    Book Description

Often regarded as cinematic in their scope and power, the novels of Thomas Hardy have inspired some of the most absorbing adaptations of fiction for the big screen. This collection of essays by prominent international Hardy scholars explores both successful and unsuccessful attempts to transfer Hardy's novels to the screen. It provides a fascinating illustrated history of the interpretation and recreation of Hardy's work, from the silent era to television. The essays highlight the challenging nature of Hardy's work, which finds its most powerful reflection in films by controversial directors such as Roman Polanski and Michael Winterbottom.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, you can compute using tinkertoys!.......2000-06-30

The master machinator is at it again, explaining computer science in ways that are offbeat, understandable and exciting. Yes, it is true that a functional computer was built by students at M. I. T. using Tinkertoys, and it played a mean game of tic-tac-toe. While fun to think about and look at, this idea contains much that is deeply significant. As those exposed to Turing Machines know, located in chapter six of this book and found in Dewdney's other works, computer computations are built using very simple base models. There is no theoretical distinction between the actions of a Tinkertoy computer and the fastest supercomputer. The ultimate capabilities of computers, if such things really exist, are not a function of the complexity of the base operations.
Which leads to the discussion of a heated debate taking place in and around the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. Arguers against the notion of true machine intelligence use the underlying simplicity of computer computations to refute the idea that machines can ever develop self-awareness. Which is now becoming the irrefutable proof of true AI, supplanting the Turing test. Dewdney handles this philosophical discussion very well, posing his own questions. Such as, will we ever truly know what thinking really is?
Chaotic music, neural networks, programming Star Trek and golf games; computers that "passed" the Turing test and computer sculptures are just some of the additional material covered. The number of ways Dewdney finds to further explain computer science is nothing short of amazing.
Another in a growing list of superb primers in computer science by this author, one can only hope that they keep coming. Each essay is a jewel to be treasured and pondered.

4 out of 5 stars The textbook on HR coaching.......2006-05-09

Frederic M. Hudson wrote this exhaustive reference manual and survey of the field of coaching primarily for coaches and aspiring coaches. He focuses on teaching the best practices in coaching and conveying knowledge, extensive resources, thorough book lists and professional programs. The real message underneath all this data is that a good coach is the ultimate human resource. If you're a coach, you'll benefit from the book's thoroughness. If you're unfamiliar with the field, it's a textbook for understanding many facets of professional coaching and its impact on people and organizations. We recommend Hudson's book particularly to coaches, and also to those who want to learn more about coaching, human resource managers, business libraries, and executives who are recruiting coaches or team leaders. Just forget the idea that all you need to know you learned in kindergarten; to thrive, you need to keep learning continuously. Just ask a coach.

5 out of 5 stars Hudson is the real deal........2003-11-08

The author has been working with adult developement and coaching since earning his PhD in the 60's. Hudson shows us how the field of coaching relies on the work from a variety of disciplines. He provides many sources from these disciplines to help aid coaches when working with specific groups or specific problems. For anyone building a strong foundation in coaching, this is a great reference book to have handy on your shelf. It's especially useful for newly-trained coaches who might need a deeper understanding of their profession or a good way to avoid reinventing the wheel.

5 out of 5 stars A Handbook and Silent Coaching Partner.......2001-11-09

As a Life Skills Coach, based in Melbourne Australia, I am always on the search for coaching texts that will enhance my professional skills and coaching knowledge. 'The Handbook of Coaching' is with out a doubt I believe one of the most valuable coaching resource materials I have discovered. Hudson has covered a great deal of material, yet the insights into the various areas of coaching, methodologies and foundations of coaching, are supported by an excellent bibliography section, relevant to the end of each chapter.

The author's writing style is clear and only uses jargon relative to the context, ensuring a novice to the coaching practice feels immediately able to grasp key concepts. This is the value that managers, HR personnel and coaches alike will gain from the book...ease of understanding and practical.

It is a how to book and refernce guide that sets out to (and I daresay achieves)to establish a relationship with its reader; as a handbook of this nature should.

The life transition model that Hudson introduces, acknowledges the validity of adult hood problems, as being more than mere extensions of our child hood challenges. It acknowledges also the process of transition versus the static nature of a changing event.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

            1 out of 5 stars A total disappointment.......2000-08-16

I have read several books about coaching and generally enjoy them alot. This book however was a big disappointment. Really it only contains list after list of suggested reading. That is all it is. I would really estimate that no less than 75% of the book is made up of "Basic library suggestions". Terrible.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece for the Coaching Professional.......2000-02-09

Dr. Hudson, like a master surgeon, cuts into the complex art of professional coaching with the effect of making each critical step more meaningful and understandable.

Detailed introductions into the vast domain of related disciplines are complemented with extensive topical bibliographies. Where no sinlge volume could cover the entire breadth of professional coaching, Dr. Hudson provides a jump start for your arduous learning journey.

Coaching, as an emerging helping profession, needs structure and discipline. Dr. Hudson is well on his way to helping define such structure and discipline.

A prudent read for every genuinely aspiring coach.

5 out of 5 stars Tool Kit for Facilitators and EQ Coaches.......2007-05-29

This book is organized by the fifteen EQ skill areas. Each has a set of exercises that can be used with individuals, groups, and teams that are seeking to more fully understand each of the skill areas and how they apply to relationships and to work environments. Excellent resource tool for trainers, facilitators, and EQ coaches - from beginner to advanced facilitator skill level. Easy to use, interpret, and integrate with other forms of EQ coaching.

4 out of 5 stars EQ Starter Book for Coaches.......2007-02-12

I found this book to be very useful in the understanding EQ, its competencies and excercises for each competencies to improve EQ level. As a coach specializing in Leadership and EQ it is a good source for me to help bring focus to my client's needs.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-01-24

This book is a waste of time. It does not contain exercises to help you apply the principals to your specific issues with customer or employees. It was very general and did not teach me anything that I did not already know. The book was way too expesive, as well.

            5 out of 5 stars Best user-friendly manual yet.......2006-11-02

I've provided training in corporations on a number of topics for years. As I was seeking the "right" resource for teaching emotional intelligence, I've encountered many books on the topic but none that was really helpful for easy training purposes. Emotional Intelligence In Action is absolutely one of the very best manuals for training I've encountered for any topic.

It is extremely user friendly in it's organization, complete with information about level of expertise the trainer should have, how long the unit would take to present, and a plethora of very useful activities. This book practically writes your training for you.

In addition to this book, I'd like to recommend Marcia Hughes' and James Terrell's company, Collaborative Growth LLC, for it's training and certification for professionals. They provide excellent training on emotional intelligence as well as certification for tests such as the Bar-On EQI in it's various forms. They are warm, friendly individuals and their trainings are highly personal. Check them out as well as their wonderful resource book.

This short pamphlet dwells more on disciplinary aspects of supervisor-employee sessions than on true coaching. It tries too hard to solve every problem in a one-shot encounter with an employee.
The book pretends to be about improvement through coaching, yet the encounters described in each example have too much of the usual "you-did-wrong-now-fix-it" Theory X style of management that true coaching avoids.
However, the examples are a definite improvement over the usual tactics described as the usual approach to employee performance problems. A better read, for only a few bucks more, would be COACHING FOR IMPROVED WORK PERFORMANCE, by Ferdinand F. Fournies. While Cottrell & Layton's book will get you to first base, you really need a long-term solution that will create self-sufficient, self-correcting workers.
