Why Hasn't Anyone Else Reviewed This Book Yet????.......2004-01-24
Some of you might not be aware of this, and some of you might be: I am a cross-sections addict! If there was a cross-sections book on something as meaningless to me as the insides of a toilet, chances are that I'd be interested in it. That said...after reading Inside the Worlds of Episode 2 I can't help but wonder why no one else has reviewed this. I mean, it's not like it was released a few days ago. This has some sights in it that are, in my opinion, simply incredible. The Clone Army's training center alone was worth buying this book. The book even lays out events like the ending battle in the movie and routes taken during the speeder chase on coruscant. There's stuff in here that was never mentioned in the movie (even in the deleted scenes), and it's stuff that makes the world of Star Wars just come alive in its own way. Now, Mr. Lucas, once you're done with Episode 3, how about making a movie where you give a tour of these locations?

Essential Reference.......2000-04-11
This 112 page book is number 43 in the English National Operaseries of opera guides. Unlike most of in the series, this guidecovers two operas -- the two large scale vocal/stage works of IgorStravinsky. The Rake's Progress is generally regarded as one of the few 20th century operas that has found its way into the standard repertory.
As in the other guides in this series, this book is a compilation of essays and writings by several different people and the reader's general familiarity with the works under consideration is assumed. There is no straightforward synopsis of either of the works discussed in this volume although some of the essays provide at least a partial plot synopsis. Rather, in addition to the complete libretto and English translation of the libretto, the essays discuss historical or analytical features of the works.
The major piece on Oedipus Rex is an essay by David Rice titled "The Person of Fate and the Fate of the Person: Stravinsky's 'Oedipus Rex.'" Also included is an appreciation of the work by the composer Judith Weir, a personal history of the work by Jean Cocteau, the librettist, and a thematic catalogue.
For The Rake's Progress, two major essays are included: one discussing the historical events that led to the writing of the libretto; and, the second discussing the opera's use of classical forms and gestures. The complete libretto is included as well as a verse prologue written by the librettists, W.H.Auden and Chester Kallman, for a 1958 television broadcast of the opera's last five scenes. A bibliography and selected discography is included for both operas. END

Book Description
Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex is widely acknowledged as one of the most original musical theater works of the twentieth century. This clear and concise guide, the first ever written on the work, describes the plot, the music and the staging in close detail and provides a fully documented discussion of the origins of Oedipus Rex in Stravinsky's own work and thinking. By placing the work in its social context, the author paints a vivid picture of Parisian artistic politics in the twenties, from which emerged one of the richest and most suggestive works of modern times. The full libretto is provided, with a parallel translation.

Book Description
In Multiple Masks, Maureen A. Carr studies Igor Stravinsky's creative process for Oedipus Rex, Apollo, Perséphone, and Orpheus through his musical sketches and other documents—scenarios, librettos, correspondence, reviews, and philosophical commentaries, as well as previously uncited sources for Stravinsky's book Poetics of Music. A clear explanation of Stravinsky's compositional techniques within a broad cultural context emerges for each of these four significant works. Carr concludes that Stravinsky used Greek myths as filters for certain poetic ideas and musical techniques that he developed in his earlier works. At the same time the mythological story lines provided him with the objective stance that he was seeking in these neoclassical works.

A beautiful reference for two marvelous works.......2000-08-02
"Oedipus Rex" and "Symphony of Psalms" are the peak of Stravinsky's neo-classical period and his two most important works in latin. This edition is wonderful, the score is big and clearly printed and it's strongly sewed together.I bought it in order to study these two pieces which I love, and I think for this price is a real bargain. It's much more than a study score. It includes prefaces with historical and musical backgrounds for each work. It's a excellent edition of two of the masterpieces of the XX century.A must for any Stravinsky lover.

Book Description
For more than 100 years, the world's leading chess players and teachers have told their students to study the endgame. Now, for the first time, a revolutionary, richly instructive endgame book has been designed for players of all levels. Silman's Complete Endgame Course, by famed writer and player Jeremy Silman, is the one and only endgame book you'll need as you move up the ladder from beginner to strong tournament player and finally to master.
Designed to "speak" to a player in a very personal way, Silman's book teaches the student everything he or she needs to know at his or her current rating level, and builds on that knowledge for each subsequent phase of the player's development. Starting at the beginner's level, all basic mates are clearly and painstakingly explained. After that, the critical building blocks that form the endgame foundation for all tournament hopefuls and experienced tournament competitors are explored in detail. Finally, advanced endgame secrets based on concepts rather than memorization are presented in a way that makes them easy to master.
The basic keys to a well-rounded endgame education--Opposition, the Lucena and Philidor Positions, Cat and Mouse, Trebuchet, Fox in the Chicken Coup, Triangulation, Building a Box, Square of a Pawn, Outflanking, the Principle of Two Weaknesses--are vital. But equally important is creating a love of the endgame, which is addressed at the end of the book with a look at chess tactics, minor piece domination, and a discussion of the five greatest endgame players of all time--all things that every fan of chess at every level can enjoy.
If you have found the endgame to be a mystery, if you have found that your confidence plummets once you reach an endgame, if you have searched for an instructive endgame book that will turn your weakest link--your endgame--into your personal field of power, your search is over. Silman's Complete Endgame Course is the key to a world of essential ideas, startling beauty, and stunning creativity.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best chess books........2007-08-23
I have been studying chess (with a coach) for eight months, and I have found that most chess books are written for players way above my current ability. This one, though, is terrific. It takes you from beginning endgame stuff steadily through more difficult material, building on itself as it goes.
Good endgame book, especially for the beginner.......2007-08-23
I have found this book to be helpful and useful, especially for the beginner. It separates each endgame "course" according to rating, so that the beginner is not trying to learn moves for a class A player, and a class A player doesn't have to slog through stuff they've known for years. I highly recommend it.
Gives you what you need and don't need to know.......2007-08-16
I'm not going to repeat what everyone else has said in their reviews.
Yes - brilliant concept, sorting endgames by playing strength. Stroke of genius. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before. Etc
I'd just like to say how liberating it is to read an instructional chess book and know that I can stop after a certain number of chapters because I already know more than enough.
There are not many chess books that explicitly state: "you already know enough about this - now go and practise some tactics and come back when you get a few games under your belt".
The hardest part about studying the endgame is knowing when to stop.
This book tells you what you DON'T need to know as well as what you DO.
Lucena position - don't worry about it just yet - get your rating up first.
Knight and Bishop versus Lone King - it ain't gonna happen.
How refreshing!
Wonderful.......2007-08-13
This is a step by step guide to the endgame. There has been a competition between two types of endgame books - those that want you to memorize thousands of positions and those who want you to understand various concepts and memorize only a couple positions. The problem becomes that the first is very time consuming but straight forward and the later is much faster but very difficult to understand.
This book gives the speed of learning concepts with the straightforwardness of memorizing positions. Silman has out done himself this time.
The only downside to this book is that it does not show how to checkmate with Knight and Bishop vs King but how many times have you actually been in this position? My guess is none and if you have been in it, odds are you never will be again.
I recommend this book for people of skill level from beginner to master.
Superb book to learn endgames.......2007-07-23
This was the second endgame book I bought. The first, "Just the Facts Winning Chess Endgames" was organized by endgame type (e.g. Rook Endgames). Silman's is truly a course, with chapters for beginners on up by rating. So rather than trying to master everything there is about rook endgames, Silman gives you what you need to know for your ability level. You revisit different endgames as you progress through the chapters.
I love all of Silman's books that I've read so far, and this one is no exception! If you're already a top-notch player, maybe any endgame book will work for you. But if you're learning, Silman's can't be beat!
Customer Reviews:
A great coursebook.......2007-01-12
My chessclub now uses this to teach new people the game. GM Alburt provides great insight and an easy to follow course. Easily gets a beginner to the 1400-1600 range. Teaching with it is great review for a more skilled player. Plus, there are some things a better player coming up through the American chess system will find useful.
Lev Alburt's materials work! TRUST ME! I KNOW!.......2005-12-08
I bought the first and second volumes of Lev Alburt's chess course. The first one, I ended up teaching my little brother, and he learned how to play chess up to the intermediate level. Oddly, I had learned most of volume I throughout playing 20 years of chess. At 34, I managed to buy volume II, and it took me a little over a month to complete the volume II. It taught me endgame knowledge I was not incorporating into my play. Something extremely important! It also taught me what I need to know to get to my desired 1800 strength. I now play with great insight into the endgame and know that opening is minor to the class player. I discover tactics work better. GM Alburt also autographed my first copy, as I remember. :) Plainly put, I do not see how anyone anywhere cannot reach at least a 1500 USCF playing strength if they truly live and study Alburt's two volumes of the Comprehensive Chess Course. And, if someone truly mastered all the materials in volumes I and II - incorporating them all into their play (including all the ideas in the 100 annotated games) - there would be no surprise if they reached an 1800 A-Class strength. I have noticed a difference in my chess already by 100 points, and I was rated in the 1400s. Now, my chess has climbed into the 1500s, and continues to grow! It would be in the 1600s if I played all my games at my full strength. Thank you Lev Alburt for such an outstanding set of books! I just recently purchased Tactics for the Tournament player - the third book which takes you beyond A&B class player. 1800 here I come! Bucky Adams
Slow Methods Using Old Communist Way of Thinking.......2005-01-31
I am both a history and chess person. And, I learned in school that using both chess and the making of jam has a lot to do with each other in the way Russia was run under communism. The Government supported chess and wanted every kid to learn (this was good!). But because they didn't have enough chess teachers to go around teaching every kid at every school they needed a simple way for teachers to teach the masses. The answer was a slow way to get teachers to read material and go through things step by step. So there was a method for teachers who knew little or nothing about chess.
Now if you introduced chess to every kid in the United States this way and then had the good teachers work with the ones that show talant then you would produce far more grandmasters than any other country by far. Russians didn't dominate the world by the quality of teaching, but by sheer numbers. Actually this is the communist way (which worked) to defeat Germany in World War Two. They sacrificed about 10 Russian Soldiers for every 1 German Soldier in mass assualts. They could afford the lives and the method to win was not because of superior strategy but because of sheer numbers they could afford to lose. Now look at Germany and look at Russia. Who really won WW2? Germany is rich and now Russia is a disaster because of their entire communist system. It will take them many more years to get out of their mess. Russian Grandmasters have moved from Russia to get away from their poverty.
This book takes the old outmoded way of teaching chess to the masses and trys to dump it on you, trying to tell you because Russian dominated the chess world this must be good.
Just ask Fischer, who may not really be a chess teacher, but he put communist Russia to shame.
The writers of this book were born and raised in communist Russian. Though good players they lack efficient teaching skills. Chess itself doesn't have anything to do with communism. But teaching methods do.
I liked it.......2005-01-28
I liked it because it has a lot of things to learn from in it. I didnot find it entertaining but the things it covers are good.
Lacks Organization and much more.......2005-01-26
This book looks very impressive when you see it in bookstore - it is big. But I learned my lesson as big doesn't mean it is great. When I got into the material I suddenly discovered that there was an extreme lack of organization. Daa, the book didn't explain what the objective of the game was at the very beginning. It seemed like a person from another country wrote this book with a lack of command of the English Language, then flip flopped around. Well, in looking at this book further and looking at some of the other reviews, I suddenly realized that this book was written as if it was for teachers who didn't know much about chess to introduce them to a classroom. Now this may not sound too bad. However, the problem with is is that it takes things so slowly and out of the order that an experienced chess teacher would use that you have the MOST POORLY WRITTEN BEGINNER'S BOOK ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. How do I know this? Well, I made an issue of going out and getting several other books that were popular (yes, you might argue 'not every other one' but at least I got what is considered best by popularity to compare). So I got 'Starting Chess', 'Chess For Juniors', 'Chess For Dummies' and 'Idiots Guide to Chess'. Here is what I found - CHESS FOR JUNIORS was the most simple and most easy book of them all to understand though it may not have had as many pages a child of say eight could read it and fully understand it. I ranked this as best. I personally recommend this book as best for even an adult. Now adults would probably benefit most by either getting 'Chess For Juniors' or 'Idiots Guide to Chess'. The Idiots Guide is well organized and though not as easy to understand as 'Chess For Juniors' it does a good job. The 'Chess for Dummy's' book is not very well organized or written, but better for an adult than the Comprehensive Chess Courese. As a second best book for Children, but not so easy for Children themselves to Learn from (a parent should help) I suggest 'Starting Chess'. I spent some good time looking over these books and hope this review will be helpful for someone looking for a beginning book.

Book Description
Try this "first course" on chess, with its many diagrams and step-by-step examples of chess rules and strategies to prepare for play. It teaches you how to attack, defend, and move quickly toward checkmate. Special sections cover tactics for every phase of the game, and give strategic approaches for each chess figure. Finally, case studies take you move by move through crucial situations you're likely to encounter.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction and good annotations.......2004-12-09
It had been a few decades since I had played, so this book provided a good reintroduction (and training on newer notation). Heyken gives a brief history of the chess world champions (through 1996) and this gives a taste of the individuals whose games you will see later in the book. The rules, and moves of the pieces are quickly introduced, and unique section entitled "If Chess Pieces Could Talk" gives a humorous perspective on the strengths of the pieces. The meat of the book is in looking at strategies and six complete games are played through along with analysis of the strength of key moves. There are ample diagrams included, and I found it helpful to play along on an actual chess board.
Don't neglect the 20 exercises included in the 3 tests. Particularly in the 9 exercises in test 3, it is worthwhile after answering (and there are two hints included for each question) to play the complete game included in the answers.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for All Direct Marketers.......2007-10-03
No Direct Marketer's library is complete without Bob Stone's book. While I have been in the industry for some time, I often think to myself "What would Bob do?" This book has had major influence on my career. The concepts apply to my field (Internet marketing) and they also could be applied to traditional marketers as well. Great book!
Ideally Should be Updated Annually.......2006-01-11
I expected it to be much more current, I expected less paragraghs and quite a bit more job descriptions (that did not exist in 2001) AND print-outs of the day-to-day life of Direct Marketing.
What I had was a SOLID, YET dated introduction to the field as it entered the new millenia vs. the primer that I could hold on to that I was seeking.
Don't get me wrong, these authors are legendary and some of the most qualified to write a text for academia on Direct Marketing.
It is just between the 2001 and 2006 editions I wished that someone else
wrote a equally qualified text that would have been assigned instead of or in addition to this text.
Good entry-level Direct-Marketing Overview.......2004-11-24
If you have never been involved in Direct Marketing this is a great overview of most of the relevant issues and opportunities. The text is accurate and concise. Maybe the only (small) flaw with this text book is that it looks at too broad a spectrum of media and is a little too shallow on the core of all direct marketing: database setup and modelling. But then again that may just be too tedious for someone just wanting a quick overview of the field.
Don't reinvent the wheel.......2002-02-28
This edition is one of the best texts on direct marketing. A classic text that everyone involved in direct marketing should read, this edition includes a lot more material on digital forms of direct marketing than the previous versions. These digital forms include marketing via the Internet; from banners and buttons to e-mail, online merchandising and website navigation and many other concerns. The text covers every form of direct marketing in detail as well as many case studies to show how they were used or are being used successfully.
