Great Avtor, Great Writer...Who Knew?.......2007-01-25
Peter O'Toole's early years, growing up in Ireland, are a remarkable beginning for one of our grandest theatre artists. This story fascinating story is set against the back drop of the chaos of the 1930s, the rise of Hitler, and the lead up to World War II.
As enthralling as this story is, the writing in this book are every syllable as deliscious and enjoyable as the life in these stories. The biggest surprise is that the subject of these pages, Peter O'Toole, is also the author! As it turns out, Mr O'Toole is as superlative a writer as he is gifted on the stage and screen as an actor. Who knew?
The best news of all: this is volume one. Read it and then rush out and grab volume II, "Lotering With Intent: The Apprentice."
good.......2001-04-15
This is a wacked memoir. O'Toole basically writes two parallel biographies, one of his childhood AND ONE OF ADOLPH HITLER'S adult life!!! Has this ever been done before? So you get to read about what O'Toole did and what Hitler was doing about the same time. It's amusing, and interesting. I did have trouble with some English slang. A weird book, I think. But I liked it. Peter O'Toole is my favorite actor. But I still think you'd enjoy it if you're not a big fan.
The classic and the modern........2000-04-27
A charming book; somehow surprising, as the critics say too:'a new face of O'TOOLE': indeed, the tone of the story is a very warm one, with romantic overtones in the first part, without any trace of cynism or sophistication; therfore, it is contrary to his style maybe, or, a better word is to his type of characters he plays as an actor-usually being in a delicate psychological or emotional status. PETER is creating his book like a sort of collage of memories, keeping coherently the time which gives it a sense, a direction, yet somehow not enough as he needs a second link: Hitler's image(...). In the second part, still, a change of tone: more aggressive when it is about the war; a genuine atmosphere of the 40s, now in flashbacks in the 90s.Classic and modern at the same time as approaching, quite poetic.
Genuine atmosphere of the late 40s........2000-01-25
THE images PETER O'TOOLE creates in our mind reading the book are curiously picturesque; they are quite alike with the air of the Italian neorealism in CINEMA, as we can make a connection with it. A tone quie calm, epic, for the memories of his childhood, yet which becomes a bit agressive when he recalls that Adolf Hitler existed. A puzzle of thoughts narrative and expressionist at the same time, and surprisingly modern.
Fascinating autobiographical account of O'Toole's childhood........1998-10-05
If you are remotely interested in Peter O'Toole, this is a great account of his childhood (most interestingly the three major influences in his life including Hitler) and how he first broke into acting (his jokes regarding Bernard Shaw are hilarious). There are some interesting annecdotes regarding the filming of `Rogue Male', his first film.
His narrative style can a times be a bit disjointed, but the overall picture is wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Immensely enjoyable, if truncated, autobiography.......2003-10-14
You should know going in to Peter O'Toole's "Loitering with Intent" that it is intended less as a full autobiography (it ends with his teenage years shortly after the end of WWII) and more as an impressionistic canvas of growing up in Europe during 20th century wartime. Bearing this in mind, you will find this both immensely enjoyable and hauntingly well-written.
O'Toole's recollections of his parents--a gorgeous, flirtatious mother and a handsome, ne'er-do-well father--are rich with detail and emotion. He remembers also their friends, their tribulations (and pet mouse!) during WWII, and perhaps most vividly of all, his enforced sojourn in the English countryside when city life was deemed too dangerous for children. His account of going to church and going to a Protestant school (O'Toole was reared a good Irish Catholic boy) are especially hilarious, from the fights with bullies to the strict teachers to the sad family with whom he lodged. One especially funny tale has to do with a school picnic. When the Protestant teacher instructs the class to pray for good weather for the picnic, they all promise to. Of course picnic day arrives and is rainy. The teacher disapprovingly sniffs, "Well, I see God didn't answer our prayers." O'Toole, eight years old and astounded by this non-Catholic outlook, cries out, "Yes, He did! He said no!"
Young O'Toole is obsessed with Adolf Hitler, who makes an appearance every several dozen pages. O'Toole gets at the maniacal dictator's fascination for a young, feverishly imaginative boy with some extraordinary stream-of-consciousness writing:
"Hitler had been poison-gassed [in WWI]. Daring despatch runner that he was, twice he was got. Shrapnel swept a bit of his shin away. After two years of carnage, fighting trench warfare at the front, he was got. Into beetroot fields. stream bottoms, slag heaps, pitheads, broken smoking juts of towns and villages, burning vanished woodlands, into downs and rides and hillsides, the trenches had been dug deep down into the mud and earth . . . hydra-headed, destroyed, constantly relocated, these barbarous earthworks moved and split the countrysides of France and Belgium. Six million soldiers hopped off sandbag parapets and were killed. Many miles of no man's lands ran between the Allied and the German trenchlines, they, too, dying and being reborn in other fields. Barbed-wire gardens to crouch in and be killed."
If only the book explored more of O'Toole's life as a world-renowned actor . . . but it doesn't. It stops shortly after the war and we must all hope that he soon writes a follow-up volume. Had he not been an actor, Peter O'Toole could have made a splendid career as a writer. Thoroughly enjoyable!
disjointed.......2003-03-14
A disjoint account of a small part of the life of a talented man who has lived a very full life.

Book Description
Casino Gambling can increase your chances of winning and decrease your chances of losing in your next casino session.
Chapters 9 - 14, a lesson on dice control, shows you how to create your own advantage over the casino by minimizing the chances of throwing the losing seven and how to throw the long hand and score on your point numbers. The winning craps system is in Chapter 12 -- dice set, grip, focus and throw -- in words and pictures. Read it and use the winning craps system to create own edge over the casino.
Chapters 3 - 8, reveal the clues and a winning gambling system for finding winning blackjack tables. Sit down at one of these tables with an excellent chance of winning.
Chapters 15 - 17 define exactly what a roulette dealer signature is and describe the three types of dealer signatures (predictable patterns).
Chapter 17 presents a winning gambling system to enable you to detect and exploit a dealer signature and Get an Edge at roulette.
Chapter 2 details the eight decisions you make in every casino gambling session; learn how to make them the right way to maximize your chances of winning and minimize your chances of losing in each of your casino gambling sessions.
Chapters 4, 5 and 6 explain why card counting in blackjack doesn't always work the way it's supposed to and disclose how to avoid losing on the high count hands; i.e., when to bet up and when not to bet up on the high-count hands.
Chapter 18 contains an interesting story about The Streak and describes a betting strategy to exploit player/dealer patterns in the game of baccarat.
If you gamble on the Internet, don't make that next click until you read Chapter 21 to learn how to avoid the pitfalls and exploit the winning possibilities.
Before your next trip or any trip to the casinos, be sure to review the 16 axioms of successful casino gambling described in Chapter 2.
If you're planning a trip to Vegas or any other casino gambling destination and want some quick and easy-to-follow advice to give you a good shot at coming home a winner: Read Chapter 7 for blackjack advice, Chapter 13 for craps advice, Chapter 17 for roulette advice, Chapter 18 for baccarat advice or Chapter 19 for advice on the popular variations of casino poker.

Average book.......2006-11-07
This is a great just basic book I wouldnt say it goes into any great detail just give you the basic understanding of the games and where your odds a probably better at making money. But in reality the house always has the advantage your almost better off going the first minute you get to vegas take all your money right to the roulette table and go black or red if you win take the cash and enjoy the rest of your trip not gambling!
Amazon is confused.......2005-01-30
I looked at this listing and found that the description was for the "paperback" version. Well this book, "Casino Gambling: Winning Techniques for Craps, Roulette, Baccarat and Blackjack" (C)1982-3 is said to contain chapters with silliness like how to control dice and spot a roulette wheel. That description is NOT for this book! It is for a book called "Casino Gambling : A Winner's Guide to Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat, and Casino Poker" (C)2000. The newer book lists several authors. The added sections must be from the new authors and account for the lame "beat the system" advice. The 1983 book is very solid with excellent math and logic only! It tells you up front that you can't get an edge on a casino but shows you exactly what the house edge is on every single bet. This makes you an informed consumer at a casino. Such a book is refreshing in a sea of books about gaming that purport to give you a "secret" to gain riches. HA! The best you can do in a casino is either get up early and stop, (but you could also get down early) or play smart and loose small amounts slowly while enjoying the game and maybe some free drinks. If you want to learn to play casino games and want the straight info about the risks of each play, this book is perfect. If you want to hear a fairytale about how to "beat the house" look any ware else. PS this book IS paperback as well. ISBN: 039950656X
Should be listed in humor category.......2004-08-25
This book is great, it's very funny and will provide many laughs. Unfortunately, if you are looking to read a book on how to gamble well, this is not it.
This book states how to beat Craps (controlled rolling of the dice to land on certain numbers), Blackjack (taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding groups of high and low cards), and Roulette (watching for a zone on the wheel where the ball repeatedly falls due to the dealer throwing the ball with the same speed).
These methods of how to beat the casino are all completely irrational, unattainable, and at times just plain ridiculous.
If you could beat craps by controlled throwing of the dice, don't you think the casinos would recognize this and change their dice rolling procedures. To avoid having controlled rolls is the exact reason is why they make you hit the back wall in the first place.
If you could beat roullette by taking advantage of dealer memory, where they always throw the ball with the same speed and therefore produces certain zones on the wheel that are hit consistently, don't you think the casino would recognize that certain numbers hit more frequently and change their procedures. The obvious fact that the Author fails to mention is that in order for this method to work, the dealer would always have to throw the ball with the exact same speed and he/she would always have to release it at the exact same spot on the wheel...which is nearly impossible or at least so low a percentage, that I would not bet on it!
The Blackjack stategy is the only one that even resembles rational thought, but even this method of taking advantage of non-random shuffling and finding pockets of either high or low cards and then increasing or decreasing your bet accordingly fails to mention one obvious fact. Even if you do see pockets of high or low cards, you never know how big the pocket is...you could see two hands of all high cards, change your bet accordingly, then the next hand could change to a pocket of low cards.
In summary, this book tells you how the Author consistently beats the casino using these methods...I think the Author needs to realize that he is just getting lucky using his less than scientific systems. If you want to read a book on how to gamble well you should pick one that explains how to minimize your losses, by decreasing the house edge. At least find one that is non-fiction!
Good Book!.......2004-08-19
This book helped me incredibly understand the odds and help beat the casino at their games. I recommend it.
An excellent handbook.......2004-02-01
I found this a delightful book. It's very easy to read, covers all the major games, and contains lots of practical, useful advice.
And at less than $20, it's excellent value for money.
My only criticism (a very minor one) is that the Roulette section focuses mainly the "double-zero" wheel, used in the USA. The "single zero" wheel used in Europe and in Australia, doesn't get much coverage.
However, this is a minor issue. Overall I found this an excellent book, containing a wealth of useful advice.

Customer Reviews:
Poker is Life. .......2005-07-13
I grant that this book does not look like much, but inside are concise pages packed with common sense and advice on how to become a better poker player; which is precisely what many readers need. In keeping with the trends of our day, the type of poker that the majority of this book discusses is Texas Hold 'Em as it the game most often played in casinos. Silberstang is obviously a serious gambler who asserts at the beginning that we play the game for one reason alone: to make money. I read another commentator who disparaged him for this implication, but I agree with Silberstang. Yes, it's fun and it feels good to learn something new and excel at it, but, ultimately, bringing the chips to the spot in front of you is the ultimate high. I like the voice of this narrator. He's hardened and tough; exactly what we expect and respect about the game. There's no "grand strategy" here. It's the basics, but it certainly helped me. I paid less than six bucks for it, which makes The Winner's Guide the best value on Amazon.
Good start, but limited strategy.......2004-07-26
Gamblers who are unsure of all the rules of a casino game or want to understand the basic concepts of when to hold'em and when to fold'em will find the information in this text to be useful. However, once the simplistic directions in this book are mastered, you will have to move up to more thorough and specific books aimed at one particular game.
By trying to cover all casino games, only cursory attention is given to mastering any of them. Therefore, with this book under your arm, you will be able to confidently walk into a casino and know that you are above-average at any table, but an expert at none.
A good introduction.......2002-04-26
For a beginner, this book is a good starting point to casino poker. Most of the in-depth material is on Hold'em and 7 card stud, but the book does skim over some lesser-played games too. If you're curious about getting into the game, the price is right.
fore see.......2002-03-18
ed it's me tyler my love how you been sorry for the disappointments your book is a star sweet bee
Excellent book for those wishing to hit the casino.......2001-05-07
This is an excellent book. It contains a great deal of information about what to expect when you enter a casino, the games to play and those to avoid, ettiquette etc. In addition to all this casino-based information it also has a wealth of knowledge on the games themseleves (hold-em, 7 card-stud, Hi-Lo variations, omaha and more) and at this price it is an absolute bargain. Perhaps the only area in which the book needs improvement is its information on tells and psychology.
Book Description
a collection of the best thinking from one of the most innovative management consulting firms in the world.
For the past thirty-five years, The Boston Consulting Group has been shaping the way business is done the world over, and now, Perspectives on Strategy offers a unique opportunity to acquaint readers with a broad selection of the firm's contributions. A compilation of seventy-five of BCG's most influential articles and thought pieces, this book is an indispensable source of fresh ideas, insights, and practical lessons for managers, executives, and entrepreneurs in every industry. Here is a sampling of what's inside:
* "[Business] competition is a battle royal in which there are many contenders, each of whom must be dealt with individually. Victory, if achieved, is more often won in the mind of a competitor than in the economic arena."
* "The majority of products in most companies are cash traps. . . . [They] are not only worthless, but a perpetual drain on corporate resources."
* "Use more debt than your competition or get out of the business."
* "Displacement of high-cost competitors by lower prices benefits the customer."
* "As a strategic weapon, time is the equivalent of money, productivity, quality, even innovation."
* "When brands become business systems, brand management becomes far too important to leave to the marketing department."
* "The winning organization of the future will look more like a collection of jazz ensembles than a symphony orchestra."
* "Most of our organizations today derive from a model whose original purpose was to control creativity."
* "Dumping should be encouraged. It is a gift from the nation that provides the products."
* "Taxes should be levied when, and only when, individuals disinvest in order to consume. Capital still at work should not be taxed at all."
The Boston Consulting Group is an innovator in business strategy worldwide. In fact, BCG and its founder, Bruce D. Henderson, may be best known internationally as the creators and architects of the discipline of business strategy. Innovative business concepts originating at the firm include "cash cow," "experience curve," "segment-of-one(r) marketing," "time-based competition," and "capabilities-based competition." Now, for the first time, BCG's most influential writings are gathered in a comprehen-sive collection, offering serious-minded readers access to BCG's thinking on the theory, development, and practice of business strategy.
One way BCG shares its insights on strategy is through a series of publications known as Perspectives. Perspectives offer sharply focused views and recommendations on strategic business topics. Distributed to executives worldwide, Perspectives are typically no more than 1,200 words in length.
This book brings together many of the most influential Perspectives, as well as several acclaimed articles published in the Harvard Business Review. Both timely and timeless, the seventy-five pieces included here are among the most innovative, controversial, and stimulating to have appeared over the past three decades.
An anthology of the most provocative thinking from one of the world's most esteemed management consulting firms, Perspectives on Strategy is essential reading for senior managers, executives, entrepreneurs, and students of strategy and business.

Good collection of concepts in Strategy.......2003-03-06
When I buy this book I expect to learn more about strategy, business and enterprises, and I must say I get it.
There is a good description of some difficult concepts, and I fine approach to competetive entreprises rules. It is not the definitive book about it, but there is no definitive book for this.
It is rigth that this is not a new book, and some of the articles are old ones (from 1960's and 70's) but If you are not an expert and you look for a complete review, you get your money back.
And for last, I must confess that I like the content.
Good Brain-Twister - BCG should reveal mathematical concepts.......2001-10-11
This book is excellent - if you understand the mathematical logic behind the BCG-Approach. Most BCG-Theories are based on the formual:
Strategy = Microeconomics + System Dynamics Models
Therefore you should be able to understand differential equations.
Example: The 'experience curve' does not project a decline in 'accounting costs' but in microeconomic costs, that means inflation adjusted marginal cash flows.
If you translate the experience curve effect into a mathematical formula, the result is a first order differential equation . or stated in other terms - a systems dynamics model for a dynamic 'Cournot-Nash-Equlibruum', not the comparative-static Cournot-Nash-Equilibruum, that most textbooks on microeconomics teach..
The Logic behind the BCG approach is brilliant, but unfortunately they do not reveal their mahematical formulas and therefore many people misunderstand their approach.
I managed to discover their mathematical formulas - and I know what I'm saying, if i tell you, that it takes you a dozen pages full of mathematical terms of the highest order to understand the economic logic behind a 'simple' concept like the experience curve.
They can improve the book, if they reveal the mathematical lgic behind their approaches.

Hello,
This is a great collection of short articles from one of the most influential business consulting companies of all times.
So, if you can put up with or filter out some of the bizarre and apparently politically motivated comments then what you get is a fascinating history of the development of strategic thought in quite a number of key business areas.
Naturally, this is not a "how to" or a "biz strategy for dummies" book, but it does well in explaining some key concepts and of generating a desire to know more, that is, if you don't already know it all.
Regards,
martyn_jones@iniciativas.com
An compilation of mostly outdated papers.......2000-08-07
This was a disappointing bought. I was looking for alive ideas and what I found out was a collection of outdated papers mainly on experience curve. Most of them are simply a homage to Bruce henderson, with almost no value today. Even the most recent papers are not specially insightfull. The two stars come from some usefull ideas picked up from somes papers as the redefinition of a what a company offers as a guide for improving your strategy or the pitfalls of the reductionist thinking. It is not enough for recommending this book.
