In The Last Picture Show Larry McMurtry introduced characters who would show up again in later novels, Texasville and Duane's Depressed. This first volume of the trilogy drops the reader into the one-stoplight town of Thalia, Texas, where Duane Moore, his buddy Sonny, and his girlfriend Jacy are all stumbling along the rocky road to adulthood. Duane wants nothing more than to marry Jacy; Sonny wants what Duane has; and Jacy wants to get the hell out of Thalia any way she can. This is not a novel of big ideas or defining moments; over the course of a year Duane and Jacy make up and break up, Sonny begins an affair with his high-school football coach's wife, and the only movie house in town closes its doors forever. Yet it is out of these small-town experiences--a nude swimming party in Wichita, a failed sexual encounter during a senior trip, a botched elopement, an enlistment--that McMurtry builds his tale and reveals his characters' hearts. No epiphanies here, just a lot of hard-won experience that leaves none of his protagonists particularly wiser, though they're all a little sadder by the end. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

The Last Picture Show is one of Larry McMurtry's most powerful, memorable novels -- the basis for the enormously popular movie of the same name. Set in a small, dusty, Texas town, The Last Picture Show introduced the characters of Jacy, Duane, and Sonny: teenagers stumbling toward adulthood, discovering the beguiling mysteries of sex and the even more baffling mysteries of love. Populated by a wonderful cast of eccentrics and animated by McMurtry's wry and raucous humor, The Last Picture Show is wild, heartbreaking, and poignant -- a coming-of-age novel that resonates with the magical passion of youth.

5 out of 5 stars A tale for the ages.......2007-08-05

Larry McMurtry turns out far too much material and that has hurt his legacy. But this book stands out at the top of his list, along with one or two others, all also important movies or, of course, TV mini-series. This book speaks to me particularly because I grew up in a similar town in Eastern Oregon, of all places. Anyone of a certain age who grew up in the West has to love this story, even beyond enjoying the great writing of an author who was then a young man.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMING OF AGE NOVEL.......2007-01-25

This is a great coming of age novel about Sonny, Duane, and Jacy growing up in the 1950's. Some parts are sad but it is a very moving and well written novel. I really enjoyed the story. I really liked this book a lot.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining at times, Unbelievable at others.......2006-03-27

I liked the pace, flow ,and language of this novel. My problems stemmed from character behavior, having grown up in Texas I could not relate to these boys. I can not imagine any scenario where a groupsof teenage boys would get together to go have sex witha calf. I'm not naive to think this has never happened, it muight even happen on a regular basis, but not as a group activity with half the high school there to watch. Like ise there is no great homophobic group than teenage boys and for the author to say they made a habit of grabbing for each other's privates came across as unbelievable. Once I can't beleive a books characters, I no longer care about the story.

5 out of 5 stars Larry McMurtry's finest.......2005-11-24

this is an excellent book that produced an exceptional movie (though as usual, the book is better)
The book is the story of sonny and duane, two high school "rough necks" coming of age in thalia, a small town in texas in the early 1950's.

What is great about the novel is that it captures not only the restlessness of growing up in a small town , but the feeling of staying and living in a small town (there are just as many adult characters as there are teenage ones)
What i like about it is that it is not only a coming of age novel, but a novel of what happens when you come of age (living with your choices- and mistakes)
Another asset is the excellent female characters, which has always been Larry McMurtry's strong suit.
The best novels capture the look and spirit of a specific place so you feel like you've actually been there. After reading this, you'll feel like you spent time with real people in a town called thalia and you'll care about them.

Note- if you read this - read the two sequels "texasville"(not as good)and "duane's depressed"(just as good). The author ages the characters in ways you do not expect after reading this novel (sort of like real life).

5 out of 5 stars Coming of age in a small Texas town.......2005-11-21

Larry McMurtry's third novel, set in Thalia, Texas, an oil town that's seen better times. The plot centers around two high school boys, Sonny and Duane, as they struggle toward maturity and self identity. Both boys are basically parentless and spend most of their time under the care of Sam the Lion, who owns the pool hall, cafe, and movie house, and Genevieve, a waitress at the cafe. Late in the book, when Sam learns that Sonny has gotten mixed up with the degredation of the half-wit Billy, he bars him from his establishments, which isolates Sonny and drives him toward an affair with the much older Ruth Popper.

Both Duane and Sonny are hooked on the same girl, Jacy Farrow, the spoiled rich daughter of an oil man. She uses both of them, even talking Sonny into running off with her to get married (the whole thing comes to nothing). Duane eventually leaves town by joining the army, but Sonny is stuck there; he attempts to escape in his car after Duane leaves, but turns around at the edge of town.

The tone of the book is sad, with Sonny seemingly defeated by circumstances by age 18. Although some of the characterization is stereotypical, McMurtry portrays Duane and Sonny accurately and honestly. He also captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of a dying small town on the wind-blown plains of Texas perfectly. Peter Bogdanovich would make an excellent movie from the book, which would make two great movies (HUD was the first) based on two of his first three novels - not bad for the young author.

      Book Description

"Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Bringing together a newly commissioned body of scholarship with reprints of important historical texts, The Last Picture Show seeks to define the legacy that has produced a rich body of photographic practice in the art world today."

        Book Description

The French Connection, The Last Picture Show, M.A.S.H., Harold and Maude--these are only a few of the iconic films made in the United States during the 1970s. Originally considered a "lost generation," the 1970s are increasingly recognized as a crucial turning point in American filmmaking, and many films from the era have resurfaced from oblivion to become a reference for new directorial talents. The Last Great American Picture Show explores this pivotal era in American film history with a collection of essays by scholars and writers that firmly situates the decade as the time of the emergence of "New Hollywood."

Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, Peter Bogdanovich, Monte Hellman, Bob Rafelson, Hal Ashby, Robert Altman, and James Tobac: these legendary directors developed innovative techniques, gritty aesthetics, and a modern sensibility in American film. Here, contributors compellingly argue that the cinema of today's major directors--Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Robert Zemeckis--could not have come into existence without the groundbreaking works produced by the directors of the 1970s. A wholly engaging and long-overdue investigation of this important era in American film, The Last Great American Picture Show reveals how the films of the 1970s transformed the American social consciousness and influenced filmmaking worldwide.

          5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove.......2002-12-04

Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I have ever read. It has drama, action, love and everything that makes a good book good. The story begins with the author describing the characters and the story, and you really can connect with the characters. The main character is Gus McCrae, an ex Texas Ranger who is very lazy, and loves to drink. Despite this, he is an excellent ranger and his name is known all throughout America. The other main character is Call. He is a hard working, stubborn man who doesn't like ot talk alot. The story goes on from there. I recomend this book for advanced readers, who want a spellbinding story.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, exciting & entertaining account of early Texas.......1998-07-15

I have read "Dead Man's Walk", "Comanche Moon","Lonesome Dove" and am now starting "Streets of Larado". My only disappointment is that the books don't contain a map depicting the locations of the major events. I wish the author could post one, so I can track the events and better relate to the actual locations. I loved the books- I grew up in West Texas and can identify with much of the landscape descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars Loved reading three of McMurtry's novels at one whack-.......1998-01-31

Larry McMurtry has an easy-going, though smart, style, that I identify with deeply. He doesn't try to pummel you with big words and confusing sentences. He writes like it feels.

          5 out of 5 stars THREE WINNERS.......1997-02-25

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW was set in a town about a hundred miles from where I live. Like all Texas towns, after the Korean War, television killed the down town area along with the picture shows. Larry was able to capture the smell of hot pop corn and hot bodies pressed against one another. Back before that war, young men had little more on their minds than how they could earn enough money after football pratice so they could take the beauty queen out - and sometimes, the football coach's wife. When the retard was killed by a fast truck, an era ended. If you are in Archer City, visit Larry's rare book store. You can pick up bargains for $5 to $1,000

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful and useful captions on 80 documents on music over the centuries.......2005-12-07

The great musicologist and authority on the music of the Renaissance, put together this little book (he called it a pamphlet) almost fifty years ago. In those days most of the important treatises on music of the fifteen hundred years had not yet been translated into English. Of course, in the old days of higher education such translations were not necessary because it was expected that the scholar would learn the necessary Latin, French, German, Spanish, Italian, or whatever was required. The became less the case as the twentieth century passed by. Nowadays, many college students even need remedial courses in English, but that is another topic.

In any case, since this was published in 1957, many of the documents have been translated into English. Not all remain in print, others can be found on the web in various states, but others are readily available. This book remains extremely valuable, however, for an unintended purpose. It was written to show young scholars what work needed to be done. Now, the wonderful captions provide concise summaries of the 80 documents and the importance of each in music history. This helps the reader learn more of the breadth of music history, helps the interested know what to search for, and helps the reader make connections to many ideas in music over the centuries (since the book covers documents written from ancient times through the early twentieth century).

Not for everyone, but quite valuable for the interested student, reader, and scholar.

                          Book Description

Unlike many other books in the field that simply compare managers working at home in their various cultures, International Dimensions of Organizational Behavior describes the approaches of successful managers in interacting with people from a wide range of cultures, including from Asia, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and people from both North and South America.

Nancy Adler presents a good overview on the topics in international HR Management. It is great as a textbook for class and a perfect starting point for novices who want to get into inter. HRM. The book is not overwhelmingly deep, but it is concise and has an efficient way of conveying the main concepts of culture and communication, synergy, teams, leadership, negotiations. Adler writes well making it easy to understand what she means and a fast read. She uses small cases to illustrate each problem she addresses, which are sometimes a little bit too simplistic for non-students. For me, a great advantage of the book is the comprehensive lists of references per chapter. This makes it easy to go further in topics I am especially interested in. The critique a have with almost all "international version" textbooks is, that it explicitly addresses Americans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook About International Management.......2003-01-26

I have had the pleasure of using Adler's book for several years now. Simply put, it is far more enjoyable to read than the average textbook and is packed with useful information for those wanting to learn.

Adler does a superb job of addressing the various dimensions of culture. She explains culture quite clearly and makes many connections to management practice. But maybe what I like best is that Adler goes beyond explaining. Each chapter contains vignettes discussing different cultural experiences. The short descriptions are interesting and lively. I have also noticed that the quantity and quality of vignettes has improved in the fourth edition.

Overall, the scope of this book seems quite thorough. National culture, workplace behavior across cultures, communication differences across cultures, creating synergy, multicultural teamwork and negotiation, global leadership, and the expat experience are all discussed. My favorite chapters tend to be early in the book (culture, teamwork, and synergy). It appears that these areas represent the author's greatest strength. The research informing each chapter is thorough and quite up-to-date. Maybe the weakest chapter, in my view, is chapter three which deals with communication. I suspect that maybe the author steps a bit beyond her expertise and is not able to touch on the deeper issues of cross-cultural communication (as she touches on the deeper issues in teamwork or other chapters). The result is a good chapter and sound discussion that maybe lacks the richness found in other parts of the book. She sets the standard so high in other chapters and I was hoping for the same here.

I have used this text for several years in intercultural management courses for undergraduate business students. The students seem to enjoy the book and encourage me to keep using it. I guess that is the highest praise we can give any text--students like it.

As a cross-cultural trainer based in the United States, I needed to find a pragmatic book that both students and sophisticated business people would find helpful. At the same time, it had to provide a lot of solid information in an easy-to-read format. Dr. Adler's book is it at ERUdyne! Actually, we have had to replace our copies many times as they keep disappearing after positive reviews from our clients!

My copy is dog-eared. I recommend it to anyone who needs to understand how culture impacts global business organizations today. It contains excellent questions for reflection, charts, summaries and references.

Dr. Adler's book makes a positive difference in one's perception and understanding of the real challenges facing global businesses. It also provides good case studies with a step-by-step guide for addressing global organizational behavior issues. I couldn't ask for more in one text.

                          Book Description

International Management is the most comprehensive introduction to cross-cultural management currently available. It demonstrates how cultural factors influence behavior in the boardroom and the workplace, and examines the skills needed to manage across national borders. For the third edition, the text has been extensively revised and updated to include new material on globalization and localization, strategic management, and the knowledge company. In addition, it has been restructured to look initially at how culture affects the structures and systems of a company, and then at how these internal arrangements influence international and strategic management. An appendix on dissertation and project writing has been added to make the text even more student-friendly.As in previous editions, the numerous examples included in the book are drawn from a wide variety of sources and are truly international, being sourced from the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Its clear linking of management theories and practical examples will continue to make this text popular with both students and instructors.

This book is over-priced and offers little academic or practical value for lecturing Business Students. No instructor's manual available. It seems if the author took several resources and crammed it all together in one publication. I am quite disappointed with this purchase and for using this in class.

I purchased the book for a class I'm taking. It has some errors in it (it refers to President Bush as a former Senator when he was running for President). It's very straight forward and mildly bland. Several students in my class have commented that it reads like an "Army manual." Mead and the publisher are British, which is probably the reason for this.

2 out of 5 stars In this modern world, don't expect much.......2005-12-15

I actually have taken 2 courses with the author and can tell you that his lectures are exactly like his book: outdated, general, non-applicable, and not worth the money. Here is a summary of the book in one sentence: Cultures are different, and a manager must be sensitive to those differences. -->Duh.

The real problem lies in the fact that the author has no real world business experience. Who would you rather have write a book on international management? a real-world, experienced manager, or an academic stuffed in an office reading about management from books and articles, and then compiling it all into his own book?

Anyways, don't bother with this book.

                            Book Description

Competitiveness is one of the key themes in the current debate about national economic performance. A vast array of statistical data is usually assembled by national governments to demonstrate a closing or widening of productivity or trade 'gaps' with other countries or groups of countries. The authors of this book argue that far too little attention has been paid to the often subtle, but highly significant, organizational and cultural characteristics which underpin production and trade in a globalized economy.

Dimensions of Competitiveness suggests that awareness of the impacts of this neglected dimension of competitiveness can, together with appropriate corrective action, significantly improve corporate and national performance.

While considering a variety of more conventional dimensions of international competitiveness, the authors challenge many established tenets. A number of policy prescriptions are outlined as a result. Attention is also paid to some of the key distributive and infrastructural roles in enhancing international competitiveness including facilitating labor and capital mobility and providing efficient transport systems.
