Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need
ASIN: 1581150628 |
Book Description
Written from both psychological and real-life perspectives, this provocative book can help experienced as well as aspiring screenwriters as they navigate the bumpy road to career security and success.
The book combines practical knowledge of the industry with insights into the emotional roadblocks that writers must overcome to succeed. Thought-provoking questions induce self-evaluation as readers are shown how to develop believable characters and storylines, conquer writer's block, consider the pros and cons of a collaborative partnership, and related concerns.
Customer Reviews:
If platitudes do it for you..........2006-08-02
... then this is your book.
One of the authors' experience is primarily in corporate video and teleconferences. The other is a marriage and family therapist. Some of the screenwriting authorities they quote are Donna Flint (huh), Tony Bui (?) and Sharon Y. Cobb (another huh). They cite the screenwriter and director of The Green Mile as Frank Tattersall (Darabont) and condemn both Green Mile and War of the Roses as "movies that have lost their believability" (Green Mile was a Stephen King supernatural fantasy and War of the Roses was a black comedy - neither of these genres pretend to be believable). They serve up new-agey advice such as "reaffirming what your own creative voice really sounds like will be a lifelong process" and "it is not until we decide to claim our destiny that we are faced with the true meaning of taking risks."
While this book doesn't pretend to provide anything other than motivation, it didn't succeed even in this regard. A screenwriter needs determination, resiliance and talent (along with some luck) to succeed in the biz, not half-baked, touchy-feely "there, there" strokes and condolences.
Sorry, gotta give this one a pass. I did give it two stars instead of one simply because they got Harold Ramis to contribute.
A Different Slant for Screenwriting Books.......2000-10-24
I really enjoyed this book because it takes a slant on screenwriting that's different from the (numerous) other books I've read on the subject. Instead of focusing on craft-like issues such as 3-act structure, which many other books have already done, "So You Want to be a Screenwriter" concentrates on the emotional and psychological issues of screenwriting. If you've ever experienced writer's block (and who hasn't?), if you've wondered things like what it would be like to collaborate with someone else on a script, or if you're trying to create more memorable characters in your scripts, this is the book for you.
Don't think though that because I've used the word "psychological," that this book reads like a college text - it doesn't. Also, it includes many interesting interviews with Hollywood insiders.
"So You Want to be a Screenwriter" would make a great addition to any writer's bookshelf.

Witch Town Lady.......2007-07-25
Marie, I received your book in the mail yesterday and last night, I read it from cover to cover. It was easy-to-read, informative, and directly to the point. I am planning on purchasing a vacation home soon. It is comforting to know that I can do exactly what you suggested in your book to create the kind of rental I would be proud to present to renters. And, it is nice to know I will be able to supplement my income to cover the new expenses that come along with owning a new home. Thank you for sharing your experiences and writing your book.
A Helpful, Easy Read.......2007-07-24
I have recently purchased a vacation property and this book gave great, easy suggestions on how to successfully rent out my property. It was very useful and gave me some great ideas! I would recommend it to anyone who has a rental property or even to people who are thinking of purchasing a rental property.
A "Must Read" for Vacation Homeowners!.......2007-07-18
Great Book - I really enjoyed reading this book. It got me excited about renting my vacation home. It is filled with detailed lists and instructions. I was left with very few questions. And, I know I can write to Marie for answers to any questions I may have now or later. I don't know of any other author that makes that offer. I have had rental properties for many years, but never thought of the ideas in this book. I can see how the vacation rentals are changing for the better. Only wish I had this book years ago. Great job Marie!

Book Description
With a Foreword by Prof. Louis B. Barnes of Harvard Business School, this book records the experience of a Chinese business woman who pioneered and succeeded in modernizing the aging Chinese retail business. Based on her years of business experience, the author recounts the turmoil, clashes of concepts and behind-the-scene decisions in the Chinese retail business, as well as psychological shocks, emotional perplexes, and intellectual apprehension she had gone through.
Breaking Grounds reveals how, in a series of groundbreaking moves, Bingxin Hu redefined Chinese retail, integrated Western management with the Chinese tradition and culture, and developed a unique and effective model that was copied by many other retailers.
The Chinese version of this book was an instant hit. Hu's first-hand description of her endeavor has benefited many Chinese retailers. A valuable case study on Chinese retail business and its management, Breaking Grounds also serves as a guide on Chinese market operation and investment strategies for Western business people who have invested or are thinking of investing in China.

Book Description
Much has been written about communicating within organizations but relatively little on the critical skill of communicating upward. Green and Knippen, experts in employee motivation and performance, show how essential it is to the success of an organization, public or private, for employees to get their ideas up the ladder and into the hands of the top decision-makers. Their book outlines more than 40 specific upward communication needs and offers a structure that will ensure that the movement of ideas upward actually takes place. Unique in that it provides concrete advice for executives, managers, and employees alike, the book is especially important for human resource specialists, people engaged in training and developing the managers of tomorrow and contributing to the organization's success today. Green and Knippen are quick to identify the barriers to communication of any kind, and particularly the special barriers that inhibit the flow of ideas upward. They provide readers with concrete advice, not only on what to communicate upward but the essential skills of how to do it. They maintain that knowing both what to communicate and how to communicate are the most crucial talents that one can have, and yes, they can be taught. But not only do they help people in their careers, they also help people take control of their lives off the job as well. Those who want to improve these essential skills and in doing so get along better with people in higher level positions will find much wisdom here, in a readable, engaging presentation, and a thoughtful look at what they must do first, and do now.

expensive for what it has to offer.......2003-11-22
This is an ok book but not one that I'd rush out to buy. My clients are more in the Government than in private sector and the info in here talks more to private sector issues but communicatoion is communication and I was hoping there would be new ideas/techniques, maybe some stattistics/research on how people best reveive/convey information. I didn't really get that from this book. There are better ones out there that are less expensive (check out Communicating Change)

Time well spent.......2000-07-19
What makes Ross Webber's book on time management different from other books on the topic is that it is short on wordy backgrounds and long on hands-on exercises. Depending on your perspective, that makes the book an ideal introduction to time management strategies or a good practical supplement to more in-depth books. I take the first perspective and therefore appreciate the book's succinct overview of key time management principles.
Each of the book's ten exercises is prefaced by a few pages of explanation and is illustrated with real examples from the author's experience teaching at the Wharton School of Business or from successful leaders who have mastered certain aspects of time management. For example, in a chapter on balancing time and relationships, Webber tells a story of Winston Churchill. Apparently, Churchill was known for his willingness to listen to a subordinate's suggestion even if he later rejected the idea. Webber cautions that you should never be so time-effective on the job that you neglect cultivating relationships with employers, employees or colleagues. In the accompanying exercise, he suggests keeping a list of people important to you and consciously making time to build relationships with them.
The book concludes with a Master Time and Activity Form that helps you plan each day by taking into account values, long- and short-term goals, important tasks and important people.

From the supplier: The 'hand-to-mouth' selling strategy's purpose of achieving short-term sales may no longer be effective as customers are getting to be more informed about the products and services they are to purchase. Moreover, this selling technique is costly, laborious, delivers inadequate returns and weakens the possibility of obtaining long-term objectives. This type of sales pattern, though, can be broken by understanding the customer's buying behavior, making follow-up calls without being assertive and making individual sales the natural outcome of the selling process.

Book Description
Julian Pottage, one of the world's top writers on the game, provides expert advice on how to play bridge - and win - as part of a team. He reveals the best ways to tackle bidding decisions, solutions to card-play problems, and a host of tactical strategies. Perhaps most helpful of all, Pottage goes step by step through a fictional 64-hand bridge game, pointing out "do's" and "don'ts."
Customer Reviews:
Win the Big Match.......2007-07-12
Yes these problems were challenging but not impossible and, yes I do think lots of experts would get these right at the table. Some no but most yes. That's why it's a bridge book! It's supposed to be challenging.
I didn't really care for the 'folksy' style where all the players have names and your right hand opponent has a fondness for pumpkin seeds, etc. but some might like that human element.
In short, I'd say these hands were of average to average plus quality for someone looking for difficult hands.
Other reviewers point to Kelsey and I can't disagree there. He's certainly the gold standard in my book too but that doesn't mean that others can't be worthy contributors.
Maybe its me, but I really disliked this one.......2006-12-24
I seriously doubt whether anyone below expert would solve these at the table. I doub't most experts would either.
I don't see what this book has to offer anyone.
You want interesting problems? Eddie Kantare has a better set. For hard problems try Jeff Rubens Bridge Worlds test Your Declarer Play.
For Advanced Players.......2006-11-27
Some of the hands are nicely done. Requiring visualization and playing for a specific layout. But in general I found the problems to be not that enjoyable. Yes they were hard (not just a double squeeze but also some exact layout)) but I didn't find they offered interesting twists.
For example - In Hugh Kelsey's Test Your Defense - the problems were tricky each with a pit fall or two, but they weren't super hard. Those were practical problems. These problems are unlikely to be solved at the table, even by strong players.
If you are Advanced (for real - not just an inflated ego) you may add a star and consider this average. There are many other books on problems that I consider more interesting and relevant.
I suggest Kelseys Test Your XXX series books, and Jannerstens "The Only Chance" instead.

Bridge Puzzles for Children.......2004-11-27
Want to learn how to play bridge? If, like me, you don't have a clue, then this book could help enlighten you before you next gather with the old ladies at the bridge group (even if it is aimed at children). It is basically a series of puzzles to lead the reader through a play of the card game, and it sets out the rules of bridge at the start. The puzzles begin quite simply, and get progressively more difficult through to the end. Hints are provided on each page and for each puzzle, to help the reader on their way, and the answers are given in the back of the book.
Aimed at older children rather than younger ones (who may find the lay out too lacking in colour and illustrations) my 12 year old son enjoyed trying out the first few puzzles of the book. His patience did wear a little thin, however, as he wanted different 'sets' of games that he could complete, rather than each puzzle being a play stage of one game. The book would be great if produced as a colourful version, in a more child-like format, to attract a wider group of young readers.
If the aim is to teach a child about the game of bridge, then 'Bridge Puzzles for Children' helps in a very practical and easy way, illustrating many of the dilemmas that a player in a real game would come across, and developing skills that would need to be utilised. I would describe the book as methodical, rather than 'fun', but excellent reading for children who favour learning in a logical way. However, even for an adult, the layout could be improved.
Good Beginning For Children.......2004-09-30
Good examples of how to play the cards in order to take the tricks at the end of the play of each hand. Just reading it should help to develop the children's thinking skills. And maybe they will someday learn to be great bridge players.
Very highly recommended for family.......2004-08-08
The card game of contract bridge is often considered as too complicated for children. But this is simply not true. Indeed, learning to play contract bridge can enhanced cognitive skills, develop patience, develop an ability to concentrate, and be a lot of fun in the bargain! Very highly recommended for family, school, and community library collections, Bridge Puzzles For Children: Simple Card Play Problems To Introduce Them To This Wonderful Game by David H. Levin (Bronze Life Mater at bridge) begins with the basic rules of bridge and gradually progresses to the subtle strategies of bridge through actual card play problems in the form of puzzles which are accompanied by a hint. A comprehensive answer section is provided making Bridge Puzzles For Children a perfect and non-frustrating introduction to what can become a life-time's enjoyment of one of the most sociable of card games

Book Description
A complete guide for those who want to create their best look. It covers style (not to be confused ith fashion), and describes how to make bodyline, wardrobe, color, hair and make-up work for you. Includes thirty-two pages demonstrating coordination of lipstick and blush with wardrobe.
Customer Reviews:
Not Always in Style.......2007-06-13
This book was very disappointing. The advice is ridged and out dated. I found much better advice in a few magazines rather than this supposed "expert' expressed. If you want to find up to date and cutting edge fashion advice read a magazine and save your money on this.
A Bit Out Of Date But A Good Primer On Body Shapes.......2006-07-15
Earlier editions of this book were published in the 1980s. I had that and a 1990s edition. The advice has changed very little over the years. I give this book credit for fine-tuning my knowledge of color theory beyond Carol Jackson's warm vs. cool concepts, and teaching me how to dress in scale with my body shape and features. I recommend starting with this book to get the basics, then follow it with a more current book like Kendall Farr's "Pocket Stylist" for a modern interpretation of body shapes. A big drawback to Always In Style is that the wardrobe suggestions are a bit out of date, as is the author's appearance. She has had a bad facelift. Visit your local library and compare her picture to the previous editions of this book, and you'll see what I mean.
The spectrum of body types.......2003-03-17
This book seems to have people looking for themselves specifically, when basically you need to look for your where your body type fits into the spectrum.
I too was confused, until I read that Grace Kelley was a soft straight until she was overweight then she moved to the right on the spectrum to the curvy. The movement on the spectrum moves to the right if you gain weight, and to the left if you lose weight, some may never be all the way to the left and the same goes to the right. When an individual is overweight it add roundness to the face that may not be there when slimmer, and that can throw you off your placement on the spectrum. A "straight" body type that is overweight may need to look at the "soft straight" body type for clothing line suggestions, not curvy.
I don't believe that Doris explains that well enough. On the whole I believe the book shows how to be aware, of what can make us attractive, and to look at the whole picture, and pay attention to the details. Remember - Line, scale, and color.
Overall this is a good book that trys to cover too many details without thorough explanations, but brings us to thinking.
I have upgraded my opinion.......2002-02-27
The first time I reviewed this book, I only gave it 2 stars because I couldn't figure out where I fit on her body line chart. After careful study of the wardrobe plans in the back of the book (which are really helpful; perhaps the best part of the book!) however, I finally got it and it became useful again! Although the color palettes were a good idea, she only included 8 colors for each one, not hardly enough to build a wardrobe on, and not really any advice as to how to use the colors in your wardrobe. Also, she identified secondary and tertiery palettes, but gave no actual colors to go with them (or how to combine the 2-3 palettes). Identifying my color palette was also difficult according to her classifications and I don't know if I've got it right yet. A much better book to do your own color analysis is "The Triumph of Individual Style" by Carla Mathis and Helen Villa Conner. All in all, I believe there is some good advice in this book, but it takes a lot of work and study to figure out what she is trying to tell you--you really have to read between the lines here. Another thing that irks me is that she said in her book we can get updated wardrobe plans and view the Always in Style Portfolio on the web, and get a free analysis at the QVC site, and now I can't find the first (I get a weird login screen at her website) and the second is no longer in service.
Good Fashion and Style Information.......2001-10-26
As with most books, you can always learn something. Ms Pooser's book shows her gift for understanding fashion, body types, and clothing styles. She explains really well how to know your body type and the style that best compliments your build. I must admit that I prefer Carole Jackson's book Color Me Beautiful when it comes to explaining the seasonal color theory. It is very clear and she keeps it all simple. When it's simple, that's when it can be the most fun!
We all are unique, and some people may be able to borrow from other seasons easier than others, but the biggest reason to stay within one season is that you can TRIPLE your wardrobe. All your clothes will coordinate with each other as well as with you.
I am a Winter season, and once in a while I may wear a medium peach colored shirt with my jeans, but then I find that my rose or my red lipstick seriously clashes with it, so I end up forgoing lip color altogether and wearing gloss. Peach lipstick makes me look drab, and brown toned lipstick makes me look like I need to wash my face!!
