Book Description

Elvis Presley musicals, beach romps, biker flicks, and alienated youth movies were some of the most popular types of drive-in films during the sixties. The actresses interviewed for this book (including Celeste Yarnall, Lana Wood, Linda Harrison, Pamela Tiffin, Deanna Lund, Diane McBain, Judy Pace, and Chris Noel) all made their mark in these genres. These fantastic femmes could be found either twisting on the shores of Malibu, careening down the highway on a chopper, being serenaded by Elvis, or taking on the establishment as hip coeds. As cult figures, they contributed greatly to that period of filmmaking aimed at the teenage audience who frequented the drive-ins of America. They frolicked, screamed, and danced their way into B-movie history in such diverse films as Eve, Teenage Millionaire, The Girls on the Beach, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, Three in the Attic, Wild in the Streets, and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.

This book is a celebration of the actresses' careers. They have for the most part been overlooked in other publications documenting the history of film. Fantasy Femmes addresses their film and television careers, focusing on their view of the above genres, their candid comments and anecdotes about their films, the people they worked with, and their feelings in general regarding their lives and the choices they made. The book is well illuminated and contains a complete list of film and television credits.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Interviews With Underappreciated Actresses.......2004-04-16

Fantasy Femmes interviews 20 lovely actresses who starred primarily in B-Films in the '60s. The main genres - as stated in the sub-title are Biker, Beach, and Elvis films (particulary the latter - most of these gals made at least one movie with the King) as well as Alienated Youth and Horror films. The author Tom Lisanti knows these genres well and his affection for the ladies that he interviewed is clearly evident.

Among my personal favorite '60s superchicks that Lisanti profiled are Deanna Lund (from tv's Land Of The Giants), Irene Tsu (the native girl who duets with Frankie Avalon in How To Stuff A Wild Bikini), and Salli Sachse (a staple of the Frankie & Annette beach movies, she was "the girl with her hair in a bun"). My only complaint is that Lisanti did not interview my very favorite '60s sweetie Mary Hughes, the Bardot-look alike who joined Sachse in the background of the Beach Party films (Hughes was the girlfriend of guitarist Jeff Beck and the subject of the Yardbirds' song "Psycho Daisies"). My main woman Mary does appear in a photo in the Sally Sachse chapter though and you can read more about her in one of Lisanti's other great books, Drive In Dream Girls: A Galaxy Of B-Movie Starlets Of The Sixties. It profiles 50 superbabes of the '60s, none to the extent covered here.

The other 17 lovely ladies profiled in this book are:
Joan O'Brien (Operation Petticoat, It Happened At The World's Fair); Diane McBain (Spin Out, The Mini Skirt Mob); Joan Staley (Roustabout, The Ghost & Mrs. Chicken); Jill Haworth (It!, Haunted House Of Horror); Pamela Tiffin (For Those Who Think Young, The Pleasure Seekers); Francine York (Tickle Me, Curse Of The Swamp Creature), Joy Harmon (Young Dillinger, Village Of The Giants); Eileen O'Neill (A Man Called Dagger); Julie Parrish (Winter A Go-Go, Paradise Hawaiian Style); Jean Hale (The Oscar, St. Valentine's Day Massacre); Chris Noel (Get Yourself A College Girl, Girl Happy); Lana Wood (Girls On The Beach, Diamonds Are Forever); Celeste Yarnall (Eve, Live A Little Love A Little); Judy Pace (Three In The Attic, Brian's Song - as Gale Sayers' wife); Karen Jensen (Out Of Sight, tv's Bracken's World); Linda Harrison (Planet Of The Apes, Bracken's World); Tisha Sterling (Village Of The Giants, Norwood).

Most of these ladies were finished in the business by the age of 30. Society at the time dictated that they marry and have kids, and having a family back then usually meant the end of a woman's career. Too bad for us, as most of these ladies had a lot more to offer the big screen than beauty (fortunately, their luminous performances in these often cheesy movies will live forever). For anyone who is a big fan - like I was - of a few of the ladies interviewed here, I suggest you get this book right away. You'll find yourself becoming an admirer of all of them by the time you finish reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Femmes!.......2001-08-25

All your faves are covered...and maybe a few you forgot about! This book is campy and fun, but also quite informative for movie buffs and anyone old enough to remember the babe-a-licious actresses of the 60's. Would also make a great gift!

    Book Description

In this innovatory new book the celebrated writer on the blues, Paul Oliver, rediscovers the wealth of neglected vocal traditions issued on Race records. When blues first reached a large audience it was through the 'Race records' issued specifically for black purchasers in the 1920s. Blues as performed on the professional stage and, later, folk blues from the South have been extensively discussed by many writers. Paul Oliver shows that this emphasis has drawn attention away from the other important vocal traditions also available on Race records: the songs of Southern rural dances, the comic and social songs and ballads of the medicine shows and traveling entertainments, and, even more neglected, the sacred vocal traditions, from the song-sermons of the Baptist and Sanctified preachers to the gospel songs of the church congregations and of the 'jack-leg' preachers and street evangelists.

Over 500 artists and 700 song titles are indexed and there is a guide to reissued recordings.

2 out of 5 stars Good Picture Books.......2007-09-13

Many pictures and no substance. I expected more of an encyclopedia than this with more information about history, spreads, theories and hidden meanings. Nothing for professional tarot readers who expect more than pictures.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious Tarot collector.......2007-02-16

Everything you need to know about Tarot. The books are beautifully put together. I couldn't find these in my local bookstore, and if I did, they would have been financially out of reach. Tarot is a life-long study, and these volumns are wonderful companions.

4 out of 5 stars Volume IV somewhat disappointing.......2006-07-03

The fourth volume in the Encyclopedia of Tarot series is mainly a compendium of every tarot deck that was published, revised, or conceived since volume III came out in 1990. It lists published and unpublished decks, Rider-Waite and Tarot de Marseilles-influenced decks, Japanese and tarocchi decks. As an example of research, it is overwhelmingly broad, yet disappointingly superficial. Missing are the supplementary articles that made previous volumes so useful: the origin of the deck, the current locations of all extant Visconti-Sforza cards, information on tax stamps (to aid in identifying older decks), a biography of Pamela Colman-Smith, a list of all known early references to Tarot, and many more than can be listed here. While volumes I through III certainly contained an overwhelming number of decks themselves, the extra material placed the Tarot in a historical and scholarly context. Especially fascinating was the article in volume I listing notable omissions in ancient lists of games, gambling, and fortune-telling where Tarot should have been mentioned had it been in existence at that time.

In place of this fascinating and useful information, the sole supplement in volume IV is a one-page essay "Does the Tarot Work?" That's it. Hasn't any new historical data become available in the past decade and a half? What about a survey of the uses of the Tarot in modern society? Has there been any psychological research into the effect of archetypal images on the human consciousness? One is left with the conclusion that nothing new has come to light, that all the available information has already appeared in the first three volumes; that the only progress in Tarot has been the production of a staggering number of new decks, possibly more than the potential number of buyers.

Of course, this isn't true - there have been an enormous number of books on the Tarot published in the past 15 years. In fact, a trend has emerged where new decks more frequently come with their own detailed softcover book in place of the traditional "little white book." It wouldn't have taken much to at least comment on this.

I can recommend volume IV only to those who require the largest possible catalog of decks. The exhaustiveness of the list can be educational: for example, I had long been puzzled by the imagery on Giorgio Trevisan's "Renaissance" Tarot; volume IV informs me that it was based on the Landsknechts, the 16th century mercenaries. Enlightening if not exactly helpful information.

4 out of 5 stars Much More of the Same.......2007-01-18

I seem to recall seeing somewhere that this (the fourth volume in the series) was originally intended as two volumes; at just over 800 pages, its nearly twice the size of the early volumes. and if you were happy with those, chances are you will be pleased with this latest addition, as they are much of a kind. In works of this sort, if the size is to be manageable at all, the authors have to decide whether to go with breadth of coverage or with depth. Kaplan and company have chosen to go with breadth, and attempt to cover a whopping 800 decks, mostly pictorially. They try to counter the unavoidable superficiality of most of this coverage by doing selected depth coverage of topics such as the Tarot of Marseilles and decks with Egyptian motifs, not to mention an extraordinary 1 page article entitled "Does the Tarot Work?" Although I find myself often wishing there were more detail, (or more color photography), in the last analysis, I think they made the right choice: I wouldn't sacrifice any of the decks covered for additional detail. Hopefully the reception this volume receives will support a Volume 5 without the ten year wait that preceeded this one.

5 out of 5 stars Volume IV - Thousands of Card Images From 850 Unpublished & Published Tarot Decks.......2005-11-16

"Tarotists are as diverse in style, personality, background, and appearance as the characters on the cards themselves. At the same time, we are drawn together by a common interest. We gravitate to each other, in person and on-line: collectors, scholars, art historians, occultists, business people, artists and fortunetellers who read the cards. The pages of the Encyclopedia are a gallery of the people of tarot, living and long-dead, as much as they are a gallery of tarot cards." - From the book

Featuring artwork from 850 tarot decks and reproductions of more than 11,000 different tarot cards from the 20th century, Volume IV is the largest installment of the Encyclopedia of Tarot. From Celtic Revival to Japanese manga, Native American lore to teddy bears, Volume IV explores these themes and much more. In addition, this volume further investigates the Western esoteric tradition of tarot, including Egyptian, Masonic, Kabbalistic, and Christian symbolism, as well as New Age values.

Volume IV incorporates both unpublished and published tarot decks from a vast array of media such as computer graphics, watercolors, engravings, wood, textiles, oil paints and more. Unfortunately, the full-color, glossy pictures of this volume span only eight pages with the rest of the card images depicted in black and white. The artists' personal commentary on the decks is often provided, helping to illuminate interpretation and philosophy of their work.

Some of the fascinating tarot decks displayed in Volume IV include:

    * Tarocchi di Robot (Tarot of the Robot) by Massimo Borreli (1987)
    * Roots of Asia by Amnart Klanpracher (2001)
    * Vertigo Tarot by Dave McKean based on the DC Comics series (1995 and 2001)
    * Magic Story of Misa Tarot by Misa no Mahou Monogatari (1998)
    * Ramses: Tarot of Eternity by Giordano Berti and Severino Baldi (2003)
    * Full Moon Dreams by Lunaea Weatherstone (1998)
    * Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert (2002)
    * Hanslian Tarot by Alois Hanslian (1998)
    * Cosmic Tribe Tarot by Stevee Postman (1998)
    * Stained Glass Tarot by Laurie Amato (1999)
    * PoMo Tarot by Brian Williams (1994)
    * Hudes Tarot by Susan Hudes (1995)
    * Animal-Wise Tarot by Ted Andrews (1999)
    * Maat Tarot by Julia Cuccia-Watts (2002)

Several decks listed under "Unpublished" are now published. For example, Zach Wong's Adflatus deck (2000)-published as Revelations Tarot-is featured in Volume IV as is Amy Erickson's New Millennium Tarot (1999) which is now known as Tarot of the Four Elements (text by Isha Lerner).

Special features in Volume IV of the Encyclopedia of Tarot include:

    * Tarock packs (Tarot decks used only for gaming)
    * Annotated bibliography of more than 1,500 books and articles dating from the 18th century to present
    * The "Ancient Egyptian Temple", a pictorial history of decks based on ancient Egyptian symbolism
    * 100 Japanese decks with many based on popular manga and anime characters
    * Cataloguing of decks by themes (e.g. animals, Celtic, Goth) as well as illustrative technique (e.g. photography, collage, computer graphics)
    * The essay "Does Tarot Work?" by Allen Stairs

At 802 pages, Volume IV of the Encyclopedia of Tarot is a visual feast for Tarot enthusiasts. I found a few typos so far, but these errors don't eclipse the main reason I bought this book: to see Tarot images from hundreds of decks for comparison and pure aesthetic enjoyment. If you're the type of person that loves viewing Tarot cards online, often drooling at what you see, you'll be thrilled at having thousands of images at your fingertips.

5 out of 5 stars An extensive visual and descriptive tour of over 800 mass-market tarot decks.......2005-09-06

The Encyclopedia Of Tarot, Volume IV is an extensive visual and descriptive tour of over 800 mass-market tarot decks, limited editions, antique decks, previously unpublished tarot artwork, and 100 published Japanese tarot decks including some based on anime and manga. Black-and-white photographs of deck cards and extensive detailed history and discussion of the artists, themes, and esoteric traditions of tarot. Volume IV is complete within and of itself, and does not hold any duplicated material with Volumes I, II, and III. An excellent reference for anyone interested in learning more about all aspects of tarot, or searching for images of the ideal tarot deck for one's tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to Hell and Back..........2002-12-12

Words are completely inadequate to describe the horror of the experience described by Mr Mann in this book. That human beings are capable of such cruel acts of senseless violence, that we have not yet evolved past such futile, disempowered expressions of rage and envy numbs the mind. What is truly extraordinary is that rather than be crushed by the calamities which befall him, Mr Mann emerges spiritually transformed and able to embrace the world as a radiant, whole being. Having been honored to work with him briefly, I can attest to the truth of this astonishing triumph. Where most of us might be filled with hate and bitterness, Mr Mann remains generous and deeply engaged in the welfare of the world around him. His story is miraculous, but the true wonder is that as we read, we come to know this potential within ourselves. A harrowing, inspiring and deeply moving book.

4 out of 5 stars A moving look into one man's spiritual journey.......1999-10-18

This book is part diary, part commentary on the author's spiritual journey. The conditions of the Turkish prison forced him to come to terms with himself, his beliefs, his fellow human beings. He saw terrible things and endured some terrible situations, but he got through it all with his humanity and spirit intact, one might even say improved.

For those who like to have a story behind their spirituality, you will not be disappointed. The author details what was happening around him at each stage of his spiritual awakening. He doesn't hold anything back, you get a very intimate look at his life.

I recommend this book to anyone who's looking to make peace with their shadow self, or who thinks their life is too awful to go on. The author's journey can give you inspiration and hope.

3 out of 5 stars tremendously insightful and powerfully articulated.......1998-10-31

Nick Mann is the master at exposing the dark forces of the underworld/humanity. His vivid description and direct knowledge demonstrate his luminous understanding in the realm of magic.

            Book Description

The definitive, behind-the-scenes story of the most innovative airline in America

A few years ago, an unknown entrepreneur named David Neeleman uprooted his wife and nine kids from Utah to New York, dreaming of a bold new company that would make jaded travelers fall in love with flying again. Barbara S. Peterson has been reporting on JetBlue since the “Jet who?” days when few outsiders believed in the company. Drawing on exclusive interviews with more than seventy-five insiders, from mechanics on the tarmac to the CEO, she weaves together a dynamic story of how JetBlue has blended outstanding customer service, inspirational leadership, savvy marketing, and disciplined financial management to come out on top.

“It's fun to read about simple ideas that change the way we do things . . . and it's always fun to watch the whoosh of good ideas hit the brick walls of habit and bureaucracy. . . .The smart, fast, little guy wins!”
            —Los Angeles Times

“A quick, breezy read studded with mini-profiles, snippets of aviation history and amusing anecdotes.”
            —The Wall Street Journal

“An engaging peek into the open cockpits of the airline industry, its foibles and pitfalls, written by someone who knows the industry, yet still loves to fly. This book is the chronicle of one little airline that could.”
            —Book Page

“Peterson moves beyond personalities to detail how Neeleman crafted more of a branded travel experience than an airline.”

“[Peterson] gets the inside scoop on JetBlue's quirky corporate culture and Neeleman's fresh approach to an antiquated business model.”

            5 out of 5 stars Book on Setting-Up a Successful Airline.......2007-08-28

David Neelman has been very clever at the way he structured Jet Blue.He essentially bought new aircraft, hired good people, treated them welland they looked after the passengers. It would be nice to see a low-cost airline in Europe follow this model. Go was very close but they no longer exist.

Great read for anyone in the airline business,an example to follow!

            4 out of 5 stars Jet Blue.......2007-06-26

This is a worthwhile read for businessmen and is inspiration for students of business. The first half is a quick read and it is hard to put away till the finish.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but ..........2007-02-26

...there are other books about startup companies (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, et al) that are better. The Jet Blue debacle at JFK recently led me to research Jet Blue. I knew little about the company, as it doesn't fly where I currently live. I read that there were two books written on the founder, and this is the only one I could get through the library fairly quickly.

It was interesting about the founder's early professional life and how he started Morris Air and other small travel related companies. He sold Morris Air to Southwest Airlines. He got himself an executive position as part of the deal but last only 4-5 months, as he was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. He had many innovative ideas, such as his reservationists work out of the homes, but cut down his company costs and created some very loyal employees. The story on how his company came up with the name "Jet Blue" is quite interesting. The history about JFK is very interesting too. I flew into JFK once(1991)and was not very impressed with it, and vowed never to fly into it again.

4 out of 5 stars A good start to understanding Jet Blue.......2006-12-17

As someone who reads widely on the airline industry this book was really quite interesting. This new airline bent the rules in a time when the majors were cutting back and developed a winning formula for success. Peterson does an excellent job talking about the early day of the airline and sets the reader up to be curious about how it will do in the future. She had great access to all of the relevant players. If you are curious about how the airline industry has changed and what they need to do to get back this is a great place to start.

4 out of 5 stars David Neelman and Jet Blue Airways.......2006-10-28

This book was a very good read. It explains how David Neelman started Jet Blue. It also talks about all the ups and dows of getting the company off the ground. It was very informative and some of the facts about other airlines may surprise you.If you are flying Jet Blue soon or are a frequent flyer of Jet Blue, this book is good for you.
