Book Description
Diminutive Mickey Rooney has been in show business for more than 80 years as actor, producer, writer, composer, and director. His still-active career spans vaudeville, radio, television, the stage, and movies such as It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Black Stallion, and The Bridges at Toko-Ri. He won two Golden Globes and an Emmy and has received or been nominated for many other awards. From leading a 17-piece band to writing a novel, Rooney has been dispensing earthy wisdom and good humor in the public eye for many decades.
Part biography and part reference tool, this richly illustrated work covers Rooney's life from his birth in 1920 and first stage appearance 16 months later to his television and film appearances in 2004. It discusses both his professional and personal life and includes information drawn from interviews with his peers, including Spring Byington, Jackie Cooper, and Ann Rutherford. Five appendices conclude the work: a detailed filmography of his more than 170 features and 65 shorts, each listing credits and a brief commentary, plus assorted reviews; listings of all his radio, television, and stage work; and a discography of his recorded work.

Music Business Handbook and Career Guide
ASIN: 0028647319 |
Book Description
This book traces the difficulties all rockers have faced dealing with bad contracts, personnel problems, litigious fans, and crooked managers and accountants. Some of the stories told here include Elvis Presley's estate's struggle to protect its right to his name and image; the Beatles' lawsuits that kept them from issuing any new material for decades; and 2 Live Crew's battle with the Supreme Court over their right to parody an existing song.
Customer Reviews:
Glad I Bought This For Class ý Very Useful.......2003-10-29
I bought this book for a course I'm taking about the music business and after reading it, I'm so glad I did. It's an easy read since it's broken into several chapters...each about a particular musician or group. The chapters tell the story of a legal battle or a deal gone terribly wrong. It illustrates the pitfalls that lay before artists when it comes to publicity, trademarks, estate planning, merchandising, copyright infringement, royalty claims, publishing, bankruptcy, and so much more. I particularly enjoyed the stories about Elvis Presley, Billy Joel, The Beatles, and Judas Priest. A terrific addition to your personal library.
So sue me!!.......2001-08-10
Nothing says "big business" like a good lawsuit or two... and here's a book that's full of them. Whether it's Billy Joel suing his brother-in-law (who was also his business manager), the Shirelles suing George Harrison, the Beatles suing each other, or some hick parents suing Judas Priest for "causing" their kids to commit suicide (even though they came from physically violent homes), it's all fun and games in the rock and roll courtroom. Most of these are fairly well-known cases, but Soocher's light-handed style lends itself to a quick read. He doesn't get hung up on minutae, and keeps the narrative down to a minimum (although conversely, he also has a genteel streak wherein he sometimes alludes to lurid incidents without fully explaining them, which can get irksome...) Censorship comes up in a few of these cases, but mostly it's all about money, money, money, with a little concern for intellectual property thrown in for good measure. Oddly enough, I found George Michael's lawsuit against Sony to be one of the more interesting chapters in this book -- maybe just because it was one of the least familiar cases. At any rate, if you want to keep your illusions about showbiz intact, you might wanna veer away from this one. If, on the other hand, you're curious about what makes a multi-million dollar contract tick, then snap it up.
Good.......1999-12-22
A better book that deals with rock legal/economic matters is ROCKONOMICS. A lot, if not most, of the Beatles stuff, for instance, that are in this book are in that book, but better written. Nonetheless, this book had stuff I hadn't known about before, and it confirms what Pete Townshend said in "Rolling Stone" when it was pointed out to him that he had been friendly with a lot of English aristocrats, "Aristocrats are supposed to be real sh**s. But I don't think I met even one who was a real sh**. Whereas, in the music business, I could introduce you to a THOUSAND sh**s! " This book is a good study of those types.
Not for the faint of heart...for musicians.......1999-03-20
If you have an interest in music, law, business or any combination, this is a fascinating book.
Anyone thinking of getting into the music biz MUST read this. All the pitfalls, dangers, stupid moves that one could encounter are told in harrowing style.
From the smallest fry to the biggest names, legal missteps are illustrated in a VERY readable style by an attorney. You won't believe these stories, stranger than fiction.
I couldn't put this down.

RPG.......2007-09-03
A game in that whole White Wolf family. This one is a little lighter in tone, being set in and amonster the world and peoples of faerie and the fey. A lot of sneaking around and fooling the mortals, and hopefully not being disappeared by mages, eaten by werewolves or tormented by vampires.
Create myths in your lunch hour!.......2004-06-01
I may be biased, but this is possibly my favourite role-playing game. Firstly, the subject matter appeals to me. The protagonists are fairies, magical creatures. They are hosted within not-quite ordinary people (it's a simbiotic relationship), and they live on Glamour. That translates as Fun, Exciting and Interesting Stuff. Much of the action of the game - from fighting dragons to thwarting evil barons - takes place in what the rest of the world would consider the Changelings' collective imagination. That's right, it's a giant game of make-believe. The default theme is a sort of medieval feudalism revival, but it's not the only possible one. The last point of note is that the chapter on how to run a game suggests using the basic myth structure. In this way the children (as many of the characters are) can defeat the monster, symbollicly descend to the underworld, pass through their trials, and be back in time for dinner. As an added bonus, the rules are well set out and fairly easy to find.
It's all about keeping imagination alive.
changling.......2002-07-25
An excellent read. much better written then many other rpg's and much more thought out. as you read more suppliments the game gets more elaborate and thrilling.
Best White Wolf Game!!!.......2002-04-07
Forget the others. This is the one. The artwork is great, the descriptions and settings are great. The magic system IS a bit ambiguous, but who cares? It's not an impossible task to work SOMETHING out and your creative investment is well worth it. I haven't played with the next edition, but the artwork isn't nearly as good, and I get the feeling that the only reason they have a new edition at all is to make the system less all-inclusive, to sell supplements. You don't even really need to buy any of the books besides this one, especially if you have the Player's Guide to another WW game. Get out of your deep dark danky dungeons of despair for one night and give this one a shot. Buy before they've all disappeared!
enjoyable with some small flaws.......1997-02-08
Changeling: the Dreaming has many virtues and a few flaws.
White Wolf has done it again. Their latest effort has many virtues. The background is wonderful and full of suprises. The blend of old stories with modern settings has many opportunities for fun and exciting role-playing. The character types are very interesting and varied. The artwork throughout the book is excellent and all of the pages are in full color. There are a couple of flaws. The first is many aspects of the game are very ambigious. A great deal of interpretation is needed in many places. The system for glamour (magic) given uses cards and is very cumbersome. The rest of the system is standard White Wolf fare. I would reccomend buying this game because it is a lot of fun to play. The player's guide (sold seperately) help clear up many aspects of the game and is almost a neccessity.

Protecting Public Health and the Environment: Implementing The Precautionary Principle
ASIN: 0750646837 |
Book Description
This book challenges the claim that the precautionary principle is an appropriate guide to public policy decision-making in the face of uncertainty.
The precautionary principle is frequently invoked as a justification for regulating human activities. From bans on the use of growth hormones in cattle to restrictions on children's playground activities, precautionary thinking seems to be taking over our lives. As the contributors to this book show, such an approach is of dubious utility and may even be counterproductive.
This is a timely and important contribution to the debate on how to manage risk in the modern world.
The editor, Julian Morris, is Director of the Environment and Technology Programme at the Institute of Economic Affairs in London. He has written widely on issues relating to environmental protection and technological development.
Up to date discussion of current issues and scientific controversies.
Challenges the claim that the 'precautionary principle' is an appropriate guide to public policy decisions.

Customer Reviews:
This book is excellent - highly recommended.......2006-01-08
There are a lot of very useful details in this book. These details are very important, for the persons that "know" (or believe that they know) what is operational risk.
Dimitris Chorafas is a very experienced person. Since 1961, he has advised financial institutions and industrial corporations in strategic planning, risk management, computers and communications systems, and internal controls. Graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Paris, and the Technical University of Athens
Financial institutions which have sought his assistance include the Union Bank of Switzerland, Bank Vontobel, CEDEL, the Bank of Scotland, Credit Agricole, Österreichische Länderbank (Bank Austria), First Austrian Bank, Commerzbank, Dresdner Bank, Mid-Med Bank, Demir Bank, Banca Nazionale dell'Agricoltura, Istituto Bancario Italiano, Credito Commerciale and Banca Provinciale Lombarda.
Among multinational corporations Dr Chorafas has worked as consultant to top management, are: General Electric-Bull, Univac, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corp, Olivetti, Nestlé, Omega, Italcementi, Italmobiliare, AEG-Telefunken, Olympia, Osram, Antar, Pechiney, the American Management Association and host of other client firms in Europe and the United States.
Dr Chorafas has served on the faculty of the Catholic University of America and as visiting professor at Washington State University, George Washington University, University of Vermont, University of Florida, and Georgia Institute of Technology. Also, the University of Alberta, Ecole d'Etudes Industrielles de l'Université de Genève, and Technical University of Karlsruhe.
More than 6,000 banking, industrial and government executives have participated in his seminars in the United States, England, Germany, other European countries, Asia and Latin America.
Impractical and long winded diatrabe.......2004-09-09
What I wanted:
1] Definition of Operational risk
2] Basel II standard explained in easy English
3] Flowchart for how to go about dealing with it
4] Some kind of standard best practices based on his experiences
What I got
1] Operational risk is everything.
2] Basel II not explained. It seems to assume you already get it.
3] No system is presented. He argues it is all relative.
4] No best practices. Again it is all relative.
He does in fairness mention make a great deal of arguments for the need for operational risk. The problem is that anyone buying the book already understands there is a need. They are buying the book to get hints on what to do about it. I know it is all relative but as an expert he needs to take a stand and come up with some fairly universal best practices. Also he needs to realize that this is a young area and many banks are just creating their Op risk departments and need some kind of help in how to go about that. Not theory but concrete practical help.
To complicate matters his English is boorish and he uses bullets like they were going out of style. Not to sum up things like they are normally used but rather to break up run-on sentences. The sign of a well written book isn't snotty language or fancy math terms. The sign of a good book is that the readers learned something from it. I came away from this book no closer to knowing what to do about Op risk then before I bought it.
