    Product Description

This history and catalog of the movie theaters of Illinois follows their evolution from the early opera houses, to the storefront nickelodeons, to the awe-inspiring movie palaces, to the post—World War II theaters and the advent of the multiplex. Each theater has its own story, and together these stories make up a fascinating history of cinema viewing in Illinois. This richly illustrated book—the first dealing exclusively with Illinois theatres— contains nearly 3,000 descriptions of historic movie houses, from the early 1880s to 1960. The alphabetically arranged entries, which include such information as the theater’s name, location, number of seats, and the dates it opened and closed, cover cities and towns from Abingdon to Zion, including Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The book opens with a history of the movie house, beginning with silent movies shown on walls and ending with the multiplex era. It also includes a chapter on television's impact and information on renovated historic theatres in the state. Appendices include lists of Illinois-operated movie theatre circuits, theatre websites and include a bibliography.

This is the bible for children's folksongs, with artwork by Barbara Cooney the icing on the cake!

5 out of 5 stars Reprint of a great classic.......2005-10-07

This is the book with the favorite songs from my long ago childhood. So I bought it for my daughter so she could sing these to my grandchildren.

It has the good songs. Songs with lots and lots of verses. Fun songs for older kids and songs to sing babies to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Treasury of Songs.......2005-10-06

This book is a treasure! The introduction gives a wonderful background on these authentic folk songs and how they can be used with children. This is an essential book for music teachers, but also great for parents. Be careful, though, because once the children know the songs you'll hear them over and over again... :)

5 out of 5 stars The Old Standby For the Early Childhood Teacher.......2004-05-18

I own a copy of the original print of this book. It posseses some of the most whimsical little songs I have yet to hear. Its just...fabulous...and I don't even know how to play any instruments....lol

5 out of 5 stars Every Music Teacher should have a copy of this........1999-05-07

Our family has loved this songbook very much. There are ninety songs in the book. Written by Pete Seeger's sister, American Folk Songs for children has songs each of them suggests an activity. There are songs for going places, songs for knocking on doors and windows, songs for eating, songs for dancing, and many others. I would like to buy a copy as a gift, and I hope there is a reprint date soon.

    Book Description

Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) is frequently considered the most significant American female composer in this century. Joining Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell as a key member of the 1920s musical avant-garde, she went on to study with modernist theorist and future husband Charles Seeger, writing her masterpiece, String Quartet 1931, not long after. But her legacy extends far beyond the cutting edge of modern music. Collaborating with poet Carl Sandburg on folk song arrangements in the twenties, and with the famous folk-song collectors John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, she emerged as a central figure in the American folk music revival, issuing several important books of transcriptions and arrangements and pioneering the use of American folk songs in children's music education. Radicalized by the Depression, she spent much of the ensuing two decades working aggressively for social change with her husband and stepson, the folksinger Pete Seeger. This engrossing new biography emphasizes the choices Crawford Seeger made in her roles as composer, activist, teacher, wife and mother. The first woman to win a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in music composition, Crawford Seeger nearly gave up writing music as the demands of family, politics, and the folk song movement intervened. It was only at the very end of her life, with cancer sapping her strength, that she returned to composing. Written with unique insight and compassion, this book offers the definitive treatment of a fascinating twentieth-century figure.

5 out of 5 stars a musical revolutionary from many perspectives.......1999-06-28

Judith Tick does an indispensable service here in writing the first full-length biography of Ruth Crawford Seeger. And it is a damn shame that Seeger was takened in 1951 an early age for someone with a consummate gift for composition. Tick traverses her entire life down to the walks from one library to another to concerts in Chicago, along Michigan Avenue. Infrequently we never read about Seeger's radicalism, her days, as most artists with the Labour Movement in the United States throughout the early part of this century. Tick makes us believe Seeger's understanding of this, not only in writing politically progressive music, music which identifies with the exploited, but how these experiences in facing these dark times informed her more abstract music. Tick gives a great narrative on these pre-McCarthy Era times, placing Seeger's work in a context,in fact so much so that her creativity suffered under too much involvement.

      Book Description

This is the first publication of an annotated monograph by the noted composer and folksong scholar Ruth Crawford Seeger. Originally written as a foreword for the 1940 book Our Singing Country, it was considered too long and was replaced by a much shorter version. According to her stepson, Pete Seeger, when the original was not included "Ruth suffered one of the biggest disappointments of the last ten years of her life. It just killed her . . . She was trying to analyze the whole style and problem of performing this music." Along with her children Mike and Peggy Seeger, he has long desired to see this work in print as it was meant to be read. The manuscript has been edited from several varying sources by Larry Polansky, with the assistance of Seeger's biographer Judith Tick. It is divided into two sections: I. 'A Note on Transcription' and II. 'Notes on the Songs and on Manners of Singing.' Seeger examines all aspects of the relationship between singer, song, notation, the eventual performer, and the transcriber. In Section I, Seeger develops a complex and well-organized system of notation for these songs which is meant to be both descritive (transcription as cultural preservation) and prescriptive (she intended that others would be able to perform these songs). In Section II, she provides an interpretive theory for performance of this music, and suggests how performers might make the songs 'their own' through a deep knowledge of the original styles. Ruth Crawford Seeger considered this work to be both a major accomplishment and a central statement of herown ideas on the topic. Larry Polansky is Associate Professor of Music at Dartmouth College, and a well-known composer and theorist on American music. Judith Tick is Professor of Music at Northeastern University and author of the first major biography of Ruth Crawford Seeger.

        Book Description

Ruth Crawford Seeger's Worlds offers new perspectives on the life and pioneering musical activities of American composer and folk music activist Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-53). Ruth Crawford developed a unique modernist style with such now-esteemed works as her String Quartet 1931. In 1933, after marrying Charles Seeger, she turned to the work of teaching music to children and of transcribing, arranging, and publishing folk songs.BR> This collection of studies by musicologists, music theorists, folklorists, historians, music educators, and women's studies scholars reveals how innovation and tradition have intertwined in surprising ways to shape the cultural landscape of twentieth-century America. 5 out of 5 stars songs and illustration that invite organic imagination........1999-10-25

I am somewhat astonished by this collection of folk songs collected from mainly the southern Appalacians(but containing songs even from old California and other far places). My surprise comes from the fact that someone has been able to stay to the real(I'd underline that real if I knew how on this computer). As we know, music seems to change ownership. I believe, now, many Japanese business people own much of the copyrighted American music. But that's if we want to talk about nationality and other abstract and arbitrary concepts. The trancriptions for piano and voice from fiddles and other folk instruments are honest and stylization free except as simple, beautiful, and funny expressions that get the imagination going. I'm grateful for this collection because my mark for true has become more clear.

              Book Description

This book explores the work of three significant American women composers of the twentieth century: Ruth Crawford, Marion Bauer and Miriam Gideon. It offers information on both their lives and music and skillfully interweaves history and musical analysis in ways that both the specialist and the more general reader will find compelling. Ellie Hisama suggests that recognizing the impact of a composer's identity on the music itself imparts valuable ways of hearing and understanding these works and breaks important new ground toward constructing a feminist music theory.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting if dry and incomplete.......2005-04-22

Asian-American Hisama analyzes only seven post-tonal works by female modernist composers Crawford, Bauer, and Gideon, and those who appreciate their music should enjoy this book. She applies formalist analysis (statistics and counting, considered objective and scientific), inspired and then interpreted by what is known of the cultural, historical, and personal context of the composer in question. This controversial approach is often known as cultural analysis (considered postmodern), and, though you may disagree, the final reading of the pieces are compelling. For example, she suggest an alternate interpretation for the first work she close reads, Crawfords String Quarter 3rd movement, that is based on cyclic registral weaving of voices rather than the prevalent reading of the movement as consisting of one sound mass which builds to a climax and subsides. Though the reasoning may be speculative, a performance inspired by this would be perfectly valid and bring to light new aspects of the work (which may then inspire new analysis). Though Hisma quite clearly explains the biographical or cultural details and then clearly explains the formal details after a brief explination of their connection, she does not then go back over and reshow the connection once the formal details are explained.

5 out of 5 stars Teams At Work.......2000-10-25

The idea - and advantages - of working together as a team is not new to me. But developing and implementing these ideas, with individuals coming out of an established non-team environment, will be more than challenging. TEAMS AT WORK gave me 7 basic fundamentals to use as a foundation to get started. More importantly, as the teams become integrated and work toward common goals, it will be a valuable resource to have on hand.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Learning Application.......2000-10-10

Team at Work focuses on practical, innovative techniques for developing the interpersonal and technical skills of workteams. The 7 Keys to Success were invaluable in our journey from a traditional structure to a team-based organization. Even today, our teams revisit Teams at Work, thus maintaining the strong foundation Suzanne Zoglio helped us to achieve. An excellent read and learning application!

5 out of 5 stars Our road map to Success!.......2000-10-06

5 years ago, our plant shifted from a "top down" style of management to a team-based format. We selected as our model, Suzanne Zoglio's "Teams At Work" book. It not only became the sole resource for development of our employees into the team concept, but we have revisited this book countless times as a reference for staying on track in today's ever changing business world. A well worn copy sits on my desk today. I wouldn't be without it. Superior Guidance from Suzanne!!

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guidance for Any Team.......2000-10-05

In this day of limited resources and time, I look for tools that one can simply give to a team for self-development. "Teams at Work" is one of those rare offerings that is so complete, simple, and practical that almost anyone can develop a functioning team by using it. For example, developing a team mission. The book walks team members through several practical steps and exercises to help them develop a team mission. The same with a team vision, and then translating this vision into team goals. Many books will discuss these in principle, but few actually offer an exercise and steps for the team to follow. And it is this way with every chapter of the book. If you want deep theory, don't buy this book. If you want something you can hand to a team and say "go to it," then this is the tool for you.

5 out of 5 stars Used book and Training Materials at two corporations in NJ.......2000-03-18

After seeing the power of "Teams At Work" in two different corporations I feel this is a must read, must use book. If a group is looking for results and knows the power a well functioning team can provide, the program Dr. Zoglio offers is a winner. Programs and trainings come and go, but this one will stick!
