Book Description
Whether they are working on films set in the reality of the contemporary era or a fantastic imaginary world, or one that requires historical accuracy, all costume designers approach their work with a profound attention to character and a desire to serve the story. This Academy publication celebrates the work of these consummate artists and includes costumes designed for recent films of all genres, with each costume communicating the essence of the character for whom it was designed.
The field of costume design comes to life in this beautiful soft-cover catalogue representing the work of fifty of the top costume designers working today. Each designer is represented by a full-color two-page spread featuring an insightful first-person commentary that explores the challenges that he or she faced on one recent film project, and how a particular costume resulted from this intensive design process. Each layout also contains the original sketch for that costume and a film still of the costume as it was ultimately worn by the actor on film. Designer portraits and filmographies complete this in-depth look into the craft. Represented film titles are as diverse as Spider-Man, Austin Powers, Legally Blonde 2, The Last Samurai, Almost Famous, Chocolat, Ocean's Eleven, 102 Dalmatians, Gangs of New York, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Frida.
This exhibition catalogue was organized at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and contains a foreword by Academy governor Jeffrey Kurland and an introduction by Deborah Nadoolman Landis. It also contains a complete index.

Designs from the last 10 years.......2007-06-27
This book shows designs from films that were made in the last ten years. Each designer talks about how they got the idea for the costume and working with the actor who wore it. Some of the costumes were very elaborate while others looked like clothes we would wear everday which are often overlooked as being a costume design. I would of liked to see old as well as new designers in the book though.
aimed at the layperson.......2005-07-23
I work in costume for theatre and film, and bought this book hoping for insights into the design process in terms of unpicking scripts to give insights to the character and story and communicating that info to the audience. I also expected something about the changes that occur between coming up with an initial design sketch and actually shooting - how you incorporate all the different demands of directors, actors, suppliers that let you down, location changes, etc. I also hoped to learn something about the creation of different costumes; materials, techniques etc.
Now that I have it I see this book doesn't intend to cover this at all, and is a book for a general film buff who has a small interest in costumes, rather than a professional costumer or even a cosplay fan. I was particularly disappointed in the written componant of the book - for example a designer talking about creating a colour 'mood board' to give the actors and directors a sence of the costumes. That doesn't help anyone who works in costume already - it's only news to general public. This isn't a criticism of any of the designers - they have all written clear accessible, interesting text - they are just writing to a different audience than I was anticipating.
So - the layout; each costume has a double page. On the right page is a picture of the original costume sketch, about twice the size of a thumbnail (so still really small) and a larger still or studio photo of the actor wearing the costume in the film. I was disappointed that many of the photos look as if they are supposed to be for a book on actors instead of the clothing - quite a few are waist up and focus on the face. Also on this page is a list of the garments in this particular costume and their fibre componant e.g. "Taupe poly/wool blend suit and green cotton shirt", the name of the actor, the name of the character, and the film for which they were designed.
On the left page is a head shot of the costume designer, their filmography, and a brief (200-300 word) piece about some aspect of the costume design. Sometimes it's about research, sometimes about working with a particular actor, why they chose this colour scheme, where they got the costumes made, a character analysis; each designer talks about something different.
If each designer had talked about ALL of these things it would have been a very informative book. As it is, I enjoyed reading it, I particularly enjoyed the design sketches (wish they were bigger), but still found it unsatisfying. There is a good mix of period and contemporary costumes. This book is the catalogue for an exhibition of these costumes and is arranged alphabetically by designer.
I would recommend it for any students of costume (the introduction by Deborah Nodoolman Landis is very informative for those starting out), but for an experienced designer it won't add much to your knowledge base.
I'd like to read some other reviews of this book - maybe I expected too much and that's why I'm disappointed. There's certainly good snippets of advice all the way through, I just wanted something meatier.
Book Description
"Delightful history of Gennett Records, its parent the Starr Piano Company of Richmond, Indiana, in the 1920s, and the birth of recorded jazz . . . For jazz followers, not to be missed. A huge success." --Kirkus Reviews
" . . . a labor of love if ever there was one. . . . [Gennett] helped get everything started, and we are in Rick Kennedy's debt for paying it due tribute." --Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post
" . . . lively and anecdotal history . . ." --JazzTimes
From 1917 to 1932, in a primitive studio next to the railroad tracks, the Gennett family of Richmond, Indiana recorded some of the earliest performances of jazz, blues, and country greats - including Jelly Roll Morton, Big Bill Broonzy, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, Bix Beiderbecke, and native Hoosier Hoagy Carmichael (whose "Stardust" debuted on Gennett as a dance stomp).
Jelly Roll, Bix, and Hoagy is the first detailed account of the people and events behind this unique company. Personalized by anecdotes from musicians, employees, and family members, it traces the colorful history of a pioneer recording company.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating account of an obscure topic!.......2006-11-21
I LOVED this book! I would not have expected that enough people would be interested in Gennett Records to warrant such a publication, but obviously (and delightfully) I'm wrong! Recommended reading for any record collector, but especially those of early jazz.
Fascinating!.......2005-04-06
Any collector of old 78s knows about the Gennett label. Gennett was the first independent label to have a serious impact on the recording industry, and in part helped to launch the careers of many early jazz legends. King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael, Earl Hines, and others made their first records in Gennett's hot, cramped studio by the side of railroad tracks in Richmond, Indiana. Today, those original 78s are highly-prized collectors items, fetching hundreds or thousands of dollars at auction.
In years of collecting 78s, I have come across dozens of Gennett records, but until I read this book, I knew little about them or the company that made them (outside of tidbits here and there from reissue liner notes or chats with other collectors). Rick Kennedy has written a book that is filled not only with entertaining anecdotes, but a wealth of information. Reading about Bix's sessions with the Wolverines is almost like being there, and listening to the records afterwards gives the recordings a whole new meaning. Kennedy introduces us to the people who made Gennett records happen--the musicians, the sound engineers, the businessmen, and the distributors. The book traces Gennett Records from its beginning in the Starr Piano Company, through its legal struggle to continue (ultimately defeating Victor's patent for the right to make lateral recordings), to its glory days in the 1920s, and its demise with the onset of the Great Depression. Along the way, the book answers questions about how the records were made, how they were distributed, and what happened to the recorded masters (which is an interesting story in itself!). Gennett's relationship with the infamous KKK records is explained (basically, they were "custom" records that Gennett made solely for the extra profit, turning a blind eye to the content).
Gennett recorded some of the most creative and lasting jazz, blues, and "old-time" music in the 1920s and the label's story is a fascinating one. Lovers of jazz, old records, or American history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in general will enjoy reading this book. It is well-written and very "readable" (I went through it in about three sessions). It also serves as a handy reference to answer questions that may arise among 78 or jazz collectors. Highly recommended!
Essential Reading on the Recording Industry.......1998-09-17
In this eminently readable book, Kennedy manages to provide the reader with an overview of the early history of the whole recording industry while also providing a view of successful Midwestern entrepreneurship---and that is just the background laid for this fascinating topic.
I had heard about those "incredible Gennett sides" for many years, and acquired several samples of Gennett records around 15 years ago. In many cases the unknown or obscurely known artists turned in amazing performances that anticipated where jazz and popular music would be several years in the future---in the later 30's and 1940's. I often wondered how these performances failed to come to the attention of the larger American listening audience. After reading this book, I feel that I have an understanding.
Learning the history of the company that pioneered recorded jazz was the enjoyable and enlightening result of reading this book. The incredible history of this American popular music form and its legitimacy as a recorded music encompasses the entire history of the Midwestern and Southern United States during the first quarter of the 20th century. Kennedy's book will soon have you absorbed in that history.
While the topic is certainly the genesis of Jazz music recording, the reader will soon discover there is much more to it. Highly recommended to anyone interested in American cultural history!

A standout book for kids' party planning........2003-03-04
As an elementary teacher and a parent, I've developed a collection of party planning books for kid's parties. This is the book I return to again and again for the best suggestions. There are so many creative ideas for decorations, menus, games and party favors. Some of my favorites include the Rainbow party (a big hit for toddlers!), the Firefighter party (including fun games involving squirting targets with a garden hose), and the Space party (where the favor bags are black bags poked with constellation holes and a flashlight!).
Customer Reviews:
Pretty useful book.......2001-08-22
This book contains good ideas for all ages. You can use ideas from one type of party and just change the theme. Also good ideas for school parties, etc.
Pick a pack of parties with the Pick-a-Party Book.......2000-12-17
The Kid's Pick-a-Party Book has loads of ideas for children's parties. The party age ranges are from toddler to teenager, and are identified in the table of contents for easy reference. We have used a number of ideas for different theme parties. The book focuses on a wide variety of party ideas, but doesn't address the typical party themes, like Valentine's Day, holidays, etc. It does have a ghosts and goblins party and we used some of those ideas for a Halloween party. It is well organized and has ideas for invitations, costumes, decorations, games, food, favors and more.
This is a wonderful book for ideas and themes!.......1999-11-11
If you have younger or older children, this is the book for you! If you have no ideas where to start or need great ideas. This book is wonderful! I needed some different and neat ideas and I found them in this book. I just can't say enough about this book.

lack of good ideas.......2004-07-13
When I bought this book I was thinking that it will has a good ideas for parties but, it does not have any. There are a lot of good party book out there. Some of the ideas are too embarrassing to do with your guest. If you ask me to buy this book again, my answer will be not.
A waste of money.......2001-05-16
There are far too many good party idea books on the market to consider, making this one a waste. There are very few original and creative ideas given in this book. I wish I hadn't spent the money on it.
A must-have for party planning!.......2000-02-28
Because my family loves to party, I'm always looking for ideas that are easy and fun. Patty Sachs delivers again! Whenever I am planning a celebration, I know that her books will help... and this one is the best yet! The book makes finding ideas so simple. It's like having my own personal party planner! (Only less expensive!)
Even a pro can learn a thing or two!.......2000-02-24
As an award-winning professional event planner who has been in the business for over 15 years, I figured there probably wasn't a whole lot I was going to learn by reading Patty's book, but just in case there was, I thought I'd buy it. I'm so glad I did! There were TONS of ideas that I know will work not only for my clients' parties, but also will be fun to do when I'm planning a party for my own friends.
Most are easy to duplicate and adapt to every situation...and Patty even provided a grid to help the "thematically challenged" find a theme to fit any occasion! :)
The ideas are bulleted and easy to read. And if you need a little more of an explanation or "how-to," Patty's provided that also for many of the projects.
If you are a newbie host, or are like me, and have thrown hundreds...thousands...of parties, BUY THIS BOOK! You'll use it again and again.
A pretty much useless book.......1999-11-28
This book is a waste of your money and time if you are looking for creative ideas for entertaining your party guests. Here is a statement for the New Year's Eve party: "New Year's Eve celebration often includes the whole family, with game playing, lively competitions, music, and food." (p.66). Yeah, right - this is extremely helpful to me to know when I am organizing such a party... Besides, this book does not have any concrete examples or suggestions on how to make parties fun. Instead of this book I would recommend one by Andrea Campbell "Great Games for Great Parties" - a lot more mileage for the same price.

The one theme cookbook you will use again and again!.......1999-02-19
I own a retail gift shop in North Carolina and have had great success selling the Pick-A-Party Cookbook. I sell copies of the book to customers who have returned to buy them for gifts. One lady bought a total of 4 books. She bought one for herself, went home and made up some of the recipes, then returned to buy 3 copies for her friends! These recipes can be used year-round! I feel great recommending this book to anyone. Even if they have a large cookbook collection. The decorating ideas in this book are first rate. I also recommend the book for people who throw large parties or maybe someone arranging a family reunion. Patty Sachs gives food and beverage guidelines for large groups! I've never come across that in other books. Simply put, buy the book!
This is a one-of-a-kind, must-have party theme cookbook!.......1999-02-19
I love this book. My favorite party so far was the bowling theme! It works great for kids or adults. The decorating ideas made our party a hit! Another great one is the Pet theme! We just got a new puppy and had to celebrate! These recipes are easy to make from ingredients you can find in any kitchen! Put this book in your collection to help make every party memorable! I highly recommend this book.
What a SURPRISE!.......1999-02-18
If I could make any comment at all, it would be to not be fooled by the title! Although it has recipes and food ideas, it is FAR MORE than that! I loved it! If you entertain a little... or a lot... this is a MUST!
Party-riffic!!!!.......1998-09-01
This gal really knows how to throw the best parties. Her ideas are fresh and fun. We have used this new book twice already with great results --- parties people are still talking about. Why try to think of a special way to celebrate when you've got 'this Party Lady' at your fingertips. Order the book! You'll use it.

Customer Reviews:
THE best I've read, and I've read many.......2004-10-26
I've bought many expensive courses and books on real estate investing, from the late-night TV guru to classic books on the subject. They all have some valuable information, BUT I WOULD TRADE HAVING BOUGHT THEM ALL IN FAVOR OF THIS ONE LITTLE BOOK UNDER $20. Whereas many real estate experts turned authors would have you believe that their courses give you tricks and secrets to wealth that you won't find anywhere else, Mr. Cummings explains in detail how all of these methods of finance are used all the time in real estate and are the foundations of amazing fortunes through property. Each technique is explained with examples, benefits, and potential pitfalls, each over the course of four to five pages. You can read this book in short snippets and walk away mentally charged with the possibilities or more likely get engrossed in the reading and not break for 100 pages. This isn't pie-in-the-sky, might work for somebody else stuff. This is how it's done all the time by the people that know how to maximize their return while minimizing their risk. I'm an avid reader and for books on financial success, I would place this book at number 2 on the must-read list, right behind Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad. That book tells you why you must turn to property. This book tells you how to do it. I can't recommend it highly enough! Great, great book! By the way, any reviewers thinking the use of OPM (other people's money) to buy property is only useful if you just crawled out of a cave or just landed on earth must have paid all cash for their houses, otherwise, they used OPM. Any kind of financing IS the use of OPM!
3 1/2 stars.......2004-04-12
One reviewer obivously stopped reading. Yes Jack Cummings has a chapter on cosigning and one on borrowing against a life insurance policy, but he also has 38 other chapters on very creative ways to finance real estate. But lets face it, these books are written for novices, so cut him some slack. He's covering all bases. And there are a one or two other just as cheesy ones such as chapter 37, "The Root Beer Float" (And in fact, this type of advice is why I didnt rate the book higher - but if you can gleen a couple of ideas to use then I feel a book is worth it).
Every type of financing one could think of is covered in this book from syndication to yes, using a family cosigner. Each idea also includes possible pitfalls. I rate this book 3 1/2 stars and feel it is a solid purchase.
Archaic and useless.......2004-01-13
Investing in RE with OPM is useful if you just came out from a cave or just landed on Earth. Can't make a deal work? Great suggestions from Cummings include asking your family member (THE FAMILY LOAN), borrowing against life insurance policies (MUST really really make sure that its whole and not term)(THE POLICY LOAN) and how about asking for a co-signer (THE AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR). Only Cummings can manage to write chapters and pages about how to get a loan from a family member or how to add a co-signer to a loan. Investors, please, you have more important things to do.
Investing in less then a week-Great book with Excellent INFO.......2003-11-29
I read this book in less then a week and I am already putting together a purchase proposal following this books examples. It has many great ideas and explainations of how to flip properties, using first and second mortgages to benefit you, using home equity, taking a mortgage from the seller when they have 100% equity. I have been a minor in real estate for a few years, but this book has opened my eyes to new ways and techniques that I wish I knew many years back.
Jack Cummings is a great author, easy to read and follow. Nice short chaperts.
