Apple's Final Cut Pro has quickly become a dominant force in the field of digital video editing, but newcomers are forced to learn about things other than editing on the road to becoming good editors. Because the craft is so closely related to the technology, Final Cut Pro 2 Editing Workshop, an outstanding book written by an experienced editor, offers information on not just the technique of using the program but on the hardware on which it should run.
The book opens with a discussion of what you really need in terms of hardware and explains why some drives are better than others, how much disk space you'll need to edit a 30-second commercial versus a 90-minute feature, speakers, monitors, and more. Only after the hardware is squared away and Final Cut Pro properly installed does it discuss the application itself.
The book covers everything from setting up the application to adding clips; editing; and export and compression of finished projects. There is plenty here to help you learn about the mechanics of the program itself, but the book really shines when Wolsky moves away from "push-this-button" mode and into areas of editing technique and language. It is here where we learn that different techniques and styles are used for different kinds of films, and this introduction to the language of film is worth the cost of the book.
There are few things as valuable as a book written by an experienced, working professional. Tom Wolsky is such a professional, and his book reflects his years of work and study as a producer, editor, and teacher. This is an invaluable book not just for people who want to master Final Cut, but also for anyone interested in learning to edit film and video with real proficiency. --Mike Caputo

Customer Reviews:
The original workshop book for FCP!.......2002-09-10
I love this book. It's a robust mix of exercises and software how-to, unique among all the FCP books I've read. I'm very glad to have it in my library.
Unique coverage of FCP with candid comparisons.......2002-02-24
The author is candid in his discussion about editing with Final Cut Pro. The most valuable information to me was his numerious comparisons between FCP and other editing software. For example, he points out those areas where other programs might be stronger in certain areas than FCP and specifies those programs. I read the book cover to cover and continually refer back to it as a guide and inspiratoin when editing.
A precise tool, not a blunt instrument.......2001-12-22
Reading many, if not most, software instruction books, is akin to being clubbed by a thousand hammers...overload, overload. They are constructed as reference books, but one has to fight through tons on incidental material to figure out how to use the program.
Tom Wolsky's Final Cut Pro 2 book is, instead, a precise tool, which gets you cutting in no time. Wolsky's credits list him as an editor and a teacher, and his book make it clear he is outstanding in both regards.
The Best of the Crop of FCP Instructional Books.......2001-12-04
At first glance you might think that this book is the same as the other FCP click-step books for the manual-adverse. You'd be wrong. Tom has crafted an excellent instructional work that richly supplements, rather than reiterates, Apple's enormous, exhaustive FCP 2 manual. Certainly he has featured many pages of clear dance-step instruction throughout the book. But, more noteworthy, Tom also incorporates a great deal of contextual insight into why certain features might be useful to the reader and draws upon his professional experience to give readers insights into the professional post-production process.
This book quickly became the mainstay of my FCP editing library. The only feature that would improve upon it is a spiral binding enabling it to lie flat while open!
I Couldn't Put It Down.......2001-12-03
I wrote this to Wolsky, might as well share it with the world:
Hi, guys. I met you at the fcpug last Weds and bought a (signed!) copy of your book. I haven't started to do the tutorial yet but I can't put the book down. It's so clear and easy to understand, and I'm already implementing the stuff I've picked up just from reading, "Now, did he say.... option X? Oh, wow, it works." It's the best book I've seen and I tend to look at everything in hopes that where one person confuses me another will set me straight. Anyway, this is a fan letter. And the writing is extraordinarily fine, literate and grammatical. Thank you.

Customer Reviews:
A gem for vocal teachers and students alike!!.......2006-06-15
I can not say enough about how wonderful this book and accompanying Cd are to singers studying the great Ella Fitzgerald. The demonstrated vocals are of the highest quality and along with the song scores and specific vocal notes accompanying each song, teachers and students alike can begin to understand and marvel at the vocal genius of Ella. Study notes aimed at vocalists are rare and usually extremely vague which makes this book stand out from the rest. I can only hope to find other books like this, looking specifically at the vocal aspects of some of the greatest singers in history.
I can not recommend this book highly enough for all vocalists, teachers, students and anyone who is slightly interested in the mastery that was Ella Fitzgerald.
Helpful Hints.......2001-10-22
This book/CD is amazing. Not only does it include Ella's version of each song, it also has the backtrack, AND the sheet music! After each song in the book, there are a few pages that give you some tips on how to sing the songs JUST like she did! It's SUCH a good buy. It really helped me get ready for my competion this summer. Before I got this book, I didnt know what I was going to compete with, but then I bought it, read a few of the tips, mixed in a bit of my own style, and I got 3rd place out of 30!! Weither you want it for preformance ideas, or just to listen to around the house, it definately has my vote :)

For those of you who have managed in the past to find the right pattern and the perfect new fabric, only to give up in frustration when the fabric doesn't behave like anything you've used before, Fabric Savvy is here to help. Author Sandra Betzina, host of Home and Garden TV's Sew Perfect, has wrestled with just about every fabric out there, and she's lived to tell about it.
Perfectly suited to beginning and experienced sewers alike, this excellent guide devotes, in alphabetical order, two pages to each of 85 fabrics. For every material Betzina highlights a multitude of topics, including fabric facts (bulky/drape/breathable/how fabricated), suitability (types of projects), sewing tips, lay-out (and why it matters), interfacing, stitch length, seam finish, closures, and hemming. The categories are thorough, as is the scope of fabrics addressed: waterproof breathables, tencel, and lame, to name a few, along with 14 types of silk and 8 wools.
Color photographs accompany the descriptions of fabrics and projects, while helpful illustrations further explain the techniques used. Finally, Betzina offers a glossary of fabric terms and a thorough listing of contact information for fabric and alternative pattern companies, making Fabric Savvy a necessary resource for any sewing enthusiast. --Molly McElroy
Book Description
Fabric Savvy is a handy, spiral-bound reference on virtually every fabric imaginable--from the newest to the old favorites. It's a must for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed in a fabric store by all the fabric and notion choices. Fabrics are listed alphabetically for easy reference. Specific information for each fabric includes preshrinking instructions, layout, marking, interfacing, needle and thread options, stitch length, seam finishing, pressing, topstitching, closures, hemming, and more!
Customer Reviews:
A must for sewers.......2007-08-23
A must for your references. Sandra has all the information you need to handle fabrics. Very useful especially when sewing unfamiliar fabrics.
I can't review the item if I don't receive it!!!.......2007-03-31
I still have not recieved the item ordered on 2/28 and today is 3/31. I will be waiting and not placing any more orders from there!!!!!!!!!!
Great Resource for Sewing Various Fabrics.......2006-01-22
This was a great book for providing tips on sewing various fabrics. It contains a 2 page spread for each of the "85 different fabrics" available to the sewer. It includes info about recommended thread and needles, presser foot to use, best cutting method, pressing instructions, closures to use, facts about the fabric and the most suitable garments to make with the fabric.
In the back of the book, starting at page 174, there is an appendix which describes (with illustrations) the various seams, detailing, closures and hems. What would have made this a 5-star was if the book contained slightly more information for the advanced beginner sewer, such as:
~ how to determine the nap on fabric like velvet
~ covered swimsuit fabric
~ glossary of terms used in the book, i.e. mush layers together to marry naps or marry sequins; underlining with silk organza (does this mean put in a lining?)
There is a glossary, but it does not address some of the terms scattered throughout the book. I am giving this book a 4.5 star rating.
An irresistable resource for anyone with a sewing machine.......2005-11-06
Even if you mostly sew with ordinary fabrics, like cotton, it's worth owning a copy of this book. There are plenty of times when you stop in the store and finger a particularly lovely bit of satin, and wonder what's involved in sewing it. This book gives you a clear, brief summary of the essentials -- from which needle to use, to which presser foot, to the items for which the fabric is most appropriate. It takes the pressure out of fabric choice, and makes me feel more confident that yeah, I *could* make seat cushions with that $20/yard ultrasuede.
I hemmed and hawwed (so to speak) over buying this book, but I'm glad I did so.
excellent shipping.......2005-08-22
received book three days after ordering from Abebooks, Bradenton, Fl. just across the state from me. Amazing!
Excellent book, could not do without it.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent beginner's overview.......2007-07-20
In concurrence with other customer reviews, this is an excellent book on the fundamentals of investing. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because the author doesn't address the question so many beginners often pose, "what is a stock?". He provides excellent easy-to-read descriptions of practically every major investing vehicle, but just doesn't broach this most elementary of questions.
Great starter!.......2007-06-16
If you want to be able to understand what the market pros are talking about on CNN, make this book your first pick. You'll learn mostly how the market works and how to use the tools of investing -- more so than how to make big bucks.
Gift.......2007-03-18
I purchased this book for someone else who asked for it as a gift ... all I can say is that they were VERY happy with it and seemed quite thankful that I'd decided to get it for them. Wall Street Journal publications have been, in my experience, excellent for their intended audience and this one seems to be consistent with that track record.
Great starter book.......2007-01-30
For those people out there who are absolutely new to investing this is the first book that you must read. It will help you understand exactly how the stock market works and teach you all the technical jargon that would normally confuse the hell out of you.
Perfect book for those looking to start investing.......2006-06-29
I could'nt figure out all those tables in the Wall Street Journal before reading this book. I'm reading it twice because each page is chalk full of info. Buy if you want to start learning how money works. Great book

Customer Reviews:
Excellent General Guide.......2007-09-17
This book is an excellent source of information about everything related to managing your personal finance. Without getting in too many details, the author covers whatever is required to know in order to build a foundation about personal finance: debit, credit, investing, planning, insurance and taxes.
Recommended to people who never thought about their financial future.
comprehensive but not condescending.......2007-08-26
I was originally looking at the "Personal Finance for Dummies" book, but I felt that it would be embarrasing to have on my home bookshelf. The Wall Street book has been fantastic in helping me make a financial plan for my future. It's comprehensive but not condescending language greatly enlightnened me.
Excellent For Beginners.......2007-05-15
Before reading this book I knew very little about personal finance. It is a very well written, easy to read, informative book for anyone new to this field. It provides a lot of practical information for bettering ones financial situation in day to day living. Picking up a copy of this book is a wise investment in and of itself.
MyMoneyForest.com - Basic Info But Worth Reviewing.......2007-01-17
This book will not contain much for experienced personal finance experts. However, for the average family person this book may provide insight into how to improve your overall financial situation. It explains many aspects of our economy and economic system. It's easy to read and fast to get through.
Excellent book for beginners.......2006-11-30
The beginning of the book (probably limited to first chapter) contains too-basic concepts which made me wonder if I'd bought the right book. But reading further on it proved to be quite useful. To a newbie in this area, it provides a very good introduction to various financial aspects of one's life like buying a home, retirement, savings, etc. If you need to know the ABCs of these things, then this is the book for you. After reading it you'll feel armed before buying a house or investing in mutual funds. Of course, it is not the know-all book only a "beginner's course" and thats reason I gave it 4 stars not 5. It also enumerates good pointers to related websites. Overall, I would recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Retirement Planning .......2007-09-21
This is a very useful book. Unlike most retirement books that just focus on finance, this book takes a holistic look at retirement. Don't get me wrong--this book does address the financial aspect of financial planning (IN PLAIN EASY TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH). However, in addition this book guides the reader (IN PLAIN ENGLISH) through the importance of planning psychologically for retirement. This is well worth the money AND I recommend that if you buy this book you encourage your spouse/significant other to read this book as well. Guarantee it will spark interesting discussions.
The WSJ Complete Retirement Guidbook.......2007-09-11
a little long on generalities in the first part of the book; some good and useful info in the kast half.
WSJ Completely Boring Guidebook.......2007-09-08
I hoped for a stronger content from the authors of The Wall Street Journal, but you can throw this one onto the heap of self help books that get bogged down by inane stories of lucky people. If I were the editor, I could have paired this book down to about 25 pages by just cutting out the fluff. Perhaps the folks at WSJ need to go back to journalism school to remind themselves of how to simplify the content.
Once I finally dug out the "golden nuggets" of wisdom, I was left with the feeling that I have heard it all before. Nothing earth shattering happening here. Nothing you could not discover free by heading over to the hundreds of web sites that deal with money and planning.
All in all, if you want to spend three hours reading about people doing things greater and more profitable than you, this is the book for you.
Generic and Useless.......2007-08-12
I expected this book to be generic and useless, as all books I have read that are produced by the MEDIA. However, I wanted to see if I would be wrong. Unfortunately, I was not. There is no expertise in this book. In fact, it appears as a rehash of material available online.
The book merely wants to leverage the power of the Wall Street Journal name to promote sales, while adding very little value in the actual book - a typical marketing tactic. Only if you are clueless about investments wil this book help you. But if you ARE clueless then you really shouldn't get involved with investing anyway.
Retirement planning in modern America requires a sophisticated understanding of risk; something that is difficult to achieve for even those who are financial professionals. It is even much more difficult to achieve if you listen to what Wall Street, the Fed and government report since they all have their own motivations.
The best book for current and future retirees to understand how to position their investments and how to understand the risks ahead is "America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression." This is hands down the most insightful and well-researched investment book I have ever read. The author is a former Wall Street hot-shot and he tells it like it is. This is THE BOOK to get if you ave any investments in the market. America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression The book shows you how te pension, health care, Social Security, credit and real estate crises will alter investment risk. It provides an excellent analysis and guide for investing over the next several years. America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression
Good Retirement Planning Overview.......2007-08-09
Not an instant solution to getting organized for retirement, but the book appears to have covered all bases leading up to and living through one's retirement years. This book is probably just the beginning step for retirement planning but definitely a useful reference.

In two easy-to-understand sections, Terri Cullen, The Wall Street Journal’s expert on identity theft, first walks you through the most common types of identity theft and how to arm yourself against them, and then leads victims step-by-step through the process of reclaiming a stolen identity. The average victim loses more than $6,000 and spends approximately 600 hours negotiating the complex bureaucracies and paperwork—this book will help save time and effort by laying out the process. And by following the advice in the first half, you may never need the second!
You’ll learn:
• how to avoid the most common scams, from “phishing” to “dumpster diving”
• why children under eighteen are the fastest-growing target, and how you can protect your family
• why your credit report is the single most important document for protecting your identity
• how to use the sample letters, forms, and other useful tools inside for recovering from identity theft
In today’s marketplace, your two most valuable assets are your credit and your identity. No one should be without this vital guide to protecting them.

Valuable resource.......2007-09-06
A thorough, easy-to-read depiction of how identities are stolen, how you can protect yourself, and what to do if your efforts fail. Significantly, the book points out that identity theft often is an inside job; i.e., it isn't a hacker in Russia, it is one of your nearest and dearest (?).
THE Best Identity Theft Book Available.......2007-08-13

I have read several identity theft books, and this book from the Wall Street Journal is by far the best. For starters, it is short, containing JUST the information you need to know. The first half of the book is about how to prevent identity theft. The second half of the book is about how to recover from identity theft. It is so helpful for me to have everything I need to know collected succinctly all in one place.
The book covers things you can do to prevent identity theft and exactly how the latest scams are perpetrated so that you can be aware (including utility theft, employment identity theft, medical identity theft, and home equity theft). It covers understanding your credit report, including credit monitoring tools and other credit tools (including the differences between a credit alert and a credit freeze, something I had been confused about); the book identifies your credit report as the single most important document for protecting your identity. There are many examples of credit reports and how to interpret them. There is also information about identity theft and technology, made understandable for pretty much anyone.
The second half of the book includes resources for identity theft recovery---numbers to call, sample letters, sample logs, laws, and more. Hopefully, by reading and implementing the first half of the book you will never need the second half of the book. Nothing is ever totally foolproof against identity theft, of course, but there are so many basic things you can do to minimize your risk of becoming a victim.
Despite including all of this information, the book can be read by anyone in 4-5 hours. In my opinion, this is information everyone should be aware of. Law enforcement is overburdened and cannot be relied upon to protection; each person has to take personal responsibility to protect themselves, and this book is all you need to do so. You'll have work to do after reading the book, of course, but it will be worth it. Save you money, and if you want to just buy one book, make it this one.
Highly recommended.
