Boston blueblood Charlotte Vale has led an unhappy, sheltered life. After her extreme makeover, the new Charlotte tests her mettle by embarking on a cruise-and finds herself in a torrid love affair with a married man which ends at the conclusion of the voyage. But only then can the real journey begin, as Charlotte is forced to navigate a new life for herself. While Now, Voyager is a tear-jerking romance, it is at the same time the empowering story of a woman who finds the strength to chart her own course in life; who discovers love, sex, and even motherhood outside of marriage; and who learns that men are, ultimately, dispensable in the quest for happiness and fulfillment.
Olive Higgins Prouty (1882–1974), like many of her characters a wealthy Bostonian, was the author of ten novels, including Stella Dallas (1923), which became the basis for three films and a long-running radio serial. A graduate of Smith College, Prouty endowed a writer's scholarship at Smith that was received by Sylvia Plath, who later portrayed her patron unflatteringly in The Bell Jar.

"Now, Voyager" is a remarkable publishing event. Here is a timeless tale of love and transformation that first appeared 64 years ago, instantly became a best-seller, went through God only knows how many reprintings before sliding slowly into near-obscurity, along with its author, Olive Higgins Prouty, today all but forgotten. Neither the author nor her book deserved this sorry end, and The Feminist Press is to be congratulated for re-publishing "Now, Voyager." The publisher pigeonholes this novel as "pulp" writing, a sometimes derogatory term implying fiction that is popular but not very well written, and certainly not enduring literature. This novel is in fact anything but "pulp" fiction: "Now, Voyager" is a story brilliantly conceived, and the reader who takes a chance on this novel will be repaid with sheer exhilaration as the text soars on every page with rare lyricism and hauntingly beautiful passages.
Here's a typical sampler of Prouty's art:
"The pointed pinnacles of the cathedral loomed up above the heterogeneous mass of buildings surrounding it like the pointed tops of spruce above deciduous trees of various varieties. The buildings crowded down to a string of small boats at the water's edge. The blue bay was full of rippling reflections-sails, roofs, pinnacles, and mountain-tops. The air was full of sunshine, breezes, gulls and gulls' calls. The tenders were already plying between the liner and the shore. Other little boats were chugging here and there, plying through the reflections, trailing long wakes of watered silk."
The new edition is a faithful rendition of the original novel. The only changes have been the addition of a foreword and afterword and chapter titles. Misprints in the reprinted edition, not present in the original text, are irritating but fortunately rare. There have been small changes in typography that are indeed helpful in bringing the typography up to a more easily readable modern standard. The republished paperback and hardcover versions are identical, but the paperback has added a thumbnail biography of Prouty and its cover displays a publicity still from the well-known film with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid.
While overpriced, the hardcover edition has a binding and cover that are much more robust than those of the original 1941 edition; fittingly, this new hardcover "Now, Voyager" will last for generations. (A pristine first edition of "Now, Voyager", if you can find one, sells for over $1000.)
A forecast of things to come.......2005-04-16
Olive Higgins Prouty would not have appreciated her books being regarded as pulp! But she would have been happy, I think, knowing that people were reading them again and enjoying them.
She is one of those cases where a novelist could be extremely popular in her own lifetime and then, almost forgotten. Meanwhile the movies made from her books (including STELLA DALLAS and NOW VOYAGER) show how original and striking her plots were, how unique she was. Sylvia Plath, who wrote her many flattering, almost gushing letters so long as Prouty was giving her money, was vicious about her in private (and in the pages of THE BELL JAR, in which Prouty appears as a menacing, elderly Lesbian, almost like She-Lob at spider). It's funny how the encounter between Plath and Prouty has taken on mythic proportions, and how indeed Prouty's best work approaches thast of Plath in terms of its insight into the human condition, especially of suffering, illness, pain and madness. Anyone who reads NOW VOYAGER, or its "prequel," LISA VALE will see that Prouty was intimately familiar with neurosis. Plath might have been taken aback had she realized that Prouty herself had been hospitalized for mental illness when she was a teenager, way back at the turn of the century. In many ways, Prouty's whole life foreshadowed Plath's. We note in NOW VOYAGER the way that Charlotte's stifled New England ways explode when she encounters the debonair, sexy European man who turns her on to Lawrentian sexuality and rebellion--Sylvia and Ted much?
Now if only someone would reprint (among others) WHITE FAWN, HOME PORT, GOOD SPORTS and PENCIL SHAVINGS! Olive Higgins Prouty could write and it's time the world realized it.

Max Steiner's contribution to the formulation of early Hollywood scoring techniques is significant, particularly through his music for King Kong (1933) and The Informer (1935). The Academy Award winning score for Now, Voyager reflects the maturation of the composer's understanding of the dramatic function of music in film. The primary resources incorporated in the analysis include, from the Max Steiner collection at Brigham Young University, Steiner's letters and scrapbooks and his unpublished autobiography Notes to You. In addition to contributing to the composer's own perspective on the music for this film and on scoring practice in general, these papers contribute to a broader debate about how films are interpreted and the part music plays in these schemes of criticism. This study of the film score occurs within the broader theoretical and historical debates currently characterizing film musicology and explores, from varied perspectives, how the score is meaningful and important to the film. Devoted to a single score, this study brings together for analysis all the contingent factors in the score's creation, use, and reception and will appeal to film music scholars and to scholars of music and of film. The scope of the analysis will also interest scholars involved in music in multi-disciplinary art forms, feminist musicologists and film scholars, and students of musical theater. Separate chapters discuss Steiner's musical background, his technique of film scoring, historical and critical contexts of the film, the music and its context, and an analysis of the score. Musical examples illustrate the text and an appendix of selected film scores by Steiner is included along with a selected bibliography.

A pleasure!.......2000-05-04
After seeing the Bette Davis movie made from this novel many years ago, I wanted to read the book right away!It was not an easy task to find it but certainly worth all the waiting! - Prouty writes so well,so fluidly (I would be very happy with myself if I could write so effortlessly) maybe a little like the too easy romance novels of nowadays but she has a great way to describe characters and feelings. She gets you very interested in this peculiar story. The 1942 movie is, as described by other reviewers before me, very good and what tickles me so, it's when you read the novel, you wonder if there would have been other choices than Davis or Henreid, or Gladys Cooper for actors. They were so well cast that it makes you feel like reading those books written AFTER the movie! Now Voyager is the kind of book you read eagerly and put down wanting more...
Magnificent, romantic, hopeful.......2000-01-21
"Now, Voyager" is the wonderful story of lonely, repressed, emotionally-starved Charlotte Vale, the youngest daughter of an imperious Boston matriarch. She yearns to break free from the torment of her life and with the help of a caring psychiatrist, gains the stability to do so. During an ocean voyage, she falls in love with a married man, then commits her life to helping others. Beautifully written, the type of book one curls up with on a cold night, rich and rewarding, a must for anyone who has ever allowed themselves to be frightened by the difficulties of life. The marvelous 1942 movie with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid is justifiably famous.
A book to reread when you feel lonely and alone........1997-11-06
Having seen the 1942 movie with Bette Davis won't spoil your enjoyment of this book. With one exception the film was pretty faithful to the novel, which follows a respressed spinster as she breaks free of her mother's dominance and finds a type of love for herself.

good stuff about book: **it covers ALL the indian defenses from white's point of view, including d4,c4,Nc3, and d4,c4,Nf3 openings (no other book does this) **it is organized so that a complete repetoire against the indian defenses is included in the book (the authors did a good job of making sure the the reader will not get lost in a transposition and will not need to gather information from other sources to play the recommended lines) **it covers more than just the indian defenses. it also covers: the dutch (the recommendation is 1.d4 f5 2.Nc3), 1.d4 d6 and 1.d4 g6 (the recommendation against each is 2.e4, leading to the pirc and the modern, respectively), the budapest and fajarowich gambits (1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5!? 3.dxe5 Ng4 and 3. ...Ne4, the recommendation is 4.Nh3 for the budapest and 4.a3 for the fajarowich), assorted benonis (including the czech and snake benonis), the old indian defense, the englund gambit (1.d4 e5), the clarendon court (1.d4 c5 2.d5 f5), queen's fianchetto defense (1.d4 b6), and others
bad stuff about book: **it is a repetoire book so some of the lines might not be your style, but you still must play them as no other lines are provided **a lot of information and analysis is presented, which can make it hard to work through
general stuff about book: **the information is presented in game format instead of tree format (which actually why it can be hard to work through) **you must play 1.d4 and 2.c4 in order to stay within the recommended repetoire (i.e., if you play Nf3 on your first or second moves, you might reach positions not covered in this book)
this book is well worth buying if you are looking to play 1.d4. it has really helped a great deal with my chess openings.
(just a note: Burgess and Pederson also have a book in the format of this one but on the queen's gambit instead of the indian defenses, it's called The Queen's Gambit for the Attacking Player, it's worth looking into even though it is a few years old)

Excellent text and guide to computer solutions........1999-07-06
I used Anderson and Sweeney's text in an MBA quatitative analysis course at the University of Arkansas. Anderson and Sweeney also provide a study guide and solutions manual which are very helpful. A computer program called the Management Scientist is available which allows you to solve linear programming as well as other operational research problems. Many problems are solved using Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft's Excel Solver are presented. Overall, it is a excellent learning tool.

No reference to real life cases. No pictures. The book has a "Make money forget quality" (but make a very good effor in pretending you care) written all over it. What a shame Thomson now Cengage Learning. But lots of $ that's for sure.
