This guide offers a wide range of unique information on over 500 film festivals around the world. Excellent for anyone involved in the film industry at any level. Attorney John Sloss writes its foreword. He is according to the Hollywood Reporter " the quintessential indie lawyer [whose] projects are quality all the way". The guide also has feature articles which include the making of "Cuba 15" an award-winning short film by its creator Elizabeth Schub, the benefits of travelling festivals and first hand coverage of different festivals throughout the world. It also includes a listing of producers and distributors, and film schools. Produced in association with the Kodak Emerging Filmaker Program.
There is a brief description of each film festival, with festival dates, addresses, number of attendees, type of film accepted, languages and country restrictions, entry fees, email and website information, contact person and awards. Each entry is separately indexed alphabetically, by month, genre, country and submission date to make searching as easy and quick as possible.

Frustrating.......2003-06-16
With online listings readily available, the listings in this and other film festival books are not particularly relevant. This one in particular, since it is three years old.
The value of these books, then, is the commentary. IFFG has some good stuff, specifically the first-hand accounts, by filmmakers, of their experiences at many different festivals (though sadly they too often consist of reviews of the movies that played at these festivals, which is especially irrelevant four years after the fact). Overall, it is a useful tool for filmmakers trying to decide which festival to attend, though I would say it is inferior to the Gore book in this regard, and quite dated.
Unfortunately, it is marred by absolutely the worst editing I've ever seen. Every page has numerous typographic and grammatical errors, something that is especially ridiculous considering that this is a 3rd edition. The mistakes are consistent across the many different authors who contributed to the book, so these are errors of commission, not omission.
My favorite is the use of an enye (n with a tilde over it) for the word "in", which is particularly incomprehensible in a book with no spanish language content. My current theory is that the text was handwritten, then OCR'd into the computer and rushed to print.
I can't recommend it.

Essential reference guide for confused indie filmmakers!.......1998-12-01
There are many upsides to this fest guide book, the contact information is first rate and the AMOUNT of international festivals blew me away! First of all as a low-budget filmmaker I had no idea there were that many festivals out there for me! I also liked the articles from other filmmakers and I'm hoping the author will have more of that in the next edition. The guide could do with a blast of color but really that's just minor. As a reference guide, I've recommended it to my colleagues.

I actually stumbled on this guide inadvertently and after scanning the others, selected this particular festival guide. The descriptions were clear without being cutesy and the comments section was very valuable. I like the extensive contact information and the indexing is very thorough. As an indie Canadian filmmaker I would like to thank Mr. Stolberg for his efforts.

Worth reading to view another perspective of a film festival. Written like a documentary with interviews from participants in the festival. Good for other student filmmakers and anyone who wants to become a filmmaker. The dvd alone has enough to give you an eyeful of original filmmaking.

For much of his career, the internationally known, and still active Dutch composer Louis Andriessen has been understood as an iconoclast who challenged and resisted the musical establishment. This book explores his compositions as a case study for exploring the social and aesthetic implications of new music. Everett chronicles the evolution of Andriessen’s music over the course of five decades: the formative years in which he experimented with serialism and collage techniques; his political activism in the late 1960s; ‘concept’ works from the 1970s that provide musical commentary on philosophical writings by Plato, St Augustine and others; theatrical and operatic collaborations with Robert Wilson and Peter Greenaway in the 1980s and 1990s; and recent works that explore contemplative themes on death and madness. Everett’s analysis of Andriessen’s music draws on theories of parody, narrativity, and intertextuality that have gained currency in musicological discourse in recent years.

Louis Andriessen is one of the foremost composers in the world today. His music, with its distinctive blend of jazz, minimalism, Stravinsky and the European avant-garde, has attracted wide audiences internationally and made him a sought-after teacher among younger generations of composers. De Staat ('The Republic') brought Andriessen to international attention in 1976, and it remains his best-known work.
This book is the first extended, single-author study of Andriessen in any language. It opens with a detailed account of Andriessen's involvement in the political upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s which formed the basis for his later views on instrumentation and musical style. The following chapters assess the principal influences on his music and the musical structure of De Staat. The book closes with an extensive discussion of the meaning of De Staat in the light of the composer's firmly held socio-political views.
An accompanying CD includes a thrilling live recording of De Staat from the 1978 Holland Festival, plus two earlier works not previously commercially available on compact disc - De Volharding and Il Principe.

It helped me get into Wharton.......2006-09-15
I just graduated from Wharton and work for a top consulting firm, and I have to say that this book definately helped me get my game on for the application process. It gave valuable insight into what the application committees would be looking for as well as where to focus my energy, when to apply, and what school would fit me best. It gives a great sense of the nuances between schools so you can tailor your entire application package to speak that school's 'language'. It might be a bit dated since it was written in 2001, but MBA's are really competitive again so the principles stand. I highly recommend it.

I'll admit...I'm a research addict. In addition to talking to admissions staff, current students, and alumni I also bought about 8 different MBA books to compare strategies, advice, and perspectives.
This book was my favorite resource. It's strategies were clear and concise on how to approach the application process from timelines to essay steps. Warning: The book is dated so I did not use it for referencing school statistics (leveraged BusinessWeek Online and school websites) to fill in the holes.
But the perspectives of the students on each school. This gave me valued insight into what attributes to highlight for each school application. In the end, it all worked out for me and I got into the Ivy League MBA program I wanted.
In hindsight, I really did not need any other MBA book.

It covers Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, MIT, Chicago, Columbia, Berkeley, NYU, and INSEAD, but the strategies can be generalized to all schools. Does a great job of providing excellent insider information on each University, as well as providing strategies to each.
Others to look at:
1. ABC of Getting the MBA Admissions Edge: My personal favorite. It covers Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, MIT, Chicago, Columbia, Berkeley, NYU, and INSEAD, but the strategies can be generalized to all schools.
2. Your MBA Game Plan: Great overall resource! Has information about Top-30 Schools and general information about App Strategy, GMAT, Essays, and Letter of Recs.
3. How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs: Very good Resource. The most comprehensive list of old essays.
4. Business Week Best Business Schools: In-Depth info on Top-30 Schools. Good reference to get the 411 on each school.
5. WSJ Top Business School: Good reference to what recruiters think of each school.
6. USNew's America's Best Graduate Schools: In my opinion the most comprehensive/accurate rankings (BW, WSJ, FT, Forbes) on the market.
great advice for top b-schools.......2004-07-16
There seems to be no shortage of advice for applying to b-school. This book stands out for a number of reasons:
- in-depth review of the top schools (HBS, Stanford, Wharton etc), which is not ony invaluable in helping to make your selection of schools, but really makes a difference when you then apply. Schools all want to know why you are interested in their program, and The MBA Admissions Edge is the only book that gives such insight.
- clear and helpful advice for essays, interviews, letters of rec. The book provides the perspective from successful applicants at the top 10 schools, which gives a rounded picture of the interview process, or the ideas that lie behind the essays.
- good section on school reputation, explaining the various rankings, specializations.
