Book Description

For the first time in print, here are early lectures and private lessons from celebrated spiritual teacher Ernest Holmes, illustrating the key concepts behind his influential ideas.

Ernest Holmes was a beloved teacher and philosopher with a disarmingly simple message: Change your thinking, and you will change your life. There is a creative law in the universe, Holmes reasoned, and it is available to each of us right now through our thought patterns. We can quite literally think our way to happiness and contentment.

The author of the landmark work The Science of Mind and the founder of the worldwide Religious Science movement, Holmes was a uniquely gifted scholar with a vast command of the world's spiritual philosophies. To read him is to experience the deft workings of one of the shrewdest spiritual minds of the past century-yet to marvel at the simplicity of his message.

Love and Law is a collection of carefully selected lectures and private lessons that have never before been in print. It is an easy-to-read and concise volume, welcoming in both message and appearance.

1 out of 5 stars "Everything Old is New Again".......2007-05-12

With the movie "The Secret" and The Law of Attraction, being so popular at the moment, even though this book was written in the early 1900's, it is still quite pertinent. Very helpful in teaching ways to manifest good in one's life.

5 out of 5 stars Answers to Celestine Prophecy.......2006-02-28

Ernest Holmes was truly a man inspired by God. He succintly and methodically informs, teaches and demonstrates his teachings. The Mind of God is truly our mind. Awareness is everything. Ernest Holmes has turned religion into methodical science and law. Love is law. A must read for inquisitive minds seeking more of God and a clearer spiritual walk.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Ernest Holmes' beliefs and wisdom!.......2004-07-13

This book is of immense value! It is not a religious book, but rather a philosophy and psychology and more of a positive thinking New Thought book. It has become my favourite Ernest Holmes book in my collection. If you don't have time to read Science Of Mind, which is a very thick book, then read this first for a concise version where he talks about the principles of Science of Mind in an informal way. Some chapters are taken from his lectures, and I think he expresses his ideas very well in this book. It covers beliefs, attitudes and wisdom that you may have never read from his other more formal books like Science Of Mind, "This Thing Called You" or "Creative Mind and Success".

There is a questions and answers part in each chapter where he answers questions. This is the part which I like the most. He talks about things which he never revealed in other books, more personal issues and how he overcame his own beliefs of poverty etc. Then each chapter ends with him affirming - I learn from this part how he actually takes up an affirmation, how he neutralizes all doubts and fears and opposing thought, and how he makes the affirmation undeniable and undoubtable.

The first time I read this book, I followed his method of affirming for my health, and I kept repeating it, and in 10 minutes I can see and feel improvement! I was filled with joy and energy. Then I took up a thought for someone and affirming goodness and happiness into her life, and she calls immediately after that in a joyful voice from another country! Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The most Important Book for the New Millennium!.......2001-02-16

This book is filled with the unpublished teachings of Dr. Ernest Holmes, author of the Science of Mind and Founder of the Religious Science movement. As you read this book you feel a sense of sitting in the classroom with Dr. Holmes. His inspiration, enthusiasm and dedication to Truth is infectious! This is a brilliantly edited masterpiece. This book truly illustrates why the Science of Mind is the Philosophy for the New Millennium. No one has given us the Truth of Being as clearly and easily understood as Dr. Holmes since Jesus. Thank you and bless you, Marilyn Leo!!!

5 out of 5 stars M.M.mmmmmmm................2002-06-27

I just received this book for my birthday, and it is now, in a library chock full of M.M. books, my favorite. This is the book I would have written if I could have. Not only does it have many pics that even this M.M. devotee hasn't seen, but is enhanced by a collection of quotes and observations about M.M., by co-workers, directors, and friends, all of them flattering, as it should be (DON'T you go messin' with our Goddess!!) Almost all the pics, aside from "out-takes" from costume fittings, are very casual and spur of the moment. I always find these un-posed pics the most fascinating, and, though they aren't necessarily always the most flattering, they are sometimes the most revealing, more Norma Jeane than Marilyn. I found the pictures of the 12 year old M.M., then truly Norma Jeane, feeding a deer, to be very touching and true to the person she really was. And there's a fascinating semi-nude, of the famously talked about but never before seen frame from "The Misfits", that M.M. wanted to keep in the final film, but censorship at that time wouldn't allow for it. Also, the impromptu pics of her on the beach with an anonymous and star-struck family, M.M. was known to be very approachable with those she attributed her stardom to, the fans,...these pics are welcome treasures. I have an original b & w snapshot of M.M., from the estate of friends of hers, and always wondered about the time period, etc... well, this book has turned out to be a good reference book, too, as I just found a picture of her in it wearing the same sweater and hairstyle, dated 1955, as in the photo I have...I love detective work!! Anyhow, I highly recommend this book for M.M. fans, aspiring or otherwise. I didn't think Mr. Haspiel, who was lucky enough to know M.M., wrote two other excellant books about her, and is a devoted keeper of the flame, had anything new to offer concerning M.M. But this book is definatley the most interesting and revealing to date, now, if he could just get Whitey Snyder, Marilyns make up man and devoted friend, to write his long awaited memoir of her, that would be great. But I suspect Mr. Snyder is one of the few who is still too loyal to the memory of The Goddess to divulge much, and I respect that, (not that we're looking for "dirt", we're not, we love her too.) A great addition to anyone interested in the most beautiful (inside and out) movie legend of all.

3 out of 5 stars The Personal Qualities of Norma Jeane.......2001-11-20

If you have ever enjoyed a movie in which Ms. Marilyn Monroe appeared, you will find this book rewarding.

Mr. Haspiel met Ms. Marilyn Monroe on the street one day in New York while he was 16. While most might have been tempted to ask for an autograph, or just stare, Mr. Haspiel asked her for a kiss. She obliged him, and he began to follow her around. Pretty soon, she was calling him "Jimmy" and they became friendly. Based on his sense of what she was like, Mr. Haspiel has published two earlier books (Marilyn, The Ultimate Look at the Legend and Young Marilyn) which develop his sense of what she was like and how people responded to her. This impact continues even after her death. For example, many people have arranged to have their final resting place be near hers, including Mr. Hugh Hefner and the author. ". . . I have devoted much of these past thirty-seven years in keeping Marilyn's true story free of the excesses set down by many of her biographers." In this book, he hopes to help you "to recall her with dignity and a genuine sense of kindness." I think he has succeeded in this respectful and interesting book.

Many people who knew Ms. Monroe described her as being much different in person than when in her glamour persona as a movie star. "Off screen, you would more likely encounter Norma Jeane." The book is filled with mostly unpublished photographs and quotes from people who knew her which make that point. Three quotes in particular captured that sense for me. Her first husband commented that he knew Norma Jeane, but never met Marilyn Monroe. Ms. Monroe was famous for making everyone wait for her to arrive and perform. Billy Wilder commented that this was because "she's scared and unsure of herself." Ella Fitzgerald tells a story about how Ms. Monroe got Ms. Fitzgerald an important booking by telling the owner that she, Ms. Monroe, would take a front table every night of the engagement. That's clearly the sort of thing that a friend does, not a movie star.

The photographs in this book capture that same sense. In the early images, the private person and the actress look pretty similar. Gradually, the two images diverge. The private one is natural and relaxed, and the public person is creating an atmosphere for the viewer. The cover image of this book (a candid shot on a New York City street) helps make this point. Even better for this purpose is a photograph of her walking without makeup in New York City around April 1955.

You also get a flavor of the way that her talent gave her advantages in performing. At the sort of distance that is used in a close-up for films, a remarkable presence appears in even the earliest images that you cannot see from further away. The earliest example of this is a close-up from a 16 mm. film around 1945.

The awkwardness of being this dual self is neatly captured in the occasion when she was introduced to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret in 1956. Ms. Monroe is behaving in a perfectly natural way, and wearing a horribly inappropriate dress.

Many of the images come from tests of costumes for the films she appeared in. I was astonished to see how much she emoted for the camera in these pedestrian pictures. Some of these images exceed publicity stills for the same films for emotion and power.

Mr. Haspiel's sincere devotion to her memory allow us to see a nice woman, rather than a screen goddess, and for that we should all be grateful.

After you enjoy this book, I suggest that you consider how much you create a social mask that is different from your true personality. Unless you work as an actor or actress, consider how different your life would be if you behaved the same with others as you do with yourself.

Trust others to accept and appreciate you as you are! Then, hold our your hand in friendship, and move forward together.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn, Marilyn..........2001-11-17

James Haspiel has made a truly beautiful book about Marilyn Monroe. The book is full of pictures and also quotes from/about Marilyn. This is a must for every Marilyn fan. The most interesting thing is that J. Haspiel was Marilyn's friend, and that's perhaps why this book is so fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF THE GODS!.......2004-08-10

Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities make up for one of the BEST Forgotten Realms accessories (they are in trilogy form) ever made. The Trilogy sheds light on exactly what the title says: Gods-and there sure is lots of them! The books, which are very well written and very well presented, also focus on other areas such as each church's distinct culture, tradition, and history. As a result, they will win you over for sure!

Eric Boyd does a FANTASTIC job of presenting the different pantheons, ranging from background history, to rank descriptions, to their respective magic, thus allowing for the creation of important people and characters, to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and treasures. This accessory has it all and more!
Each god has his own supplementary text information, clerics' and worshippers' alignments, Specialty Priest class and their alignments, church symbols, specific spells, special abilities, dress garb, even information relating to actual temples.

For other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, Dreams of Red Wizards on Thay, Dwarves Deep, Draconomicon, the Jungles of Chult and Moonsea accessories, the Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep adventures, the Ruins of Myth Drannor (Elven pantheon) and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Sets for Bane vs Cyric material (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For updated editions of events in the Realms, see the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans.

Moreover, for those interested in the gods, the Forgotten Realms novels to read are: The Avatar Trilogy- Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep, the Prince of Lies, and Crucible: the Trial of Cyric the Mad. In addition, the Ring of Winter is relevant to the Chultan pantheon and specifically to Ubtao, as it is the only novel set in the Jungles of Chult.

Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons, and Demihuman Deities along with the Forgotten Realms Adventures accessory, and the three Forgotten Realms Campaign Settings (one for each edition) are a "must!" They all compliment each other.
Whether you are playing in the Forgotten Realms or in the Planes, this trilogy of books will be of tremendous help in collecting all the information you'll ever need.

            4 out of 5 stars A good addition........2001-11-11

Useful for the culture of any demihumans your group may be encountering... I don;t find it ESSENTIAL, but it IS nice to look at every now and then....

            5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2000-08-09

This is the third book dealing with deities in the Forgotten Realms. This is the only book dealing with only demi-humans. If you are running a drow campaign or need information on drow gods it is here. There is also elves, halflings, gnomes, and dwarven gods presented. If there is any demi-humans in your campaign this is a must so that either the DM or PC can have a better understanding of the religions on the Realms as a whole. One problem is that is some instances they refer to the other two books (Faiths and Avatars, Powers and Pantheons) in the series. But neither is truly needed if you are running a demi-human only campaign.

5 out of 5 stars Finally-Demi-Humans can be more than Generic Clerics.......2000-03-29

This book is absolutely amazing in the depth of information that is available. All of the playable demi-human races from FR have their faiths described in detail, from history of the deity to the actual make up of their churches, etc. This book definately is of aid if you DM or play in a group where individuals love to play demi-humans because players do not have to be priests to enjoy some of the benefits. Also, it allows priests to more closely mirror the ideals of their dieties, namely with regards to specialty priests. It has made several players in my group who viewed playing a cleric as a "medic" appreciate playing clerics again. The volume of information that is available in this book is a tad bit overwhelming at times and a few of the specialty priests are too powerful in my opinion but overall this book is definately a must have if you are running a FR campaign. It will open players up to playing clerics more often, providing them with the means to have a rich background and meaningful interactions within their faith.

3 out of 5 stars Useful for the unwilling to draw on their creative energies.......2000-01-04

I don't know about you, but I can easily emulate nearly every aspect of this book with flying colors. Pantheons are probably the easiest task a DM has in his campaign - all he has to do is pick several belligerently-sounding combination of sounds, call upon his knowledge of any mythos, and, presto!, a pantheon. Giving powers to specialty priests is not the hard part - the hard part is putting the motives behind the gods, at which I can't say this book succeeds too well. Unless you have a hounding desire to perfectly comply to the letter of the Forgotten Realms materials avalable, I don't see this having much success among those who want to create rather than copy.

3 out of 5 stars A Few More Choices For The Demihumans.......2000-01-06

I have always liked the demihumans, as well as the Forgotten Realms Campaign. Although this book had quite a few new classes, there were few that I actually found useful. Yes, some of the Warrior and Rogue kits were pretty cool, some of these classes seem to be unable to use. Don't let this discourage you. You may find some interesting classes that would put the spin you want on your campaign.

4 out of 5 stars Humano-centricity: Good bye to bad rubbish.......1999-11-10

Finally a book for us freaks and geaks who like playing something other than a boring human. While yes most of book is geared toward the rouges(demihumans can only be Paladins in 3rd edition so, there's no surprise here that the warrior classes are a little weak) I did find one kit I really liked. Understand that I like playing Elven/Half-Elven Rangers and for some odd reason the Houndmaster kit spoke to me. I liked it so much it made buying the whole thing worthwhile. Some of it is a little vague however and that works to its disadvantage. But all in all a good book, most of us who play humans maybe when a gun is pressed into the back of our heads will find something in here to like.

              Book Description

This provocative book by a Japanese executive shows that the keys to business success in the West are the proven techniques of the Far East successful strategic planning and its conservative execution. Strategy in the classic military sense is deploying your forces to achieve a competitive advantage. Concentrating on the thought processes behind Japan's successful strategic thinking, this book describes what strategic thinking is and presents concepts and concrete examples for its application. Only by integrating the three C's in a strategic triangle Customer, Competitor, and Company can sustained competitive advantage exist. Business managers at all levels can benefit from this 'how to think about it' guide by developing profitable and creative strategies.

4 out of 5 stars Your Company, Your Customers, and Your Competition.......2007-08-23

In The Mind of the Strategist Kenichi Ohmae emphasizes that strategy doesn't come from a scientific (or even logical) approach to developing a plan to maximize profits. Instead, it comes from viewing your competitive world in new and unconventional ways. Another Ohmae based philosophy is what he calls the "Strategic Triangle." Here, he maintains that when developing your business strategy, you must take into account the three main players: your company itself, your customers and your competition - appreciating that each has its own unique set of interests and objectives.

He outlines four different approaches to developing winning strategies, but they all share the same underlying philosophy: avoid doing the same thing, on the same battlefield, as your competitors. Of the four approaches, I found that his concept of KFS (Key Factors for Success) was the one that intrigued me the most and the one I thought would be the most effective. I found it so relevant in fact that I reference it in my book The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit & GrowthThe Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit and Growth. It starts with the premise that certain functions within every business are more critical for success in that particular business environment than others. If you concentrate effort on these areas and your competitors do not, this is a potential source of competitive advantage. The key, of course, is to correctly identify what these key factors for success are.

Having dealt with Japanese business people, one of the first things that struck me as I read this book was the fact that Mr. Ohmae tended to be blunt and outspoken, a characteristic that is not common in the Japanese culture where the tendency is subtlety. His directness, however, has served him well in conveying meaningful business insights and strategies in this book. It is a staple in my reference library.

4 out of 5 stars Effective Strategic Thinking.......2007-02-09

This is an interesting book that posits the idea that effective business strategies emanate from the state of mind. Kenichi Ohmae explains the thought processes behind Japan's successful strategic thinking. The author methodically and in simple English discusses what strategic thinking entails and concepts behind it. He reinforces the message with practical examples for its application.

The book shows that it is only through the effective integrating the three C's in a strategic triangle namely the Customer, Competitor, and Company can sustained competitive advantage exist.

Although the book is now 25 years since publication, the ideas it teaches are still applicable and relevant. However, it may benefit from a revision since, at the time it was written, it was fashionable to try to discover the secrets of Japanese success, but the aura and magic of Japan is no longer as it used to be. Anyway, the book does not say much about Japanese Business. The revision could just be to remove "The Art of Japanese Business" from the title. However, the author's main message that successful business strategies do not result from rigorous analysis but from a particular state of mind is still as valid as it ever was.

For those looking for a more modern book on Strategic thinking, I recommend the book "Strategic Thinking: A Step-By-Step Approach to Strategy, Second Edition" by Simon Wooten and Terry Horne.

5 out of 5 stars The art of strategy and business.......2006-05-06

Ohmae;s signature work has always been on my list of things to read, but I never quite got around to it. Boy was I missing something. Ohmae's book is marketed as a look at japanease business, but it is really the Mind of a McKinsey strategist. I am not sure how Ohmae was able to publish this book, but it is a defacto methodology for formulating strategy and it exposes the key tools and frameworks used by McKinsey.

The book is extremely well written and conversational in tone making complex ideas seem straight forward -- not simple but certainly understandable.

The book covers all aspects of stragtegy from how you shape the problem, conduct the analysis and make decisions. This is a must read for all general managers particularly if your company is hiring outside consultants to do stratgegy.

Now one might think that a book written more than 20 years ago would be outdated and less relevant. This is definately not the case, by focusing on the process, tools and how you apply them Ohmae has written a timeless book that stands up well in the pre and post internet world.

So this is highly recommended, in fact most highly recommended.

              3 out of 5 stars good...not great.......2005-08-19

Parts one and three were the most insightful and intriguing. The stratgic planning process was well defined and provided a framework for how to 'think', rather than a guide to planning. Part three, which is about the infamous 3 C's, was too light on content. The high level overview of the 3 C's in this section left me with little information about how to effectively use the 3 C's. Lastly, many of the examples are very outdated. It would be helpful if Omhae updated it to reflect the recent history of the Japanese economy and its impact on their corporations.

4 out of 5 stars Does strategic thinking impact innovation ?.......2005-07-29

The way you think in the lab and the office really can directly impact innovation. Even though this book was written about business, I have learned how to reapply its lessons to innovation - specifically Kenichi helps to define and measure success and define the "deliverables" or "outputs" that innovation has to produce in order to become a reality. Kenichi has a clear description of the biggest factors (the 3 C's) impacting your success in business - the company, the competition, and the customer/consumer. If you look at innovation in this context, Kenichi is actually also helping us innovators define "what success looks like": the product/technology the company makes, how technically different or better it is than competitive benchmarks or alternatives in the marketplace, and whether conusmers like it and want it. On the projects I have worked on, advised others on, or simply observed the ones that make consistently hit at least all 3 of these deliverables and often additional deliverables to. Those that fall short of all 3 consistently fail. Hope this helps scientists, managers, entrepreneurs, and anyone with a creative or problem solving mind.
