A major disappointment.......2000-07-26

A quote from a review reprinted above characterizes this disappointing book as "superbly researched." The reviewer must not be all that familiar with B-Westerns to have come to that bizarre conclusion. In fact, B Western Actors Encyclopedia doesn't seem to have been researched at all. And not only that, author Holland could hardly have used the volumes he quotes in his bibliography and still have managed to misspell the names of important genre director Spencer Gordon Bennet and popular heroine Lucile Browne. (The latter, almost needless to say, becomes Lucille Brown). Nitpicking? I don't think so. This, after all, is a volume that calls itself an encyclopedia. As a matter of fact, most fans of the genre will find themselves in the unusual situation of knowing more about the subject matter than the author. Someone once published a book debunking a recent biography of Errol Flynn. To compile a list of errors and omissions in B WESTERN ACTORS ENCYCLOPEDIA would probably prove just as exhausting. My one star is for McFarland's handsome design and several quite wonderful stills.

A difficult read.......2007-06-23

Unless you are both a music student/professor and a diehard Jethro Tull fan, I fear that like me you will discover this book is likely to be very hard going. Allan Moore is both and that style permeates the whole analysis of this 1971 breakthrough album by Tull.

The interesting thing about the 33 1/3 series is how variable and eclectic the variety of writers are. The thing that hits one most about this specific book is that unless you really know the album inside out and Tull's greater musical history, you are hampered from the outset and the greater part of the book proves pretty unfathomable. Every song gets dissected with a musical surgery analysis that drains any desire to go and listen to the album further and the numerous footnotes to other books, articles and websites (including a fair number by the author) leaves you wondering if you have ended up in some heavy version of a music pseuds corner.

One of the least enjoyable of the series I have read so far!

A good effort, but no inside info........2007-04-11

I'm not a rabid JT fan, but like anyone who listened to progressive FM in the early 70s I am very familiar with the music. I found this book well-written and interesting up to a point. However, I think that the most interesting books in the 33 1/3 series are those in which the author had access to one or more of the persons who participated in the writing and/or production of the album. This book is not in that category. For instance, all quotes from Ian Anderson are taken from previously published interviews. There are also quotes about the album taken from Internet discussion groups. I believe this book would be of interest to hard-core fans, though. The author is well steeped in the music, has done his homework, and has written a serious analysis.

Loved Reading This Book.......2007-03-25

Reading this book sent me into a Jethro Tull whirlpool. While reading the book I listened to Aqualung non-stop, and the song in particular. The author, Allan F. Moore, wrote a bit too high brow for the subject matter, but I suppose he did that to give the album literary credibility, or perhaps that is the only manner in which he knows to write. Nonetheless, it is a great and fun read. In fact, it made me want to read more of the series, something I have yet to do. In Aqualung, Moore dissects each and every song, and spends a great deal of time writing about "Aqualung" and "My God." He also divides the album in halves by its original lp sides, and discusses them as separate themes, something I'd toyed with when listening to the album in the early seventies, but never could delineate such as Moore did. I found myself wanting to listen to each song as I read about it, and try to get a good grip about the themes he discussed. Sometimes I agreed, sometimes I thought he was a bit adrift. At slightly over 100 pages, it went fast and since I had great interest in the topic, it went particularly fast for me. It works well to listen to the album first, then read the book all the way through, then read it and listen to each song as he discusses them.

Aqualung and Jethro Tull taken seriously.......2006-03-28

The author, the head of the Department of Music of Surrey, is both knowledgable of music, Jethro Tull and of the era in which Aqualung was created. For me, it was a true joy to read this -albeit too short- book. The music and lyrics are discussed with the same seriousness one might expect in reading about a significant symphony.

These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. Brilliant.......2007-09-17

I bought this book at our local bookstore mainly because I was so impressed with it as an adult. My (almost) 7 year old daughter took a few readings with which to get into it but that it what I find so fantastic about the way that it is written and illustrated. Having to read the same books over and over for a small child can become tedious for a parent and this is one of the rare stories which is timeless and yet told from a completely new and unique perspective. (Plus it reminds me quite a bit of my little manipulator and how she would have plied a wolf with the cookies.)

This is a wonderful find for both children and their parents alike.

It is always fun to find a book that has global appeal in its humor. This is a book that can be enjoyed by the reader and the small child as well. The humor is clever, silly, and fun. With a few sentences on each page and several simple illustrations on each page this book reads like a cartoon strip. Children like the fact that the boy has control over the Big Bad Wolf. They ask to have this one read over and over again. Early readers can handle this one on their own.

A new favorite in our household.......2006-08-29

My son is 8 years old and this book is a real hit. We have read it many times and it's fun every time. The book is in a cartoon format, and the dialog reminds me very much of Calvin and Hobbes. The relationship between the boy and the wolf is entertaining and funny, and a new reader can easily participate in the voices. The humor is simple enough for children to understand, but sophisticated enough to appeal to parents. This one is a winner -- we look forward to more from Delphine Perret.

A toddler favorite.......2007-08-09

This is a great book/ puzzle for truck-obsessive toddlers. Each of six 2-page spreads features text on one page and 1/6 of a photo of a dump truck in action on the other. Most of each photo page consists of a pop-out puzzle piece. The six pieces can be assembled to make a large (maybe 18" x 30") completed photo. They can also be flipped over to make an illustration of a construction scene featuring a bunch of different trucks.

The puzzle pieces are easy to remove and replace. The same photo appears on the page in the space left when a piece is taken out, so little ones can see which piece goes where when it's time to put them away.

I wouldn't really recommend this book for a car trip. It has too many pieces that separate from the book...punch outs and stuff for games and it makes a mess in your car and they get lost. It had a few good things in it to pass the time, but I wouldn't purchase it again.

Pretty good, was expecting more.......2005-08-21

Although I've used Excel for at least 10 years, I've felt that I could get more out of it, hence the reason that I bought this book. I do like that it comes with a CD with practice files, which gets rid of the tedium of entering reams of data just so you can manipulate them.

Even with all my years with Excel, the first chapter was a complete mystery to me. It consisted of opening files, making minor changes, then immediately closing them again. The next couple of chapters were much better, especially the ones on filtering data, changing the look of a workbook, and summarizing data. The chapter on Pivot tables was another mystery; though I could see what they are, I couldn't fathom exactly why I would use them.

I was especially hoping that the chapter on creating charts would be full of info and helpful tips. However, I feel that this one glossed over a lot of detail, and completely missed how to make a chart easier to comprehend. I've learned more previously about chart making by just using the 'Help' feature that comes with Excel.

Still, I'm glad I got the book; I now know more about Excel than I did before.

Less quantity, but more quality.......2003-05-29

The 2002 version is much more user-friendly with its color pages and helpful organization than the bigger and less-organized 2000 offering. An added bonus for those looking to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam is the fact that this edition lists which core and expert objectives are covered when covering a lesson. Also, the interactive practice files make it extremely easy to follow and learn - for anyone.

This book, in conjunction with the one by Barbara Clemens, helped me to not only garner Excel 2002 proficiency, but to become an Excel 2002 Expert. Now that I'm an Expert, I can tell you this book might be too easy for me - but maybe not for you. And that's the real deal.

It did the job.......2002-11-05

I found the lessons easy to follow... a bit too easy sometimes. That was to be expected in this type of book. I have a lot of experience with Excel and I only bought the book so that I could prepare for the Excel Expert exam. So, most of the information was known to me, but there were several sections of new information. It filled in my knowledge gaps and I passed the exam. The book did its job.
