This book explores Shakespeare films as interpretations of Shakespeare's plays as well as interpreting the place of Shakespeare on screen, within the classroom, and within the English curriculum. Shakespeare on screen is evaluated both in relation to the play texts and in relation to the realms of popular film culture. The book focuses on how Shakespeare is manipulated in film and television through the representation of violence, gender, sexuality, race, and nationalism. DeborahCartmell discusses a wide range of films, including Orson Welles' Othello (1952), Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books (1991), Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1996) and John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998).

A very thin book.......2001-06-15

While very clearly written, this book disappoints both in the brevity with which it treats its subject and in the simplistic arguments it makes. The author is upset that filmmakers have not listened to academic (politically correct) critics. Branagh is bashed for being sexist, racist, you name it. Cartmell's book could be pedagogically useful, however, in creating discussion and debate among high school and college students.

Teaching us how to queer cultural artifacts..........2001-11-27

Doty's volume is very popular. Here he analyzes various forms of mass culture, from the Jack Benny radio program to the TV program "Laverne and Shirley" to demonstrate the existence of queer (non-heterosexually coded performance) narratives at the center of all of these cultural productions.

For example, Doty argues that in popular TV shows such as "Alice," "I Love Lucy", "Laverne and Shirley", the show depends on narrating from the perpective of the women in the show. Doty argues that the plot complications almost always stem from some male interference with the pleasure of the narrator, from unwanted suitors to demanding male bosses. Because heterosocial interaction is coded from narrator's perspective as intrusive, Doty labels these plot narratives "lesbian." Thus a queer reading of these shows reveals homosocial, if not homosexual, relationships as the important character and plot elements that are defended.

Then again, it is heterocentrism that defines queer as "homosexual behavior" in the first place, so why should queer studies accept that definition, when its intention is to undermine hetercentrism in the first place!

Jack Benny on the other hand, displays a central character whose behaviors are semiotically coded "feminine." He frets, bites his lip, has a lack of aggressive sexual desire for women, a loose, bouncy walk, and a high-pitched nervous giggle, to mention but a few things. The narrative display a central tendency to displace Benny from situations of power and influence--not the least of which was Benny's self-deprecating humor. Doty reminds us that Benny's biographies are full of his contemporaries remarking on his feminine characteristics. In this case, a queer reading is produced by taking an ostensibly "straight" man and imbuing him thoroughly with clearly "female" characteristics, all of which adds up to a queer character, never fitting in with compulsory heterosexual and masculine traits.

These are just two examples of how queer readings are produced in Doty's work. All in all, he aims to show that it is queerness, not straightness, that lies at the center of mass cultural production. Thus he argues for the overturning of heterocentricity as the dominant way of reading culture. A tall claim, no doubt, but one that is tantalizing nonetheless.

"Film interpretation is a form of film appreciation, in the first instance, and then a guide to others about the ways in which they too can come to appreciate the value (and, in some cases, the disvalue) of the films in question." So writes Noel Carroll in the "Introduction" of his Interpreting the Moving Image, a collection of his writings on film covering almost 20 years (1973-1990). With the conception of film interpretation above in mind, the book presents the reader with a rich panoply of insights into many films of various styles and genres through the eyes of Professor Carroll. The structure of the book is a bit unusual but interesting. Rather than laying out the essays in the order in which they were written, the essays here are ordered chronologically according to the films they address. So the book begins with essays on "Caligari," Chaplin, and Keaton, and ends with "Film in the Age of Postmodernism." The styles and genres of film addressed by the essays range from King Kong to Citizen Kane to the avant-garde.

Carroll's cognitive approach to film interpretation is refreshing in a field of study dominated semiotics and psychoanalytic theory. Especially worthwhile are his intensely close readings of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin films. In a reading of Chaplin's The Gold Rush, he argues that Chaplin's cinematic and directorial style was much more sophisticated and thoughtful than usually believed--especially in regard to how Chaplin's directorial techniques communicate or reinforce the theme of "alienation and loss of community engendered in the transition to modern mass society." The two essays on Buster Keaton, "Keaton: Film Acting as Action" and "Buster Keaton, The General, and Visible Intelligibility," explore the root of Keaton's humor in "the mechanics of work and of ordinary life, and of the bodily intelligence they require."

Other especially notable essays include a pair on the work of Orson Welles. "Interpreting Citizen Kane" expertly and handily reconciles two traditional but opposing interpretations of Welles' masterpiece. And in "Welles and Kafka" Carroll illustrates how Welles, in his film version of Kafka's The Trial, visually interprets Kafka's themes of confusion and geographic disorientation.

This little book is chock full of more interesting info than a full sized book on ANY celebrity. Lucy fans will find it fascinating, riveting, informative and fun to read. Chock full of interesting trivia. I highly reccomend this book about Lucille Ball (and her varioous television incarnations), the greatest and most popular entertainer in the history of television.

Not enough information.......2002-10-24

While I don't own this book, I would never buy it online with the way you presented it. To buy a music book, you need not only to see an index of the songs included, but also a few pages out of the book (even if not from the same page if you don't want to provide too much free content)... The reason for this is music can be too easy and too difficult to play. The worst feeling in the world is getting a book you ordered online only to find it is too boring to play because the music is too easy, or too difficult to play so it just stands on the bookshelf waiting for a more proficient player. Please provide us with more, this is true of all your sheet music.

A Good Collection of Classic Rock Songs.......2001-04-08

There is no way to represent everyone's idea of what "The Best" classic rock sheetmusic collection should be. However, "The Best in Classic Rock Sheetmusic" does a pretty good job...Some major classics are there; Hotel California, Stairway to Heaven, Light my Fire and some older classics such as Bad Moon Rising, Heart of Gold and Joy to the World. The size of the book works better for laying it out without it flipping back closed when you're playing. The smaller paperback books are harder to use. Overall, the scores are easy to read, lyrics are correct and the skill level ranges from easy-Night Moves, Old time Rock n Roll, to more challenging works-Aqualung, What a fool believes... The quality of what's in the book is great but, having only 25 songs, it left me wanting more to choose from (worth the $12 price though).

He essentially espouses a progression system and has constantly and consistently slammed knowledgeable and respected gambling professionals in many realms. If you want to get better at video poker, this book isn't the book for you. But if you want to feel better about yourself playing video poker, all the while losing your shirt, by all means, this is the book for you.

Rob Singer's book, is all you need, to start winning at video poker. He does slam the math folks, but they deserve to be slammed, for leading so many people a stray for so long. Anyone that criticises his techniques, obviously have never tried them.
I have won consistently since switching to his methods. He offers free advice/methods at his wonderful web-site and answers all his e-mail questions in a very friendly/timely manner.
Very simple advice : If you don't believe his way works, keep doing it your way. (You know what that means).

The Undeniable truth is that Singer doesn't have a clue.......2006-02-18

If somebody told you that 2+2=5 would you believe it? Singer argues against proven mathematical facts and encourages extremely dangerous gambling habits. He obviously has a vendetta against certain people and as a result made up a bunch of stuff for the book. I wouldn't trust Singer any further than I can throw him.

Good Info, but too much filler........2005-08-09

This book has some good ideas, philosophies and strategies at it's core. Unfortunately, that core only makes for about 20% of the content of this book. The other 80% is fluff and filler. It reads like an info-commercial and at times you wonder if the author is a professional gambler or motivational speaker.

Don't get me wrong, the core of this book is fantastic. The reason I bought this book was because I came to some of the same conclusions as the author. I was browsing this book at a bookstore and was amazed that I had come to the same revelations, but here they were in print! It was like finding a kindred spirit.

Alas, these revelations and strategies can be summed up in a book about 1/5 this size. There is only one chapter of real information and value here. Thus, the 2 star rating.
