Book Description
Savage Theory articulates the powerful mythology of cinema as the premier medium for magic in modern times. Envisioning the cinema as a form of magical ritual that possesses the power to enliven, heal, and enchant, Rachel O. Moore explores modernity’s relationship to the primitive by analyzing understandings of primitive belief and ritual in early film theory alongside illustrative scenes from popular as well as avant-garde film.
Moore mines the theories of language, spectatorship, and cinematic expression in the writings of Vachel Lindsay, Sergei Eisenstein, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin, among others. Illuminating the links between these theorists’ preoccupations with cinema as a form of primal communication and the numbing effects of modernity, she demonstrates how movies are uniquely able to negotiate the fragmentary and isolating nature of a modern world. In constructing an alternative to cognitive, psychoanalytic, and ideological approaches to film analysis, Moore provides eye-opening discussions of films such as Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising, Hollis Frampton’s Nostalgia, and Robert Bresson’s l’Argent. Drawing from Marx’s theory of the commodity and Lukács’s work on second nature, she outlines the fetish character of the film image and reveals the emergence of the camera as a magical tool replete with animistic powers otherwise lost in the storm of progress.
Bound to influence the way future scholars think about the connection between modernism and primitivism, as well as the role of cinema therein during the early twentieth century, Savage Theory will be welcomed by scholars of film theory and anthropology and will also appeal to a wider cultural studies audience.
Book Description
The purpose of this book is to present a survey of Jewish music to illuminate its special role as a mirror of history, tradition, and cultural heritage. The 27 topical chapters have been placed within a modified chronological perspective to present a historic picture of virtually every important development in Jewish music. The book represents a culmination of several decades of the author's dedicated labor and scholarly study in this field.

Interesting but ..........2000-04-27
The title Passport to Jewish Music is, in my opinion, a misnomer. Or perhaps I didn't understand the author's meaning when I ordered the book. As well as historical material, most of which shows how American cantorial music was affected, there is quite a lot that is bibliographic such as sections devoted to Abraham Z. Idelsohn & Gershon Ephros (cantors and researchers), Leonard Bernstein, Berlin, Gershwin, Ernest Bloch and Offenbach to name a few. The writing is often interesting but the main reason I have not given more stars is because this is the only book I have read on music without a single written note. For example statements such as:
"The cultural legacy of Judeo-Spanish folk song has best preserved the history of Iberian-Judaism. That music was created and appreciated during the old "golden" times, where it has been preserved and cherished. Those distinctive melodies and Ladino poetics echo with old Castilian, Aragonese, Catalonian, and Andalusian tunes and folklore. Scholars of Spanish history study them for information about the culture of Old Spain."
While there is a reference to a possible source to see the actual music, I would very much have liked to have seen at least a small sample.

Good Intro to a DEEP Subject.......2006-05-13
At the time this book was written, Raymond Smullyan was one of the world's leading experts on Godel's Incompleteness Theorems -- some of the deepest mathematical results of the 20th century.
This book is actually a gentle intro to these topics, and the most amazing part of it is that Dr. Smullyan keeps the level suitable for children.
That does NOT mean this book is not suitable for adults. It is extremely entertaining no matter what your age is.
The book is mostly a progression of logical conundrums. You are started out on the island of knights and knaves. These two types of people are visually indistinguishable, but knights always tell the truth while knaves always lie.
You are then presented with various scenarios where the objective is for you to ask one question from which you obtain some meaningful information without knowing whether or not the person you are asking is a knight or a knave. The classic example is that you meet two people one of whom is a knight and one of whom is knave. Your objective? Ask one of them one question that allows you to determine which one is the knight and which one is the knave. Answer? "If I were to ask your friend if he was a knight, would he say 'Yes'" A knight will always answer this question "Yes" and a knave "No". If you can follow the logic through to conclude this, you are on your way!!
The situations through the book grow more complex. For example, later you find yourself on a similar island where the natives no longer speak English. They words for yes and no are "boo" and "da". The problem is, you don't know which is which!
At the end of the book, you are presented with the ultimate level of complexity where not only do half the people always lie and half tell the truth, and not only do they use the words "boo" and "da" for yes and no (without you knowing which is which), but half of the population is also insane which means that whatever is true, they BELIEVE the opposite. So an insane liar always inadvertantly tells the truth because what they believe is false...and then they lie about it.
Sound hard?
Yeah, that's the point.
Nonetheless, the book is a nice progression, and you definitely get better and better and following the logic through and thinking in these terms, which makes this book GREAT mental exercise! Some of the best I have found, in fact.
One final comment, John Houston's review is very wrong on the point of implication: an implication of the form a->b, is ALWAYS true when a is false. This is elementary logic -- a subject in which Dr. Smullyan was a world renowned expert.
I have no doubt that Dr. Houston is a very knowledgeable physicist, but unfortunately -- in spite of his apparently strong feelings to the contrary -- this has not prepared him to comment competently on formal logic.
Great Book.......2004-07-17
A true delight to read, although the one reviewers comments (John Morrison from Houston) brought to mind the truth of Pope's comment,"A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, And drinking largely sobers us again." As you read this book hopefully your brain will be stimulated to ask questions AND to dig deeper to learn ther answers. Smullyan is NOT wrong when he says that a false hypothesis yields a true conditional statement. I haven't read the book in decades, so I can't comment on whether or not Smullyan explicits says this, but conditional statements do not express causal relations (I can understand how a physicist would think this.)
Anyhow, this is a great book for young children with inquisitive minds and even for old children who think they know it all.

A wonderful workout for your brain.......2003-12-23
The beauty of this book that the problems in it do not require any special knowledge. It can almost equally be tackled by old and young. I was 11 or so when I read this book and was able to enjoy many problems ... I still enjoy them when I am 31. Please, reprint the book!
A Good Introduction to Logic.......2003-01-18
This book is a chockful of puzzles and riddles, humorous and bizarre. The author (Raymond Smullyan) uses these puzzles to introduce formal logic in a particularly fun and interesting way. This book also illustrates the unique sense of humor many mathematicians. He characterizes a drunken mathematician as one who says, "I can prove anyshing!"
Added January 2003
I used some questions from this book in my college physics class last fall (2002). I noticed a couple problems with the book and what it tries to present. The book is still fun and amusing, but not fully accurate. Consequently, I reduce my rating to a four.
I believe that logic is nothing more than reading (or hearing) and comprehending sentences, and identifying whether sentences are true or false. This book does an excellent job of training the reader to read what he reads. This is something the modern reader needs desperately -- witness the success of persons like Hugh Ross in persuading people that the Bible says what the Bible manifestly does not say.
However, the book emphasizes something that is very wrong: the claim that "A false statement implies anything" and its logical equivalent, "Anything implies a true statement."
"If we hadn't stopped and turned back, we would have been caught in an avalanche" would be just as true (after stopping and turning back) on the hottest summer day in the desert as on a stormy snowy day in the mountains in winter. Likewise, "If Al Gore had been allowed to take office as President, 9/11 would have not occurred" and "If Al Gore had been allowed to take office as President, 9/11 would have occurred" would both be equally true without considering what might have happened had Gore been President.
If "a false statement implies anything," then we cannot discuss intelligently what might have happened if we'd made different choices.
The book does prove that "If 2 + 2 = 5 then I am the Pope." It is possible that false statements of a certain type are guarranteed to imply anything.
I would like to see this book back in print. Most of it is excellent and on target in logic. Perhaps a second edition could be published, adjusting its take on these issues.
A must have book of logic puzzles.......2000-07-24
An amazing book that trains you to use your brain effectively through a careful structure that increases in complexity as you progress. I read it when very young and would like to get copies for all my staff as it is an excellent tutorial on logic and perfect for orienting systems programmers into looking at complex problems with a fresh viewpoint. Sadly it appears to be out of print and I join the cry in asking the publisher to pull it out of the archives.

Excellent companion piece to "The Psychology of Selling".......2007-09-13
For my personal preferences, there are two acknowledged masters of sales. The first is Zig Ziglar, the second is Brian Tracy. While I find great value in the works of Jeffrey Gitomer, Frank Rumbauskas, Tim Connor and others, all roads eventually lead back to Zig and Brian (as well as Napoleon Hill...see below).
Tracy's "The Psychology of Selling" is one of the few books I honestly classify as "essential," and I do so without reservation. Like Ziglar, Tracy wants salespeople to see the craft of selling as a series of relationships, not drive-bys. You have to learn how to sell. The biggest challenge is "un-learning" the garbage you've been fed by snake oil peddlers.
The title "Advanced Selling Strategies" is important, because "strategy" is what's often lacking. You have to do your homework. You have to build a relationship. You have to create a sense of buying urgency. You have to know when it is time to close the sale, and when that time comes, you have to know how to do it.
And you have to do this uniquely for EVERY client you sign up. Forget the "Sales Scripts That Close EVERY Sale" books. They're garbage. If you're dealing with a prospect who's not bright enough to spot a script a mile away, that prospect should not become one of your clients.
That said, here are the chapters in "Advanced Selling Strategies."
1). The Psychology Of Selling
2). The Development Of Personal Power
3). Personal Strategic Planning For the Sales Professional
4). The Heart Of The Sale
5). The Profession Of Selling
6). Motivating People To Buy
7). Influencing The Buying Decision
8). Prospecting: Filling Your Sales Pipeline
9). How To Make Powerful Presentations
10). Closing The Sale: The Endgame Of Selling
Those are the "bones" of the book, and trust me...there's plenty of meat on each of them.
If you're serious about sales...serious about being the best, serious about challenging yourself and being an achiever instead of someone who makes excuses for limited achievement...I recommend the following:
1). "The Psychology of Selling" by Brian Tract
2). "Advanced Selling Strategies" by Brian Tracy
3). "Secrets of Closing The Sale" (2003 Updated Edition) by Zig Ziglar
4). "Over The Top: Moving From Survival To Stability, From Stability To Success, From Success To Significance" by Zig Ziglar
5). "The Law Of Success In Sixteen Lessons Complete" by Napoleon Hill
Happy selling!
Tracy's best book on selling - Best sales book available today........2006-10-13
Although this book was written over ten years ago, Advanced Selling Strategies is still Brian Tracy's best work on selling and perhaps, the best book period on the subject of selling that is on the bookshelves today.
I started in phone sales back in 1993. Using the techniques Brian discloses, I went from tied for last place - 68th out of 68 people in March 1993 to 3rd out of 75 people doing about $100/day in sales to doing over $1,500/day in sales one month later in April 1993! His techniques work.
The magic of Brian is that he helps bring out the inner power that lies dormant inside all of us while providing powerful sales techniques. His sales techniques are low key, friendly and non threatening to the prospect.
Brian shows you how to change you self image as a sales person. Not just the hookey-pookey rah-rah positive stuff, but how to see yourself as a consultant rather than a sales person as well as how to see yourself as a success.
Using the phrase, "I'm not trying to sell you anything." Has worked wonders in opening doors for me. Other phrases like, "That is an interesting question, why did you say that?" "How exactly do you mean?" "Why did you ask that?" Surprisingly are non threatening and get the prospect to open up.
And I really benefitted from the 20 idea method for unleashing creativity. Spending an hour a day, every morning reading has made a major impact on my sales not to mention listening to tapes in my car and watching videos at home.
Brian's mental techniques of practice, drill, rehearse along with affirmations and visualization helped me probably more than anything. I agree with Brian that with affirmations and visualization, your future in sales is UNLIMITED!!!
Funny how whenever I stop for any reason, the results stop as well. Sort of like going to the gym. Or put another way, if you don't u se it, you'll lose it. A daily mental aerobics program of affirmations and visualizations will make you and keep you mentally fit and breaking sales records.
Goal setting gets beat to death by almost every trainer, but nobody does it as well as Brian. Teach it properly that is.
Lastly, this book and these skills will help every salesperson regardless of the type of sales you do.
Along with Advanced Selling Strategies I also recommend The Psychology of Selling and Be A Sales Superstar also by Brian Tracy.
Detailed how-to information that can be usefully applied .......2006-03-13
Brian Tracy details the psychological aspects and the nitty gritty of the three steps to effective consultative selling: (1) build rapport and credibility, (2) diagnose problem, and (3) prescribe / present solution.
Brian describes several critical success factors in selling. The critical success factors in any profession is the minimal set of factors that need to be accomplished well to be successful in that profession. For effective selling, mastering the following critical success factors is required: (1) prospecting (2) getting appointments (3) qualifying (4) problem identification and clarification (5) presenting (6) answering objections (7) closing (8) follow-through and delivery and (9) resales and referrals.
Brian discusses unique aspects related to selling to large accounts. You will undoubtedly become a more effective salesperson by practicing the techniques discussed here.
All you ever wanted to know about selling, and then some..........2006-03-04
Becoming a successful salesperson isn't dependent on inherent talent, says Brian Tracy. Eighty percent of the success of top sales people is due to their attitude. In this book, Brian Tracy has advice for adopting the right attitude, and for all three steps of the selling process including finding your customers, presenting your product and closing the sale.
The best salespeople see themselves as self-employed. They know that they are responsible for their own careers. They see themselves as problem-solvers and strategic thinkers. They try to solve problems that their customers have. They also practice the Golden Rule, selling unto others as they would have others sell unto them. They are honest and ethical with customers.
This book is crammed with advice for improving your attitude towards selling, prospecting for customers, presenting products to customers and closing your sales. An invaluable resource.
A Great Book on Sales.......2005-12-26
I've been searching for a book on how to apply NLP in Network Marketing (aka Multi-Level Marketing) for many years... But unfortunately there were none written on this subject... And so I wrote one myself! But before I embarked on it, I made certain I've read every book on NLP and Sales as well as all the recommended Network Marketing books.
And in my research, I've found Tracy's Advanced Selling Strategies to be one of the best books ever written on sales! This book is also a great complement to "The Unfair Advantage" by Duane Lakin.

Advanced Selling Strategies.......2006-01-24
"Advanced Selling Strategies" in an excellent audio cassette by Brian Tracy. I have now developed exceptional self-confidence in my selling abilities. I have now managed to overcome the psychological barriers that were curtailing my sales and personal success. I have acquired skills and expertise on various facets of selling such as creating positive first impression, how to create a unique selling proposition, how to develop trust with my prospects, and how I should close the sale.
I particularly enjoyed learning about the modern selling techniques that takes a positive approach to selling that includes building trust, helping in identifying the needs of the prospect and ensuring that they are met by the products or services that one is selling, among other things. I have developed the habit of looking at successful people and studying how they achieve their success. I talk to them and continuously learn new techniques to ensure that I am a high achiever, not only in the selling area but in various aspects of my life.
We all sell something, be it our skills to our employers or goods or services as part of our jobs or as owners of our businesses. In all cases, the question arises as to whether we are getting the most revenue/profit from the sale and if we are having highly satisfied customers from our efforts. To answer these and other questions, I recommend one to listen to the audio cassette by Brian Tracy. This may not only be the most effective use of your time whilst driving but can make a huge difference between being just another salesperson or being a first rate, top class, high earning and satisfied person.
Quantity doesn't equal quality.......2003-12-02
If the sign of a good book is having lots of pages, I'm sure that this would be the best sales book on the market. But it's not a good book. Not even close.
The content is valuable, but it's poorly organized. If I followed Brian Tracy's advice on Pareto's Law, then I'd be frustrated looking for the 20% of the content that is actually useful. This is Brian's worst sales book by far, and not a book I would recommend to anyone, let alone someone just starting out in sales.
It would be a better book if he cut the fluff by 75% and got to the point. Instead of "Advanced Selling Strategies", pick up "Be a Sales Superstar: 21 Great Ways to Sell More, Faster, Easier in Tough Markets" by the same author. The content is almost identical, and a much easier read.
This is a must read book for all sales people........1999-06-02
This book tells you the styles, tactics and different ways of selling, it shows the way marketers react to sales and how they make their sales as well. After reading this book, i was changed for better.
