Film noir is a uniquely American genre that has stylistic links to the German expressionist cinema of the 1920s and thematic links to the hard-boiled crime fiction that emerged in the 1930s. Generally the milieu is urban and middle class, and the overall feel is one of repression and fatalism. Whether shot in black and white or color, the style reinforces the overall feel. Films, directors, actors, producers, screenwriters, art directors, themes, plot devices and many other elements are contained in this encyclopedic reference work. Each movie entry includes full filmographic data (studio, running time, production and cast credits, and plot synopsis) along with an analysis of its place in the genre. Biographical entries focus on the persons role in noir and provide a complete filmography of their film noir work. Terms are placed in the context of the genre and relevant examples from films are given.

This costly reference book, which aims at exhaustiveness, is severely compromised by errors and omissions. Quite obviously a labor of love, it desperately needed the services of a fact-checker or ruthless proofreader. As published, it fails to achieve the authoritativeness it craves. For example: TWICE Audrey Totter in The Lady in The Lake is misidentified as Claire Trevor -- this in picture captions! Neither Joan Crawford's nomination for nor winning of the 1945 Oscar for best actress as Mildred Pierce is mentioned in the entry on Academy Awards for films noirs. An entry on Lloyd Noland includes a critique of a role in Brute Force, in which he did not appear; the part was played by Hume Cronyn. Geoffrey Homes is given as the pseudonym not of screenwriter Daniel Mainwaring but of cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca. And so on. In general, the author works from a limited noir filmography, omitting many relevant works (Desert Fury, to name only one). Steven's value judgements are often of interest, though his critical vocabulary seems limited (performances are often described merely as "good" or "very good."). The work retains value as a compendium of information about the film noir cycle in encyclopedic form, and is strong on neglected members of the team such as art directors and composers. Unfortunately, it's far from complete and very far from trustworthy.

A wealth of knowledge for those involved in the duet genre.......2002-12-07
Hundreds of composers and what seems to be over a thousand works, most of them obscure. It is a wonderful little handbook which, whenever possible, states also the duration of pieces, publisher, style, difficulty, and any other information you may need to locate the score. There are some major works missing from it, for example George Crumb's Celestial Mechanics, Yvar Mikhashof's arrangement of Conlon Nancarrow's Sonatina, Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole or Lucien Garban's arrangement of his La Valse, Stravinsky's Petroushka or The Rite of Spring (both composed first for this medium and later orchestrated by the composer), John Corigliano's Gazebo Dances. And these are the ones I am aware of, who knows how many others have been overlooked. Nevertheless you have 312 solid pages of works for one piano four hands (not two pianos!) from A-Z. A must for any duo pianist out there.

Fun songs to play.......2006-03-09
We love Jamaican Farewell in this book, some of my students play it on the vibes while I play it on piano. The duets are easier than the ones in Piano Duets, and this book is a good partner to that one. (I bought both).
34 easy-but-fun duets - 4 hands 1 piano.......2001-08-01
These pieces are mostly quite easy to play, and so are suited to beginners, beginners at dueting, or people who just want some fun things to play with a friend that won't need too much work to get going.
The pieces are quite short, only a couple are longer than a page, and cover a big range of styles - themes from classics, folk songs and jazz. Also, Agay has made the bars line up for the Primo and Secondo parts (doesn't seem like much until you play a duet without that and have to write the bar numbers on each part).
Tunes include: Oh Come All Ye Faithful, The Harmonious Blacksmith, All The Pretty Little Horses, The Trout, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Fasination, and themes from classics and operas.

Good book for late elementary and up.......2006-03-09
I am a piano teacher and my students and I have had fun with this book, the arrangements and variety of music and ability level are really nice. This is not a book for beginners, best for players who have had at least a year of lessons, as most of the duets are higher than level 2.
Learning to play duets!.......2005-07-02
I have been really enjoying this book with my teacher. Some of the music is a little hard for me at this time but will be great fun as I learn to control the keyboard a little more.

Only an Introduction to the Subject.......2005-02-26
If you know nothing about taxes on gambling this is probably a solid introduction to the subjects of record keeping and the potential impact of alternate minimum tax.
If you are a "professional gambler" there should be very little here that you don't know. There is a brief discussion of the pros and cons of professional versus recreational. Also, in passing it mentions that you file a Schedule C and that to establish as a business you need to meet standard IRS requirements, but there is no sample Schedule C here despite at least three examples of Form 1040 for recreational gamblers.
About half of the book is either "filler" or "reference" from other sources.

In today's business environment, changes come in staggering succession: mergers, acquisitions, rightsizing, downsizing, restructuring. As accountants, lawyers and executives scrutinize these changes for bottom-line impact, they pay little attention to how change will affect an organization's culture or how its culture will affect change. The Accurate Picture.......2001-10-01
Having endured three acquisitions with one company, two down-sizings with another, being subjected to two subsequent layoffs with two companies, and forming my own consulting business, I found "Getting Your Shift Together" a very accurate outline of what is missed during critical times of change. It is refreshing in that it clearly identifies not only what is overlooked but also why we so often ignore what is squarely in front of us. While the book is actually a quick read, I read it slowly (some text repeatedly), often finding myself pondering its insightful truths. Getting an accurate picture of an organization's culture is critical to its longevity. Reading this book should be anyone's first step in gaining such a focus. The book gives the reader pause as it clearly shows how and why we hide from the truths that surround us. I reflected back to the line in "A Few Good Men" when Jack Nicholson says to Tom Cruise, "You can't handle the truth!" While truth may be hard to handle, in business we can't survive the lies and denial! Honesty rings through this book, moving the reader to examine his/her own world. What are the reigning values? Where is the trust? What's next? Take the Culture Health IndexTM and find out what your organization's culture really looks like. Be advised - this is not for the faint of heart, but it's also for anyone who still harbors any hope for surviving an upcoming change (and emerging as a leader) in his or her organization. "Getting Your Shift Together" is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.

The writers (Lizz & PJ of EMERGE) have taken an unknown, amorphous concept and developed it into the leading organizational management tool and process, Cultural Due Diligence (tm). This book explains the Cultural Due Diligence (tm) process, its importance to all business organizations and its implementation and review. Lizz & PJ of EMERGE are well-known for their seminars on Cultural Due Diligence(tm) and the book is a wonderful desk reference. It has also been picked up by several universities as required reading in business curriculum.
Makes you think -- worth a read.......2000-05-18
My favorite part is the point that when change initiatives fail, things never go back to the way they were before. This book makes you think about your blind spots, and how to not let them get in the way of making change work. The authors come off credible, with a "in the trenches" perspective. A good reality check.
Getting Your Shift Together.......2000-04-16
This book contains a great analysis of American business today. In an everchanging and fastpaced work environment focused on the bottom line, Pellett and Bouchard suggest that it is an organization's culture which will have the biggest impact to profitability and success. In a well written and easy style their narrative captured my attention with real-life anecdotes and solutions to business problems and challenges. Their cultural due diligence model is one that should be embraced by all companies wanting to improve productivity, quality, customer satisfaction and profits. Read it and give it to every CEO, Board Member and VP you know!
