This would have been a very interesting book but there are simply too many factual and typographical errors to recommend it. As far as I'm concerned, the book's only redeeming value is in the cross-listings given in each entry, which allow basic navigation through this genre for those who are new to it.

Did Thomas Weisser actually watch any of these movies before writing about them? I find that hard to believe as I've managed to track down a lot of these films, only to find them completely different than his reviews. Weisser's never had much credibility - this just continues to add to his legend.
From The Author Of Asian Cult Cinema - An Outrage.......1999-08-30
I really wonder about this author. He professes to love the Asian cinema so much yet what he writes about Asian men and women tend to be degrading. Regarding women, the author obsesses on appearance rather than acting ability. As for men, he has a tendency to lump them into a faceless, violent, crazed mass. I'm not really sure if this author means it or not, but his books have the feeling of borderline racism or voyeurism disguised as movie reference books. The subject of Asian cinema deserves much better than this and Asian people should be outraged.
Good reference, some gaps.......1999-06-28
Here is a shining little star in the otherwise empty universe of the Japanese Cinema reference books. Why a "little" star? And who is the reader? For serious buffs ("otakus" of Japanese movies) it contains not enough infos, and has too many gaps (where, for example, is "Kujakuoh"?) On the other hand, in case of beginners of the genre, it is almost sealed by the red tape. Personally, I enjoyed it, but what about the others?

Most scholars since World War Two have assumed that composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) maintained a strong attachment to Judaism throughout his lifetime. As these commentators have rightly noted, Mendelssohn was born Jewish and did not convert to Protestantism until age seven, his grandfather was the famous Jewish reformer and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, and his music was banned by the Nazis, who clearly viewed him as a Jew. Such facts tell only part of the story, however. Through a mix of cultural analysis, biographical study, and a close examination of the libretto drafts of Mendelssohn's sacred works, The Price of Assimilation provides dramatic new answers to the so-called "Mendelssohn Jewish question." Sposato demonstrates how Mendelssohn's father, Abraham, worked to distance the family from its Jewish past, and how Mendelssohn's reputation as a composer of Christian sacred music was threatened by the reverence with which German Jews viewed his family name. In order to prove the sincerity of his Christian faith to both his father and his audiences, Mendelssohn aligned his early sacred works with a nineteenth-century anti-Semitic musical tradition, and did so more fervently than even his Christian collaborators required. With the death of Mendelssohn's father and the near simultaneous establishment of the composer's career in Leipzig in 1835, however, Mendelssohn's fear of his background began to dissipate, and he began to explore ways in which he could prove the sincerity of his faith without having to publicly disparage his Jewish heritage.

Great German Romantics.......1997-04-01
Mention the word "romantic" to an organist and their mind instantly turns to France and composers like Widor and Franck. It's really a pity that German romantics get shortchanged in the modern repertoire.
Dover's rugged edition presents all of Brahms' works for organ, Mendelssohn's six Sonatas and three Preludes and Fugues, and Schumann's six Fugues on B-A-C-H. These pieces are readily playable on almost any instrument and are enjoyable to play. This book will make a great addition to any organist's library.

What's behind your sensation.......2000-05-04
The book is easy to follow, even for a reader like me, that is, one with little or no background in formal musical education. (I knew nothing about the sonata form, except for the name itself. But now, while listening to the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, I can tell when the exposition part ends and the development part starts and so on.) The author meticulously demonstrates how Mendelssohn tried and succeeded in synthesizing form and content, that is, the traditional sonata form and extra-musical contents such as landscape, poetry and drama to which the composer strove to give musical expressions. I'd like to recommend this book to anybody who wants to know what's behind his or her sensation.

Classical music has its fashion cycles as does every human endeavor. One is the periodic rediscovery and subsequent submersion of composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). This sadly underrated composer is often denigrated for what some consider to be his tendency to write quasi-kitschy music without a firm stylistic basis. To make things worse, popular wisdom maintains that he did all of his best work as a teenager and then burned out. Elijah, first performed shortly before the composer's death, proves wrong the "burnout" theory, for it is a masterpiece that was composed at the very end of Mendelssohn's brief life. The work combines classical discipline and romantic sweep in a dramatic format that owes at least as much to opera as to previous oratorios. It gives us splendid choruses in the style of Bach and Handel and memorable arias, as well as a dandy leading role for the bass who sings the prophet.
Elijah's arrival led later composers to try to copy Mendelssohn's success with Biblical oratorios of their own, but their attempts stand out mostly as examples of the simpering excesses of Victorian slush. The saccharine efforts lacked the skill, power, and conviction of Elijah, and now languish in well-deserved obscurity. But Elijah holds the listener's ear with its music and its meaning.
Elijah tells the story of the stern prophet who called the misbehaving people of Israel to repentance, and who clung to his resolve through a world of troubles until he was carried by a whirlwind into heaven as a reward. The subject enabled Mendelssohn to write a work that combined his ancestral Judaism with his own Lutheranism and to attempt to build a bridge from the Old Covenant to the New. You can explore how Mendelssohn achieved his inspiring goal in this complete orchestral score from Dover. The usual caveats for Dover's reprints of out-of-copyright editions prevail: the scores are not the most up-to-date, they usually lack English translations, and, because they're full scores, you will not be able to plunk them down on the music stand in front of the average organist and expect her to play it with any ease. That said, the scores are a tremendous bargain for anyone--students, professional musicians, amateur music lovers--with the urge to study a complete score of a fascinating work.

A quality score at a bargain price.......1999-08-18
This score is identical in every way to the Kalmus edition, which is considerably more expensive. The only caveat for conductors or students is that the Soprano and Alto staves use a C-clef and the Tenor staff uses a C4 clef. So does the Kalmus edition! Bass line and instrument clefs are normal. This is the one to purchase. A beatiful, easy-to-read score.

Paper-Pieced Curves Made Easy.......2000-06-01
This is a great book and a wonderful new concept I have been wanting to try. There are eight projects offered, rated in difficulty, and surprisingly easy to follow if you understand the fundamentals of paper piecing. Jodie's cutting charts are very helpful. With the cutting dimensions and number of pieces needed given for each project, preparing to begin sewing is a breeze. And the results are delightful as I tried one of the easiest rated patterns and then moved onto one of the most difficult - difficult only because of inset seams. Since the book is project oriented, Jodie also covers several bindings including prairie points.
Do not be put off by Jodie's 3 very brief paragraphs on paper piecing curved seams. I found them difficult to comprehend and the adjacent pictures were of no help at all. After a third reading and some thought, however, I just jumped in and figured out the missing details as I went along. It was easy, as Jodie promised, and got easier as I got into the individual blocks.

Definitely Worth Reading.......2007-03-24
My organization is in the process of a major change and reorganization. I found this book to be right on target in identifying the challenges and hurdles that we faced as well as providing some effective solutions to ensure that we do not make the same mistakes that others before us have made. I believe this is an excellent book and a must read for anyone within the organization, not just CEOs.
good for frogs.......2006-07-11
Feldman and Spratt advise lots of CEOs of large corporations as part of their work for PricewaterhouseCoopers (a mergerized mouthful if there ever was one), and those consulting habits show. The book is anecdotal and clever without being practical or useful, even if you're actually contemplating a merger. You will, however, learn the riddle of the five frogs on a log, which in the interest of saving time, we offer here: Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left? Five. Because there's a difference between deciding and doing. "Execution," the authors tell us, "is always more difficult than it seems."
Here's the lesson: Smart advice is timeless. If you do want a quick take on making effective decisions, then consider the very short chapter "The Effective Decision" in Peter Drucker's Managing the Non-profit Corporation (HarperCollins, 1990). Drucker writes sharply about the evils of reaching consensus too quickly, the dangers of not doing your homework, and the fact that decision making always involves risk taking. He also observes that "far too many decisions remain pious intentions." Even more memorable than the frog story.

This book is an excellent view of the M&A process from a very different angle. Many books cover the mechanics of the process, but this one looks at the outcomes for human beings - our most important assets. I would recommend it highly.

Having been on the receiving end of several poorly-executed acquisitions, I much appreciated the authors' vivid descriptions of merger complexity - and their straightforward advice on how to avoid it. Definitely worth reading.
The best of them all.......2002-04-29
My company has been making acquisitions for over twenty years and I think we've read all the merger books in print. "Five Frogs" is the winner when it comes to candid, practical and intuitive advice on how to accelerate through the post-deal transition without destroying shareholder value. Its a fast and easy read that makes its points clearly and with great examples that force you to think intelligently about decisions that must be made and executed quickly. The two chapters on internal and external communications planning and execution alone are worth the price. Our results from following the authors'advice on post-deal priority setting were both powerful and surprisingly painless. We're about to go through the biggest merger in our history and every member of every transition team in both companies now has a copy of "Five Frogs." It's become our merger bible. Also, if you get a chance to hear Feldman speak on the subject, don't miss it. He's an articulate and entertaining speaker who's seen it all. Very motivating.
