Ebert at his inimitable best.......2003-08-07

This is not a general book about movies, but a reprint of selected "Answer Man" columns. As such, though there is some useful information about film and production techniques and quite a lot on the furor over letterboxing, the most interesting parts of the book allow us to relieve specific moments in recent movie history, for instance, getting glimpses into the thought patterns of fans before, during, and after "Water World."

I would have liked a little more context to some of the columns; after all, some of the hot topics of 1996 are all but forgotten today. Also, I always thought of Ebert as an extreme political conservative, in opposition to his late partner, the liberal Gene Siskel. So how come he reprints hate letters from political conservatives?

Roger knows it all.......2002-08-29

A terrific book, both for Roger Ebert's crisp and witty writing, his knowledge of the subject, and the information about films and filmmaking. Drawn from Ebert's must-read "Ask the Movie Man" section of his annual Film Guide series and his newspaper/internet column. Highly recommended.

Waiting for the sequel.......2001-08-17

Quite informative and not at all simply a "bathroom read" as one reviewer here has opined. The book covers topics from A to Z (E.g. "Actors", "Fireballs", "Talking in the Movies"). However, if your particular interest is "Goofs", the basics are covered (E.g "Bloopers", "Boom mikes") but you'll find much more for specific movies at the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com). Another reviewer here states the index could be better. I agree. The index seems to be inconsistent, listing only some of the book's topics, but lots of movie titles and actors. For example, a question on the book jackets asks" Why don't movie actors wear seatbelts?". Good luck finding the answer easily. A handful of the movies chosen for inclusion may seem obscure, but this is still an entertaining book. And you'll also find out a little more about Ebert's way of thinking.

Enjoyable, quick read.......2000-06-21

I tore through this quick reader the same day it arrived (while staying home sick from work.) It put a smile on my face, and made me want to see or re-see a bunch of movies.

The book is pulled together bits of a newspaper Q&A style column, and therefore comes off overall a bit disjointed. I don't care for the somewhat arbitrary organization of the excerpts, but of course, I can't come up with a better way -- related Q&A's are grouped together under general categories (ie "Minnesotans and Mississippians" and "Injuries") and then the categories are alphabetized.

Dispite these problems, I enjoyed the book.

Entertaining, but ..........1999-09-26

I have always enjoyed Ebert's lucid and engaging writing. He answers questions on a wide range of topics of interest to movie buffs. As he freely admits, however, some of the questions were fabricated where he felt "the need comes upon me to answer a question I have not been asked." There seem to be a lot of questions from the same few characters, too, especially one Andy Ihnatko of Westwood, Mass. And as much as I like the book, I have some doubts about Mr. Ebert's scholarship. On page 61, he says that Japanese term for the bittersweet awareness of transient things is "nolo con aware," when in fact it is "mono no aware" (the Japanese don't even use "L" their language). Whenever I find I one factual error in a book, I start to wonder how many more are in it.

Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs. A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. joe diorio, is an early inspiration to lovers of great guitar fusion. you might say what kind of person listens to fusion, well such greats as reb beach of winger, and john petrucci of dream theater, and george lynch of dokken. i would love to get a copy of his earlier book intervallic designs. if you have any information please help.

Having been a subscriber to Fingerstyle guitar player magazine (for 5 years), Howard's articles were the most clear and complete. This book is a continuation of that style.

Great book.......2007-05-04

These jazz standards are for the most part direct arrangements in the original key, arrangements in which virtually every note is a complex jazz chord. No free "lead" riffs here. Just solid beautiful music. This is definately a five star book.

I do want to comment on the other reviewer's remark that it didn't get 5 stars because it had no CD. Nowhere on the book or on amazon is a CD promised. The reviewer knew it had no CD when he bought it and yet penalizes the book. What logic! It's like buying a Gibson L-5 guitar and then lowering the rating because it didn't come with an amplifier (though one was never offered in the first place)!

For Advanced Players..........2006-08-01

Full disclosure: I am a player of moderate ability, who is just getting into jazz. The book is as advertised: "...contains 35 professional chord/melody arrangements for solo guitar." Yes, these arrangements are written for a professional player; in other words, if you can easily articulate four or more different, difficult jazz chord changes per bar of music, this work is for you. The tablature appears accurate, and the chord harmonization is very tasty. Just be prepared for a very difficult slog if you are not prepared for this level of work. If you are, the music is quite beautiful and will inspire you to create your own reharmonizations of famous standards. Song choice here is excellent. This would have received five stars if the publisher had included a CD recording of the pieces, both slow and at tempo versions.

Selected as workbook for UC Santa Cruz class.......2007-01-04

For the future presentations of the University of California Extension Sarbanes-Oxley class, we selected this volume and CDROM as the workbook. The earlier textbook was too high-level and theoretical. The head of the Finance and Accounting department was quick to approve the change. The participants in the class include both accounting and IT professionals; they will appreciate the very practical nature of this volume.

Toolkit That More Than Pays for Itself.......2005-09-20

One of the unintended consequences of subscribing to a Sarbanes-Oxley Listserv is seeing how many auditors, and companies, are struggling with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. There has been a lot of uncertainty for auditors, and companies, as what is required and how to go about setting up an effective audit plan and making compliance repeatable, sustainable reality. I have seen more calls of help for toolsets in this Listserv than I wish there were, but that has been the reality. However, there is now an outstanding resource to help external, internal auditors, and companies get their acts together by streamlining the 404 compliance process.

Michael Ramos, author of the excellent "How to Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404: Assessing the Effectiveness of Internal Control", has now written "The Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 Implementation Toolkit: Practice Aids for Managers and Auditors" (357 pages, John Wiley and Sons, 2005, ISBN 0471712256. This is not a book to sit down and read. This is a book that, from cover to cover, provides worksheets, sample documents, and decision criteria for their use. It is a book that comes with a CD-ROM of the entire documentation contents that will more than pay for itself from the first day you have it in your hands.

It is hard to look at a book like this and say "I like or do not like what the author has to say", or that "I really like the author's writing style". What you need to look at in deciding whether or not to purchase this book, is a series of questions.

Do you have to conduct Section 404 audits as part of an external audit or as part of a control self-assessment? Do you need ready to go and completely customizable templates to help you in this process? Do you want to use tools developed by an experienced Certified Public Accountant, instead of having to sit down and spend days on end developing your own toolsets and work paper templates? How much non-billable time are you willing to spend developing these tools? Do you want an easy to understand methodology that can easily be taught and passed on to other employees as part of a knowledge transfer and enablement program?

If you are like me, these questions will give you the easy answer of "Yes!". All of the documents provided on the CD ROM are in word format, and the disk also contains a Microsoft Word document viewer and a copy of Open Office. Each form comes with a purpose statement to understand its use, as well as instructions on how to use them. Ramos starts with the general work program and takes the process all the way to the end with management reports. There is also a sample general audit program.

Who Should Read This Book

The purchase of this book should be a no-brainer for internal and external auditors, managers, and consultants doing SarBox work. I add this latter group because there are too many consultants out there who are telling clients things that are not quite accurate. This book should help them provide better services.
