John Lewis is an authentic American hero, a modest man from the most humble of beginnings who left a rural Alabama cotton farm 40 years ago and strode into the forefront of the civil rights movement. One of the young people who brought the teachings of Ghandi and King to the lunch counters of Nashville in 1960, Lewis suffered taunts and threats, beatings and arrests. He spoke at the historic 1963 March on Washington and became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The nation, tuned to the nightly news, watched in horror as state troopers clubbed him viciously, fracturing his skull as he led a march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Today, he's the only member of Congress who can be proud of having been carried off to jail more than 40 times. With the help of a collaborator, journalist Michael D'Orso, this remarkable man has written a truly remarkable book. Walking with the Wind is a deeply moving personal memoir that skillfully balances the intimate and touching recollections of the deeply thoughtful Lewis with the intense national drama that was the civil rights movement.
Book Description
Forty years ago, a teenaged boy named John Lewis stepped off a cotton farm in Alabama and into the epicenter of the struggle for civil rights in America. The ideals of nonviolence which guided that critical time of American history established him as one of the movement's most charismatic and courageous leaders.
In Walking with the Wind, John Lewis recounts his life with the fierce simplicity for which he is known, both in public and private. It began in rural poverty but within the bosom of a loving and resilient family. It has ranged across almost every battlefield in the most dramatic struggles for racial justice -- from Selma to Montgomery to Birmingham and beyond.
Lewis's leadership of the Nashville Movement -- a student-led effort to desegregate the city of Nashville using sit-in techniques based on the teachings of Gandhi -- established him as one of the movement's defining figures and set the tone for the major civil rights campaigns of the 1960s, from the Freedom Rides of 1961, during which Lewis was repeatedly brutally beaten and imprisoned; to the 1963 March on Washington, where his fiery speech thrust him into the national spotlight; to his selection as the national chairman of SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), which he helped shape and guide; to the 1965 "Bloody Sunday" attack at Selma, where Lewis suffered a fractured skull during a tear gas attack by Alabama state troopers. Lewis, as a participant in the movement, was to be, and remains, utterly true to his boyhood hero, Martin Luther King Jr., as a believer in the philosophy and discipline of nonviolent social action.
In 1966, Lewis was ousted as SNCC chairman by Stokely Carmichael, who represented the emerging militant "Black Power" direction of the movement. Two years later, Lewis joined Robert Kennedy in his 1968 campaign for the presidency. He was with Kennedy moments before he was assassinated.
Lewis, committed to the principles of nonviolence, spent the next decade organizing and registering four million voters in the South. In 1986, he sought a United States congressional seat in a campaign against his old friend, comrade, and former SNCC colleague Julian Bond. Lewis won the seat in a great upset and serves in Congress to this day.
John Lewis tells his story of struggle in the civil rights movement, of comradeship in that community, of its battles and triumphs, and of his own persevering faith with great charm, candor, and humor.

A Walk with the Wind not a Work of Art.......2007-08-02
The junior standard-bearer for civil rights during the era of segregation recounts his rise through those times toward his own national recognition. It's an intimate and introspective offering. It's a unique perspective.
After his Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, crashes, he self-imposes exile as an "invisible man" in New York working as a grant officer for a private charity:
(p398) "New York was just too big for me. I didn't feel as if I could get my hands around it. In the South, communities seemed comprehensible, manageable, workable. You could see where things started and ended. You could get a grasp of the place and the people, as well as their problems. And you could respond to those problems with solutions that might work...."
He always has the South on his mind where there remains "a spirit instilled by the civil rights movement that is still felt and remembered today, a spirit that was not and is not felt in the same way in the North. That, I believe, is the huge difference between the legacy of the civil rights movement in the North and the South. All the great battlegrounds of the civil rights movement were in the South. That fact is cherished and remembered by the people there." (p 208).
There is confusion in "Feel Angry with Me". The chapter describes the fall of Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney. Their violent deaths in defense of the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law during Freedom Summer (1964) fixed the nation's eyes on racist brutality in Mississippi. The confusion is in character casting and mixing the ridiculous partying with his friend, actress, Shirley MacLaine and his virginity in the same chapter with the sublime. Here, especially, the book sacrifices continuity to rigid chronology.
In and out of church - and on both sides of the pulpit - his cast of characters is most colorful, including a prominent one (not MacLaine) today facing bizarre criminal charges. So many stories within the author's story could make for a better book than a strict chronology.
The author alludes to his motivation to influence the masses, (p 400) "I felt the spirit, the hand of the Lord, the power of the Bible -- all of those things -- but only when they flowed through the church and out into the streets. As long as God and His teachings were kept inside the wall of a sanctuary, as they were when I was young, the church meant next to nothing to me." Like a good, "whooping" preacher, he is, at times, poetic. It's some of his best stuff.
Congressman Lewis is no great hero, though he has a measure of both -- greatness of association to the movement he led until the times turned violent -- and heroism for holding to his sometimes politically incorrect beliefs, though not sufficiently incorrect for this reviewer. And his book is not great literature. It is his gift to us with an interest in non-violent social change.
Pesonal journey in Civil Rights Era.......2007-07-12
John Lewis's powerful and moving retelling of his journey through the
Civil Rights years, much of it in leadership positions, is a walk through
important American history. His clarity of purpose, values, honed by the
beatings and jailings of those years shine through it all. This personal
insight into events we read about in history makes it real, and makes us
admire the courage and persistence of people like John Lewis. In our present
times of struggle over issues of war, environment and economic fairness,
we need both a reminder of this historical struggle and a next generation
to press us to make changes, to make a difference. A must read for anyone
concerned about our present times.
Walking With The People.......2007-06-13
Ever since I came to the U.S. I learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his philosophy of non-violence, I always wanted to learn more about the civil rights movement because of the way African American citizens overcame their obstacles in a non-violent way.
Walking with the wind is a memoir of the author John Lewis, the book begins at his home town where he was raised and learned the meaning of discrimination at an early age. The book describes his whole life how he was discriminated and how became involved with the movement, and how he later on became chair man of the SNCC.
The book also has a part where it only describes the life of John Lewis after the movement, what he does and what happens to all of his close friends, this is at the end of the book, but also talks about how he tries to become something important in U.S. politics.
My favorite part of the whole book is when John Lewis is watching the presidential elections of 1976, when he sees that Jimmy Carter was elected he begins to cry because like he says, he finally sees the hands that picked cotton, picking a president, he cries because he sees that all his hard work pays off, by the government counting the black vote.
The knowledge that John Lewis wants to pass down to readers is the struggle of all African American people to gain freedom and rights, he wants the new generation of people of color to know how much the old generation had to go through to gain all the freedom kids posses these days.
This book is boring, there is almost no action, it is mostly talking about politics, so do not read this book if you are not hooked by memoirs. It takes time to get into the good stuff, like for example, there are parts where the author describes the way police responded in a violent way to a non-violent protest, there are many occasions like this through out the whole book.
First-hand account of the student civil rights movement.......2007-06-04
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Civil Rights Movement. Lewis' broad range of experiences gives the reader a glimpse into nearly every facet of the 1960's part of the movement. However, it is also useful for the specific study of the Nashville student movement and the study of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee).
It all comes together here.......2005-12-03
John Robert Lewis "You are the man" Best book on civil rights movement I have read. The story seems to come full circle.

A book to savor.......2005-01-01
Diane Wind Wardell brings us a glowing picture of Janet Mentgen, who developed and teaches Healing Touch (HT), and established the Healing Touch International organization. Many nurses and other caregivers are using HT, which includes a variety of interventions in addition to hand and distant healing.
At the same time, this book is a marvelously detailed journal of the development of Wardell as a healer and HT teacher.
This is the sort of book one likes to dip into, ponder its lessons, and return to savor again and to chew on. The lack of index and references will hinder such deeper study.
Substance and process.......2004-04-19
This is an experiential tale of being the "sorcerer's apprentice" written in a stream of consciousness style which envelops the reader in a sense of the experience of the healing touch training.
A Fine Piece of Art on Healing.......2001-03-08
Combining her poetic and clinical writing style, Diane Wardell has captured the essence of multi-dimensional healing found within the Healing Touch certification program. Wardell is both courageous and strong as she teaches and inspires while telling the story of Healing Touch and its founder, Janet Mentgen. Wardell's sensitivity and at times personal journey vulnerabilities guide the reader through the essence of healing in its purest and truest form of a compassionate mother teaching her child about life and its challenges. I applaud the author for the courage to open herself up to the world and especially her world, the medical community. White Shadow is the first book I would recommend for anyone who is called to hands-on healing arts. It contains a wealth of knowledge and wisdom for Healing Touch practitioners as well, in training and certified. On a final note, I find White Shadow provides a spiritual framework of unity to those of us within the Healing Touch community but also touches all of us as healers around the world in a way which far exceeds our peer relationships and professional training.
Healing Touch.......2001-02-21
Diane Wardell has written a very moving account of her mentor and her own life changing experiences. In White Shadow Ms. Wardell has given us a wonderful insight into the art of healing touch and the lives of those who are dedicated to its practice. While the book is directed towards health professionals and those who strive to acquire the ancient skill it is also enlightening to anyone who wishes to learn more about healing touch. White Shadow is a very personal account of the people involved in bringing this art into modern times and western medicine. I was very taken up by this story, educated, and touched. Wardell has given us an opportunity to see how an individual can awaken the healing abilities that lie within us all. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in personal and world wide healing.

Walking with the Wild Wind.......2003-12-22
Walking with the Wild Wind is a long overdue book by Walkin' Jim Stoltz. When I read it, I felt as though I were walking along with him on his journey through the Wilderness of Montana and Idaho.
He shares his thoughts on wilderness philosophy, on finding his way through the land and well as through his own inner landscape. I could feel his pain and pleasure as he trod through familiar trails and newer ones.
I highly reccomend this book for outdoor lovers and folks who haven't yet had a chance to enjoy wilderness and its unforgetable experience.
Take a walk with Walkin' Jim! Review by John B. Free
For nature buffs and armchair travelers.......2003-09-21
Walking With The Wild Wind is the personal travelogue of Jim Stoltz and his solo trek through the wilderness of Montana's roadless areas. A detailed and captivating journey, deftly written with appreciation for the wonders of nature and articulating a regret of man's voracious expansion into pristine land, as well as narrating harrowing close calls with brush fires, falls, wildlife encounters, and river crossings, Walking With The Wild Wind brings the reader along upon an unforgettable journey. Highly recommended reading for nature buffs and armchair travelers, Walking With The Wild Wind would make a welcome and popular addition to community library collections.
Walkin' Jim takes us all on a needed journey.......2003-09-19
The first time I saw Jim Stoltz was at a concert he did for the Audubon Center in Amherst, Ma. I have seen his amazing show many times since. He shows slides of his journeys (operating the projector with his foot) as they illustrate his marvelous songs which he sings in his deep, baritone voice. I run a concert series myself and have had him perform a couple of times when he has made his east coast tour. When he sent me a mailing about his book I bought it immediately. A long-distance hiker & long-distance cycler myself, and a librarian, I have read a lot
of accounts of adventures. Often they are mere catalogs of the journey, and the writing is not very good.
This book is poetic, and also, you get to know Jim. Often in reading chronicles of adventures I come away feeling I never knew the person at all. I don't need to have the narrator spill their guts but one isn't hiking in a vacuum. Jim's flashbacks to other hikes, and parts of his life connect the story to life.
He is also an ardent defender of Wilderness, and if you aren't one before reading the book, you will be afterwards.
Look him up on his web-site, see him in a concert when he travels near you, buy his book and CDs. He is great.

The Cinema of Abbas Kiarostami
ASIN: 0674008448 |
Book Description
This bilingual edition of recent verse by the celebrated Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (award-winning director of such films as Close-Up and Taste of Cherry) includes English translations of more than two hundred crystalline, haiku-like poems, together with their Persian originals. The translators, noted Persian literature scholars Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak and Michael Beard, contribute an illuminating introduction to Kiarostami's poetic enterprise, examining its relationship to his unique cinematic corpus and to the traditions of classic and contemporary Persian poetry. Of interest to enthusiasts of cinema and literature alike, Walking with the Wind--the second volume in Harvard Film Archive's series "Voices and Visions in Film"--sheds light on a contemporary master who transforms simple fragments of reality into evocative narrative landscapes.

Not haiku ... acute visual perception translated into verse.......2002-04-19
The translators of this work provide a very astute introduction to the poetry placing it in perspective with regards to Kiarostami's cinematography, the Persian poetic tradition and 20th century innovation. Through this they guide the reader to listen for the space between objects compared, to observe the "grand scheme" implied in the particular, to note how the "obvious" is unobserved and surprising.
An example from the introduction of this last point: "... a sycamore leaf / falls softly / and rests / on its own shadow"
The poems are like haiku in that they are minimalist and nature based. However, the sensibility of the cosmic purpose present in these poems differs from the sensibility of cosmic nowness of the (Zen) haiku tradition.
An example: "... the clock /reads seven minutes to seven" reads in these poems as "seven" intentionally invoking cultural connotations. In haiku, it would more likely read as factual observation ... enlightened observation, perhaps, but observation.
The book is beautifully printed, Persian and English side by side, one poem per page. The poems must be read slowly, allowing the visual image time to form in your mind... but what perfect visual images ... images to savour and explore. My one regret ... I cannot read the Persian in this bilingual edition.

Book Description
Melvin F. Petersen traveled 30,000 miles a year visiting schools, families, and government offices while working as principal and teacher in the school system of the Navajo reservations in New Mexico and Arizona. The geography of the West has a lot to do with that mileage, and, as he reveals in Watching the Winds of Change While Walking with the Navajo People, it also affects most other aspects of life on the reservation.
Incisive assessments and lighthearted anecdotes combine to recount his forty years of travel and tutelage. He offers a true education in the nature of life on the reservation, leaving no stone unturned while examining issues of health, communication, housing, language barriers, economics, transportation, traditions, and culture. Through this firsthand knowledge, he shows that change is a way of life, and, despite the Western landscape's isolation and wide open spaces, change is coming to the reservation.

Great value.......2007-04-26
Took the advice of another reviewer and am glad I did! The puzzles aren't so hard that you feel defeated, but just difficult enough to get your brain really working. None of those 3,4,or 5 letter easy answers! All Sunday-sized with themes! Only one small drawback related to the book's layout: all the puzzles are positioned in the lower right corner of each page; makes writing in answers a little awkward. That aside, I'm having a blast with this book!
Monster.......2006-08-19
Excellent crossword book. Puzzles are not extremely hard but just difficult to test your brain.
Gosh, A must buy for crossword fans........2000-11-29
I rarely solved sunday crosswords--- it took too much time. But puzzles in this gorgeous book are so good that I can not help but looking up my dictionary and encyclopedia over and over, trying hard but happily to fill each box. This book contains not only tremendous number of puzzles(500 in all!) but also in very high quality. Let me introduce first pages: the puzzle no.1 is by Mike Shenk, no.2 by Merl Reagle, no.3 by Trip Payne, no.4 by Stanley Newman, the incredible editor of this book, himself, no.5 is by David A. Rosen.... These names are so thunderous and famous in this field. I adore Stanley Newman for editing such a high-level collection of puzzles, offering endless joy for crossword fans.
Contemporary Masterpiece.......1999-08-25
It's a great collection of puzzles not only in sheer quantity but quality as well at an almost unheard of price (less than 4 cents/puzzle!). These puzzles are a great example of the new breed of constructors who rely more on clever wordplay than arcane knowledge. The difficult, on average, is a little less challenging than the normal Sunday NY Times. Stanley Newman shows again why he is one of the most respected crossword puzzle editors and a very fine constructor in his own right.

Great puzzles for Sundays when not in New York.......2000-10-15
Vacationing in a cabin with no dictionary, I found this book both challenging but doable. When stuck on one puzzle, I found myself going to the next one but returning to previous puzzles and eventually solving them. My only problem was to hide the book from my husband and his mother, both who kept trying to do my puzzles.

Peri H. Pakroo, J.D.'s STARTING & BUILDING A NONPROFIT: A PRACTICAL GUIDE appears in its second updated edition to provide business collections concerned with nonprofit status with a specific survey of how to create an overall effective nonprofit organization. From hiring and training staff and handling fundraising campaigns to obtaining insurance and marketing your organization, it's a winner.
get the Mancuso "How To Form A Nonprofit Corporation" instead.......2007-02-28
Very simple, and not very useful. I bought this first, thinking it was the cheaper Nolo Nonprofit book. In the first few chapters there are at least 6 or 7 little comments "*NOTE: SEE MANCUSO* for more information". So many notices that it reads like an ad for the Mancuso book. On that point, I agree, Mancuso is much more detailed and helpful.
The 'forms' provided on the CD rom are only computer versions of the checklists that are printed at the end of each chapter. Total waste of plastic.
Very GOOD, BUT.......2006-07-09
This is a very good book, lots of charts and check lists and a CD, but it wasn't written by an attorney so even though it as written by a person with a degree in law, there is no practical layering experience behind it, so this is why I give this one 4 stars and not 5.
An Excellent Book..........2006-06-02
I was interested in learning everything that I needed to know about setting up a nonprofit organization, step-by-step. I wanted to know the right questions to ask an attorney and do as much of the groundwork as possible to help save costs.
Attorney Peri Pakroo has done a superb job. This book was EXCELLENTLY written, easy to understand, thorough, and presented in a concise format. I found the price to be quite reasonable considering that it ALSO contained a CD that had various checklists.
So much of forming a nonprofit organization is just following directions (but you NEED to FOLLOW the directions perfectly) and doing steps A-Z. (There are a LOT of steps!) "Starting and Building a Nonprofit...." made following these directions clear and straightforward to get you through each step.
At the same time, because they were featured together - I also ordered "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Your Nonprofit Organization" by Ms. Cellaneous based on a lot of excellent reviews. In my opinion, it didn't begin to cover the process of all the steps needed to form an organization.
Thankfully, I ordered THIS book as well...because frankly, it was the only book I found I needed.
