whole, however, this is THE place to start for the Hitchcock novice, and a real treasure trove for the seasoned fan like me. Highly recommended.

great resource for Sunday School teachers.......2007-01-29
This book has been a great resource for me as a Sunday School teacher. My students used to complain about memorizing their verses each week but the word find aspect has made it more fun. Not only do they have to read the verse over and over while finding each word, which helps them commit the verse to memory, but they don't feel like it's such a job so they are more likely to try it. 99 word searches are included plus additional puzzles for several verses. The index is very helpful and I use it to make sure the puzzles I assign match the books of the Bible we are reading. The index lists all the verses of the Bible which are included in the word find puzzles, in the order in which the books occur in the Bible. Clues under each word find tell the children what to expect, like if words may be hidden backwards or diagonally. There are even a few word finds which list names of the books of the Bible and children are asked to write them down in order. Secret messages and crossword puzzles which build upon the verse done in the word find add to the fun. Solutions to all puzzles are in the back.
In short, this has been a very worthwhile purchase. I use it every week and the kids love it.

Refreshing, global, real.......2006-08-16
One is intrigued early on to read Harvard University's Dean Williams categorize much of what passes today for "leadership" as a "preoccupation with dominance," and not authentic, transformative, long-lasting influence. The book just gets better from there.
Offering a refreshing global perspective derived largely from personal experience, the globe-trotting Williams proposes that the proper function and purpose of leadership is to be wisely adaptive (flexible) to the difficult realities of a given organization's most pressing challenges -- the primary threats or opportunities that must be confronted in order to progress. Adaptive Leadership styles contemplate and correspond to Activist, Development, Transition, Maintenance, Creative, and Crisis modes.
Highly readable and highly useable (typical of Berrett-Koehler publications) material for those charged with leading organizations... which may simply include one's own family.

No quick fixes in this book, but instead practical tools to enable people to focus on what Williams calls 'real leadership'. A unique thesis, excellently written. Real substance, not empty management speak and psycho-babble. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Decidedly a book worth buying!.......2005-12-03
This book debunks popular leadership notions of the strong visionary charismatic individual who stands head and shoulders above others leading his followers to victory.
Dean William's premise is that at the end of the day a group of people themselves need to confront their reality and themselves contend with conflicting demands on their ingrained values, habits and practices. This is easier said than done of course. The role of someone exercising true leadership is to help the group analyze it's challenges (and it shows how to do so) and help them come to terms with attitudinal shifts they may have to make to respond to these challenges. It provides an excellent framework to analyze context specific leadership challenges as well as the tussle between a groups feeling, the barriers to progress in exercising leadership and potential rewards should progress be achieved.
It goes to the core of the leadership matter and explores issues with examples across the private enterprise, politics, non profits and the public sector. The book is replete with colorful anecdotes, topical and historical examples and news items which help to intuitively clarify the context and challenges of leadership. In order to illustrate concepts Williams examines characters and contexts from popular movies that many of us may have seen (Gandhi, Lawrence of Arabia, the Fog of War, The Last Samurai etc) through the prism of his framework. For me this helped to do away with much of the jargon one sees these days in the academic literature on leadership.
`Real Leadership' does not stop at just analysis and interpretation. It also provides valuable practical tools and strategies for one to actually do something about it.
Overall an excellent read and decidedly a book worth buying.
Best leadership book.......2005-11-07
This book was so inspirational and useful for me. I am senior manager and I have no doubt my leadership will improve because of this book. Williams's way of distinguishing real leadership from counterfeit leadership is novel and groundbreaking. It really hits what's going on in my organization. But the book also helps you to interpret the quality of the leadership in the country. Are they real leaders or counterfeit leaders? What a great question. The stories he presents are engaging and illuminating in regards to the principles of great leadership. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making a difference in their organization or community. It is very different from all the other books out there.
The leading leadership book!.......2005-10-17
Dr.Williams gets it right. This book gets favorable reviews from people like Lee Kuan Yew, former Prime Minister of Singapore and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland- and I can see why. I'm on Organizational Behavior student who has read many a leadership book. This one stands out from the rest. This book instills a rare grace and brings humanity back into being a leader. A Real Leader is not just someone who is good at bossing people around. Great read, and I believe will become part of University curriculums.
