did not like.......2007-01-18
I was not impressed with this book. I have 7 kids in Sunday school and nothing in the book would have impressed the church or the kids.
Don't waist your money.
Book Description
Eleanor's grandmother, Bubbe, makes chicken soup with matzo balls every Passover, and this year is no exception. With Eleanor's help, Bubbe makes some of the lumpiest, bumpiest, yummiest-looking matzo balls Eleanor has ever seen. These matzo balls are so delicious that no one in Eleanor's family can resist sneaking a taste, each thinking one or two matzo balls will never be missed. But when it comes time to serve the soup at the Passover meal, there aren't enough matzo balls for everyone-until Eleanor find one last matzo ball in a very unexpected place! Expressive, cheerful illustrations complement this warm story of a family's celebration of the Passover holiday and their rediscovery of its true meaning.
Customer Reviews:
Warm family story rich with tradition.......2001-08-18
This is one of my three-year-old son's favorite books. He loves the interaction between the daughter and grandmother. The story isn't heavy on the relgious aspects of Pesach, but it does touch on them. Most of all, it is an endearing story of family tradition.
Upbeat story of a family tradition.......2000-06-23
This book offers an upbeat story of one family's tradition of having Gramma prepare the matzo ball soup for Passover seder. Gramma shows up at the door with her special soup pot, and her favorite grand-daughter pitches in to help. Unfortunately, the story is cluttered with a lot of family members, dropping by to snatch a matzo ball out of the pot. And, the book fails to offer any religious meaning to the holiday -- the "Rugrats Passover" does a much better job at this. Comparing a lumpy matzo ball to the full moon at Passover seder is a bit of a stretch, and added little to the story. In short, my 3 yr old son found this book un-interesting. It lacks the warmth and enthusiasm of a similar book about a little girl spending the night at her grandfather's house: "Everything from A to Z....," which my son memorized from cover-to-cover within a week after the book arrived.

Book Description
On the first night of Chanukah a lucky boy receives a shiny new dreidel, but once it starts spinning it just wont stop! With a mind of its own, the dreidel spins quickly across the floor, out the door, and on down the street, with its excited owner and family in hot pursuit. Soon the whole city joins the chase to catch the runaway toy. Where is that dreidel heading, and will it ever stop spinning? This is one journey worth pursuing right up to its magical conclusion!
Customer Reviews:
Chanukah IS NOT the Jewish Christmas.......2005-06-09
With such wonderful illustrations, and a mostly enjoyable text, it's too bad that this book gets its inspiration from "Twas The Night Before Christmas". Jewish parents work hard teaching their children that Chanukah IS NOT the Jewish Christmas. This book doesn't help. There are much better choices out there.
A Spirited Chanukah Romp............2002-11-25
"'Twas the first night of Chanukah and on the fifth floor,/There was holiday hustling and bustling galore./Papa was shining the silver menorah,/Mama was wrapping a gift for Aunt Dora./Grandma was slicing up two chocolate babkas,/Grandpa was grating potatoes for latkes./Sister was stirring the soup with a ladle,/And I at her feet spun my shiny new dreidel..." And with that our young narrator's holiday top takes off, spinning, out of control, through the apartment, down the stairs and through the city streets, on out to the country, past farms and valleys, over the ocean and up to the sky, where it becomes a glittering star..... Leslea Newman's engaging, rollicking, chain of events text is filled with lilting rhyme, rhythm, energy, and joy. Kyrsten Brooker's clever, sparkling multi-media artwork is bold and busy, and rich in vibrant color, wonderful facial expressions, and humorous, eye-catching detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Runaway Dreidel! is a captivating, fun-filled, celebratory romp. "Happy Chanukah to all, and to all a good night."
a nice addition to the Hanukah collection.......2002-10-06
With nods to "Twas the night before" and the Runaway Ginderbread Man and Runaway Ricecake, etc, this is a rhyming story about the cultural celebration of Hanukkah, a celebration of grated potatoes, family and dreidels. A boy plays with a shiny new dreidel, that spins and spins out the door; spinning past challahs that are two for a dollah... Spins from city to country to ocean to sky, with fun illustrations along the way.

This book has transformed my social cooking into the 'legendary' category. Everything from Arabian cooking to true Carolina BBQ is wonderfully explained. The book is a leisure read in the kitchen and Leslie's writing style demonstrates a warm, wonderful appreciation for life. I couldn't recommend another cookbook more.

I Have A Little Dreidel
ASIN: 081095785X |
Book Description
Incorporating the popular music of 12 Days of Christmas into a Chanukah book, this is perfect for children of any religious orientation.
"On the first night of Chanukah..." begins the familiar tune in a book that sees the wondrous days of Chanukah through the eyes of young child. The child's family grows bigger and bigger as the holiday gets closer and closer. Each night, one new item or person is added to the celebration-and there is always a present for every child in the room!
The accumulating text makes this book fun to read (and sing!) aloud while the bright and cheerful illustrations allow a young reader to count each object added. Educational and a joy for adults and children, The Eight Nights of Chanukah is a wonderful book for the whole family to share.
Customer Reviews:
nothing of value.......2005-09-28
As with Runaway Dreidel, Ms Newman takes her inspiration for a Chanukah book from Xmas, not a good place to start writing a good quality book for Jewish children. So, it is not surprising that the book contains nothing of value. Neither the text nor the illustrations feel like they depict a Jewish family at Chanukah.

Book Description
Already a success on Broadway, in1954 Paul Newman began his film career--disastrously--as Basil the slave in "The Silver Chalice." Before long, however, he was considered not only a fine actor but also the sexiest man in films. Determined to steer his own career, he broke away from the control of the studio system; with astute choices of scripts and directors, he established a screen presence that has remained both popular and respected. From "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "The Hustler" to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "Mrs. Bridge," and "Nobody's Fool," Newman has repeatedly demonstrated how versatile and compelling an actor he is. Besides his achievements on the stage and screen, including directing, he has won four national amateur car racing titles, devoted himself to political activism, and founded Newman's Own, a business that has donated more than $70 million to worthy causes. Drawing on interviews with Newman and with his colleagues, and with the help of 120 striking photographs, Eric Lax looks at this exceptional life and the man behind the enduring screen image. Eric Lax is the author of Woody Allen: A Biography and the award-winning Life and Death on 10 West.

An Excellent Guide to Become Aware of Things We do Wrong.......2006-08-07
With the help of this book anyone can improve his playing level, of course with a reasonable amount of application. What I found unique about this book is that it helped me play strongly by first making me aware of some of the things I was doing wrong. The author focuses on what he calls "The eight bad moves", describing them with enough detail so you identify yourself so one can overcome the faults that are producing them.
The eight bad moves analyzed in this book are:
- Neglecting development of your pieces.
- Exposing your king to attack.
- Making too many queen moves in the opening.
- Weakening your castle position.
- Getting pinned.
- Failing to guard against captures.
- Underestimating your opponents treats.
- Losing a won game.
But this book is not only about identifying bad moves, you will also learn new ideas and techniques that will be most helpful in actual game playing. In summary I really believe this is a great book for beginners.

A Nice Compendium for the Under 1500 Crowd.......2006-11-20
Who of us over the age of 50 doesn't love Fred Reinfeld and in a younger day, didn't learn at least some of his chess from his books? Certainly, Fred recycled a lot of his material over and over; was often hyperbolic and at times over-selective in his annotations; and isn't going to teach you modern grandmaster chess.
But in "Improving Your Chess" --- really a compendium of extracts from several of his other works --- Fred provides a solid 180 or so pages of what he does best: basic instruction for the improving player. I'd say this book is good for the USCF 1000-1500, perhaps petering out a bit at the upper end but still providing value.
Fred propounds and briefly illustrates the basic principles which we think we know but often overlook in the heat of tournament combat--- simple things like development, control of the center, not wasting time with unnecessary pawn moves. He talks about how to exploit White's initiative, and how Black can take control if White plays incorrectly. Now, translating his few examples into actual practice in your own games will take a lot of over-the-board practice; this book alone cannot work miracles (although I don't know of a book that can, actually).
The most original part of the book is quite close to the front; the "eight bad moves" (referring actually to eight bad things to do -- or not do!) although again seemingly obvious, remains fresh and useful even over 50 years later.
The end of the book contains a series of tactics and checkmate problems, excerpted from his "1001" books. It's a nice selection and working through them will certainly improve your play.
Appended to the book is a very high-level overview of common openings; it's rather dated and far too brief to be of much use. However, it's written in a common-sense style and the ideas may be of interest.
Should you buy this book? It's available on the used market for a couple of dollars, and at that price, it's an enjoyable read with more than enough content to be of practical use.

Despite unnerving swings in individual stock valuations--or perhaps because of them--many knowledgeable observers still believe the 21st century will ultimately earn its stripes as the Age of Biotech. Cynthia Robbins-Roth, named by Forbes magazine as one of the industry's top insiders, certainly is among them. And in From Alchemy to IPO, she persuasively argues investors better take heed because they ain't seen nothin' yet. "Most of us think of biotech as medicine or genetically engineered crops," writes Robbins-Roth. But in the very near future, she continues, it also "may make it possible for humans to reach the stars and to change the environment on other planets." Think that's far-fetched? She says developments like this are already in early stages and, in a deliberately proselytizing manner, traces their roots to the current business nitty-gritty, finally focusing on the long-term moneymaking potential. "The biotech world will never be an easy place for investors," she cautions, but with hundreds of ongoing projects "poised to power into the marketplace," there will be plenty of "opportunities for investors and employees alike." Recommended for readers seeking an informed tutorial on this field of the future. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
A fascinating glimpse inside the life-and-death business of biotechnology.
"A tour-de-force for anyone who is interested in the biotech industry. I applaud the enormous achievement of Cynthia Robbins-Roth." -Frederick Frank, Senior Managing Director & Vice Chair, Lehman Brothers
"From Alchemy to IPO tells the dramatic story of this revolutionary industry as only an insider can." -George Rathmann, President and CEO, ICOS Corporation, Chairman Emeritus, Amgen
Written by a well-known industry insider, From Alchemy to IPO addresses the coming-of-age of biotech products and companies and traces the history of biotechnology from its early inception in the seventies to today's heyday of new solutions and breakthrough treatments. It describes the amazing entrepreneurial trail of product development, novel business models, and critical trials that eventually pave the way to market. This is the first book to accurately record the inner workings of an industry-biotechnology-that's on the verge of living up to its monumental promise to change the world as we know it.
Customer Reviews:
Good introductory text and overview of the industry.......2005-03-06
I read From Alchemy to IPO for an MBA course on entrepreneurialism in the pharmaceutical industry. Given my background (undergraduate business, financial analyst role, limited in-depth scientific knowledge), I found this book to be a very useful and balanced guide to both the business and technical aspects of biotechnology.
Robbins-Roth includes enough information on initial public offerings (IPOs) and merger activity among biotech firms to warm the hearts of the most resolute business student, but the drug discovery and development process is also covered in sufficient detail to give the lay reader an understanding for the operational challenges faced by firms in this sector.
Add to this the competent yet necessarily superficial descriptions of more esoteric terms such as monoclonal antibodies and combinatorial chemistry, and you have a solid text that covers the industry and its ongoing challenges very well.
Brilliant Overview.......2004-05-31
This is a great overview of the world of biotech. The author explains the science with clarity and enthusiasm and the introduction this book provides to the corporate side of biotech is also very interesting and well written.
bad writing.......2004-01-15
I read the first 20 pages of this book and quit. It was too painful to keep going. The author's wording in convoluted, tangential, and just plain annoying. She throws out dozens of names from the industry, so many you can't keep them straight. There is poor flow to the writing, so you cannot understand why she is telling you things from one line to the next. The topics of each paragraph jump from one subject to another with abrupt, confusing transitions. I returned the book!
Clear and non hyped intro into biotech.......2002-05-28
I'll be starting a biomedical engineering Ph.D. program in the fall and have read recently a few books on the biotech subject. This one gave the clearest picture of the biotech industries, the companies in them, how to manage and finance them, as well as how to recognize solid biotech companies for investing purposes. A quick and entertaining read for anyone interested in the business behind biotechnology.
WAY OVERRATED BOOK ON BIOTECH.......2001-08-25
to quote another user: "The author's expertise in science, finance, management strategy, and journalism..." the author can write decently and she may know about biotech (hard to judge for me not being a scientist)...BUT her knowledge about management strategy and finance is limited at best...that wouldn't be so bad if she were to stick to write about science...however, she thinks she knows about finance and strategy...who wants to read about strategy should stick with hamel, pralahad, porter etc., who wants to read about finance (valuation) should stick with copeland et al, and who wants to read about ipos should try articles by jay ritter.
