Probably the best book for the average player.......2005-12-22
Really Good Read on a critical subject.......2004-05-27
Beyond that rating level, something more like Shereshevkys' series would be more appropriate.
Don't be put off by the single reviewer who signed on and left 3 reviews (two from Australia, one from new York) with 1 star. He clearly has some sort of ax to grind.
This book is very good, and worth getting.
Amazon.com needs to do a better job at eliminating multiple reviews from the same person.
What Secrets?.......2003-07-26
I have never read a book with so little genuine chess content. The vast majority of the book consists of stupid (and annoying) discussion between the author, and a pupil concerning endgame principles. The trouble is, the discussion is so general and basic as to be meaningless. It only offers basic principles such as "keep your rook active", with little to no practical examples.
The book fails to cover numerous key endgame topics, such as pawn structures, pawn breakthroughs, entry squares for the king.
The title is completely misleading. The book is limited to basic concepts, which even then, are poorly explained, with very little supporting analysis or examples. The depth of analysis is truly pathetic - frequently no more than one or two lines of play, looking ahead 3-4 moves. If only endgames were this simple.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.
What Secrets?.......2003-07-25
Contrary to the title, it contains no secrets whatsoever. Rather, it states no more than obvious principles that any half decent player knows. What's more, it is full of general statements, lacking in concrete examples. Further, numerous key topics are not covered at all; eg pawn break throughs; penetration squares for the King.
The book contains extremely little analysis. On numerous occasions, it says something like: "If White plays this move, he should draw" without offering any supporting analysis whatsoever.
Making it even worse is the endless discussion between the author and pupil. I suspect this was put it to compensate for the lack of genuine chess content. Take out the endless dialogue bewteeen author and pupil and the book would only be around 20 pages.
Don't buy this book.
Don't waste your money.......2003-07-24
The analysis of positions is extremely scant; typically one or two lines of play only, looking ahead just four moves.
A more appropriate title for the book would be "Secrets for Players Rated Below 1200". For example, the book contains such wonderful insights as "Passed pawns increase in value as they progress further down the board" - hardly the insight of a grandmaster.
Don't waste your money.

Grandmaster Secrets - The Caro-Kann
Peter Wells Manufacturer: Gambit Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1904600611 |
Product Description
Chess Explained is a new series of books about chess openings. They are not theoretical works in the traditional sense, but more a series of lessons from a chess expert with extensive over-the-board experience with an opening. You will gain an understanding of the opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have. The Caro-Kann is one of the most popular responses to 1 e4. Black stakes a claim to the central squares and seeks free development for all his pieces. While solid, it is by no means a drawing weapon the resulting positions generally contain at least a degree of imbalance and the critical lines lead to sharp positions with chances for both sides. Many new approaches for both sides have been developed in recent years, and a good understanding of these ideas is vital for anyone looking to handle either side of the Caro with success.

In-depth analysis of 24 fighting games by John Nunn.......2004-12-08
Very strong effort.......2000-05-22
But coming back to SGC. This book can be unequivocally recommended as a top-flight book. These are the games and notes of a strong, modern Grandmaster who plays mainline openings, and has a preference for complex, tactical chess. Nunn has to be considered the strongest, most professional chess writer currently around.
The book is most likely to be useful to players who are rated at least 1800 or 1900. The earlier SGP could be used with profit by players at least 1700, or perhaps even 1600.
A must have book for the diligent player.......2000-04-03
My Best Chessbook.......2000-02-11
Of course, it is very detailed, but I think I can follow the discussions quite well. And, you don't have to go through every detail if you don't have the time. Sometimes, I also read it in bed before I go to sleep.
The anecdotes placed between the games are also worth reading.
I highly recommend this book!

The people (John van der Wiel c.s.) who put up the special Nobel Prize for anyone who succeeds in refuting the Petroff Defence, will probably also be prepared to offer some kind of award to whoever draws the fangs of the Marshall Attack, another annoying drawing weapon for Black in the 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 repertoire. It appears that there have been rumours buzzing on the Internet about such a refutation, but, as Van der Tak explains, Marshall addicts need not despair yet.
Mr. José Vilela draws attention to an unusual way for Black to meet the French Advance Variation, Jeroen Bosch reports on some interesting opening ideas he witnessed in the recent Copenhagen Tournament and A.C. van der Tak updates a few surveys from previous Yearbooks, all in 1.e4 territory (SI 9.9, RG 2.5 and KP 12.5).
One of the few 1.d4 contributions sees Alexander Morozevich coming to the rescue of his old favourite, the Chigorin Defence.

Keeping Score: Using the Right Metrics to Drive World Class Performance
Mark Graham Brown Manufacturer: Productivity Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1563273551 |
Book Description
Now In Paperback! Develop an effective measurement system by targeting the vital few key measures!Keeping Score: Using the Right Metrics to Drive World-Class Performance ensures that you look at the right measurements. Following a Baldrige approach, Mark Graham Brown shows you how to evaluate your current approach to measurement and redesign inadequate metrics and systems used to collect and report data. He contends that your measurements must focus on the past, present, and future and be based on the needs of customers, shareholders, and employees - pinpointing the vital few key measures is the key to success.
This book will ensure that you correctly measure:
Customer satisfaction and value. The quality of products and services before they reach the customer. Employee satisfaction. Keeping Score will help you improve the accuracy of your metrics by linking them to key success factors as well as learn how to select the right financial metrics, perform process measurement, and track supplier performance.

Good stuff!.......2004-05-12
This book shows you how to pinpoint key measures, evaluate your measurement approach, and redesign inadequate metrics. I find it a very useful guide for my executive coaching and consulting practice.
Substantially Unsubstantial.......2003-06-24
Keeping Score is a good high-level review of the importance of metrics in strategy-driven organizations. Brown employs Kaplan & Norton's balanced scorecard methodology to illustrate the relationship between measurement and strategy. He doesn't really deliver much more than you would find in Kaplan & Norton's classic Balanced Scorecard book. I would like to have seen more suggested metrics around the various "themes": financial performance, customer satisfaction, product/service quality, process and operation performance, supplier performance, and employee satisfaction. I know macro- and micro-metrics are organization-specific; however, there are "generic" financial and satisfaction metrics he could offer. The Measurement System Self-Assessment 50 -item survey illustrated in the book is a great resource. It can easily be customized, automated and administered to stakeholders responsible for developing measurement systems. I applaud Brown for consistently reinforcing the formative rather than purely summative evaluation model. That is, any measurement system must contain historical (lagging), current, and forecasting (leading) measures. Those systems that are driven by summative data (i.e., historical) do not serve the real purpose of a measurement system, which is to allow stakeholders to make well-informed and better business decisions. Oftentimes, Brown downplays the complexity of developing and implementing a measurement system. He makes statements such as "Measurement is easy" and "Designing your own new and improved measurement system may not be a much work as you think..." These kinds of statements are worrisome and misleading because developing a robust measurement system aligned with organizational strategy is no simple feat. Nor, should it be. One extremely important area that is only slightly addressed is that of system maintenance and integrating the system into business processes. Once a measurement system has been established clear guidelines should be established as to how the data will be employed and used to make decisions. A truly strategic organization will incorporate the measurement system into the daily operations of the organization.
