Put this in your back pocket the next time you're cruising the cantina in Mos Eisley or hanging out on the Executor's bridge with Vader. Using actual footage from all three Star Wars movies, this mini-sized guide is packed with both big names and bit players. Can't remember which bounty hunter has it in for Wookiees? No problem. Forgot whether it was Biggs or Wedge who survived till Jedi? It's in there. Far from comprehensive but still a lot of fun, this handy reference is a prize for any fan. --Paul Hughes

Book Description
Jack Kerouac, who died in 1969 at the age of forty-seven, is renowned as the father of the "beat generation." His eighteen internationally acclaimed books -- including "On the Road, Doctor Sax, The Subterraneans, " and "Lonesome Traveler" -- were important signpost in a new American literature. Here, in "Mexico City Blues, " his only collection of poetry, his voice is as distinctive as in his prose; it roams widely across continents and cultures in a restless search for meaning and expression, giving the verse the unique qualities found in America's most distinctive contribution to music.
Customer Reviews:
Dropping names in rhythm.......2003-08-07
Good men who live have karma of a dove. It is 242 choruses, 242 poems. As is everything written by Kerouac, it is autobiographical. How can Mexico have a positive association in Beat history when William Burroughs killed his wife there in a William Tell experiment? Anything by Kerouac was edited and promoted by Allen Ginsberg and for that reason alone a book of poems with Mexico in the title is of interest.
Thinking of comfortable thoughts is what modern society has branded loafing is a line in one of the poems. Zen provides much of the impetus for the collection of poems. Kerouac's work manages to create an atmosphere of tropical vegetation and light. The work is free-form and jazz-like.
Automatic writing? Well, maybe not automatic writing precisely. Certainly the word-play and the fluidity remind the reader of Gertrude Stein. (Mention Gertrude Stein and here we are at chorus 31.)
I like the prose better, but I like the idea of the book and the arrangement. The Beats stood for blessedness and freedom. MEXICO CITY BLUES is an appropriate manifestation of Beat ideology. Fifty first Chorus says America is a permisible dream, a Whitmanesque expression.
This is a celebration of other people. I count Gregory Corso, William Carlos Williams, Oscar Wilde, Alexander Pope, Benjamin Franklin, William Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, the aforesaid Gertrude Stein, Charley Parker, Nin and Ma, Pa or Leo Alcide Kerouac, brother Gerard, Thurber, Baudelaire, Jolson, Miles, Sarah Vaughn, Chagall, Whitman, Melville, Mark Twain, Einstein, Plato, Moses, Aristotle, Joe Louis, Spinoza, James Huneker, Alfred Knopf, H.L. Mencken, David, Picasso, Jesus, Proust, Freud, Glenn Miller, Allen Ginsberg, St. Francis, Siddhartha, Virgin Mary.
Great way to get into Kerouac's poetry.......2002-08-26
I have been a Kerouac fan for a long time, but it was a couple of years after reading most his novels that I was able to get into his poetry. "Pomes all sizes", for example, sat unread on my bookshelf for some time. "Mexico City Blues" is what really turned me on to his poetry and made me able to appreciate it. I was able to go back and read his other petry with new eyes. This book is fantastic. Read it out loud to yrself, the man had a natural knack for rhythm. Great book.
One long, magnificent, riff of the written word...........2002-06-10
I remember when I first stumbled across this book in the early 90's- it was like Christmas came twice that year. You see, I had thought that I had read absolutely everything published by Kerouac, prose and poem. I didn't know this existed, Wow! It is like one long, magnificent blues or jazz riff of the written word. It is a true blues composition because it has genuine soul. The more I think about it, it just might be the best thing that he ever did.
I know this is going to sound outrageous, but the only comparable book of American poetry I can even think of comparing this to would be Whitman's _Leaves of Grass_. Whitman and Kerouac both sang of the same grass roots, mystical, America. And it's still out there, if you shake your mind free of the preconceptions and the [junk]....
Spontaneous Bop Prosody.......2001-02-10
It took me a while to get beyond the Beat myth and see these poems for what they are--some of the most joyful, goofy and affecting writings of the last century. Jack wrote all 242 choruses--one per notebook page--over six weeks in 1955. His improvised word-jazz was at its peak; the poems are fresh and spontaneous but rarely sloppy (try it yourself if you don't believe me). The Buddhist leanings are a little simple-minded, but simplicity is part of the point. In layout and verbal inventiveness Jack's more experimental than most poets writing today. He combines a love for made-up words and language as pure sound with a lyrical directness that you find more often in pop songs than modern poetry. Hearing Jack read some of these on the Steve Allen record made me realize how rare a thing his poems achieved: sentiment, experiment, tenderness, peace. A moving companion to On the Road.
American Mexican Jazz Rumba..perfect cocktail..!!.......2000-09-10
a mix of cultures... musical styles.. not to say of alcohol, morphine, etc... Jack fell sick on his trip to Mexico city, and he's looking for healing, salvation- i believe he found it, with all the shots of morphine he received at the hospital , with the mexican pulque and tequilla , and other substances .. regardless it is a masterpiece of poetry. play some "bird" in the background and enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-03-08
I've looked at many books to improve my improvising skills. I learned more from this book than all of them put together.
A useful and enjoyable tool.......1999-07-07
I have been using this and the Blues Comping Styles for Jazz Guitar at the reccommendation of my guitar teacher and have found both books to be informative and useful. I am relatively new to guitar playing and have learned some difficult techniques at a rapid pace. My compliments to the author.
Musical AND logical........1999-07-03
"All Blues Soloing..." takes you step by step in an easy to understand, logical progression. The writing is clear and not abstruse. Each solo is an excellent example which makes the point of the written section but is also a beautiful, short musical piece which doesn't sound forced and is fun to play (which you can do along with the accompanying CD, very helpful for those who get the rhythms better by listening).

Great Book.......2007-05-13
This book is a great guide not only for begginers but also for professional singers, it helps you to know your body and how does it work when you sing, following the instuctions of this book you can certanly become a better singer.
Excellent Primer.......2006-09-07
This little primer is an excellent overview of the physiological aspects of breathing for singers. Even though this was written with choruses in mind, I have found it useful both as a professional singer and as a helpful tool as I teach my own voice students. Barbara is very clear both with her language and her diagrams; the mystery of breathing ceases to be a complete mystery! Barbara is an expert at "body mapping" and conveys her considerable knowledge and insight well in this little book.

Even chess legend Bobby Fischer occasionally lost matches, and his rare defeats offer valuable lessons for ordinary players. This intriguing collection, compiled by a noted chess master, features comprehensive text-and-diagram analyses of 61 of Fischer's losing games. Highlights include "the losing moment," the move at which each game was beyond saving.
Customer Reviews:
Other Books.......2007-09-03
Ok, so for basically everybody this is not possible. The catchy title is of course used to draw you in, and get you to have a look at it.
In actuality, it is an analysis of the games where Fischer actually lost, and it attempts to instruct you in the game through the use of these particular examples.
dream on, it has kept us playing chess... ;-).......2005-02-28
Everyone wants 5 minutes of fame at least once in his/her life. To be able to beat the champion in any category is a dream come true. Until the time Fischer forfeited his chess title, he had been considered the most fearsome player since Tal. With win/draw ratio of 2/1, he is the most dangerous player (as Mednis mentioned in the book, the ratio 1/1 is already very awesome.) Mednis took the 61 Fischer's losses since Fischer becoming the U.S. champion at fourteen, and grouped into four significant periods during Fischer's career. Then he created 8 tables to show the statistics on:
1) How mush Fischer lost with White/Black pieces
2) Who had better records on Fischer
3) (Where) which countries had plus scores against Fischer
4) Why Fischer lost
5) What openings Fischer had problem with
And on the last table, Mednis listed the games in chronological order (when) Fischer lost them.
The stories begun of each part were insightful. The explanation begun and analysis during each game were good. The author now is a GM; he wrote the first edition (when he was an IM) after Fischer announced his retirement from chess (1974). Mednis is qualified to write the book and got fame when he beat Fischer one (1) game in 1962. This second edition from Dover, Mednis included an addition of the 1992 rematch between Fischer and Spassky. Fischer is still the better player, however comparing to the present tough competition Fischer would have to work really hard to maintain the expectation. Even so, he is still better than 95% of us (the chess mortals). (I guess, our chance to win is to wait until Fischer is 90 years old and he gives a 128 table simultaneous exhibition, and we remember to bring a portable Deep Jr. along.)
Great book - no thanks to DanJJ's review.......2004-03-08
Sorry DanJJ, but you need to read your chess history before posting such a review. Fischer wasn't the defending champion, Spassky was. And Fischer won the title off Spassky.
I am at 919 trying to break a 1000.......2002-01-18
Bobby Fischer is probably the greatest and most influential chess player the world has ever seen. Being only 14 when he won his first US championship. My dad recalls when Fischer won the world title in 1972, when he returned to college from summer vacation everyone was playing chess. That showed Bobby's influence on the nation.
How to beat Bobby Fischer is a great collection of games in which fischer was simply outplayed. You would think there wouldn't be many but there are well over 50 games that are fully annotated with commentary.
Although this resourceful chess study tool contains many lectures on Fisher's weaknesses it contains a detail account of Bobby's childhood to when he completely disappeared from the chess world.
The greatest game Fischer ever played (and lost) was one against Boris Spassky in the world championship in Iceland. Fischer played Black as the defending champion. The game opened with a Nimzo Indian Defense (Pawn bishop and knight formation) , Spassky had an Eye on the Title. Although Fischer lost on a careless error it was a very suspenseful match. At around the 20th move Fischer stood up and ordered the spectators out of the auditorium. Bobby went on to lose the title in the match and thus disappeared from the chess world.
I received this as a gift from my dad when I first started to study chess and play competitively. The strange thing is that I never read it until recently. I feel that this book is a necessary addition to any chess library.
Learning about Bobby Fischer!.......2000-04-30
Who is he?What's so special about him?Where is he from? These are all questions we ask when it comes to Bobby Fischer. He is a man!A very smart man, that has a massive memory, and for some reason lives in a chess world.Bobby Fischer was capable of seeing moves in the blink of an eye!He could see ahead 3 moves within 2 sec and up to 7 within 5 sec,he also knew what to do to break a defense. He had a mind of a genius ,the memory of a computer, and the eyes of an Hawk.Born in Chicago on Mar 9 1943,learning to play chess at age six,Fischer took 6 years to become a "master".At age 12 Fischer was played 12 members of his chess club and won all 12 games.
Not only did he have a sharp mind but he could replay games move by move that he had played years earlyer with his opponents. He also has what any one would think to be the highest IQ the world of chess as ever seen.

Improve the Value of Your Home up to $100,000.......2007-01-19
Bob Irwin is an excellent resource for information on buying, selling or maintaining a home.
His ideas are well tested. His experience shows.
I would recommend any of his books.
Common sense building of a home's equity.......2003-03-21
Offering "50 surefire techniques and strategies" to help improve the value of one's home, Irwin utilizes common sense to help owners decide where it is best to spend their money on their homes. With the recent real estate run-up (especially where I live in Southern California), the best investment we can make is in the very place we live. While I don't plan to sell in the near future, I always want to be sure my home could be ready for a sale at any time, just in case. Irwin gives dollar-sign guides as to how much value an improvement could help increase the price you could eventually ask for your property. Although very little in this book was new to me, I highly recommend it for folks who are not very sure about how to increase the value of their homes. Although there were several suggestions I questioned (especially the value he gave to some improvements and how little he valued other improvements), I believe that he used sound judgment to guide the reader. I plan on utlizing several of the improvement ideas in my own home!
It might be right for you?.......2003-02-20
The idea for such a book IS a good one. The ideas are certainly sound..... I live in a newish(6yrs) 6000+ sq ft house, with a neighborhood association, good school district(etc) and felt that this book would NOT apply to my market.... however it could be useful for someone that lives in an urban or older neighborhood.... where a house might need curb appeal or sprucing up.... the thought of adding value to a sale is always appealing no matter what the size of your 'estate' ... no matter how deep or thin your pockets are! It is always a challenge to make the most of what you have.
