    Book Description

Since the death of Generalisimo Francisco Franco, Spanish culture has undergone significant change. And in Spain, as everywhere, social changes are portrayed most dramatically in the movies. Peter Besas's Behind the Spanish Lens : Spanish Cinema under Fascism and Democracy traces the work of those culturally powerful filmmakers who struggled through the years of Fascist rule and found new voices and a worldwide audience under the Socialist government that followed Franco's death.

Through his personal access to those filmmakers, Peter Besas has been able to recreate the political context and the cultural roots of this distinctive national cinema. Interviews with more than twenty of Spain's most renowned directors include stories of hidden film reels and surreptitious research, of lost scenes and banned movies, of vague and constantly changing government guidelines, of personal attacks and the assassination of the Minister of Culture twenty-three months before the death of the Generalisimo.

Behind the Spanish Lens is the first book-length treatment of Spanish film in English and is the only volume to treat the history of the art, from the first Spanish screening to the filmmaking trends that are evident today. The book includes over fifty stills from the most significant of those films, plot descriptions, and filmographies. And equally important, Peter Besas has deftly traced the varied relationship between the developing art and the political realities of a volatile nation.

      Book Description

Although Luis Buñuel, one of the great filmmakers of the century, was notoriously reluctant to discuss his own work in public, he wrote--and wrote well--on many subjects over the years. This collection proceeds chronologically, from poetry and short stories written in Buñuel's youth in Spain to an essay written in 1980, not long before his death. Newly translated into English, the writings offer startling insights into the filmmaker's life and thought.
The earliest pieces came well before Buñuel joined the Surrealist movement in Paris and created the landmark film Un chien andalou with Salvador Dalí. Yet these and the early Surrealist writings reveal the inventiveness of the mind that would later create such masterpieces of cinema as L'Age d'or, Los olvidados, Viridiana, The Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and That Obscure Object of Desire.
Later writings, which include screenplays and reflections on his own and others' films, illuminate many aspects of Buñuel's career, as well as the ways of thinking and perceiving that underlie his unique cinematic style. The final essay by this extraordinary artist sums up his view of the world--still vibrant and full of contradictions--at the end of his life.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2003-06-14

The "return" of the master. Although not as good of a read, imho, as MY LAST SIGH, this is still required reading for Bunuel fans, and still retains all of the great artist's power, humor, and insight. In an era of big bucks and ready-made food, it stands out like a whale among minnows.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, these writings are available.......2000-06-07

This is a wonderful and funny collection of surreal writings from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Many of the earlier, surreal writings by Bunuel, written when he was with the Surrealists in France, are imaginative and funny. There is also the complete collection of poetry originally titled An Andulsian Dog, which is surprisingly strong. The criticisms by Bunuel, along with the autobiographical material, offer insight to his aesthetic beliefs and his thinking. There are also snatches of the last screenplay on which he was working before he died in addition to the original screenplay for Andulsian Dog and a Hollywood treatment for an unrealized film GOYA. Overall, this is a big treasure for those who love Bunuel and who have been anxiously awaiting to read his hard to find pieces. It is a great companion to Bunuel's MY LAST SIGN.

              Book Description

This new book catalogues some 215 prominent film directors from both countries, giving accurate bio-filmographies and providing an in-depth reference source. Full attention is given to the propaganda cinema under dictators Franco and Salazar, to film-makers who left to work abroad--especially in Latin America--and to those filming in the regional languages (mainly Basque and Catalan). There is coverage not only of internationally well-known figures Almodovar, Bunuel, Oliveira, and Saura, but also across the complete range of feature, documentary, and animation film-making: early pioneers Segundo de Chomon, Catalans Jose Maria Codina, Fructuoso Gelabert, and Magi Muria, and Portuguese Aurelio da Paz dos Reis; experimentalists and avant-garde figures such as Lorenzo Llobet-Gracia, Jose Val del Omar, and Nemesio Sobrevila and documentarist Antonio Campos; animators Cruz Delgado, Francisco Macian, and Arturo Moreno (who worked on the first full-length animated film in Europe, Garbancito de la Mancha, in 1945). Each entry gives information on the film-maker's career (date and place of birth, educational qualifications, work experience, positions held), together with a list of films made, with dates of production. There are three indexes: Country Index, Film Title Index, and General Index. The index of film titles lists over 3,000 entries, including the original languages and their English language and aka equivalents.

                    Book Description

In Refiguring Spain, Marsha Kinder has gathered a collection of new essays that explore the central role played by film, television, newspapers, and art museums in redefining Spain’s national/cultural identity and its position in the world economy during the post-Franco era. By emphasizing issues of historical recuperation, gender and sexuality, and the marketing of Spain’s peaceful political transformation, the contributors demonstrate that Spanish cinema and other forms of Spanish media culture created new national stereotypes and strengthened the nation’s place in the global market and on the global stage.
These essays consider a diverse array of texts, ranging from recent films by Almodóvar, Saura, Erice, Miró, Bigas Luna, Gutiérrez Aragón, and Eloy de la Iglesia to media coverage of the 1993 elections. Francoist cinema and other popular media are examined in light of strategies used to redefine Spain’s cultural identity. The importance of the documentary, the appropriation of Hollywood film, and the significance of gender and sexuality in Spanish cinema are also discussed, as is the discourse of the Spanish media star—whether involving film celebrities like Rita Hayworth and Antonio Banderas or historical figures such as Cervantes. The volume concludes with an investigation of larger issues of government policy in relation to film and media, including a discussion of the financing of Spanish cinema and an exploration of the political dynamics of regional television and art museums. Drawing on a wide range of critical discourses, including feminist, postcolonial, and queer theory, political economy, cultural history, and museum studies, Refiguring Spain is the first comprehensive anthology on Spanish cinema in the English language.

This book is a very quick read and is set up exactly as the title says. It's 201, numbered paragraphs, each with a little insight into how to deal with "those people." The sections are informative and helpful. I would definitely recommend reading this book before trying to get transferred away from the difficult person in your life.

                          Book Description

Being saddled with a terrible supervisor can turn even the best job into a nightmare. Unfortunately, not every boss is the great symbol of managerial perfection one would hope for. In fact, more people than not consider themselves stuck with a "bad boss." But short of remaining miserable or quitting a job, what can be done about it? "A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses" provides readers with savvy, practical advice for coping with managers and supervisors who are mean, incompetent, unethical, and worse. The book includes powerful strategies for not only working with -- but thriving under -- such bad boss types as: * The Great Betrayers -- how to defend yourself against a corporate backstabber * The Know-Nothing Bosses -- what to do when a boss is clueless * The Bad Communicators -- how to respond when a boss is consistently unclear Whether a boss is high-strung, incompetent, or a power-mad tyrant, this book has the solution.

If you've ever had a job, you've likely come across a bad boss. Bad bosses come in all types from the no-boss and the party planner through the scatterboss and the promises, promises boss to the overloader and the control freak. A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses describes mangers from hell complete with stories of real life versions of these monsters. Each section also includes a What Should the Employee Do section which outlines a number of possible solutions to the problem. A summary called Today's Take-Aways end each section.

A Survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses is an excellent resource for employees stuck in a difficult situation. Not only does the book remind the reader that he or she is not the only one to have such circumstances but also gives them options which are often difficult to think of when stuck in the middle of a problem. Bosses may also want to read this book as often bad bosses don't even realize their problematic behaviour.

It is a great feeling to know that you are not alone in the jungles of the workplace. Especially when the advice comes from an expert...You learn not to kill the "bad bosses" and how to deal with the problem zone with kindness without burning your fingers. Yet, I still hope someday any kind of pills will be discovered to terminate such "bad bosses" and we will live happily ever after.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy bad workplace advice!.......2007-02-05

I used the advice in this book to deal with a bad boss and the toxic work environment that was created. In compliance with Amazon's review policy I won't reveal it here. In my case the end result is hostility, harassment, and retaliation. What Scott apparently forgets is that these "bad bosses" will regard ANY challenge (even those advocated in her book) as a personal threat and will use the assets at his disposal (i.e., company assets, discipline process) for retribution AGAINST the assertive employee. And since he IS the boss, he has the full backing of the company, regardless of legality, ethics, or motives. These tactics may work with rational, well adjusted supervisors in employee-focused companies, but in my experience pathological bosses are the rule and not the exception.

Do yourself a favor. If you have a bad boss, find a better job and DON'T buy this book or use the advice contained therein.

I was rather disapointed in this book. It appears that Ms. Graham Scott's prefered method of dealing with bad bosses is just to put up with them and keep things as status quo hoping it will all work out in the end. Pretty lame advise in my opinion. I am looking for a book that actually helps me solve problems not just put up with them.

If managing people once felt like a stay at the Taj Mahal, today it's more like a visit to Beirut's Commodore Hotel, where guests were asked upon check-in, "Sniper side or shelling side?" As author and columnist Bob Rosner pointed out in his earlier book, Working Wounded, bosses are poked from above and prodded from below. How to cope? The Boss's Survival Guide aims to give managers tools for handling the shrapnel. Its 430 pages discuss the 65 most vexing challenges bosses face today, including how to screen out jerks when hiring, how to let people go fairly and legally, how to change an employee's problem behavior, and how to keep people motivated.

Don't let the size of The Boss's Survival Guide daunt you; this is not a book to sit and read cover to cover. It's meant as a reference tool, a kind of Physician's Desk Reference for help when you're facing a specific dilemma. Which is not to say it's a dull read. On the contrary, the authors (who, in addition to Rosner, include Allan Halcrow, former editor of Workforce magazine, and Alan Levins, an employment attorney) have worked overtime to present the information in humorous, easy-to-digest snapshots. Each chapter is divided into four sections: a short background area called "Know the Issue"; a set of concrete action steps; a highly useful section called "Stay out of Jail"; and "Manage Up," a short section on how to handle your own boss. Most chapters also include brief real-world examples and indicate where to go if you need more information on a particular problem.

Overall, the book is a comprehensive, highly readable reference tool that would be of use to both new and seasoned managers. In a cover quote, business luminary Ken Blanchard writes, "This book has everything you'll ever need to know about being an effective boss but don't have time to learn." He's right on the money. --Charles Decker

                          Book Description

In today’s booming economy, there are more jobs than there are qualified people to fill them. Retaining those qualified employees has become a manager’s top priority. Today’s managers not only need to make sure their employees are productive, but also need to make sure their employees remain satisfied and motivated—otherwise employees will leave.

According to recent surveys, what really causes employees to stay or drives them away is “the boss,” and not money or perks. That means that managers need to learn how to manage in ways that will attract qualified workers and make them want to stay. Short on theory and long on hands-on, real-world advice and guidance, this survival guide:

                          • Tells managers, in plain English, why and how they need to change the way they operate in order to hold on to valued employees
                          • Covers all the bases, including hiring and orientation, team-building, coaching, setting expectations, painless performance appraisals, and other day-to-day issues
                          • Features Rosner’s trademark humor— well-known to the tens of thousands of loyal readers of his nationally syndicated column, “Working Wounded”

                          ...fast enough.

The Boss's Survival Guide is fairly worthless tripe. Appears to have been written by a group of tipsy Union reps. Too PC and too anti-Management to be used by any real manager.

Gonna supervise a group of tree huggers out to protest at an NRA meeting? This "book" is for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money or time.

This is a good, general book for managers, especially those who own or manage a small business and don't have the resources of a corporation for guidance. In spite of the glut of business management books on the market, it still amazes me to witness managers repeat common mistakes in the areas this book covers: how to hire, how to fire, how to conduct and document performance reviews, etc. This is not a business strategy book; it's simply a "do's and don'ts" guide for managers. I have heard Bob Rosner speak, and recommend that, if you like the book, you should consider him at a company function.

1 out of 5 stars Politically correct garbage.......2001-08-07

The Boss's Survival Guide adds nothing to the existing literature, demonstrates a nauseating politically correct viewpoint where only women can be harmed, and where information is actually clearly presented, is only useful for the neophyte manager who has been living in a vacuum all his life. I am sorry I wasted my money on this book. As I promised the author in an email, I threw the book into the nearest garbage truck.

1 out of 5 stars Only for first time managers.......2001-07-12

I am always looking for good advice as a manager. This book is really intended for first time managers who do not have a clue about what it means to be a manager, either in the sense of how to manage or the legal issues involved. Having been a manager for some years I found not one single useful paragraph. It is all basic and not inspired at all. Bottom line: if you have never been a manager, it is not a bad handbook. If you have any real experience as a manager: save your money.... A better choice would be "First..Break All the Rules"

                                Product Description

This book provides specific, practical advice for engineers who are advancing beyond their technical specialty and find themselves working with other specialties necessary to the development of a complex system or product. They continually face a variety of issues that were invariably never addressed in their schooling: dealing with specifications, project plans, and budgets; improving quality by working with "downstream" functions such as production and service; resolving incompatibilities and bugs under a variety of test conditions; providing technical direction and reviews; and more. Based on "lessons learned" by the author over a forty-year career developing complex systems products, the book presents basic principles that are applicable whether you are in a bureaucratic, multi-national corporation or one with the founder still in control. Regardless of an organization's size or the particular products, the engineering management issues are eerily the same. Systems are systems, and the engineering process basics, derived largely from aerospace, remain the key to success anywhere. Chapter titles typically end in "101" because the basics are usually where the problems lie, as well as their solutions. This book is concise, but the content is dense. As such, it will also provide a succinct refresher for more experienced professionals and their management when facing challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book If You Are Doing Product Development.......2007-04-09

If you are an expert on product development and systems design, read this book. You will certainly come away with additional tools for your toolbox.

If you are a novice or a leader of a product development function, read this book. You will gain valuable insight into the product development process that will enable you to learn, lead, and prosper.

The book is practical and hands-on -- no pie in the sky theory stuff produced by some consulting company. I would imagine that using just one tip in the book will save your team $1000 and probably much more. Just learning how to run a project or team meeting productively will do wonders for your process.

My only criticism is the book tends to make recommendations of proprietary and/or monopolistic software at the expense of other software.

                                5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2006-12-10

My Boss Sucks: A Story Book and Survival Guide presents the stories of ordinary people dealing with bad bosses of every size, shape, and makeup. A handful of humorous, hand-drawn cartoons illustrate these often quirky, usually amusing (from the perspective of the reader, if not the unfortunate who had to deal with the boss), and always instructive true-life tales. A literal survival guide that illustrates by example how best to deal with the worst of office tyrants, and when the best solution of all is simply walking away. Highly recommended.
