Eisler’s role in German music is similar to that of Brecht in German literature and the two men worked together for nearly thirty years. Together with Webern and Berg, Eisler is considered one of the three great pupils of Schoenberg. Albrecht Betz divides Eisler’s life and music into four periods. The early formative period as student of Schoenberg includes compositions written in Vienna up to 1925. From 1926 to 1933, the second period, Eisler lived in Berlin and made his greatest impact with his political vocal music. The third phase of Eisler’s life, fifteen years of exile, was spent principally in the USA, and the fourth (from 1948) in East Germany. The author shows how Eisler is distinguished from other great twentieth-century composers in his belief that music had a social function, and how he liberated modern music from what he and others felt was its isolation. Originally published in German in 1976, this English edition is illustrated with music examples and includes a complete list of works, and a bibliography which has been adapted for the English-speaking reader.

Books is overpriced and inaccurate.......2007-09-03

You would expect that for a book that cost as much as this one you would get an accurate history of Hanns Eisler, his life, his family, and his troubles with his family, but that is not the case. The book spends too much time mitigating Hanns and his brother Gerhardt controversial ties with the Communist party while marginalizing his sister, Ruth Fischer, their chief accuser. Sorry to say that this books, although interesting, is afraid to go beyond the surface and is a whitewash of this controversial, but brilliant musician. By the time you finish it, you will would think that his sister was crazy and that Hanns and his brother were just plain ordinary folks hounded out of America by that mean old committee and Richard Nixon. Go ahead and read it. Read his much marginalized, but brilliant sister's book too. By the time, you are finished both, you just might break out into a chorus of Night and Day instead of the Eisler composition, The Comintern March. Eisler's life, relationship with his familyand politics were much more interesting and complicated than you will find in the pages of this overpriced whitewash. I doubt, however, a true account of the man will ever see the light of day.

comprehensive,analytic history of a 20th Century master.......1999-04-14

Although written in the mid-Eighties this is still an exhaustive,detailed account of a Twentieth Century master,the first in English. Eisler was a Marxist and wrote music as well, two ultimately unique facets of a creator today. No one forsaw the emergence of culture as a last bastion of internal resistence to the state of the world. This is why Betz's book here is so important, for it gives both the analytic and the historical. Betz traces Eisler's entire career. Beginning with the early days as a Schoenberg student. Eisler to my mind anyway had more of a realist vision of the state of Germany,than his counterparts Weill,Berg or Webern in the Twenties,which is why he adopted his political convictions. His early music adopts a Schoenbergian free atonality but he finds his own voice there. Compelling, neurotic and momentum bound are the main features of this early music,He wrote a powerful "First Piano Sonata" from this period and began dabbling in music as social discourse He utilized newspaper clippings, or "Zeitungsausschnitte" the title of the work for piano and voice. Betz extends his analysis to Eisler's meeting in Berlin with Brecht, one of the most prolific and profound collaboration of this century. Betz develops a concept of Eisler's modernity and the unique creative challenges he faced in uniting text with music. Eisler, who wrote over 500 songs during his life was like the Schubert of our age,almost no text was beyond a run through with piano accompaniment. The thrust of this modernity was Eisler's penchant for a striking image, a compact,terse lyrical musical means. Often his songs are quite short which points to this modernity in fast development and quick,concentrated musical motives, where single exposed tones can trigger an image of violence or terror. There is also here an elaborate discussion of Eisler's last major work the opera "Johann Faustus". When Eisler was thrown out of the United States he returned to the DDR, East Germany, and was wholly ignored by the apparatcik authorities,despite the fact that he wrote their National Anthem. This opera was reason enough for this institutional neglect, with veiled barbs on the seductive sides of tyranny. He used the "Peasant Wars" in Germany in the early 1500's as a remote yet very immediate reality for this opera. Betz also includes a comprehensive list of all of Eisler's works including reference to numerous filmscores.

THE GOLF CROSSWORD.......2001-05-26

The book was recommended to me by a neighbor whose husband liked golf while she liked crosswords. I not being either of the two, was skeptical but just tried it out to see how much i might by chance know, having grown up with golf lovers. Well i turned out loving it. I enjoy doing little puzzles and enjoyed spending time working in the book. The format was great, with lots of extra quotes for me to send to my golf-loving friends. I am also especially interested in the spanish crossword coming out soon. Bottom line- a great gift, and i recommend it.

insufficient coverage of betting tactics.......1999-02-14

This book provides the basic guidlines a golfer would use to gamble during the playing of one round of golf. The explaination of the gambling games and how they are played is most instructive. This instruction teaches the beginning golf gambler how to place bets and score specific games in a manner to allow the beginer to protect himslef from cheating or being decieved by a experienced charlatan. This book lacks coverage and discription of how golf gambling would be applied to a charity event sponsored by a golf course and jointly played by all golf club members.

An Economists Defense of Free Trade.......2006-07-11

This book makes a reasonably decent defense of free trade. It speaks in predominantly layman's terms, and is entertaining enough to hold the layman's attention. Irwin does a good job refuting the most patently ridiculous claims that free trade victimizes those it employs and other silly claims.

It doesn't do the best job demonstrating that trade with developing countries benefits wealthy nations, however. It does try to do so, and offers some evidence, but I wish the book had made a stronger effort in this area as this is where most protectionists simply cite the trade deficit as manifest evidence that we are worse off in free trade, without understanding that our standard of living rises when we have cheap goods, and the market for our high skill jobs and products increases as developing countries grow wealthier.

The book does bring up a good point of accounting balance, noting that foreign investment in the U.S. offsets the trade deficit, but I fear that most protectionists are sufficiently xenophobic that this argument is likely to scare them rather than reassure them.

Full of ahistorical assertions and disingenuous arguments.......2004-03-05

In this book the author argues for the "economic benefits of trade, not just for corporations but for people and the environment. He illustrates how protectionist policies damage the economy and fail to save jobs. Examining U.S. trade policy, he shows how "fair trade" measures are arbitrary, unfair, and often harmful"

Yet this author makes slight of America's long history of protectionist policies when it served its interest. In fact the history of America's industrial development was protecting her rising industries. So now that Americas industries are strong and known world wide; its labor force is a problem because it wants decent wages and health benefits. What is the solution? Free trade! Or free trade in cheap labor and dealing with counties that have no labor unions, no regulations that get in the way of business and officials that are easy to bribe.
This book is for those who have no critical facilities what so ever.

The case for free trade.......2003-10-09

Irwin's book, together with Bhagwati's Free Trade today,
makes a strong case for free trade. The argument is clear and
the book is easy to read and full of evidence supporting
free trade. Among other topics, the author discusses
the harmful effects of protection on developing/
developed economies, trade and the environment
and the role of WTO. Irwin's book is non-technical
and more historical than Bhagwati's. The latter
is more theoretical, at least in some parts, but also
a great read. For arguments against free trade using
economic theory see "trade warriors" by Marc Busch or " global Trade and Conflicting National Interests"
by Ralph E. Gomory, William J. Baumol

Necessity to arguing.......2002-07-26

Doesnt it always seem that your friends subscribe to the wrong views, and you to the right one? Well, at least for me it is. Whether your pals are from the anarchist wing or the Pat Buchanan camp, or even deviate just a little from your (correct) free trade stance, you should read this book. And even if you believe in the unholy stance of skepticism of free trade , you should read it too, for "The Economist" said that if this book doesnt convince anti-free traders, nothing will; so go ahead and test your faithfulness.

I am not an economist, and I hate reading economics text books filled with useless jargon. Before reading some great books, economics was as complicated as chemistry, physics or calculas to me. But after reading a few books, "Lexus and the Olive Tree", "Mystery of Capital" and "Peddling Prosperty", I realized that it isn't that complicated, its just the economists who create this aura of an esoteric subject.

This book is written in simple language, but when it does use phrases that regular people don't understand, he does something rare - he explains their meaning.

This is an excellent book, but only after reading The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Tom Friedman's book is the main weapon in my debating arsenal, and "Free Trade Under Fire" book gives me a large cache of ammunition, as do Peddling Prospery (or anything else by Paul Krugman like Pop Internationalism, another MUST read), and Henrando de Soto's masterpiece "The Mystery of Capital"(dont even look at his "Other Path", it is simplified and better argued in this "Mystery").

Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter.......2002-04-05

I have had the honor of having the author of this book as a professor in college. Not surprisingly he teaches classes dealing with international trade. All I can say is that he is an economist of the highest order and that he is capable of taking some extrodinarily difficult concepts and explaining them with a level of clarity that make them seem obvious. He takes this teaching approach to his book, making it both intelligent and approachable. If you ever actually wanted to know anything about international trade and even be able to discuss in a relevant manner the points at hand, read this book. You will be smarter for having done so.
