    Book Description

One of the most significant, funny, and nails-on-a-chalkboard jarring artists of the second half of the 20th century, Bruce Nauman has expanded the scope of traditional art practice and influenced a generation of artists. He has made himself into a fountain (one upping Marcel Duchamp?), cast the space under a chair, fashioned a screeching carousel of carcass-like parts, reinvented the neon sign as a contemporary haiku, and, most recently, recorded the dullness of his studio in real time. His ongoing investigation of our most basic physical, emotional, and psychological states has been literally experienced by each of his viewers. Bruce Nauman: Theaters of Experience is a focused selection of works in a range of media, including sculpture, video, holograms, neon, and architectural installations, which examine the artist's use of performance devices as a conduit for heightened self-awareness for both artist and audience. Featuring works from the Guggenheim Panza Collection, augmented with loans from several German collections, the exhibition and catalogue trace the theatrical elements in Nauman's oeuvre, as well as his manipulation of the performer-spectator roles.

        Book Description

Japanese two-year-olds are indulged, dependent, and undisciplined toddlers, but by the age of six they have become obedient, self-reliant, and cooperative students. When Lois Peak traveled to Japan in search of the "magical childrearing technique" behind this transformation, she discovered that the answer lies not in the family but in the preschool, where teachers gently train their pupils in proper group behavior. Using case studies drawn from two contrasting schools, Peak documents the important early stages of socialization in Japanese culture.
Contrary to popular perceptions, Japanese preschools are play-centered environments that pay little attention to academic preparation. It is here that Japanese children learn their first lessons in group life. The primary goal of these cheerful--even boisterous--settings is not to teach academic facts of learning-readiness skills but to inculcate behavior and attitudes appropriate to life in public social situations.
Peak compares the behavior considered permissible at home with that required of children at preschool, and argues that the teacher is expected to be the primary agent in the child's transition. Step by step, she brings the socialization process to life, through a skillful combination of classroom observations, interviews with mothers and teachers, transcripts of classroom events, and quotations from Japanese professional literature.

I bought the book to prepare myself for my son's entrance to Japanese preschool and found a wealth of cultural insights about the roles of Japanese mothers and Japanese schools. Based on classroom observations in both urban and rural settings and with an extensive bibliography, it is an academic work which can also be useful to foreign parents with children entering Japanese schools,

From the supplier: The year 2000 date change problem can permeate other aspects of business beside the computer. Associations should look into microchip-controlled equipment which their offices operate such as heating, cooling and water systems in addition to security and parking access systems. These businesses are advised to work directly with embedded systems product manufacturers to evaluate and replace noncompliant units with those that are Y2K compliant.

                      Book Description

All chess players need a reliable defense to 1 e4, preferably one that is fun to play and provides real winning chances. The Sveshnikov Sicilian fits the bill perfectly. Black's active piece-play compensates for his damaged pawn-structure, making for an exciting battle. To play the Sveshnikov well requires a good understanding of the themes, and a moderate amount of concrete knowledge. This Easy Guide supplies just that. Once you have read this book you will be ready to start playing and winning with the Sveshnikov. This guide, which is part of Everyman's Easy Guide series, includes enough information and understanding to enable the reader to play the Sveshnikov with confidence. It provides a sound and dynamic system, supported at the highest levels by Kramnik and Shirov and a complete repertoire for Black in the mainline Sicilian.

5 out of 5 stars Review from Mexico.......2002-11-17

Having gone through most of the book, I find the way it's set out very easy-going.
Nice intro explaining the ideas behind the moves for both Black and White. All variations can be found through the index but they are laid out in a very logical manner.
The author keeps things simple and straight forward.
If you're interested in playing an active game, this variation is your pick and this book can help you out.
My experience has been that White will try to avoid the Sveshnikov unless he has studied it (typically I encounter: 1.e4,c5;2.Nf3,Nc6;3.Bb5 or Bc4 or d3, etc.)thoroughly.

                      5 out of 5 stars A worthy successor.......2001-11-06

This book is a worthy successor to Krasenkov's 6-year-old book. It is not as "complete", especially when it comes to early divergences, but has all the latest moves (of course) and is much easier to find your way around. To the credit of a young writer, Aagaard lays his opinions on the line with plenty of exclamation marks, so that one doesn't have to get right to the end of lines to see which one is preferred. This is better than the usual run of opening books.

5 out of 5 stars How a book about chess openings should be written..........2000-09-15

This book pefectly illustrates how a chess opening book should be written. It starts with a chapter that explains typical plans and structures arising from the Sveshnikov. The best part of this introductory chapter is the explanation by the author on where the different pieces are best placed ,what piece exchange to be avoided and what piece exchange is favorable. For example, the chapter states that black should generally avoid an opposite colored bishop positions; and it si favorable for black to exchange her dark colored bishop for a knight. Needless to say, reading this chapter alone will significantly improve your knowledge of the Sveshnikov.

The next chapters give enough theories and grandmaster games. If you read the introductory chapter and grasp the ideas, memorizing the variations becomes a lot easier. Of course, the author continues to give the ideas behind the variations which also help a lot to retain the variations in your head.

If you feel that you are comfortable playing positions with structures like f7,f6,e5,d6, with the king uncastled, then Sveshnikov may be a good opening choice to be added to your opening repertoire, and if you do decide to play the Sveshnikov, this book is a must. This is better than the chessbase training program with the same subject.

                      4 out of 5 stars Clear and up-to-date Coverage.......2000-09-05

This up-to-date treatment of the Sveshnikov includes a well-written 19-page introduction to the ideas and plans for both sides in this opening. The coverage is comprehensive, balanced and easy to digest, and all this in the space of 144 pages.

Another recent book on the Sveshnikov is the one by McDonald. McDonald has more coverage of the Bird/Larsen line while Aagaard has more coverage of the 7.Nd5 line. In their coverage of the main lines, however, the two books seem to be comparable in detail and references to contemporary games. Aagaard perhaps gives more game refernces and analysis since he save on space that would otherwise go on notes to complete games. However some players prefer complete games to be cited (as McDonald does) to see the course games employing a particular opening are likely to follow. The book by Aagaard has to be used in conjunction with a database and/or Informants. My opinion is a player should have both books, though I slightly prefer Aagaard because of the structure and format.

                      5 out of 5 stars Very impressed........2000-07-16

I can't say enough great things about this book. Superior and complete. Thorough in a way no other writers are. It feels like he truly cares deeply about what goes into his works. I truly hope he continues to provide us with more works.

For more than three decades, Philip Kotler has been the authority on marketing for business grad students around the world. (His seven textbooks on various aspects of the topic are available in 18 languages in 58 countries, for example, while his seminal Marketing Management is considered the most widely used volume among all MBAs.) Even with all these publications, and a consultation/seminar practice aligned with firms such as AT&T, IBM, Michelin, Shell, and Merck, Kotler never committed to paper his popular theories concerning the ways in which executives and their managers should approach their real-life marketing programs. Until, that is, Kotler on Marketing. Comprehensive yet clear, this new compendium finally synthesizes Kotler's vast experiences and proven ideas into a single accessible resource. Three meaty initial sections address a series of strategic, tactical, and administrative concerns, ranging from identifying opportunities and building brand equity to utilizing outside intelligence and evaluating performance. A brief fourth part titled "Transformational Marketing" offers Kotler's perspective on "the revolutionary impact on the marketplace and marketing practice of the new technologies ... and new media" including the Internet, fax machines, sales-automation software, cable TV, videoconferencing, and "personal newspapers." --Howard Rothman

5 out of 5 stars 11 marketing lessons for managers.......2006-10-08

Marketing guru, Philip Kotler, covers eleven essential topics for success in this book. Based on marketing lectures and seminars he has given throughout the world, Kotler covers a range of practical marketing issues that all marketing managers should consider.

Kotler on Marketing is organized into three parts (strategic marketing, tactical marketing, administrative marketing, and transformational marketing) and covers topics like identifying market opportunities, developing value propositions, creating a marketing plan and marketing on the Internet. The chapters are short and end with several "Questions to Consider," so the busy readers can reflect on the ideas presented and apply them to their own companies.

I found this book extremely insightful, but without the rigorous detail of his book for graduate students, Marketing Management. There is also a useful list of cited materials at the end of the book that provides a starting point for future reading on topics of interest. For people interested in building a winning marketing strategy, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Learn from the master.......2006-02-16

Legendary Kellogg Graduate School of Business professor, Philip Kotler, offers business a plan on how to create, win and dominate markets in today's new economy.

Kotler sees today's customers as more sophisticated and price sensitive than in any other period in history. These customers also have much higher expectations and will quickly switch to a competitor if these expectations are not met.

Kotler further explains how traditional marketing tools are no longer as effective as they were in the past. This book offers his insight as how to create, win, and dominate markets.

The central part of this book focuses on designing a set of activities that a company can engage in to influence buyers to purchase their product or service. This set of activities is referred to as a marketing mix. Marketing mix is typically based on the four P's:

                      · Product. Products today must be better or different in some way to engage customers to purchase it.
                      · Price. Kotler argues that the standard cost-based pricing, which simply ads a markup to the cost of a product, is no longer effective. Instead, he promotes value-based pricing, where prices are not based on their cost, but based on their value to the customer
                      · Place. Significant thought needs to go into how a company delivers it products or services to its customers.
                      · Promotion. The right mix of delivery and communication tools must be utilized in order for a company to deliver its message to potential buyers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great and Thorough Overview of Marketing Management.......2005-01-10

I have known Professor Kotler for a long time and I have admired his work in marketing. It is a subject that has been downplayed by a lot of top business schools in this country.

This particular Kotler book was brought to my attention by a friend of mine who is a top marketing strategist on Madison Avenue. He heard that I was interested in reading something about marketing management so he gave the book to me as a gift.

It is amazing how practical and clear the book is. It gives a vivid picture of marketing in a corporation and insights about how to improve one's marketing department. It is also a great book for beginners in marketing for it offers thorough overview of marketing management(something that can be applied to life and business).
