Book Description

Creator of the mono-maniacal Wile E. Coyote and his elusive prey, the Road Runner, Chuck Jones has won three Academy Awards and been responsible for many classics of animation featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Elmer Fudd. Who better to do Chuck Jones than Hugh Kenner, master wordsmith and technophile, a man especially qualified to illuminate the form of literacy that Jones so wonderfully executes in the art of character animation?
A Flurry of Drawings reveals in cartoon-like sequences the irrepressible humor and profound reflection that have shaped Chuck Jones's work. Unlike Walt Disney, Jones and his fellow animators at Warner Brothers were not interested in cartoons that mimicked reality. They pursued instead the reality of the imagination, the Toon world where believability is more important than realism and movement is the ultimate aesthetic arbiter. Kenner offers both a fascinating explanation of cartoon culture and a new understanding of art's relationship to technology, criticism, freedom, and imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Up With Jones.......2005-03-15

It might seem unusual that the literary critic who earned a reputation revealing the depths of Pound, Eliot, and Joyce would devote a book extolling the virtues of a master of Character Animation.

But the critical impulse is surprisingly effective here. Principles of art are defined so infrequently that few of us know art when we see it; often we are left with the nagging feeling that we want nothing to do with it. One principle, according to Goethe, is that art consists of limitation, not liberation. Jones told a story in 400 seconds with a precision that came down to the blink of an eye. The pressures of work and money enabled rather than hindered Jones and his crew at Warner Brothers to create what are now considered classics of the genre: What's Opera Doc (which introduced millions of children to Wagner's Ring Cycle); One Froggy Evening, (which Spielberg called the Citizen Kane of animation); Duck! Rabbit! Duck! ("Shoot him now!"), and later Jones works which reveal equally memorable moments of imagination and craftsmanship, such as the balancing sled in How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the entry and exits of the mongoose in Rikki Tikki Tavi. Every work of art, wrote Conrad, ought to carry its justification in every line, and this is true of Jones's work as well as Kenner's: There is no wasted space, every item is telling. Just as the short novel fit Conrad, Jones's preferred form was the six-minute short, within which he employed frequent, comic use of fade to black. Make the point and move on.

Conrad wrote that art deals with what is essential and fundamental. Daffy is pure id; Bugs, in typical American fashion, fights back only when provoked. Far from being violent, Jones' works have moral content. Characters get what is coming to them. Fanaticism such as Wile E. Coyote's always fails. Character animation means, in part, that characters reveal themselves in action, a fitting notion for a country short on philosophers but long on inventors. And of course there is the ubiquitous Acme company with its unreliable products. The reality of the essential is different from the near photorealistic "illusion of life" that Disney tried to accomplish. Under the direction of Jones, figures are humanesque: Porky is a man who happens to look like a pig; Bugs is a rabbit who walks upright and speaks with a Brooklyn accent; Sylvester the cat has a nose like a basset hound, while Tweety has baloonlike feet. Yet these figures are more real to us, more believable, than any of Disney's blemish-free princesses or low self-esteem dragons. If anyone is to blame for preparing us for an ideal world that does not exist, it certainly wasn't Jones, whose humanlike creations are painfully recognizable.

Something else art does is endure. Suffice it to say that Jones has entered the American vernacular. Jones's work is enormously popular sixty years after its creation and far ahead of anything being done today with or without the aid of computers.

This is a slim book full of pleasant surprises in which Kenner gives us new eyes with which to appreciate the legacy of Chuck Jones.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of paper.......1999-09-09

This book has absolutely nothing new to say about Chuck Jones. In fact it doesnt say much at all; just endless amounts of prose that add up to nothing. Rather than doing any reserach on his own, Kenner just takes his historical information from already published books on animation or from interviews he has done with Jones. The problems with interviewing Jones, however, is that he can be pretty self serving at times. So dont expect getting any real insight into Mike Maltese and Maurice Noble's contributions to his films, and certainly not any comparision to the work of Bob Clampett, who Chuck Jones hates with his guts. (They had a lifelong feud) For real insight into the work of Chuck Jones, try the articles written by Richard Thompson in Film Comment in the seventies, or Michael Barrier's book Hollywood Cartoons

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Biography of America's Greatest Animator.......1996-08-28

Professor Kenner turns his pen toward a study of the creator of The Roadunner and the Coyote, and of Bugs Bunny in this wonderful little monograph. Writing with wit and verve he traces Jones' career from the beginning to the present, touching on the high and low but always bringing us the essence of a true comic genius.

Imgeorg's "review" should be deleted. It's not Amazon.com's fault that Imgeorg didn't read the product description. This product is one of Newmarket Press's wonderful series of Pictorial Moviebooks all of which provide beautifully illustrated background to the film in question & most of which (like this one) also provide a complete shooting script. All of these books enhance the viewing experience (in theaters &/or on DVD) but are certainly not intended to replace it.

This is not a DVD; this is a paperback book about the movie. Shame on you, Amazon, for trying to fool the public! I'll review the real thing when it finally comes out.

5 out of 5 stars A Nun and the Genius.......2000-04-06

Yvonne Fern a former Nun, spent months with Gene and his wife Majel whom the book is dedicated to. I am not a Trekie and originally bought the book for my son who is a major Star Trek fan. But I opened the book and read a few pages, then a few more pages. Then within days I was 3/4 thru the book and had gained such respect for the man Gene Roddenberry and realized he was much more than the man behind Star Trek. On page 2 I see my Father speaking, thru MsFern/Mr Roddenberry: "Gene Roddenberry did not believe in time. He never spoke of the future in the future tense, to me. It was always, "the future is", not "the future will be".

The book is wonderful because it also covers the marriage he had, and the uniqueness of his personaility. On page 95 Ms Fern notes: "Like many writers he carries a population sround inside of him-ideas, fancies, noions, characters, theories, possibilities, dreams. They buzz constantly with opposing suggestions, contraditory philosphies, conflicting needs. They make demands on him that they begiven life." This is why he was a genius. An eccentric of sorts. So many people live "safe" lives. People like Mr Roddenberry take risks and lead the lives they are meant to live. Interetsing that people admire men/women like him, yet how few people are have that spirit of adventure. Mr Roddenberry didn't see race, religion, gender, but LIFE in its fullest form. The book covers his feelings on these subjects as well as sex.

This book is a modern day Homer. Everyone should buy it ! I bought copies for my local library.

Even if you don't agree with the editors that screenwriting is the toughest and riskiest profession in the movie business, this lovely book holds tremendous appeal. Screenwriters offers unique visual and verbal portraits of each of the 47 writers covered. The striking photographs presented here were exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The book also offers brief comments from the screenwriters on the art of writing, particularly for the silver screen.

Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplays for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Affliction, claims, "Everybody wants to talk. It's like a compulsion." Nora Ephron, who scripted You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally..., compares writing for the screen to "delivering a great big beautiful plain pizza, then the director sees it and wants to add mushrooms, and others want to add green peppers and anchovies, until you have a pizza with everything and you think, 'Why didn't I lie down in traffic to prevent anyone's putting green peppers onto the pizza?'" Novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, from whose pen flowed the Merchant-Ivory adaptations of Howards End, The Remains of the Day, and A Room with a View, maintains: "Whether I'm writing films or fiction, I feel I'm always the same writer with the same concerns--about making a story move; about establishing interesting characters and developing the relationship between them."

Reading this book, one realizes how little most of us know about screenwriters. Considering the media attention lavished upon actors and actresses, it is refreshing and revealing to hear from the people who craft the words uttered onscreen. Although we may have listened to screenwriters' words without recognizing their authors, this book gives us the chance to pay attention to their voices. --Raphael Shargel

I love this book. Initially, when I first bought it, it was for the photography, which is outstanding. But as I would leaf through it, again and again I was struck by the poetic and thoughtful writing. It's become something of an inspiration for me now as I work to remain creative with my own artistic endeavors.

All artists, especially struggling and neophyte screenwriters, owe it to themselves to check out this beautiful work. Another reviewer put it well; it's about time writers got their due.

It's about time writers receive their 15 minutes of fame. This book has given me the inspiration to start writing again after a long break. Lumme and Manninen capture the screenwriters like no one ever has. I can't wait to see what story their next book brings to life.

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational exploration.......1999-11-19

Because writers are behind the scenes -- way behind the scenes -- we can only guess what they are trying to tell us with each new screenplay. That's why I loved seeing their faces and hearing their words -- listening to some of them go on and on about their craft and others sum up their reactions to years of hard work in 10 or 20 well-chosen words. I didn't need this book when I bought it -- or at least I didn't think so. Now I turn back to it time and again for inspiration. I don't feel as if I've been talked down to, rather that I got a glimpse deep into the writers' souls.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring study of the writerýs craft.......1999-09-17

This is a book for writers. Sure, it's full of pictures, but mostly it's about the pursuit of story. Everybody thinks actors and directors make movies, but it's the writer who creates the characters, dreams up the story, makes us care what happens. These are some of the world's greatest writers and they are incredibly candid here. It's funny to me that every magazine interviews novelists, but who interviews screenwriters other than Variety and, now, these guys? Screenwriters must be the most invisible, hardworking artists on the planet. Lumme and Manninen offer a very unusual glimpse, literally and figuratively, of the idea makers of Hollywood. Manninen achieved the impossible, finding compelling ways to photograph people who must spend 99% of their lives staring at a computer. The common trait in all the portraits is the writer's twinkle in the eye. There's an idea banging around in that head, maybe a couple. I found this a very refreshing take on the creative process. It is puzzling that Screenwriters is apparently the first such book. Personally, I'd like to hear more from the people who are pretty much the acknowledged masters of modern storytelling. Bonus: In addition to a bunch of funny and interesting anecdotes, there are a good many real writing tips divulged. I felt genuinely inspired by this book, and I don't even have an idea for a screenplay. Maybe I'll get one now. Two thumbs way up.

          ¡Excellent book!
I recommend it for every one who's interested in western music from Bach to our days. This is a very deep analysis of western music and also of western philosophy of music, writen with elegance and in a very intelligent way. For musicians, there are musical exemples, and for those who are not, this doesn't represent any problem.
You'll not regret if you read it.

I can not understand the good reviews or the appraisal on the book cover. The book is very boring, repetitive, and too metaphoric, in the sense that it writes about actual lions and actual lion tamers. I can not say that I learned anything new, and the book could be easily compressed into 50 pages. Don't waste your time!

          5 out of 5 stars Artfully done!.......2006-07-10

It's not difficult to imagine yourself as a lion tamer, equipped with the traditional whip and chair, matching wits with lions like leaders, bosses, and customers. You have to keep your wits about you in your relationships with these cats. It's a lot like real-life lion taming. And yes, the consequences of angering a lion in business can be comparatively just as devastating as angering a lion in the circus cage.

OK, cute analogy. It shouldn't be that difficult to draw a few analogies and crank out a clever book. Perhaps, but Steven Katz went further...much further. It's obvious as you turn page after tempting page that this author did his homework. The lion tamers he consulted and learned from are named in the acknowledgements, and their influence is felt throughout the book. Whether the topic is the big cats with four feet or two, the lessons are plentiful, clear, and appropriate. The transition back and forth between lions and humans is smooth and natural. Learning Katz's lessons is comfortable, not forced.

We're surrounded by lions. "Being a lion is not a specific position, it is a state of being." It's essential to understand that lions have four senses beyond sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell: dominance, territory, survival, and social standing. You'll gain a deep appreciation of these elements in the three sections of this fast-moving paperback: Lions are Never Tame, The Art of Lion Taming, and Lion Taming is Really Lion Teaming. You can see the flow just from those section titles.

The book is filled with lessons that apply the fundamentals of lion taming to leadership, management, and other relationships. Conveniently, the lessons are all listed at the end of the book to pull it all together. Well worth the time to curl up with this book cover-to-cover.

5 out of 5 stars How to Speak Truth to Power.......2006-04-18

LIONTAMING is an entertaining "users manual" for igniting leadership at all levels of an organization. Through the lens of an analogy as powerful as Aslan in Narnia, author Steve Katz boldly takes you on a journey into the workplace as a lions den. Unlike Dilbert's facetious approach to Catbert, Dogbert and other "manajerks", Steve ratchets the risk up a notch and deals with the ferocious realities of the King of the Jungle himself. Drawing on years of experience with leaders at the highest levels of government, Steve explores the role of office staff way beyond merely managing their managers or following their leaders by bringing fresh insights into workplace survival tactics. After Steve's presentation at American University's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation, I promptly bought his book and featured him at both an Interagency Regulatory Forum and the US-EPAs Transformational Leadership Conversations series. If you enjoy reading LIONTAMING, you'll be amazed at how it can come alive in a discussion.

5 out of 5 stars "Lion Taming" Delivers Real Value.......2005-09-19

Steve Katz's "Lion Taming" fills a real void in the literature on management, which focuses primarily on leadership, strategy, and implementation of change. His focus is on the close, personal advisors to powerful decision makers within corporations, government, and nonprofit entities. His purpose is to identify the principles by which such key staffers can increase their effectiveness while retaining their integrity. His analogies to "lion taming" are not a stretch. As I read Steve Katz's book, I relived whole episodes in my own career and suddenly perceived how they fit together into a broad and comprehensive analytical pattern. I am just sorry that this book wasn't available thirty years ago when I was a freshly-minted MBA!

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2005-09-13

Imagine these scenarios: Your corporate leaders are always "difficult." You butt heads with your superiors and even your clients. As a middle manager, you have trouble figuring out what the boss wants. You seem to fight too much with your spouse. If any of these examples are familiar, you need to learn how to tame the "lions" in your life. Using analogies from training actual lions in the circus ring, author Steven L. Katz shows you how to work with human lions - people who demand dominance and control - from a bossy supervisor to a stubborn spouse. This is intended to be a textbook for the study of human psychology and interaction. Though you might wish it were a little deeper, the jungle beast analogy keeps it interesting. We recommend it to those who want to learn how to stand their ground in business, politics or modern day culture.

          Book Description

Richard Farleigh reveals the 100 secret strategies that he developed to enable him to succeed in the markets.During his time running a trading desk, Farleigh set out to develop a repeatable methodology based on observation and reasoning, not just on one-off flukes and luck, to enable him to outperform the market on a regular basis. The (potentially controversial) beliefs that he incorporates into his strategies include: - Markets tend to under-react, not overreact.- Big, obvious ideas offer great opportunities.- It is safe to invest with a consensus view.- Contrarian trading is usually irrational.- It is best to enter and exit the share market at the right times instead of always staying invested.- Price trends are well known but under-utilised.- Chartists are just astrologers.- Investment and trading are increasingly similar. Some of the techniques simply involve being better than other investors at some of the basics, including only chasing genuine opportunities, managing risks and coping with losses. As his trading results started to attract some attention, Farleigh was frequently asked to give presentations of his ideas to other professional traders. From the feedback during these sessions he realised that others were interested in an approach to investing which was based on first principles. Finding that anecdotes were the best way to make a point, and that ideas could be summarised into numbered strategies, allowed him to show clearly how the methodology worked.Years later, he is still using the same approach, and has found that amateurs, as well as professionals, are keen to find out how markets work and how to improve their investment performance. This book contains thosesecrets.----------About the 100 Strategies The rules are based on two broad experiences. Firs

4 out of 5 stars To 'stay in the game' requires discipline........2006-08-31

I found this book by Richard Farleigh to be clearly written and well paced. It honestly and fairly describes the techniques which work for him as a professional investor who has managed to 'stay in the game' and made money from it. He does also point out that acquaintances of his use different methodologies, which work well for them.

He clearly identifies the comparative advantage most likely to be useful to aspirants and makes clear what he means by the next big thing so as not to make such terminology seem flippant. My understanding, for example, is that one should watch out for shifts in technology such as the introduction of transistors versus tubes/valves and the petrol-engine versus the steam-engine, since these big changes are the fundamental drivers for a plethora of novel invention and genuine opportunity.

He also indicates the markets best suited to the beginner (property) and those that are specialities (currency) requiring knowledge and experience.

Above all, Richard Farleigh makes it clear that investing is a discipline and is doomed to failure if one is not prepared to apply themselves to the work involved.

I was rather surprised at his admiration for John Maynard Keynes who is, without dispute, the worst economist ever, and whose philosophies have massively undermined the prosperity and freedom of the west and significantly contributed to contemporary terrorism and the inability of the western powers to confront it in their befuddlement over moral equivalence.

I enjoyed Richard Farleigh's book and think he would enjoy reading: 'Capitalism: A Treatise on Economics by George Reisman.'

5 out of 5 stars Great Principles for Investing.......2006-08-30

If you're looking for a book on specific investing techniques, you may be disappointed. Richard Farleigh provides some insightful big picture principles that serve as a great foundation for speculation in general. The examples he provides from his own life didn't come off as narcissistic to me. I enjoyed examining a professional investor's thought process and actions.

My only gripe about the book is the way it is organized. The thoughts are roughly categorized but don't flow that well. I'm on my second reading, taking notes, and re-ordering the ideas.

This is one of the most best big picture trading books I've read.

1 out of 5 stars me me me.......2006-03-09

not the worst book i have read. The book would be better if Farleigh quite taking about himself. I think he wrote the book looking at himsef in a mirror

          2 out of 5 stars Poor.......2006-02-27

This review is in two parts.

The first half of the book provides a biography of the author's life, his experiences in Australia, and his life as a porfessional investor. This is a terrific read, and provides a useful guide to the author's investment philosophy.

However the second half of the book, which claims to set out the philosophy in detail, is unstructured and lacks any real detail.

The main philoosphy discussed is trend folllwing. However, nowhere is is adequately explained or described, or illustrated.

A lot of the philosophy is to be taken on blind faith. Perhaps it's a case where the author has an intrinsic understanding of marketing movements which is difficult to describe or quantify. This book suggests that!

5 out of 5 stars Among top 10.......2006-02-11

I have read about 60 trading/investment books during the last 5 years. Every book had something to give. Some very little and some a lot. No 1 for me is still "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator". After that it is harder to grade them. This book I would rank somewhere in the top 10 area. It is said that in order to become sucessful in the markets and to over time take out more than you put in, you must find an approach that fits your nature and, somewhere, the nature of the markets. "Taming the Lion" gave me insights and helped me on the way to my personal approach.

I did like this book and I went through it fairly fast. There were parts of the book that were not explained very well. Such as how Ross Sutherland was induced to help the evil Fergusson. The ending is a bit surprising and a little unexplained. By that I mean the author doesn't explain the sudden change in emotions of the character. Overall, the book was good and recommended

4 out of 5 stars A unique and necessary perspective.......2004-03-06

Most books about business never stop to ask the question "why are you in business at all?" The unquestioned assumption is that you want to make money. Well, duh. We all do, of course. But there are countless ways to make money, and some paths you can follow have a heart, while others do not.

This book takes us back a step and asks us to examine who we are, what we want out of life, what kind of person we want to be. From that personal vision, everything else should flow -- including career and business choices, and how you spend the hours of your day. Don Johnson does a great job of presenting a step-by-step approach to developing a personal vision, and then carrying that vision forward into your business, whatever that may be. This is a way to not only succeed in business, but to lead a rich and fulfilling life while you do so.

              4 out of 5 stars A Mission for Life.......2003-12-08

What if you had a mission statement that covered your entire life? A short, precisely worded mantra that served as a touchstone for every important decision you made and every action you took? "Lion Taming" describes a path to a way of living that infuses meaning and purpose in both our daily and life-long existence.

The book does an effective job of demonstrating why attention to the phrase "Know thyself" is at the start of many great things. It argues that an endeavor that does not spring from one's purpose on the planet is destined for failure, and provides a recipe for identifying one's personal "essences" from which, in turn, a life vision can be distilled.

A good deal of the book is devoted to helping organizational leaders transcribe life vision into corporate vision, and it does an excellent job of showing how different kinds of people effectively utilize different types of leadership that arise from their personal leanings and dispositions. But the book is about much more than leadership: the underlying message is that any of us can find more joy in life when our everyday labors are in harmony with our basic ideas about what we want out of life. We learn that the harmony between the two leads to greater contributions to those around us, whether they are our family and friends, our business colleagues, or society in general.

The author draws from his personal experience as well as his extensive professional consulting to illustrate his method with examples from a rich variety of personalities and situations. The conclusion that results from his work is that if you are willing to do some profound internal exploration, you will be capable of pulling closer to your native essence, and you will reap the joy of finding harmony with yourself in most everything you do.

4 out of 5 stars Life experiences - life learning.......2003-09-22

A great learning insight for me was that I could take previous successes (seemingly unrelated) from different points in my life (broken into four quadrants)and use these successes as positive building blocks for going forward. Many times we do not truly know what resources and skills we have. The process the author walked me through was a great way to access some of those talents.

4 out of 5 stars Leadership not just by the numbers.......2003-09-21

LION TAMING is a refreshingly practical, pragmatic business book. Don Johnson's mix of mini-case studies, personal anecdotes and actionable "bullet point" ideas is delivered in a casual, conversational style that proves to be as thought provoking as it is entertaining. LION TAMING is a welcome change from so many business management books that look at leadership from a purely bottom line/shareholder value perspective. Johnson's message is crystal clear: business leaders must define and embrace their own life vision before they can win lasting support for their company's vision and mission. LION TAMING provides a basic outline for establishing inner value-based leadership, which should make it required reading in boardrooms and executive office suites across post-Enron America.

4 out of 5 stars Great reading for leaders and those that aspire to be..........2003-09-20

Don Johnson does an excellent job of describing the personalities and leadership influences of the individuals in his book. Don is also very sensitive to the interests of his audience and the experiences of the leaders he describes in his book. I recommend this to all who hope to have an influence in this lifetime...

1 out of 5 stars A little history with your historical romance would be nice.......2006-03-23

Am I the only reader who would like just a tiny bit of historical accuracy in historical romances? (not unlike wishing a western writer knows his Hoolihan from his Quirt.)

Plot and characterization would be nice too but I don't want to ask for the moon. Besides a plethora of books about medieval warfare no further away than the local library or book store, the nice people with the SCA (society for creative anachronism) are a wonderful resource for beta reading your medieval stories. I'd suggest the author of this drivel try it next time.

As one example of plot/historical errors . . .the “Lion’s” forced medical retirement.

John, the blind king of Bohemia went into battle at Crecy tethered to his knights, so “retirement from the field” because of a trick knee is far from believable. And sprinkling dialogue with the occasional “naught” or “milord” is a cheap lazy way of trying to get a medieval flavor for a story. As well as history I’d suggest the author read The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones. This may help avoid some of the more egregious cliches.

3 out of 5 stars Good fun, however dated it feels........1999-07-02

This is my first ebook, bought out of whim on a long, boring day when the bookstore is three hours drive away from where I was. It's a readable thing. It is, also, very dated in feel.

It is also unfortunate the author uses every cliche in the book - evil other woman, big misunderstandings, and stock characters. The heroine is headstrong and ninny to the point of bullheadedness sometimes.

But having said that, I did enjoy the story. It's pleasant. My friend told me this is the author's first book. If so, I think I'll try another book of hers.

4 out of 5 stars A very sexy and entertaining book........1998-06-22

Marilyn Grall's TAMING THE LION is a very sexy story of a forced marriage between two passionate and strong people. Lionel is the warrior who is order to marry by his lord. Alexandra is the lady. She is young, beautiful, and running wild. In the style of Virginia Henley and Thea Devine, TAMMING THE LION tells the story of a marriage duty, that turns into a passionate marriage of love.
