Book Description
A groundbreaking collection of critical reflections on the development of gay and lesbian film.

queer pix.......1999-09-26
Altho the cover has that generic early-90s multiculti/ACTUP design look (EEK!) there's actually alot of good material in here. Rather than the usual collections of grad student mush, many of the writers actually know gay media from the inside (even if some info is dated now). Especcially good as an antidote to the feature film/hollywoodization of gay cinema.
Too much stuff, alot of weaker essays (and SCARY "art") could have been omitted, and there's an incestuous NY/academic/PC mafia that gets old, but it still seems like a really useful document.

Can we say Gay Studies Bible????.......2002-01-17
For too long, straight men have controlled how we watch and analyze film and video. Then, Laura Mulvey gave us an idea how women view things/use their gaze. Finally, a group of academics are theorizing how gays and lesbians "ga(y)ze". This book has great representation from men of color and women. At the end of every essay, experts debate articles with the authors, so you get an even broader discussion of the work. When I was in college, professors had this book on their reading lists all the time. I found myself being able to quote from this book all the time. Even activists and other academics quote from this book all the time. And I love the title with its campiness and double entendre. The name of the editors is equally clever. Anybody who is truly interested in gay and lesbians studies must buy and read this anthology!
theory heads from outer-space.......1999-09-26
Okay, I admit: the title sounds like a cosmetics manual. But it's really a collection of essays from a NYC conference about 10 years ago. For some reason, the men (Kobena Mercer, Richard Fung) are much better. They seem to know more about work being made. The women (DeLauretis, Judith Mayne) are interesting, but maybe too academic: too much theorizing based on too little material, focus on not-so-good historical (Dorothy Arzner) and more recent (Sheila McLaughlin) filmmakers makes it seem out of touch. Totally misses any of the more recent queer/grrl media, which had begun to surface by that time.
Some of the discussions add a bit of "grit" otherwise missing from the all-too-polished talks.
You'd never guess, from the volume, much of anything about the queer media explosion about to happen.

Book Description
Syndicated gay humorist Kevin Isom is back—with more hilarious and thought-provoking takes on queer life. In this follow-up to his book Tongue in Cheek and Other Places: A Seriously Humorous Look at Queer Life, Isom takes a cue from his latest interest—couples dancing—and looks at queer life as a dance. From chapters like Couples Waltz (a mostly upbeat dance with occasional dips and unexpected turns) to Last Tango (when your dance partnership has exceeded its sell-by date), and from Lead or Follow (stereotypes just can’t boogie) to Queer as Polka (sometimes it’s just plain odd), Isom shows us a Dancin’ Queen who knows how to get into the gay groove. Tap your toe to the rhythm, and read on, baby!
Customer Reviews:
Good book, nice cover.......2002-01-29
Isom's second collection of stories was just as funny as the first one. They're quick witted and dry and can elicit a huge belly laugh or just a chuckle. But it was an enjoyable read. And the cowboy on the front, yummmy.....
A Must Read!.......2001-09-22
I received this book the other day and couldn't put it down. You will "find" yourself on many pages of this book. Kevin is a very talented writer who sheds a new light on our lifestyle. A must read!
Great book for a present.......2001-07-24
I bought this book for my brother's (who's gay) birthday, and he loved it! The shortness of the essays made it quick to read and he read out entire ones to me over the telephone, and I laughed at quite a few parts myself. The whole leading/following dance thing is also applicable to straight people too!
A good buy and a good laugh.

Book Description
Humorist Kevin Isom takes on issues ranging from gay marriage—he says do it for the gifts—to show tunes—is there really a gene? His take is humorous and upbeat. But Isom doesn’t hesitate to skewer the absurd, like the Defense of Marriage Act—were we protecting marriage from Saddam Hussein?—and trends like chest shaving—can we talk trimmed, not shaved?

Boy, this made me laugh!.......2002-01-29
Bought this book for my partner as gift and he loved it! So I had to read it as well and Mr. Isom has a gifted way of making the mundane funny. "Gay power" is really live and kicking with this one. Buy it, definitely!
Funny and so true........2000-04-26
Kevin Isom has a great eye for life's absurdities, and a knack for skewering hypocrites and posers. He's also not above poking a little fun at himself, particularly when it comes to his own dating history. His observations are so funny, precisely because they are SO true. You'll recognize yourself in this book.
Hysterically funny and so true.......2000-04-19
It's nice to see a really happy gay person writing about our lives, and making fun of the silly gay AND straight stuff. This is a must read for every gay person--and our straight friends. It'll keep you laughing around the water cooler at the office...

Book Description
This comprehensive study of French basse continue practice supplements an already sizeable body of literature on thoroughbass accompaniment, the emphasis of which has clearly been on Italian and German theoretical works. The numerous French accompaniment treatises written during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries seem to have been, with only a few choice exceptions, unjustifiably dismissed by many modern scholars as little more than harmonic tutors, and the discipline of musicology - particularly as it relates to historical performance practice - has definitely suffered as a result. These works certainly do not deserve such a fate, for they provide not only unique documentation of French harmonic theory as it evolved over the course of more than a century, but a wealth of important information regarding seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French performance practice as well. It is the aim of this study to give as full an accounting as possible of basse continue performance as it is documented in the numerous seventeenth- and eighteenth-century treatises produced in France, beginning with Nicolas Fleury's 'Méthode pour apprendre facilement à toucher le théorbe sur la basse-continüe'(1660) and continuing through Pierre-Joseph Roussier's Traité des accords, et de leur succession [...] (1764) and his 'L'harmonie pratique, ou exemples pour le Traité des accords' (1775). The issues dealt with in the treatises are treated systematically, and provide the framework for the entire study.

It's Magic.......2007-03-20
For anyone who has ever been or still is fascinated by Siegfried and Roy this is the book to read. It's out of print so I think the only place you can get it is through Amazon. The book has lots of pictures and is writen as though Siegfried and Roy were speaking to you about their experiences. It traces their childhoods, how they met, and how they rose to stardom. It ends with the years at the Mirage and before Roy's accident in 2003. Hopefully there will be a second book--their memoirs. I highly recommended this book for Siegfried and Roy fans and fans to be!
Mastering the impossible and their destiny.......2000-07-02
Great book - a definite if you're a fan. There are lots of photos, but lots of text to really follow their journey with them - Read it and you'll appreciate the hopefulness they bring us all - can't wait to go see the show again. Would buy this book again - I bought one for me, one for a gift - it's super!
A must read book for Siegfried and Roy Fan's!!.......1998-09-17
This is wonderful book that describes the high's and low's in the lives of Siegfried and Roy. It is a very heartwarming book. It shows to others that dreams can come true if you just hold on to your beliefs. The road to fame and fortune had been a very hard and long road for these really special people. They show over and over again that not compromising your values does pay off. The book is great for all. We read it with our kids and they liked it very much. Just as their show it is appropriate for all ages. Especially read it before you see their show and you will appreciate it all the more. Read the book and experience the magic!!

Jim Rogers became a Wall Street legend when he and George Soros founded the Quantum Fund. This is the fascinating story of his 1990 investing trip around the world by motorcycle, with many tidbits of hard-headed advice for investing in foreign markets.
Book Description
Legendary investor Jim Rogers gives us his view of the world on a twenty-two-month, fifty-two-country motorcycle odyssey in his bestselling business/adventure book,
Investment Biker, which has already sold more than 200,000 copies.
Before you invest another dollar anywhere in the world (including the United States), read this book by the man Time magazine calls “the Indiana Jones of finance.”
Jim Rogers became a Wall Street legend when he co-founded the Quantum Fund.
Investment Biker is the fascinating story of Rogers’s global motorcycle journey/investing trip, with hardheaded advice on the current state and future direction of international economies that will guide and inspire investors interested in foreign markets.
Customer Reviews:
Jim Rogers Cycles Money.......2007-05-15
I read this a few years ago and gave it to someone who has enjoyed motorcycles and has been investing for years. We both gained from reading it.
I don't bike and am relatively new to investing, but both of us found the adventure yarn interesting and a good way to get a better appreciation of world economies. An easy entertaining way to gain an understanding of what differentiates the successful (macro and micro) from the types that will always be in survival mode.
stellar tour.......2007-01-16
Investment Biker is a fascinating book for anyone interested in biking, world history, or economics. It's one of those you hate to put down, as you are eager to see what challenges Jim and his friend were to encounter next. It's a wonder they survived, but thank God they did!
An inspirational book about a journey most of us would love to take... including some shrewd finance insights.......2006-12-21
Who hasn't wanted to take a trip ALL around the world. Jim Rogers did, on a motorbike and documented it in this fine book. I definately see it though as a travel / adventure book though rather than something that's much about finance. He share's some insights, some of his wisdom and thinking process (that are not always right) around investment, history, politics and economics. He spent 22 months on the road, criss-crossing the globe on a motorbike with his girlfriend (brave woman!), and what an adventure he had. Remember, a lot of these countries werent all that open to foreigners. Most of you reading this will know Rogers, he made a fortune trading the financial markets with George Soros and retired at the age of 37 and is now a lecturer, author, investor, writer and adventurer. Hats off to him for doing things he loves.
If you're looking though for a guide how to invest in financial markets or even the developing economies you wont find it here. Perhaps you may like to check out some of the work by Mark Mobius. Rogers website has video cams from his most recent trip, taken from all around the world and are highly recommended (and inspirational) viewing.
Like most people, I'd love to do an adventure like this, and, unfortunately, many of the countries he traveled through are now just poor copies of the west. This book though is a page turner and you dont have to have a knowledge (or even interest) in finance and economics to enjoy it.
Highly recommended,
Required reading!.......2006-12-08
This should be required reading for any economics course! (or for global investing ...of course ;) My eyes are opened. Jim has accomplished something that may never be repeated. He completed an amazing land journey through territories of every kind on earth. He experienced the people, the lifestyles, the local markets, the capital markets, the currency markets and the black markets of the world. His experience relates cause and effect of political and economic policies of over fifty countries. He has travelled our global economic history and laid it all down in an clear, concise and exciting text that will have you churning paper as you roar through it.
I learned alot. I want more!
Thank you!
A good read, lots to think about . . . .......2006-11-20
From March of 1990 to August of 1992, Jim Rogers and his friend Tabitha took a marathon motorcycle trip on two BMW motorcycles. By the end, they had logged over 65,000 miles on each bike, and had traveled through Europe, the Middle East, Nepal, China, Siberia, Russia, Europe (again), western & southern Africa, three-quarters of the edge of Australia, South America, Central America, and North America.
The record of this extraordinary trip, told from the perspective of Jim Rogers, is _Investment Biker: Around the World with Jim Rogers_.
Jim Rogers made a fortune on Wall Street in the 1980s when he & George Soros ran the Quantum Fund. He is interested in international investing, and the story is definitely told from the perspective of someone who is interested in investing and making money. This sometimes makes the book slow and Rogers' focus a bit single-minded.
On the positive side, Rogers gives brief historical backgrounds of most of the places he visits, and he is one of those few authors who describes not just what a place is like right now, but what direction it seems to be going. As he goes through various locales, he often stops by local banks and stock markets to see if he can invest, but he also stays are regular places, eats regular food, and talks to regular people. It is clear that his large cash reserves made the trip much easier than it might have been otherwise, but at the same time many of the risks, adverse conditions, and long days were things that no amount of cash could help, and he & Tabitha still persevered.
One of the things I liked a lot about this book were Rogers' observations about the people and countries along the way. His discussion about health (especially women's health) in Siberia was eye-opening and hair-raising, his observations about the historical economics and current vivacity of different Southern & Central American countries are thought provoking, and his comments about the difference in temperament between those in the capitals of the U.S. and Canada ("joiners and backslappers") versus those in the sparsely settled hinterlands ("loners and mavericks") are very true.
There are parts of the book where it is quite slow, especially the section where they are traveling through sub-Saharan Africa. I really wish there had been more pictures.
Rogers writes that above almost all else, his trip taught him that mankind as a whole will find a way to adapt and persevere in almost any situation. His long-term outlook is very optimistic, but his short-term expectations are both pessimistic and a bit short-sighted. While Rogers does understand just how quickly the world can change, he does not seem to understand how long the countervailing force of inertia can keep things the same.
All in all, a very eye-opening & thought-provoking book. DON'T read it if you are looking for a 100% guaranteed guide to either travel or investing, but DO read it if you are looking for an engaging story about a multi-year trip that most of us would never have the time or inclination for, but that is still fun to read about.
