This book is by a well-intentioned but underinformed fan? Supposedly the Brits are huge fans of Doris--this one didn't do his homework. One of the photos (of a lady standing up in a car on the MGM lot) is attributed to be Doris but is a photo of June Allyson!!! That kind of schlock-ily written and edited book does a disservice to the lovely actress/singer.

I expected thin - the book is thin - but emaciated? The author himself says the book was proposed as a picture book and yet the book is thin on illustrations and thin on biographical info, and flat writing for such a iconic woman. What accompanying "biographical" info there is, is really only cursory and focuses more on her singing than her acting. (one more mention of che sera sera and I'll go nuts -- and isn't it spelled "que sera sera"??). "Illustrated biography" is hardly a fitting title. The book would have been more aptly marketed as a book superficially chronicling Doris Day's singing credits. The only insightful editorializing the authors puts forth are quotes from Doris's autobiography.

THE ONLY REASON I GAVE THIS BOOK ONE STAR IS FOR THE PHOTOS, ALTHOUGH ONE PHOTO, SUPPOSEDLY OF DORIS, IN ACTUALITY IS JUNE ALLYSON! UNFORGIVABLE! THE AUTHOR OBVIOUSLY DID NOT DO HIS HOMEWORK. HE PAINTS A TOTALLY MISLEADING PORTRAYAL OF DORIS DAY. IF YOU WANT TO READ A GOOD, DEPENDABLE BIO OF DORIS, CHECK OUT HER 1975 BIOGRAPHY, ENTITLED "DORIS DAY, HER OWN STORY," BY A. E. If you are looking for an analysis of the expositions and episodes of the fugues in the Well-Tempered Clavier, this book is not for you.
If you are looking for an analysis of the harmonic progression in the preludes, this book is not for you.
If you are looking for debate on which tempi to choose, this book is not for you.
In fact, it is hard to say who this book IS for!
The book consists mostly of philosophical discourse on melody, rhythm, and harmony. The author uses only a few examples from the WTC. I would summarize that philosophical discourse for you, but it was lost on me.
Ralph Kirkpatrick was a well-known harpsichordist, and was especially renowned for his catalogue of the works of Domenico Scarlatti. This book was published at the end of his life. He had apparently lost most of his mental faculties by that time, and the book was probably accepted for publication only because of his name. It is unfortunate that Kirkpatrick did not write such a book in his younger years.

I had looked for this exact item for some time. I was glad to find it. Nice package with two discs and both parts. At least one piece was in a key different than I am used to, otherwise very nice.
A practice product that works.......2007-01-05
While basically lifeless renditions, this is a great practice product. For my students I fed it into a looping machine and reduced the tempo without changing pitch. Well worth the effort. Good for the money.

Through a musical language involving symbols, numbers, and tonality, J.S. Bach created emotional dimension in the preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier. This book explores the use of that musical language, revealing how Bach used harmonic design and melodic and rhythmic motivic formulas to adhere to the basic doctrine of the Theory of Affects—i.e., that one mood will govern one piece. The book examines the significance of key and the emotional dimension Bach discerned in each tonality; the symbolism of melodic and rhythmic motifs; and the symbolism of numbers. It considers the thematic and rhythmic links between a prelude and its companion fugue in each book, and between a prelude and fugue in Book One and those in the same key in Book Two. It also includes reference to other instrumental works by Bach in the same key and melodic patterns.

Just keeps giving.......2007-07-12
This is a book that just keeps giving. I bought it quite a while ago and really did not read it right away --- but ultimately I read the whole thing -- and I must admit I found myself appearing again and again in the descriptions.
But what really is great about this book is that if you just leave it on the coffee table or something like that, then you will find yourself picking it up and randomly looking at a chapter here and a chapter there -- and guess what -- it will all be relevant (if you are being honest with yourself). You will find yourself, your peers, coworkers, and your life.
Worth having.
Surprisingly helpful from an accidental reader.......2007-05-20
My wife bought the book and I was sceptical when I first saw it. I accidentally left it on a low table and our puppy picked it up and shredded most of the first chapter. I bought another copy from Amazon to replace the damaged copy. As I tried to repair the torn pages a few words caught my attention and after that I could not put it down. Take it from an initial sceptic that this book has very helpful suggestions and practical advice that you can readily apply. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is working.

This book was assigned reading for a "Leadership" in business class. The first two chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. Read those, and the rest will be just variations on the same theme. I now use the book as a doorstop.
Smart Advice.......2007-05-12
As a veteran of the corporate world, I found the case studies and recommended solutions to common workplace snafus right on target. Best of all, the authors urge individuals to find out their options and own their decisions. In other words, no need to be the victim of an unhealthly work relationship. Hope is out there for those who can take a step back and not get tangled up in other person's bad behavior!
Disappointed.......2007-04-13
With all the glowing reviews, I thought this book would have something new and innovative, something I hadn't heard before. No such luck. Some interesting strategies and tactics for dealing with difficult people and see how you might be contributing to the problem, but nothing you won't find in other books on the subject.
I eventually gave up before finishing the CD because of the lack of anything new and I got tired of listen to the authors :-(
