Arthur Marx's Groucho: A Photographic Journey

Customer Reviews:
Groucho, from a fan's point of view........2005-12-11
The best insider account of a celebrity I've ever read, told with true affection.
Improves upon repeated readings.......2005-09-04
I just re-read this book again recently and it is always compelling, amusing, disturbing, and fascinating. You get to know other aspects of not only Groucho, but Zeppo, Gummo, and various members of Groucho's inner circle, especially the controversial Erin Fleming. Even friends of the author become interesting characters. One of my favorite books about a show business figure, and written with style, wit, clarity, and honesty. I would passionately recommend this to any Marx Brothers fan, especially those of us who recall their resurgence in the late sixties and early seventies, and who celebrated when Steve Stoliar managed to convince Universal to release the elusive Animal Crackers. An absolute must!
Untypical tell all.......2005-08-01
Like some others here, I had to force myself to read an insider tell-all book. But this one is really different. Steve S. tries to see the positive sides of everyone involved, and feels that all the legal hoopla did nothing for Groucho's last days. Steve's job inside the Marx home was to answer fan mail (all signatures were real but one), and catalog and maintain the show business archival material. He sympathetically watched the decline and demise of one of his screen idols, and also helped with the publication of at least 3 books about Groucho(rerelease of Beds, GrouchoPhile, etc.).
Like the author, I found it ironic that Groucho's ashes were interred very close to where the author's own mother was interred. One of those funny stories that you can't make up.
Once in a while, the humor fell flat for me, so I give this one 4 stars.
WONDERFUL.......2004-10-08
Obviously I'm not alone in my high regard for this book. It was one of the last books about Groucho I read because I have an inherit distrust of former employees "tell-all" books. I was just very pleasantly surprised, because this was a labor of love by Steve Soliar. He is an excellent writer, giving you the feeling you are having a conversation with a friend. It is so refreshing to find someone who is part of the Hollywood "Paradise with a Labotomy" who is clearly a very down to earth fellow and treats even the worst of those he encountered with respect and decency. If you loved the Marx brothers and especially Groucho this is a book you will want for your library. Thanks Steve, Groucho would have been very proud of you.
Steve & Groucho.......2001-11-18
A great book and different than any other Marx Brothers book. Steve Stoliar was a college student who was lucky enough to spend the last couple years of Groucho's life with him. What makes this book so fascinating is Steve could have been anybody. He was just in the right place at the right time. Steve's sincerity shines throughout. A unique look at a legend who remained in the limelight until the end.

Lucid and Probing.......2005-11-07
In these essays, Solomon explores in more detail certain topics that he had only been able to touch on more generally in the earlier, full-fledged biography he had written of Beethoven. (He has since followed up more essays strictly on "late Beethoven.") I find these essays thoughtful, probing, and lucid--not least the fine essay on Beethoven's genuine but ambivalent quest for faith.
--Frank Burch Brown
Well-written psychoanalysis of Beethoven's life and works........1997-10-15
After having read Solomon's work regarding Mozart, I was interested to see his work about Beethoven. Interestingly, although his _Beethoven_ was shorter, I found his theories much more convincing and interesting in the latter. The work synthesized multiple facts about the composer, including the near-psychotic attacks on his sister-in-law, Johanna, and a chapter regarding the Immortal Beloved, who, I am now convinced, was Antoine Brentano. This chapter was allthewhile extremely moving--it nearly brought me to tears. At the same time, although I was treated to a brief overview of Beethoven's life, I feel that there are large gaps in the biography that were simply glossed over, since they were not critical to Solomon's psychoanalytic theses. As a result, I am now tempted to find Thayer-Forbes biography to fill in these holes. Yet, in all, it was an extremely enjoyable read.
Book Description
Three works by conductor Felix Weingartner (1863-1942) feature the title essay, which discusses the performing difficulties and interpretation questions involved in Beethoven's 9 symphonies. Also includes "On Conducting" and "The Symphony Since Beethoven," both attesting to the belief that art is at its best when an "exceedingly delicate balance is attained between the feeling and the intellect."
Customer Reviews:
Probably very good book but not a "general" read........2007-03-26
This book is for a specialized reading group (professional musicians, advanced degree students, etc., but not for the general reader.
5 Stars are not Enough!.......2005-09-06
This is a truly exciting book, and my hat is off to Dover for reprinting it. All the lucidity and committment that one hears in Weingartner's recorded performances is here translated into words that bring forth not only insights into his musical mind, but into the works which he discusses. Weingartner was one of the very few musicians who reveled in profundity and had little use for empty virtuosity (Schnabel, Furtwaengler and Landowska were some of the others). I think though, that some who are well acquainted with his recordings will find a few instances in which he disregards his own advice and follows a much freer interpretive course than what he prescribes. But then again, the greater the artist, the less he can fully pinpoint all of his gifts on page; rather, they are lived in performance.

Paul Hofmann, a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, offers a fine meditation on the Vienna Woods, a tract of gladed forest five times bigger than the combined boroughs of New York, geographically the last gasp of the Alps before Austria opens onto the great central European plain. In those forests, Hofmann tells us, lie the origins of many great works of the imagination: the later symphonies of Beethoven, several Schubert sonatas, Mozart's The Magic Flute, and, most famously, Richard Strauss's 1868 opera Tales from the Vienna Woods, which instilled in the Viennese a sense that the woods had to be protected from the growing city on their fringe. Thanks to the play of art and memory, the woods thrive today; as Hofmann remarks, "No other major European capital can boast such a large and safe recreational area."

A view of Vienna from a native........2004-04-03
I happened to pick up this book in an ebay auction after two visits there. Paul Hoffman is a Vienna native and has written
extensively about the city and his native land elsewhere. The book is unique in describing points of interest in the woods which surround Vienna on the south and west. Points of interest such as churches, monuments, restaurants, homes and palaces are described in the detail which only a native can. A good example
are facts about the suicide of Crown Prince Rudolph in the woods in 1889 which I have not found published elsewhere.
If you love Vienna, you'll love this little book.
Book Description
"Saint Beethoven!. . . . He was clad in somewhat untidy houseclothes, with a red woolen scarf wrapped round his waist; long, bushy grey hair hung in disorder from his head, and his gloomy, forbidding expression by no means tended to reassure. . . ."
When Wagner published the first collection of his writings he was pleased to admit how well he wrote, even when young. Historians and musicians ever since have agreed that some of his most important and revelatory works were written when he was first establishing his reputation in Paris and Dresden. Pilgrimage to Beethoven and Other Essays provides translations of the first two volumes of his Gesammelte Schriften (1871-1873). These works reveal how committed he was to emphasizing Germanic qualities in his music and define his opposition to the music of France and Italy.
In addition to his influential essay on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, this volume includes two early essays on Germanic myth—"The Wibelungen" and "The Nibelungen-Myth"—his homages to Carl Maria von Weber, and the complete text of his autobiographical A German Musician in Paris, with its famous "Pilgrimage to Beethoven."
The volume concludes with his "Plan of Organisation of a German National Theatre" (1849), founded upon Beethoven's moral music. Listeners "inspired by Beethoven's music have been more active and energetic citizens-of-State than those bewitched by Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti." Throughout these essays, as throughout his life, Wagner knew how to provoke.
This edition includes the complete volume 7 of the 1898 translation commissioned by the London Wagner Society.
Book Description
In Beethoven's Century: Essays on Composers and Themes, world-renowned musicologist Hugh Macdonald draws together many of his richest essays on music from Beethoven's time into the early twentieth century. The essays are here revised and updated, and some are printed in English for the first time. Beethoven's Century addresses perennial questions of what music meant to the composer and his audiences, how it was intended to be played, and how today's audiences can usefully approach it. Opening with a revealing analysis of Beethoven's not always generous regard for his listeners, the essays probe aspects of Schubert's musical personality, the brief friendship between Berlioz and Schumann, Liszt's abilities as a conductor, and Viennese views of Wagner as expressed by Hugo Wolf. Essays on comic opera and trends in French opera librettos in the late nineteenth century reflect the author's long-standing sympathy for French music, and strikingly eccentric personalities in the world of music, such as Paganini, Alkan, Skryabin, and Janácek, are brought to life. Beethoven's Century concludes with a wry look at some startling developments in early twentieth-century music that have often been overlooked. Hugh Macdonald has taught music at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and Glasgow, and since 1987 has been Avis H. Blewett Distinguished Professor of Music at Washington University, St. Louis. He has written books on Skryabin and Berlioz, and is a regular pre-concert speaker for the Boston and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras.

Excellent book on photoblogs; poor on setup instructions.......2007-06-13
I found this book to be a very good overview of photoblogs with plenty of online examples and great tips and techniques. I did not need to signup with Nexcess.net to setup my photoblog since I already have my own ISP with Movable Type 3.35 installed. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the templates and skins (offered as a free download from the book's website) to work, even though I followed the instructions step-by-step. The book's website has not been updated for a while and there's no documentation or forums to help potential photobloggers troubleshoot installation or blogging problems.
There are a lot of great photographers using MT for their photoblogs but there is a dearth of documentation on how to create a photoblog with MT. I was really hoping this book would feel this void.
This is a great book about photoblogs and is inspirational. Unless you signup with Nexcess.net, which is kind of expensive, I would recommend not using Movable Type to create your photoblog. There are a couple of other photoblog tools out there that seem easier to install and to customize. I would give this book three stars but for its lack of support for those who don't use the recommended ISP, I am giving it two stars.
Room for improvement.......2007-01-29
This book isn't bad. It covers a wealth of material and gets into a fair about of detail on how to set up a photoblog, mostly on the suggested Nexcess.net.
This is fine should you choose this route, as you will have all the information on how to do that.
What could help the reader is a better organization of the material presented to keep one from having to go back and forth between pages to take in the examples presented. This will probably happen in the next edition.
Other than that, I admire the author's talent, knowledge, and enthusiasm for photography and blogging.
Good initial ideas but then a let down.......2006-11-05
There were a couple of good ideas in the book but then I felt it became an installation guide for using Movable Type.
Great Photographer, Terrible Book.......2006-08-21
As someone who makes a living structuring information for maximum usability, I have to say that this book and the accompanying website are frustrating, maddening, and pretty much useless unless you're willing to sign up for the hosting deal with the author's suggested web host.
Some of the most glaring errors include:
1) Placing content that should be relegated to sidebars (i.e., the section on signing up for TypeKey authorization) right in the middle of crucial instructions for setting up Movable Type on your system. It breaks up the flow of information, and forces the reader to flip back and forth several times to ensure that she hasn't missed a crucial step.
2) Files at the accompanying website are only available as Windows executables. I'm a fairly savvy Mac user, so I knew enough to drag the .exe files to Stuffit Expander to open them, but how many other Mac users might miss this crucial step? Make the files available as .zip or .tar.gz files for maximum compatibility.
3) Workflow inefficiencies: how efficient is it that the reader is forced to create a new blog after installing the author's blog templates? Why can't these templates be applied to the default photo blog that is created when Movable Type is initially configured?
While I'm sure the rest of the book has some useful information -- I particularly liked Jamieson's photo assignments - I'm so thoroughly frustrated with the installation/configuration instructions and information design of the book that I can't help but give it a negative review.
This is but the first edition of the book - do yourself a favor and wait for version two, or check the website at createyourownphotoblog.com to see if an errata section is made available.
New to photo blogging and have a basic understanding of HTML then this book is for you.......2006-05-20
Photo blogging has been around for a couple years now and is starting to be recognized as a tool for photographers to draw attention to their work. If your already familiar with HTML then this book will make sense to you. If you are not familiar with HTML then this book will be difficult at times understanding the terminology and HTML coding.
There are some photography tips here that will be useful to the beginner photographer. It covers f stop, depth of field, exposure, the thirds rule and understanding composition. For the more experienced photographer there is nothing of substance as far as technique. However photography technique is not the true intention of this book.
The book discusses the basic demographic of a photo blog user and visitor and how to attract the desired demographic to your photo blog. The book also covers conceptual ideas about design and publishing of your blog.
Also covered are things like using tags within your site to get better rankings in search engines. The basic use of CSS. Flickr which is an online community for photo bloggers, design templates and uploading your blog to a hosting service, updating the photos, and basic user interface site security.
What this book does very well is cover the concept of photo blogging, how to setup a photo blog and different tools and photo blogging hosting sites. It contains ample snap shots of the different software discussed. It also has many outstanding photographs and if covers the subject of photo blogging from site concept to finished product very well (admittedly a blog site is never really complete).
The draw back to this book is that it assumes that you are using nexcess and the templates what you can download are fairly proprietary to nexcess. This can be difficult if you are using another hosting service and they do not support the types of templates you have created from the templates you downloaded using movable type interface rather then a WYSIWYG or other text editor.
In closing this book will be of great use to the photographer with a basic understanding of HTML and has an interest in web page/photo blog design. It is easy to read and is formatted very nicely.
